About the author

Graham Masterton was born in Edinburgh in 1946. His grandfather was Thomas Thorne Baker, the eminent scientist who invented DayGlo and was the first man to transmit news photographs by wireless. After training as a newspaper reporter, Graham went on to edit the new British men's magazine Mayfair, where he encouraged William Burroughs to develop a series of scientific and philosophical articles which eventually became Burroughs' novel The Wild Boys.

At the age of 24, Graham was appointed executive editor of both Penthouse and Penthouse Forum magazines. At this time he started to write a bestselling series of sex 'how-to' books including How To Drive Your Man Wild In Bed which has sold over 3 million copies worldwide. His latest, Wild Sex For New Lovers is published by Penguin Putnam in January, 2001. He is a regular contributor to Cosmopolitan, Men's Health, Woman, Woman's Own and other mass-market self-improvement magazines.

Graham Masterton's debut as a horror author began with The Manitou in 1976, a chilling tale of a Native American medicine man reborn in the present day to exact his revenge on the white man. It became an instant bestseller and was filmed with Tony Curtis, Susan Strasberg, Burgess Meredith, Michael Ansara, Stella Stevens and Ann Sothern.

Altogether Graham has written more than a hundred novels ranging from thrillers (The Sweetman Curve, Ikon) to disaster novels (Plague, Famine) to historical sagas (Rich and Maiden Voyage - both appeared in the New York Times bestseller list). He has published four collections of short stories, Fortnight of Fear, Flights of Fear, Faces of Fear and Feelings of Fear.

He has also written horror novels for children (House of Bones, Hair-Raiser) and has just finished the fifth volume in a very popular series for young adults, Rook, based on the adventures of an idiosyncratic remedial English teacher in a Los Angeles community college who has the facility to see ghosts.

Since then Graham has published more than 35 horror novels, including Charnel House, which was awarded a Special Edgar by Mystery Writers of America; Mirror, which was awarded a Silver Medal by West Coast Review of Books; and Family Portrait, an update of Oscar Wilde's tale, The Picture of Dorian Gray, which was the only non-French winner of the prestigious Prix Julia Verlanger in France.

He and his wife Wiescka live in a Gothic Victorian mansion high above the River Lee in Cork, Ireland.

Ένα βιβλίο που το μέγεθός αλλά και η γραφή του δεν δικαιολογούν το χρόνο που μου πήρε να το ολοκληρώσω. Αλλά δεν το ρίχνω στην καθημερινότητα. Είχε κάτι αόριστο που δεν με τραβούσε να το τελειώσω με μιας, αλλά να το κάνω με το βάσανο της σταγόνας. Μερικές σελίδες εδώ και εκεί. Η πρώτη και η δεύτερη ιστορία ειδικά, ήταν μακράν από τις χειρότερες που έχω διαβάσει ποτέ, ανεξάρτητα από είδος ή συγγραφέα. Βάλτωσε γρήγορα, πριν πάρει λίγο τα πάνω του στη συνέχεια και κλείσει σχετικά καλά.

So this book was a dream come true for me--I adore Graham Masterton and find him hard to find at times and book of short stories and critiques on him--get outta town--never thought I would find it! this little gem was found on Ebay, ordered from Canada and is signed not only by Masterton himself but the artist who illustrated the book and the author/editors as well--very exciting. On top of this the critiques are fascinating, beautifully written and really delve into this amazing author's style. Also, some amazing black and white illustrations and interviews with the man himself as well as a bibliography. I highly recommend this to fans of Masterton but also to newbies to Masterton--the short stories are a great introduction to his cut-throat style!

I have a love/hate relationship with Graham Masterton: even though I like his vivid and gruesome imagination, his sloppy writing often puts me off. This collection of short stories though was a lot to my liking, since the good ideas were not marred by hack writing.
Some of the stories in here, such as "Go, Jack", "Heroine" or "The secret Si-Tan" (sorry about the titles, read it in Greek) were really great, sensual and horryfying. Even the less grim stories were actually good (including a scary horror story about a... guardian angel)

Przeczytałam ten zbiór ze względu na opowiadanie „Wnikający duch” powiązane z cyklem „Manitou”. Oprócz opowiadań znajdują się tu również streszczenia wielu książek Mastertona. Na początku jest nawet spoko, bo można sobie przypomnieć co działo się w poprzednich częściach „Manitou” i potem na spokojnie przeczytać właśnie „Wnikającego ducha”, ale dalej można sobie nieźle popsuć zabawę z innymi książkami tego autora. Niektóre tytuły już czytałam, a niektóre nie. Trochę mnie te streszczenia zachęciły do zapoznania się z całymi historiami, ale z drugiej strony wiem już co mniej więcej się stanie i jak się skończy :( . W sumie około 20% książki to spoilery, których oczywiście nie trzeba czytać. Gdyby je oraz wywiad na końcu wywalić, a zostawić te dzikie, zwyrodniałe opowiadania, dałabym maksymalną ocenę.

4,5/5. Αν και οι συλλογές διηγημάτων γενικά δεν με ενθουσιάζουν, τη συγκεκριμένη πραγματικά την απόλαυσα. Εκτός από το πρώτο που το βρήκα μέτριο, τα υπόλοιπα ήταν το ένα καλύτερο απ'το άλλο.
