In every generation a Princess is born to each island of Sawaiki, blessed with the power to control a single aspect of the natural world. Namaka’s power is arguably the most valuable of them all--in a world of archipelagos and endless ocean, she control the seas themselves.
The mer people of the Worldsea despise her for this power over their domain, all the more so because she can barely control her gift.
At war amongst themselves, they harness this uncontrolled power by possessing Namaka with a mermaid spirit--turning her into one of them.
As Namaka struggles to accept this new existence, she’s faced with conflict above the waves and war below.
And if she cannot control her powers, both her worlds face annihilation.
The Seventh Princess is an original historical fantasy novel based on Hawaiian and Polynesian mythology.
Along with his wife and daughter, Matt lives as a digital nomad, traveling the world while researching for his novels. He reads approximately a bazillion books a year, loves video games, and relaxes by binge watching Netflix with his wife.
Matt writes retellings of mythology as dark, gritty fantasy. His passions of myths, philosophy, and history inform his series. He strives to combine gut-wrenching action with thought-provoking ideas and culturally resonant stories.
As a child, Matt read The Lord of the Rings with his parents. This sparked a lifelong obsession with fantasy and started him on a path of discovering the roots of fantasy through mythology. In exploration of these ideas, the Eschaton Cycle was born—a universe of dark fantasy where all myths and legends play out.
I received this book in return for my complete honest review. As i started this book i was excited because i love fantasy books with lots of action in them. The seventh princess, keeps you turning pages waiting to see what happens next. As for romance or anything like that this book has very little, which makes it a very good choice for a teenager pre teen. From here on out I can't wait to red more of Matt Larkin
After finishing this book I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars. I would give it 3.5, but since I can't.... I settle for 3 stars and I'm looking forward to know if the series will improve from here.
Overall I liked this book, it was an easy read and interesting enough to keep going on. We get thrown right into the middle of things, which is fine, but I think some more world building and explaining would have done good to this story. For a while I struggled with the foreign words and their meaning like mana, kapu, etc. Eventually you grasp their meaning as the story goes though. The writing itself is good enough, and I am interested how the series will progress from here. As for the characters, I liked Namaka and rooted for her to find a solution for her problem. I loved the different places and would have liked to read more about the mer kingdom or about ther lifes more.
This is the second book I read from Matt Larkin, and while I immensly enjoyed Darkness Forged this book lacked something. Maybe because it was predictable, nothing surprised me much, even the betrayal and it was less dark. I would have liked to read more mythology weaved into the story. We get some god names, yes, but not nearly enough in my opinion. But then again, I'm a bit obsessed with mythology so no surprise there.
I have given this book 3½ stars because it is better than a 3 star story. At the age of ten, Namaka was pronounced the princess of Sawaiki and sent to live in a cave with Mo-O (a dragon) to learn the ways of princesshood. At the beginning of this story, Namaka is 17 and not liking the way she is supposed to live her life as the island's princess. For seven years Mo-O has been teaching Namaka about all the gods and princesses that came before Namaka. The 'gift' that sets her apart from her family and her villagers is her control, or lack of, the sea. When her emotions get away from her, the sea reacts, sometimes causing much damage. And now that a ship arrives to Namaka's island home carrying people the village has never dreamed of, Namaka's life IS about to change. Forever. I found the first half of this book a bit repetitive with Namaka wanting to live her life like any other 17 year old villager and not a princess. This causes her to do things the wrong way, causing trouble or damage and then feeling regrets. Constantly. The second half was better and would be terrific visually the times Namaka is underwater.
I give this book a 3.5 star rating. The Seventh Princess is the first book in Matt Larkin's The Worldsea Era series. In each generation there is born a princess with the power to control a single portion of the natural world. When Namaka is a child and she begins to exhibit power, she is named Princess of the Sea which is the greatest power to control.
While she is taught many things regarding being a princess, she never gains control over her power. All she can focus on is what has been denied her during her childhood and it has left her angry. That anger causes the sea to respond and destruction reigns down. It isn't until she loses too much, that she finally begins to understand what having all this power means and how to control it.
Matt Larkin has created a Polynesian type world rich with humans, mermaids, sea dragons, and many other creatures. He is off to a good start and I look forward to reading future books in this series.
Matt takes us on an epic adventure. ..filled with vivid world's and colorful characters. ..Dragons, a "Pigman", weresharks, mer people and octopuses :) Follow Princess Namaka on her journey as it takes her to places you would have never thought she would go! Lots of action, twists and turns...You won't be disappointed!
An action packed adventure full of mystery and intrigue. Namaka is her people's Princess, yet has never accepted fully her role. This story is her journey of acceptance and the battle to save not just her people, but others as well. I highly recommend this book to all.
Šioje knygoje sutalpinta labai daug įvairių pasakų apie princus, princeses, senelius, anūkus, fėjas ir raganas. Šią knygelę vakarais skaitau savo mažajai sesutei ir jai labai patinka.
