Fans of the Hell to Pay series will love this new spin-off saga, Hell’s Legacy!

So, when sweet schoolteacher Sara Lopez raises concerns about his son being bullied, who can blame a guy for getting a little testy?

The last thing Sara needs is any more attention or gossip after her recent breakup with big-shot rancher Hank Brand. So her attraction to surly but sexy Garrison, Hank’s rival, is entirely unwanted. Award-winning and bestselling author and physician Jillian David quickly writes then slowly edits medical romance, paranormal romance, and romantic suspense books. She loves to use medical situations and characters to drive drama in her books. Her favorite cell is the platelet and her least-favorite organ is the pancreas. She fully believes that curse words, when appropriately deployed during surgery, are hemostatic. Which also explains why no book of hers will ever bleed out...

According to multiple starred reviews, Jillian's books cause sleep deprivation and a drop in productivity, as well as visceral responses from her vivid descriptions -- side effects which might qualify as a breach of her Hippocratic Oath to 'do no harm.'

- "Such an awesome read. As soon as I started it, I couldn't put it down. I even stayed home from the gym just to be able to finish this in the same day."

Legacy of Lies is the first book in a brand new series, Hell’s Valley, by Jillian David. I fell in love with this author with her Hell to Pay series so I was so excited to see what this new series would be about. Let me tell you, it was fantastic!

The cowboy:

The family this series will revolve around are the Taggarts. They live on a ranch in Copper River, Wyoming. There is something special about the Taggart siblings. They each have a special ability. The father doesn’t have any such ability so I am hoping that in future books, we will be able to find out more about the origin of these abilities. This book’s Hero, Garrison, is like a human lie detector. He can put his hands on your head and simply go into your mind to see if you are telling the truth or not. But this isn’t always such a good thing such as with his now ex-wife. Everything she said was a lie. She left Garrison and their son, Zach but not before clearing out the bank accounts leaving the ranch in financial trouble.

snow storm in the woods:

The Brand family’s ranch sits adjacent to the Taggart’s. There has been some strange goings on over there lately and some of the Taggart cattle have disappeared. The Brands have also been calling daily to try to harass the Taggarts into selling them their land. Why they are so determined to get their ranch, they have no idea.

Sara Lopez is the second grade teacher at the elementary school and is also Zach’s teacher. Poor Zach has been getting bullied lately and Sara wants to discuss it with his father at their parent-teacher conference. But when the oh so hot cowboy, Garrison Taggart walks in to the classroom, Sara can barely think straight. She absolutely cannot be attracted to this cowboy. She has to stay in Copper River for four years in order to pay off her student loans. Then she is out of here. She has her own checkered past, one the town won’t ever let her forget. Sara made the mistake of dating Hank Brand for a year but his behavior got more and more strange so she broke it off. Sara is determined to refrain from any more emotional connections in this town. She just wants to finish her time at the school and go.

Garrison can’t take much more on his shoulders. His oldest brother is AWOL. So now it’s just Garrison, his younger brother and sister and their Dad whose health isn’t the best lately. The money is scarce and with the trouble the Brands are causing them, the daily never ending chores and trying to raise his son the best he can, he can’t handle much more. There certainly isn’t any room in his life for sexy little school teachers that think they can tell him how to raise his son. But he can’t deny there is something about Sara Lopez. He can’t get her off his mind.

 :

Sara and Garrison had me from the start. I loved them. This book sucked me right in. The chemistry and sexy times were super steamy and the suspenseful times had me holding on for dear life. Hank Brand is most definitely the evil villain. Garrison's interest in Sara sends Hank over the edge which puts the ranch, Sara's safety and little Zach in danger. There are still some unexplained things with what was going on with Hank which I’m hoping will be explained further in books to come.

sexy times

There is no cliff hanger. Sara and Garrison’s story is pretty much brought to a conclusion. I can’t wait to see what Jillian David has in store for us next with the Taggart family.

Life has been kicking Garrison Taggart at every chance. Seems like the weight of the world is falling down on him and he’s unable to juggle all he takes on. The ranch has issues, his father is getting older, his wife walked out on him, his young son is having problems in school and he is just hearing about it from his teacher.

The conference with Sara Lopez does not go well, it seems bullying is involved and the school principal’s nephews are the instigators and Brand family is the Taggart’s arch enemy and biggest competitor for land for grazing. Even his internal lie detector seems to be on the fritz, or maybe Garrison just isn’t listening to it. Through it all? Someone is sabotaging his ranch, and what they are doing is both terrifying and deadly.

Sara takes the hit when Garrison explodes, but she has more on her plate than testy parents. Her life, her job and her student loans are being held over her head and following the Brand rules leaves her emotionally exhausted and walking a thin tightrope of control. Should she stand up for Garrison’s son, following her conscience and her heart or should she look out for herself and just get the school year over with? In spite of his demeanor, there is no doubt that Garrison is a catch and something about the man sets Sara’s girly bits into high gear. But is the feeling mutual? Does Garrison even have time for romance?

When her past and Garrison’s son cross paths with insane evil, it is time to make a stand, no matter the cost and it is only another Taggart with supernatural abilities that could mean the difference between life and a frozen death.

Jillian David is back with another rugged and sexy suspense-filled read with her first book in her new series, Hell’s Valley. Meet a contemporary cowboy/rancher with too much testosterone to seek help, a temper more volatile than a raging bull and the sweet school teacher who has the true grit to be his match and his greatest ally. Together they battle insane jealousy, an insane old lover and near death while struggling to believe in each other and the power of fate and love.

LEGACY OF LIES is a heart-pounding start to what looks to be another fabulous paranormal series from Jillian David who makes her rural settings come to life with jaw-tensing reality. Ms. David brings a feeling of high tension to a fever pitch while tackling small town politics, bullying and fear of the unknown in the deeps woods and plains of Wyoming.

I received an ARC edition from Jillian David in exchange for my honest review.

A paranormal cowboy. Well, I have to say that this is a first. And I liked it!!

Garrison Taggert has major trust issues. But who can really blame him after his wife took off and left him with their son and then emptied out his accounts??? She was a real prize, that one. He's been trying to hold everything together for his family and their ranch. So when his son's new teacher, Sara Lopez, brings up the fact that he's being bullied and asks one too many personal questions, Garrison wonders what her true motives are. It's no secret that Sara's ex-boyfriend is Hank, who clearly hates Garrison's guts. Or that the principal of the school is Hank's brother. Or that the boys bullying his son are none other than Hank's nephews. So of course Garrison uses his psychic powers to detect if Sara's motives are as pure as she claims.

There's a rabidly insane ex, a kidnapping plot, some strange things happening on the ranch, and a force that seems to be hovering over them all and intent on destruction. This turned out to be a surprising intense and suspenseful romance.

"There's Evil in Them Thar Hills" and I'm for one interested in how the author will continue this story.

Wow! Just Wow! Oh, and did I mention wow? David definitely launches her new series with a bang with this novel. I devoured it in a single sitting. This world comes to life with vivid descriptions and intricate world building. The plot is unique and had me guessing. I love how David introduced me to different elements of what is going on in this town and around the area through the various characters that we meet. The uniqueness of the plot combined with the aspects of mystery were gripping. And the danger and suspense? They heightened my connection with the fantastic characters that David develops. The lines between good and evil are somewhat blurred at times, but the characters that I connected with were unforgettable. I love the way that we get to know their different powers and how differently they are presented.

All in all this novel came together as a fantastic start to David's new series that definitely has me hooked. Oh, and the bit of a possible cliffhanger at the ending? Yeah. That's got my attention and definitely has me guessing what will happen next..

Please note that I voluntarily reviewed an ARC copy of this novel.

One of Sara’s students is acting a little weird, so Sara uses the opportunity of a parent-teacher conference to inform the boy’s father of the fact. But Garrison Taggart doesn’t take her offer of maybe providing the child with professional help easily and Sara, despite her misgivings about the child’s wellbeing, thinks this is the end of it.

Little does she know she’ll soon be embroiled in a feud between two families. A feud that might prove deadly...

I don’t know what to think about this one. And I have no idea how to classify it.

It wasn’t a suspense, since the villain is out in the open, only his motive (beside being crazy) remains a mystery.
It wasn’t truly a paranormal, since the hero had a completely useless ability that came conveniently handy only toward the end in a very deus ex machina move.
There was a paranormal element with the villain (the babbling could be discounted, because he was a psycho), but I couldn’t help shake the feeling of having read a similar scene in one of Christine Feehan’s many novels.
And it wasn’t a romance because there wasn’t a romance to be found. Or at least, I couldn’t find it. I felt no vibe between the characters beside attraction (and even that, squint and you miss it). I didn’t know what drew the two of them together but lust—he probably hadn’t gotten laid since the wife left him, and she thought he was hot. There appeared to be no emotion behind it.

The guy was an asshole. After the first scene, I thought he was only having a bad day. Turns out, he had a bad life, because he was a constant asshole. Trust issues or not. As hot as he might be, in a few years that hotness will cool, but he’ll still be an asshole. Yes, he loved his son, but that was pretty much the only redeeming quality he had.
The heroine was an idiot. There’s no other was to say it. Selfish, spineless, insecure with issues disproportionate to what her life story is supposed to be. She had no idea what she wanted, she was inconsistent in her actions, behavior, and thought, and she had no agency. She was in the story in addition to not because of. Take her out of the equation, and everything still happens. Maybe not the same, but it still happens. The feud was there before she appeared, the plot involving the child was in place if she was there or not...She seemed to be an addition to the plot to create more conflict, to provide “relaxation” for the hero and another focal point for the villain.
The villain who, instead of creepy, intense and ominous came across as merely crazy. A template for an abusive ex who can’t accept the new guy in the woman’s life. The added paranormal twist to the guy somehow didn’t work for me, gave me a feeling of déjà vu, appeared heaped on top of everything else, and made the story even more overblown that it already was.
The rest of the characters were simply there, once again with no agency, just extras on set.

Combine all of the above, add to it the stop-and-start pacing, and I couldn’t wait for the story to end. It’s not good when reading becomes a chore.

I have not been fortunate enough to read any of the other works by Ms. David but I am going to change that now. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Garrison Taggert grew up on cattle ranch and is taking over for his father. He has a lot of responsibility that has landed on his shoulders. His wife left him after draining their bank account and now he is raising his son with the help of his father and sister. The ranch is in financial trouble and to top it all off Garrison has a parent/teacher conference with his son's second grade teacher Sara Lopez.

Sara grew up in Copper River and just came back to pay off her student loans working in the school district there. She raises a concern with Garrison about his son getting bullied and that the boys are the principal's nephews. Garrison already thinks she just got the job by dating the principal's brother and the parent/teacher conference spirals out of control from there.

Putting aside her misgivings about dating a student's parent she gives in and goes on a date with Garrison. But do either of them really have time for romance? Sarah just wants to pay off her debt to the school system and get out of dodge and Garrison is so wrapped up in his ranch business and the feud with the Brand's.

The Brand's ranch and the Taggart's ranch share a border and Hank is constantly pressuring the Taggart's to sell the ranch to him. Hank, being Sara's ex, puts a whole other spin on things. Hank thinks he can still control Sara and he says he will put her job in jeopardy if she continues to see Garrison. With the narrowminded community and Sara's own checkered past she doesn't want to stand out more.

When tragedy strikes and Zach, Garrison's son, is kidnapped from school Sara feels responsible. When the two of them end up in an abandoned cabin together with snow piling up and freezing temperatures will Garrison make it in time to save them both? With the family's supernatural powers aid them in finding them in time?

“I care about who you are now. And the woman in front of me is beautiful, intelligent, and hotter than molten lava. If you think that we could have a future together, I want to try. I love you, Sara Lopez.” – Garrison Taggart

Boy, oh, boy! A new book series from one of my favorite paranormal writers - and it's western themed?!

In Jillian David's new series, we follow the lives of the Taggart siblings, who all seem to have more on their plate than just taking care of the family's ranch. Born with supernatural abilities, they all have to struggle through their social life on top of being at odds with their very normal father. Garrison, the second-born of the family, has always been able to read people - determining whether they were being honest or not. But this ability has cost him greatly. Now a single father, he finds himself falling in love with Sara Lopez, his son's teacher. Being burnt once, can he open up to her and finally trust in someone outside his family after so long?

I meant it when I said that this writer is one of my favorites in the paranormal genre. I obviously have others, but there are only a few occasions in life where you find yourself paying special attention to certain authors. And this is one of those. After the Hell to Pay series (which is amazing, by the way, go read it!), she decided to tackle one of my TOP fantasies: cowboys with superpowers! And the result was pretty much awesome!

Not only did I experience the true nature of a rancher's life - the hardships, the downtimes, the day-to-day struggle - but I also had the pleasure of seeing what a HUMAN does when they're born with gifts they don't exactly find convenient. Now, of course, most of us would be ecstatic to have minds with freaking superpowers. But we all speak from a vantage point of convenience, we haven't really experienced it to really now what it's like. The Taggart siblings, though, weren't like that. Their abilities were useful, yes, but they still put a damper on their social lives. They couldn't just connect with someone, because they always had to hide - even their father didn't seem agreeable with what his kids could do. And they could also get hurt, which is often happily ignored in paranormal fiction.

Garrison in particular had his heart broken, and his trust issues made it impossible for him to be what we call a social butterfly. He was moody, and gruff, and his inner hurt made him in turn daily damage whatever bridges he tried to build with those around him. He was quick to anger, and there were times his grudges and stubborness were out of this world!

It was a good thing Sara seemed to be as patient as possible with him, although, to be fair, she too had her issues. Thanks to her past, she tended to misunderstand what others told her - OK, in Garrison's case, he helped that flaw grow even more by constantly keeping his foot in his mouth - and she would, nine times out of ten, blame herself and drown in self-pity whenever something went wrong.

Those two had their hearts broken by the people they had loved. The result was two bitter adults, self-conscious as hell, trying to find common ground. Not that I'm complaining. Their fumbling around was half of the time entertaining, and the other half fantastically HOT! When they finally decided to trust in each other, it was touching how they seemed to keep praising each other, not being able to see their own worth, but somehow recognising their lover's value.

Now on to the supernatural part of the book. It certainly didn't hold much importance for the better half of the story, other than the fact that the siblings were not your everyday ranchers. But near the end, we get to see that our dear Mrs. David just couldn't resist adding her horrifying talent in the mix. That's right, people, if any of you have read the Hell to Pay series, then you know this woman can make you twist around in your seat in an effort to not pee yourself from fear. She doesn't just write awful scenes of torture or scary stuff just to add something in her book. Every one of those has its own chest-pressuring aura of horror, and while they're not massive and they come sparse, they still manage to make you wish you chance upon them while it's still daytime. And they ALWAYS are important and hold significance to the story.

Jillian David is one of those few writers that can actually combine hot, sizzling romance with witty humor and terrifying danger, and make it seem tangible and quite real to the reader. All in the span of a book. And that's saying something, people! She even deliberately had the bad guy repeating his lines again and again, to show how much his psychosis had damaged his common sense and ability to function and think logically. (admittedly, at first I thought it was a typo, but when I realized it wasn't I had to take a break from reading, shivering all over!)

I'm off to start the next book - and btw, I call dibs on Kerr, and ship him with Izzy! If those two don't end up, I sure hope the female lead David will put by his side is worthy of this panties-dropping-quality man!

“I don’t want anyone else, Garrison.” – Sara Lopez

Review:

Legacy of Lies by Jillian David is a new series, and an author I’ve read before. So I eagerly said yes to this book. And I wasn’t disappointed…..

Sara is trying to forget her past, but coming back to her small town life isn’t going to be easy, people have long memories, and once a trouble maker, always a trouble maker. But Sara is now a teacher, she wants to make a difference, and if she can stick it here for a while, then once this job is done, Sara is out of there and she’ll look for a teaching post where no one knows her past.

Garrison is a single dad and a rancher, no time to meet women, and after being taken for every penny by the last woman he trusted, he won’t be in a hurry to trust another one.
His family, except his father, have abilities, he can sense the truth in people, his sister can find people and can feel their emotions, and her twin brother, he had an internal sat nav, he never gets lost, and had the ability to blend into the background. And a big brother who upped and left the family without an explanation (but something is mentioned in the book, that may shed some light on his reason for leaving) we don’t know his ability yet.
The ranch is a family owned ranch, but it’s not doing too well at the moment, and he really doesn’t have time to worry about bullies, and missing family members and his ailing father.
but there is just something about Sara that pulls Garrison in.

Their relationship is full of misunderstandings and distrust. But also filled with passionate kisses and tender moments.
Sara is warned by her ex to stay away from the “Taggart scum”, her boss (her ex’s brother,) also tells her to keep her nose clean, and not to interfere in the bullying of the Taggart “brat” otherwise she will lose her job, and Garrison is warned to stay away from Sara.

There is also a secondary storyline running through, and I’m sure this will be the string that keeps the stories linked.

It’s a great start to what I’m hoping is at least a four possibly five book series

Reviewed on behalf of 2 Girls Who Love Books Blog
I like discovering new talented authors over the blog and I have found some great ones so far. This was a new author for me as well since I haven’t read anything from her so far. The book started good. Great actually. The writing style was very good and kept me in the story. I found it easy to read since there were no mistakes (grammatical or spelling) found throughout the story. The characters were well developed and their actions made sense from how they were portrayed.
The plot itself was exciting and made me turn the pages to get to the final conclusion which was not that surprising, but suspenseful nonetheless. The book ended really good, so no cliffhanger to find here which I really liked. I am not a particular fan of cliffis.
There was just one thing that turned me off and made me really question the whole story and set up for the next books in this series. I started the book thinking I would get a nice romance with some thrilling scenes in it, but what I got was a romance with paranormal infuses that made no sense. I am so sorry, but I think the whole book would have been better off without all those things paranormal in it. It would have worked without it as well if not even better than with it. So I was always wondering where that stuff came from and it was never really answered. It was not really plausible how and why all that stuff happened and dimmed my reading experience.
3 stars for this one. Would be better without the paranormal influences

I received a copy of this book directly from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I really enjoyed Legacy of Lies by Jillian David. It was a strange and fresh new concept of a contemporary rancher-romance juxtaposed with elements of paranormal and thriller, which isn’t something I’ve run across in the past.

Technically speaking, the book was well written. There were no obvious or jarring typos. The narrative was clean, flowed easily, and for the most part, the dialogue was believable and natural.

The main characters were flawed, interesting, and adorable in their strained romance—but I also think they were possibly the weakest point of the story. I liked them—I did, but there was this weird back and forth with the two main characters where they loved each other, but kept self-doubting their way out of the relationship. The way they kept backing out of the romance was irritating, frustrating, and honestly, didn’t make a lot of sense at times. It came across as a bit contrived.

That aside, I still greatly enjoyed the book. The plot was new and interesting, I liked the characters and their development. Had it not been for the constant self-doubt of the main characters, this easily would have gotten 5 stars. I was entertained, and I got sucked into the book. There’s not much more I can ask for. If you enjoy rancher-romances or enjoy contemporary paranormal or romantic thrillers, you’ll probably really enjoy this story. I’d suggest giving it a try.

Actually, it was a nice read, the writing was good, and I enjoyed the plot. The only problem I have with this book is the paranormal element. It pretty much ruined my mood to have a sizzling hot cowboy romance. Don't get me wrong though. The chemistry between Garrison and Sara is sizzling hot, alright. It's just that, in my very humble opinion, the book doesn't need the paranormal element.

Thanks to the author for providing the e-book in exchange for a review.

Who doesn't love a good paranormal romance? I know I love them. This book caught me in from the cover. Wow thought there could be some great looking guys in this book. I am not too much into westerns though. So, I was a little spectacle on this part. Garrison Taggert is a great character and dad. There is many elements to this book that come together well for. I was a little surprised how much I enjoyed it. * I received this book from the author---Here is my honest review*

This is a terrific start to a new series.

Garrison Taggart has always lived on the ranch that he is now running for his father. There is always lots to do and not enough hours in a day to do everything so when his son's second-grade teacher, Sara Lopez, tells Garrison that Zach is having trouble at school he doesn't handle it well. Sara wants the best for her students so she asks Garrison personal questions hoping to get a better idea of Zach's issues, but that worries Garrison even more. He's afraid she has seen a paranormal ability in his son since the rest of the family has them. Sara was actually concerned about the Brand boys bullying Zach. Some of the Brands hate the Taggarts and are making life pretty bad for them.

I liked the characters in this book. Well, except for Garrison. While he was physically perfect and very competent at running the ranch, his personality left a lot to be desired. He was very brisk and somewhat grumpy. Of course, he had lots of reasons for this, like his wife leaving him a year ago and cleaning out his bank accounts - leaving him with financial problems, the Brands trying to get his land, his father's health and his son being bullied are just some of his problems. Sara was a wonderful woman but she had her own problems. She was still trying to live down the trouble she caused in this town when she was younger. She also had to stay in her job for 4 years in return for her college education, so no matter how hard she found it she had to stay in there.

With the unusual abilities, these cowboys had this wasn't a typical western romance. It was interesting to see the way the author worked out the feelings Sara and Garrison had for each other. Garrison tried to hide his feelings for her because she used to date one of the Brand men, and he didn't know if he could trust her. The suspense had me on the edge of my seat! I couldn't read fast enough to find out what happened with the kidnapping. There are some REALLY evil people in this story, adding to the suspense.

I am so glad I won a copy of this book and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series. If you enjoy romantic suspense with a paranormal twist, you should read Legacy of Lies.

The Hell’s Valley series is paranormal western series about hot, psychic cowboys. Legacy of Lies follows a woman named Sara in rural town called Copper River. It’s such a small town where everyone knows everybody and their business. Nothing is a secret in this tight-knit rancher community. Sara first meets Garrison through his son, Zach’s parent-teacher conference and there is immediate chemistry. But Sara’s ex-boyfriend is Hank Brand which causes a problem as there is a beef between the Taggart and Brand family.

On top of everything, the Taggart family has special supernatural abilities. Shelby, Garrison’s younger sister, has a gift where she could read others’ emotions. Garrison has a lie-detector ability to see when people are telling the truth. And Garrison’s other brother Kerr, has GPS/tracking powers. I thought the psychic abilities were an interesting aspect and it was exciting to see them in action at certain critical points of the story.

I was pleasantly surprised to how this story tuned out through the course of the book. I usually do not go for cowboy books but something about this series has me hooked. I even devoured it in one sitting. The story caught me off guard and went into a direction I was not expecting and it keeps the readers on their toes.
The writing is also great! The details in Davids prose really immerse the reader into the whole experience. I felt like i was actually there on the ranch with the character. I liked the alternating POVs and being able to see the story from multiple views. This is a romance novel with the constant sizzling chemistry between Sara and Garrison and the great steamy scenes. But there’s also many action scenes that are engaging the book has some mystery/thriller elements with some of the events that occur in the story.

Sara Lopez has a police record and a less-than-respectable family background. However, she’s back in town and she’s trying very hard to turn around her life. Will the small hometown give her a chance? Garrison Taggart comes with his own baggage and according to the gossip he now has his own demons. Will fate give them a chance?

Unfortunately I didn’t have the time to read this book in one sitting and maybe this is the reason why I felt that the book lacked a bit in atmosphere. However, and if I remember correctly, there were very few descriptions that would create a background against which the plot could unravel. The Taggart family offered a very interesting set of sub characters and right now Shelby is my favorite. Garrison is a substantial main character, with great devotion to his child and family. Sara on the other hand is a worthy female lead character. I liked her “down to earth” approach in matters and in her life. Undeniably there was an attraction between those two right from the beginning but somehow I didn’t FEEL the pull, which brings me back to my initial point regarding atmosphere.

There was a strong paranormal undercurrent in this book. Not that I’m a big fan of this genre but I’ve to admit that these abilities were nicely integrated into the plot and didn’t impact the overall storyline too much. Moreover, it didn’t overshadow the relation between Sara and Garrison.

This book is the first installment of a series dealing with the various siblings and family members. I understand that the “big plot” can’t be unraveled already in book one of the series. However, I like to be involved in solving the crime and might’ve appreciated a clue that would’ve pointed me in the right direction. In any case, a nice and carefree read.

I received this book to give an honest review.

So I was told this book was a western romance and for some reason I had it set it in my head that I probably wouldn't like it because I am not a fan of western books. That being said I finally was able to get to this book and I was really amazed at how much I was into. It didn't feel a western. Just a really hot dad who has a lot on his shoulders and works a ranch.
We are introduced to Sara who has come back to Copper River to work as a teacher then she plans to move on. She knows being a small town everyone likes to talk and they are probably talking about her.
We are also introduced to Garrison who is dealing with his ex-wife leaving, trying to work on the ranch and most importantly take care of his son. I honestly think if Garrison didn't have his family there to help him out a bit he would probably have broke.
Slowly but surely a romance comes about between the two characters yet it isn't easy for them both. Hank Sara's ex will be play a big role and he doesn't seem to have all his gears working right because he will stop at nothing to have what Garrison has.
I did like the psychic element that was within the book that was actually pretty cool though I would have liked more background to the family's ability, also I liked how much it was about family for Taggart clan.
I think the author did a neat job of building up the action and the danger that was becoming present.
I did notice that there was a book two and I will be reading it.

I am really torn between 3 and 3.5 stars. I was expecting a cowboy romance, which I received. There was a paranormal aspect thrown in, which I didn't mind, and it was interesting to a point.

The paranormal abilities of the Taggert family were thrown into the story with not much explanation. Ok...Garrett can do this, Shelby can do that, Kerr can do something else, and Dad can't do anything. Wait. I started out reading a cowboy romance that morphed into a family with psychic abilities. Did I miss something?

In all honesty, I went back and started the book over. Maybe I'm dense, but the hints thrown out in the first chapter were not significant enough for me to think "psychic" or "paranormal" .

I also thought Garrett was the oldest until around chapter 7 when I discovered Vaughn was the oldest.

Garrett and Sara's relationship felt like a stream of hits and misses. I really wanted them to get together. They had chemistry, and a real attraction. They each had so much baggage, I didn't think they would overcome it. Garrett spent most of his time being angry, and Sara spent most of her time blaming herself for EVERYTHING.

Next, there was really no clear explanation for how or why Hank changed. Never any clear explanation of Hank's entire situation and the associated actions.

I felt like there were so many unexplained factors in this book. It left me feeling unsatisfied. It made me wonder if Garrett and Sara ended up with a HEA or a HFN.

Lies Revealed and Hope Found

Garrison Taggart and his siblings each have a secret paranormal sensory power. However, each of their powers comes at a physical cost.

Garrison's power is the ability to discern a lie, except in his own personal life. Hence his divorce a year ago. Now he's a loving, but bitter, single dad. It's complicated.
Sara Lopez has a checkered past that she's been trying to live down for years. She's come back to her home town as a teacher, and wouldn't you know she has Garrison Taggart's son Zach in her class. Sigh. It's complicated.

Legacy of Lies is book one in the Hell's Valley series by Jillian David. Although it started a bit slow as the back stories were revealed, the paced soon picked up and was steady up to and through the dramatic end. The writing is descriptive and the dialogue believable, even with all the emotional baggage of both Sara and Garrison.

For those who like stand-alone books with HEA endings and epilogues, you may be disappointed with this ending. The issues between Sara and Garrison are resolved. However the over-arching danger will not be revealed until the other siblings have their happy endings.

Content alert: This book contains both swearing (secular and religious), as well as descriptive sexual content.

Disclosure: I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily review this book. This is my honest review.

FYI: I also posted my review on Amazon (as Rural Reader) and on Book Bub.

This book is the start of the Taggart Family story. The story is set in Copper River Wyoming. Garrison Taggart is the second oldest in the family but is tasked to run the ranch because the oldest brother took off. His son Zach is in Sara Lopez's class. She so far is the only teacher that stands up to Garrison and actually speaks her mind and asks him about his ex-wife leaving and if that behavior affected his son. The Brands are a family who live next door to the Taggart's and all but 1 (Izzy) started acting weird a year before the story and suddenly want to take all of the Taggart's down. The whole Taggart clan has special abilities. By the end of the book Garrison's ability morphs into something bigger than it was before. One part of the story line is about Sara and Garrison and the other is about the crazy Brand family and what evil scheme they are involved in.
In a couple of pages I realized I recognized the names of some of the family members. I looked back and figured out it is because I read book 3 first. It was nice to look at more of the family. I even hunted down the rest of the books in the series just to make sure I could read up on everyone.

3.5 stars.

This book starts out as a cowboy romance, with a young woman trying to overcome her small town past and the grouchy single dad she has to deal with in an attempt to secure the boy’s happiness. But from quite early on it becomes obvious that this is more than just a cowboy contemporary, because Garrison isn’t just grumpy, he’s a psychic who can tell when someone is telling lies.

From there this book steadily moves on with the attraction between Sara and Garrison swiftly turning into a romance, which is in turn put under threat by the creepy ex Hank. Throw in some family drama and the pace of the story certainly helps keep things interesting.

However, there were a few things I would have liked to know more about. Such as the paranormal powers of Garrison and his siblings. They all have them, but it seems their father doesn’t. Where did they come from and why?

Then there’s Hank’s family. Sara is best friends with Hank’s sister, but I got confused as to how many Brands there are and how some of them could suffer such a massive shift in behaviour without anyone really noticing. It also frustrated me how much they were allowed to get away with. They just do what they want and people barely complain, let alone do anything about it.

I wish more had been done about Garrison’s son. Discussions of his behaviour and wellbeing might have started the book, but they get pushed back as the story progresses. Yes, okay, loads of other stuff is happening, but I still would have liked more thought for the boy. I also would have liked to have shaken Sara hard a couple of times with her insistence that it’s all her fault, even when the bad guy is ranting about how much he hates the Taggarts. In this instance, Sara, it really isn’t all about you. In fact, it’s barely about you at all.

Overall this is a good read, which sets things up for this series. A bit more depth and explanation to the town and the paranormal aspects would have been nice, but on the whole it makes for an interesting, easy read with a bit of romance and a hint of the paranormal, all mixed in with cowboys and local trouble. I’d certainly be interesting in seeing where it all heads next.

This is my first time reading this author and while I am not a huge paranormal reader – I found this to be an interesting read. With that said I would have liked a little more romance tossed in, but maybe that will all happen further in the series. I felt like this was a great start to learning about the Taggart’s and Brand’s – rival ranchers.

Garrett Taggart and Sara Lopez have a car full of baggage between them. I could feel the attraction between them seeping out of the pages. But will their attraction and chemistry be enough to get them through the events taking place out at the ranch?

The Brands’ are making life miserable for the Taggart’s – they want the all the ranch land and will do everything in their “power” to get it. The “Great One” is helping them along the way. Again, with that said, how did this mysterious change happen to Wyatt and Hank? There is no explanation to the why and the crazy actions taken by both men.

Overall, the mystery of The Great One and the antics that ensue, kept me turning the pages to see what would happen next. Moving on to book two!!

Small town ranching community. Single father of a troubled 8-year-old son. A teacher with a past. Throw in some supernatural abilities and the romance thickens.

The Brands are hard to avoid. Their ranch is next door, one brother runs the local hardware store, another is school principal, twin boys are in the same school, their father the sheriff, ranchers congregate at the only cafe in town.

The combination of paranormal, esp, and insanity create a milieu that is broken all too often by lack of editing and glaring grammatical errors. Several times the author even misspells her principal character’s name. As the title suggests the hero of the piece has been betrayed on many levels. I am confused as to why a man in possession of a rifle would prefer to resort to a slug match with a crazed maniac with seemingly superhuman strength.

The book smacks of a text hammered out quickly and published without any review. After waffling over their relationship for 250 pages the final reconcialtion rings rather hollow.

A unique blend of country romance with a touch of paranormal suspense. Garrison is a single parent and struggling rancher. Sara is a new elementary school teacher working in her home town with a past she just can’t seem to escape. When a Garrison and Sara meet at school during parent teacher interviews, sparks immediately fly. Living in a small town also has its challenges. Sara’s boss is her ex-boyfriend Hank’s brother. Everyone in town knows that Garrison’s ex-wife initiated the divorce and left him virtually broke. As challenges at school, the ranch and in the relationship domain emerge, some very strange behaviours (particularly displayed by Hank) become more evident over at the Brand ranch. Of course this is owned by Hank’s family and the neighbouring ranch belongs to Garrison’s family. Power struggles, kidnapping and paranormal elements entwine to provide an interesting plot and overall a good read ending with what I interpret as a HFN. A highly suspenseful paranormal romance, this novel keeps the tension riding high. Sara has had a less than stellar past, and regrettably, there are people who won't let her forget it. Garrison is buried in troubles with his ex-wife leaving him, the damage and thefts of his property and the on-going harassment from the Brand family. It becomes clear that the central point of all the trouble is Hank Brand, and he appears to have an incredible hold over the rest of his family. As Garrison and Sara begin trying to iron out some of the problems, the troubles escalate, drawing Sara into the melee. The book is a standalone, but does close with a number of unanswered questions. So I already knew the author was awesome, but this proves to me she is as versatile as she is imaginative and descriptive! An awesome romance centering on ranching and horses and small town life with tiny hints of paranormal activity dotted throughout.

What could easily be just another psychotic ex-boyfriend story is turned into a fantastic trip through the lives of the Taggert family. From rustlers to arson to kidnapping, she wraps you up in their lives and takes you on a roller coaster of emotion.

Great New Series!

Wow, I loved the concept of a family of ginger ranchers with slightly different and useful mental abilities. I think they call that type of brain "neurodivergent" nowadays. I"ll still call it "paranormal" - thank you very much! The plot moved quickly which made putting the book down nearly impossible. Man, I really hope Hank is dead, but maybe confirmation will appear in another book in the series? In addtion, the author wrote some pretty funny dialogue in many parts which I found to be immensely entertaining, and it really solidified the characters' personalities. I look forward to reading more books in the series.

Since I had previously read the 3rd and 4th book in this series, I decided to read this one when offered a free copy from eBook Discovery. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. I had liked those books but I didn't care for this one. It started out well building the relationship between Sara and Garrison and the growing fear that Sara felt for Hank Brand. What turned me off to the book was Hank's cruelty towards Sara and towards Garrison's son. There is some steam in this book, which I skimmed over. It's an interesting story, but just not for me.

From the get-go this book will pull you in and have you flipping pages...just one more...just one more: be ready to read in one sitting. It's heart-gripping with a HEA but before you get there you have to earn it! Thankfully the author throws in some steamy scenes to heat up the pages along with the intrigue! I got this book free but I'm giving an honest review. The storyline the characters and the basic premise are quite good however I found that the sex scenes interrupted the storyline and instead of devoting all those pages to that it would been better had the author developed some of the characters especially the antagonist there was a lot of opportunity to incorporate some foreshadowing which did not happen but could've enhance the storyline
