It has all the trappings of a morally-grey story, of nature versus civilization, of gods and enlightenment, of people and beasts... but it ends up throwing all of that away and making the humans here all seem pretty unreasonable and honestly mad.
Good art, good feels, but the missed opportunity nixes half a star.

J'ai trouvé cette BD très poétique, et les illustrations et les couleurs y participent grandement. A lire !

Ein Menschenopfer, das von den Göttern verschmäht wird. Zusammen mit den Erdtönen und den niedlichen Darstellungen klingt dies auf den ersten Blick nach einem lieblichen Märchen. Ist es aber nicht. Schnell wird der exotische mittelamerikanische Einschlag der frankomexikanischen Künstlerin deutlich (obgleich sie in Frankreich geboren und aufgewachsen ist), denn die Opferszene erinnert stark an die indigenen Riten vergangener Zeiten. Bis auf das kleine Detail, dass die Götter in Form von Tiergestalten auf Erden wandeln.
Es entwickelt sich nach und nach eine erstaunlich vielschichtige Geschichte, die von Liebe, Krieg und Intrigen handelt und die zeigt, dass der Mensch immer schon als Wesen auftritt, das sich seine Natur untertan macht. Auch entgegen jeglicher Vernunft. Xipil ist dabei die tragische Hauptfigur. Eine junge Frau, die geopfert werden soll und stattdessen an die Seite des Bärenkönigs tritt. Allerdings ist sie in ihrem Auftreten durch und durch unsympathisch, uneinsichtig und starrhalsig. Bei mir konnte sie nicht punkten.
Der erste optische Eindruck bleibt das gesamte Werk über bestehen, wobei die Tierverbundenheit durch die Farbgebung sehr gut unterstrichen wird. Hier und da werden die Gewaltdarstellungen durchaus sehr explizit dargestellt. Ebenso wie die Sexszenen. Kein Buch für einen prüden Leser.
Das Ende ist in meinen Augen etwas gewöhnungsbedürftig. Und auch wenn dieser Einzelband nicht nach einem Nachfolger schreit, finde ich das Ende ein wenig zu offen. Hier hätte ich mir einen runderen Abschluss erhofft. Das ist aber der einzige Kritikpunkt, den ich anbringen kann, denn ansonsten ist die Geschichte sehr gut erzählt.

An entertaining tale, about self-discovery, compromise and tough choices.
The visual art is delicate and mostly heartwarming, even if there are some rather tense and violent moments.
Some may view this graphic novel as a mix of "The Jungle Book" and "Pocahontas", but the story is original, stands on its own and makes for an enjoyable read (and comes with a few twists).
The end is a bit open ended, but it has enough closure to satisfy most readers.
All in all, a quick but enjoyable book.

El arte es muy bonito. El buen gusto y el detalle para dibujar a animales y humanos es estupendo. Lo que me quedó a deber es la historia. Por un lado trata de establecer un mito de los dioses de la selva y su relación con los humanos, pero el mito no se sostiene cuando trata de establecer un nuevo estatus dentro del mundo de los dioses, y luego cambia otra vez. Esperaba que en algún momento se decidiera por un rumbo, pero el final se precipita y resulta un tanto insatisfactorio ... sobre todo tomando en cuenta el título.

nooo! il n'y a pas de suite, pas de tome 2? je suis dans le choc. ça ne peut pas finir comme ça ! est ce qu'elle a fait la meilleure choix? il est facile à dire qu'elle n'aurais pas du traiter avec le caïman mais elle avait des dettes et des obligation qu'elle n'a même pas demandé. je vous conseil cette histoire mais je vous préviens que la fin vous laissera un peu déçu.

Jolie histoire dont les dessins magnifiques de détails et d'émotions rendent le lecteur contemplatif. Les animaux sont superbes et l'histoire est vraiment... Envoûtante ? Je n'arrive pas à trouver le mot parfait. Lecture que je conseille absolument, autant pour ses dessins que pour son histoire : Mobidic a une plume qui rend sa bande dessinée immersive ! J'espère une suite et ne suis pas la seule

Very mixed on this one. On the one hand, the art is beautiful and there's genuinely the makings of a great story in here. On the other, it's very rushed and because of this the story and characters suffer for it.
So overall a lot of potential in this and great artwork, but too fast for its own good.

I enjoyed the read and felt for the character but felt like the plot was compressed to keep within one tome. Essentially nothing is known about before she was set out for sacrifice despite various hints and such that demanded flashbackery but got none. Then, the story felt tremendously rushed through and finished open-ended, with untapped potential to continue, ultimately leaving me wondering why she titled it so illogically.

The art, with such appropriate settings and items that fill heady atmospheres, is absolutely wonderful. I have never seen a better body painting- she paints her full body in the 'dia des muertos' fashion to pass as a death goddess! Plus, just like Jeronaton managed so expertly, her Native Americans are ethnically authentic in their nudity.

It's an interesting story. It starts rather romantic, but soon becomes a grey and troubling tale of revenge and what we do for loved ones. At the end I feel genuinely unsure whether the MC made the right choice, and I think that's a good feeling to have at the end of a story. I do, however, understand what others are saying in terms of the story being rushed. I think it could've done with a bit more pages to explore the characters more at least.
The art is very lovely and atmospheric, and it's nice to see a fantasy work that's indigenous-coded instead of the usual medieval Europe. I will say that for a story that deals with animal gods, I missed just a tad of otherworldliness.
Definitely a work I'll keep in my collection.

Bärenkönig hat einen wunderschönen Zeichenstil und wartet mit einer überraschenden Erzählart auf. Dadurch wurde mein Bedenken, indigene Völker könnten hiermit abgewertet werden, bei Seite geschoben. Die Kritik an den Menschen wird auch klar im Sinne der ganzen Menschheit dargestellt. Es werden immer wieder die gleichen Fehler gemacht und nur die Hoffnung bleibt, dass die nächste Generation es besser machen möge.

Con respecto a la historia, se divide en dos partes: La primera es sobre los dioses mamíferos, y me pareció simplemente "okey"; pero la segunda parte, que es sobre los dioses reptiles, es donde realmente se puso épico, ¡bárbaro! (en mi humilde indigna opinión). Recomendado a cualquier amante de las historietas raras.

Vivant au Mexique j'ai adoré voir représentés des personnages qui ressemblent aux gens qui m'entourent (et coucou mon mari) et de voir des références à la culture aztèque, notamment par l'utilisation du nahuat. Les dessins sont magnifiques, l'histoire crue et dure mais hélas peut-être un peu trop rapide.

Beautiful art, a little sexist...
I like the idea of this story a lot, but it felt super short and almost like a part 1 of a series.
But I think it's a stand alone story?? So if that's true I felt it was quite lacking.
Definitely worth reading it for the art alone.

🐻J’ai apprécié les graphiques et l’intrigue très prenante, mais j’ai l’impression d’être restée sur ma faim avec cette fin, de ne pas avoir compris quel message l’autrice voulait faire passer.

Les images de ce livre sont magnifiques, le monde créé est captivant et les péripéties sont bien construites. La fin donne envie de connaître la suite et de comprendre l'impulsivité du personnage principale qui a amené à venger son mari-dieu malgré les conséquences qu'elle connaissait avant de passer à l'action.

Дівчинку, яку приносять в пожертву богині-крокодилу, рятує бог-ведмідь і бере собі за дружину. Цікавезна зав'язка, непоганий гумор, красивий малюнок - і дуже слабкий сюжет. Закінчення дещо розчарувало, судячи за все малося на увазі продовження, але його поки що не випущено.
