Now yes, Duden: Die deutsche Rechtschreibung is considered the standard guidebook for German orthography, for how to correctly spell German words (and how to correctly use punctuation like commas, periods etc.). And delightfully, this here 21st edition of Duden: Die deutsche Rechtschreibung from 1996 (and thus published in the same year as the mandatory orthography reform) actually puts ALL of the required, mandatory spelling and punctuation changes in red, which I certainly have appreciated since this definitely makes it much much easier to check if I am spelling words correctly or using German punctuation correctly and according to the 1996 rules. And truth be told, I do need to sometimes check, since I learned how to write in German long before the neue deutsche Rechtschreibung. But while I am now (in 2022) of course mostly sufficiently familiar with those 1996 orthographical changes, I still do sometimes want to verify, and it certainly has been a boon and a godsend that the 1996 edition of Duden: Die deutsche Rechtschreibung (which I received as a gift from my PhD supervisor) uses a different colour for what is now different regarding German spelling and punctuation, as it definitely speeds up doing research having the latter, having the differences, the changes appear in bright red.

However and in my humble opinion, the fact that Duden: Die deutsche Rechtschreibung is both extensive and intensive and really does list ALL aspects of German orthography in a very minutely small font (with over 900 pages) and using explanations that are often not all that easy to understand unless one is not only fluent in German but also fluent in densely penned academic German, this does tend to make Duden: Die deutsche Rechtschreibung rather reader and research unfriendly and not really all that suitable as a basic and general guidebook on how to spell German words and how to punctuate German sentences for GSL students and in fact for most individuals who do not have an advanced university level education equivalent in German (and even for me, I ONLY use Duden: Die deutsche Rechtschreibung to check the red changes, and that is already difficult enough and sometimes downright frustrating).

Therefore, while I personally do definitely get a lot of practical use from my 1996 Duden: Die deutsche Rechtschreibung for checking on questions regarding the new standard German orthography (and no, I am not sure if the more recent editions are still showing the 1996 spelling and punctuation changes in red or if this is no longer the case since we should supposedly by now be familiar with these), I also would not really recommend Duden: Die deutsche Rechtschreibung as a basic and general German orthography guide, as it is in my humble opinion much too complicated, too convolutedly penned and also too all encompassing for learning the basics.

Wichtiges Nachschlagewerk für jeden, dem die (deutsche) Sprache am Herzen liegt. Steht immer auf meinem Schreibtisch. Welche Hilfs- und Nachschlagewerke für das Schreiben habt ihr in Reichweite?

The famous DUDEN. Many words, many explanations about orthographic rules, quite useful at times. Still worth of improvement, in my opinion. Another star less for not having the word "Torus" included.
