A fiercely independent duchess and a brooding, reclusive earl are tested by the demands of desire in this unforgettable romance from the USA Today bestselling author of A Kiss of Lies and A Night of Forever.
For Rose Deverill, one husband was enough. As the wealthy widow of the Duke of Roxborough, she has cultivated an unsavory reputation meant to discourage wife hunters. Thanks to a string of steamy affairs, Rose is perfectly content to be known by polite society as the “Wicked Widow”—until she’s reunited with the man she fell in love with at age fifteen. Their bedroom encounters are scorching, but it breaks Rose’s heart to wonder whether her reckless behavior ruined her for Philip Flagstaff.
The second son of the Earl of Cumberland, Philip never wanted the title. But after Philip’s older brother, Robert, follows him into the Battle of Waterloo, his worst fears come to pass. Now Robert lies in a soldier’s grave, and Philip is determined never to pass on the inheritance to children of his own. Then Rose appears, soothing the pain with her delightful curves and passionate kisses. The notorious Duchess seems to want nothing from him—and yet Philip has never ached to give a woman more.

My Opinion: I really liked this story. It was written well and I fell in love with Rose. She came out a widower and instead of conforming to what others wanted, she did what she wanted. She had a free spirit and was a strong character. But, I couldn't get over Philip's vow that he never really made to his brother, just to himself. I don't know. It went to extremes. I could have used a bit less of his brother shadowing the book.
There were a few twists and turns in the book and near the end I was a bit surprised on where the story went. Which was a great thing. It kept me reading. I loved how Philip was with Rose and her son when they were all together. It really seemed sweet and genuinely like a nice family setting. There was a lot of passion in the book and that was a plus. I like how descriptive the author was. Somethings were a little rushed at the end of the book but that was ok. I overall really enjoyed reading this one.
I give this book 4 of 5 stars!

Thank you Netgalley for sending me an ARC of this book! All opinions are my own and not influenced in any way.
A Love to Remember is a historical romance novel about Rose and Phillip, two people who have always loved each other but refused to marry. Eventually, Rose does want to marry and have children, but Phillip is still dead set against that lifestyle, so they break up. Unfortunately, they still have feelings for each other and have to cope with being alone. Will they end up back together, stay friends, or what?
I didn't really like the plot until the last 1/3 of the book, where everything became high stakes and dangerous. Rose was the typical "strong, independent woman" up to a point where she seemed to just become useless and dependent on Phillip for everything. I understand wanting to marry, there's nothing wrong with that, but she just becomes so helpless and fragile.
The romance was interesting. There weren't many sex scenes, which surprised me, considering most adult romance novels have one almost every chapter. The relationship between Phillip and Rose was very dependent and needy, and it seemed a bit uncomfortable to read about at times.
The book wasn't amazing, but for what it was, it wasn't horrible. If you want a quick, sappy romance novel with some actually decent plot, this is for you.
Series: The Disgraced Lords #7 Publication Date: 8/29/17
Suspenseful, romantic, and filled with complex characters Bronwen Evans Disgraced Lords series always has a place at the top of my must read list. She doesn’t shy away from dealing with some of the darker issues – sometimes much to my dismay. However, this book isn’t dark. It is a journey to acceptance and redemption from a deep grief and guilt.
Widowed, Rose Deverill, Duchess of Roxborough, has decided that she will never, ever marry again and she has cultivated a reputation that will assure that will be the case. She’s had many lovers since becoming a widow and she makes sure none of them stay around long enough to get serious with her. I liked her and how much she loved her son, but she felt pretty modern to me.
Philip, the Earl of Cumberland, never expected nor wanted to be the Earl. He is eaten up with grief and guilt at the death of his older brother Robert. You see, it is basically his fault Robert died. Philip escaped into the military and the war – and Robert bought a commission and followed him – to keep him safe. As you learn why Philip did that, you will realize that yes, he does bear a good portion of the guilt for Robert’s death – but – nobody that is close to Philip points out that Robert was a grown man, an Earl, head of the family and yet he made his own decision to follow Philip into war. Philip has vowed he will never marry and produce a family because he feels that would be profiting from Roberts death.
Rose and Philip reconnect on the day of Robert’s funeral. They had been friends since childhood. Rose comforted Philip and they became lovers. With neither of them wanting to marry, that relationship worked really well for them. But then, Rose realizes she wants to marry and she knows, in her heart, that Philip loves her. She doesn’t take into consideration how very stubborn he will be in holding on to his guilt.
When the lives of Rose and her son are threatened, Philip must manage to save them and come to grips with his feelings. He has to decide if he will continue to refuse to be happy or if he will grab it with both hands.
The villain in the book is quite a surprise, but I won’t tell you anything about them.
"I requested and received this book at no cost to me and volunteered to read it; my review is my honest opinion and given without any influence by the author or publisher."
'A Love to Remember' by Bronwen Evans is Book Seven in "The Disgraced Lords" series. This is the story of Rose Deverill widow of Duke of Roxborough and Philip Flagstaff, The Earl of Cumberland. Rose is Phillip's sister Portia best friends, so Rose has known Phillip since they were young. Rose has since become a Widow and even been kicked named “Wicked Widow” since she has taken several lovers since her husbands death. Rose also has a young son who she loves very much. Rose has sworn to never marry again, and that is one of the reason she encourages her reputation. Phillip was the second son of The Earl of Cumberland. Phillip had decided to join the war where his older brother, Robert follows him into the Battle of Waterloo. But his brother was killed there and now he has returned home to bury him. Phillip is feeling guilty for his brother's death because he feels it was his fault this brother joined to help protect him. Now at his brother's funeral he meets Rose again who is beautiful and caring, Phillip thinks to get lost in her to help ease some of the hurt and guilty feeling he has. Now two years later he and Rose are still sleeping together and they don't keep their relationship a secret. Rose is now 26 years old and her son is 5 years old and his guardian is Lord Kirkwood who was a friend of her husband and father. Lord Kirkwood seems to be easy going with Rose and allows her to act as she wants but she knows that sometime soon he will want to her make another marriage. Rose has started to think that she would marry Phillip if he asked but when does a Lord marry their mistress and besides he has so much guilt for his brother's death still will he be able to ever move on? A Love to Remember had the perfect ingredients: a hero haunted by the past and a heroine who would make him see that he deserves to be happy. Too bad that in the end everything was very quickly wrapped up with a nice bow.
Rose is always described as an independent woman who doesn’t want to get married, but we readers only get to know her when she wants to get married again and, in my opinion, she shows very little of her independence – which made her a character I didn’t particularly liked.
Philip is the typical tortured hero, which made sense, and in the end of the book he gets to the conclusion that he should be happy and honour his brother by having a nice life.
My problem with this book it that it was mainly contrary to the synopsis. And the little mystery it had I figured it out right away. The characters all felt weak to me and, honestly, I should stop now or it will only get worse.
A Love to Remember is the seventh book in The Disgraced Lords series by Bronwen Evans.
Rose Deverill is a widow and is happily so. She was married off to a much older man who only wanted to beget an heir and once that happened he was more than happy to have no other 'relations' with her. Since his death, Rose has had some lovers and hasn't hidden the fact. In fact, she's exaggerated it because she doesn't want any other offers of marriage. She is happy with her independence and with her life bringing up her son.
Philip the Earl of Cumberland only received the title after his older brother was killed at war saving him. The guilt has eaten at Philip ever since and in order to try to appease that guilt he swears he will never marry, nor produce an heir so that the next brother in line to the title will receive it once Philip dies.
Rose and Philip reconnect with each other at Robert's (Philip's older brother) funeral. They practically grew up together and Rose has had the biggest crush on him since she was a teenager. It was no hardship to offer him solace from intimacy at a time when he needed a distraction from his pain. Solace that Philip readily accepted especially as he knows that she never wants marriage or to be tied in any way.
That was the start of a steamy, passionate two-year relationship for them. As time goes on Rose realises that she wants nothing more than for Philip to want to marry her. But when she realises that the dream will never become a reality she must put an end to the affair. Not only does that cause much pain for our couple, but it also sets into action a chain of events that finds Rose and her son Drake in dreadful peril. Will Philip be able to save them both, and will he finally realise that his self-imposed punishment is not what Robert would have wanted?
This was such an exciting, emotional, riveting story that I had to read it as quickly as possible to find out how it ended. There was so much drama, and what a shock I had when I realised who the villain in the story is! I loved the passion between Philip and Rose and really wish I could have given Philip a shake when he couldn't seem to get past his martyrdom. I think the author handled the ending very well and most certainly in a believable way.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers' copy of this book.
Oh how I love this book. I could bearly put it down to sleep. I have read every book in The Disgraced Lords series and have love them all but they pale in comparison to this book. I don't know where to start and I wish I could simply said, "just go read this book you will love it" and be done but I can't. Philip Flagstaff the second son to a Earl was always doing something wrong and needing his family to save him. After a particularly bad financial investment he decides to enroll in the Kings army. His brother Robert the Earl of Cumberland follows him in to service in hopes to protect him. After stepping in front of a fatal blow meant for Philip Robert dies leaving Philip as the new Earl, and a guilt that weighs heavy on is soul. He whole heartedly believes the wrong brother died. Rose Deverill never had her season, her fafter married her off at eighteen to a man old enough to be her grandfather. The good that came out of her loveless marriage was her son Drake. She prayed everyday to be a widow and vowed never to remarry and live as a free woman. After discovering what sexual pleasure was in the following years she become known as the Wicked Widow and she truly could not care. Rose's best friend is Portia, Philip's sister and as a young girl she fancied herself in love this him. On the day of Robert's funeral hours after everyone had gone she convinces Philip to leave his graveside and go home. On that day he found comfort in Rose's arms, now two years later their affair is still strong but things have changed. Rose truly loves Philip and he her but he will not allow himself any true happiness. He made a promise to himself to make Robert proud of him but he will not marry and the Earldom will go to his brother Thomas or his children. Rose wants more, she wants children, Philip's children. Can she convince him he deserves happiness and love or will he put his guilt in front of everything. The sexual heat in this book is off the charts. The dialog is witty and characters are fun but also sadness and heartache. There is suspense and twists and turns that I did not see coming. I can't not wait for the next book A Dream of Redemption.
I received a copy of this title from the publisher for an honest review. First, although this considered book 7 of the Disgraced Lords series, it easily works as a stand alone unlike the previous books in the series that contained an overarching story. Philip Flagstaff is a younger son who enlisted in the military and found himself fighting in the Napoleonic war, but he never expected his older brother, the Earl of Cumberland, to join the military as well. After his brother sacrifices himself to save him, Philip unexpectedly finds himself earl and dealing (or not dealing) with massive grief over his brother's death. Determined not to have an heir, Philip falls into a relationship with Rose, the widowed Duchess of Roxborough who is determined to be enjoy her freedom and never marry. Two years later, Rose and Philip have fallen into a comfortable relationship and spend as much time together as their lives allow, but Rose no longer wants to avoid marriage. She's fallen for Philip and wants to create a life that consists of more than stolen moments. Rose and Philip have to deal with a mystery surrounding her young son the Duke of Roxoborogh's safety. I liked Rose and found her determination to help Philip overcome his guilt and realize that his brother wouldn't have wanted him to spend his life without love and a family of his own. Philip was likeable and his feelings of guilt were very understandable; I thought Ms. Evans did a good job of not over playing this aspect of the story to the point where I was frustrated with his behavior. I was in a bit of a reading slump when I first started this title, but this book engaged me and I read it in very short order.
For one thing, they already started off with Rose already loving Phillip. Hence there was no love development from Rose.
We only had to wait for Phillip to realize he loved Rose. If only the author had included actual scenes of how Rose fell for Phillip and how they interacted in the past to allow me to believe why Rose fell for him and remained in love with him until today.
Them allowing being together from the beginning took away my joy of actually seeing the romance form or develop.
Secondly, half of the book was spent on just thinking and other things happening and the romance was not focused on. I skimmed soooo many pages.
Thirdly, the chemistry was nothing special. With the author’s lack of explanation how rose fell for Phillip, I could only see the lust between them, and not the love.
Fourthly, phillip’s reason for not wanting to marry was ridiculous. It stuck too long. Robert has been gone for a long time, and i cannot understand why Phillip would hold himself back from rose—the one person who made him happy—just because he thinks he’s the one who should have died instead of Robert.
I haven't read a historical romance for so long, I forgot how much I enjoy reading this genre. I spent half of Sunday indulging myself with this read. This is book #7 in a series but I believe they can all be read as stand alone. I was particularly thrilled to be reading a book written by a New Zealand author too.
Rose Deverall was married off at 18 years old, a mother at 19 and widowed by the time she was 20. Her late husband was a lot older than her, imagine marrying someone as old as your grandfather?! He was a very wealthy man so he has left her in good stead financially and of course she also has a son, who is the apple of her eye.
Now being as young as Rose is now, she doesn't want to be alone for the rest of her life, she wishes to marry again and have more children. There is only one man she wants that with, Philip Flagstaff. He has been her lover the past two years and has a wonderful connection with her son Drake. It is obvious to everyone that Philip adores Rose and their circle of friends are just waiting for a marriage announcement any day now.
Philip is definitely not thinking of marriage to Rose or any woman for that matter. He has no need for a heir and therefore a wife and children will just complicate his life. He definitely has feelings for Rose but he is determined to deny himself the love and happiness he wants but does not deserve. He has imposed this sentence on himself as penance for the death of his late brother. You know how these men can be about their 'sense of duty.'
Philip doesn't want to marry Rose but he doesn't want anyone else to have her either. Rose will not give up on what her heart desires but being a wealthy widow draws attention from other men, some of them do not have good intentions towards her at all. As Rose tries to get to the bottom of the real reason that Philip continues to deny himself a future with her, sinister things are amuck in the ton. People with their own personal agendas are out for themselves and Rose is their target.
Will Philip finally put his head out of his breachered arse and realise that Rose is his future or will he be too late?
What started as an affair between the merry widow, the Duchess Rose Deverill the Earl of Cumberland, Philip Flagstaff ended up as true love. The only thing is that Philip is struggling with the way he came into his earldom and has vowed to never marry. Feeling responsible for his brother Robert's death at Waterloo, Philip has decided to forgo marriage and children as a penance. However when his mistress and the woman he loves and the life of her son are threatened Philip is forced to look at what he is prepared to sacrifice for honour and guilt. A different story that highlights the tug between perceived honour and love.
A Love to Remember is a beautifully written story of redemption and forgiveness. Philip Flagstaff is the new Earl of Cumberland after his brother Robert dies saving Philip from certain death. He carries the guilt with him and vows never to marry and carry on his title but instead hand it down to his younger brother. What saves him is an affair he starts with Rose Deverill. It brings him some solace in his half-life he deems himself to live. What each of them doesn’t realize is that time isn’t on their side when it comes to social obligations. They both need to decide if this affair can be more or will they have to give up the love of their life.
Oh my goodness this was a great story to read. It had intrigue and villains, and of course a grand romance. Philip and Rose may have passionate sex when they can find the time with one another but they also found that special someone that they can confide in trust them completely. Both were in agreement when they started this affair that it was only going to be about sex and nothing more. However over time Rose has changed her mind and wants more children and a marriage to put her n better standing for her young son’s future as a duke. Philip has his reasons for never wanting to marry or have his own children and they amicably separate. They both just didn’t realize how hard it is going to be apart when they are constantly running into each other in the same social circles.
The story is totally engaging and I had a hard time putting it down. It swept me away in how much I could feel their love for one another but couldn’t breech the chasm of letting he love her and marry her. I thought there was a good balance of angst and romance, along with suspense and mystery of who was out to hurt Rose and her son. I haven’t read the other stories in the series so I know it can be read without any confusion, or getting snippets of backstory of the other couples from the earlier books. It did however want me to read them and I plan to do that soon. The author wrote a period piece and showed me how much I love historical romances. I fell in love with Rose and Philip and was so happy that they got their happy ending.
A historical romance of the first water. The heroine is a young widowed Duchess and the hero is a newly minted Earl. He has acquired the title as his older brother, the Earl, was killed while saving his life on the battlefield. The story is lusty and poignant. They love each other but both have an aversion to the commitment of marriage. The burning question is can they find away around the emotional baggage they are carrying in abundance.
I have rated this book 4.25 stars and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys a well written historical romance.
I received an ARC from Netgalley for my unbiased review. Thank you Frank
I LOVED this book, if you have been following the Disgraced Lords series then you already know Philip and Rose and you have probably been wondering why they haven't married. If you haven't read the series, you will still enjoy this book as Philip and Rose have primarily been secondary characters and Ms. Evans give more than enough back story to make this a stand alone title.
The book opens with Philip Flagstaff, the new Earl of Cumberland standing at the grave of his older brother Robert, the previous Earl. Philip is overwhelmed with grief and guilt, he blames himself for his brother's death as Robert sacrificed his own life to save Philip at Waterloo. At that moment, Philip makes a vow, he will never marry or have children, so the earldom he feels he stole from his older brother will go to Thomas, his younger brother. He believes the only way he can honor his brother is by sacrificing his own happiness. As he is standing there he is approached by Rose Deverill, Duchess of Roxborough. Rose has long admired Philip and had secret hopes to one day marry him, but her father sold her into marriage at 18 to a man old enough to be her grandfather. She endured marriage to him and was rewarded with the birth of her son and widowhood on the same day. She has no desire to remarry and has spent the last few years as a "wicked widow", taking lovers and refusing all offers of marriage.
Fast forward two years, Rose and Philip have been exclusive lovers since that day at the graveside, but now Rose wants more. She loves Philip and wants to marry him, her young son adores him and she would love more children, but she is afraid to broach the topic with Philip. For his part, Philip loves Rose and can't imagine a life without her and if not for his vow, he would marry her. So when the topic comes up, Rose is crushed to learn that Philip does not want to marry. She believes that he will marry, but not her. When a misunderstanding at a ball occurs, these two are forced to have the conversation they have both been dreading. Philip again says he will not marry and Rose tells him that she can no longer be his lover, she will remarry for the sake of her son, but if Philip cannot be her husband, she must be free of him so she can move on. Heartbroken, they spend one last night together and part ways.
Over the next few weeks, they dance around each other and each are subjected to jealousy when they are seen with other people. The tension between them is white hot and again Philip asks Rose to reconsider and again she refuses. When her son's guardian learns of their split, he tells Rose it is time for her to remarry and expects her to find a suitable groom by the time her son goes off to school. Rose is still holding out hope that Philip will change his mind and asks Lord Kirkwood to invite him to his house party. He agrees but tells her if Philip does not propose, she must move on and find someone else. Rose knows there will never be anyone else and has a secret that could force Philip to marry her - but that is not what she wants, she wants him to let go of his guilt and choose her.
At the house party Rose decides that she must tell Philip her secret, but when an attempt is made on her son's life and threats are made to her, she doesn't know who she can turn to. She decides that she must leave and returns to London without telling Philip anything. Philip knows that someone is trying to hurt Drake and enlists the Libertine Scholars to help him. He knows he loves Rose and will do anything to protect her - even if that means they must marry. When he learns she left the house party without telling him, he is furious.
He returns to London to confront Rose and tells her they will marry. Rose refuses, she tells him that she loves him, but if he can't choose her over his guilt, they would both be unhappy. Philip does not take this news well and is determined to change her mind. But before he can the villain strikes again. And Philip must decide if being a martyr is worth losing the only woman he has ever and will ever love.
OMG! This book was amazing, it is well written, flows perfectly, has super hot love scenes, a lot of action, a bit of angst, moments when you want to smack the hero, a couple of misunderstandings, cameos by the former Disgraced Lords and their ladies and finally a hard won HEA.
I highly recommend this book, even if you haven't been following the series, this book is not to be missed!!
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to my by NetGalley and the publisher.*
Rose Deverill enjoys being the Wicked Widow, after a forced marriage to an elderly duke, now she’s free to do as she pleases, and she will never marry again, unless Philip Flagstaff, the new Earl of Cumberland, asks her. Oh that Philip would want the same thing, they are so well-matched, their torrid affair doesn’t seem likely to end soon, even though Philip’s never lasted that long before. Rose is under pressure because she could lose her son, who soon will be turning six; it wouldn’t be proper for a future duke to have a very merry widow as a mother, and Rose could be pressured to marry. Rose and Philip have been involved for two years, but Philip will never forgive himself for the death of his beloved and perfect brother, and he wants his younger brother to inherit the title he never wanted, not himself; he feels he is unworthy of the title.
Oh the sublime, incandescent, luminous, impossibly gorgeous prose, the exquisite details, the wonderful dialogues. While the sex scenes were lovely, I got the idea that Rose and Philip were sexually compatible, but were so many pages really necessary, and her loving him, and him being a selfish, unthinking, spineless twit, the pig-headed idiot; I wanted so slap him and kick him in the pants, I wanted to shake her and tell her to forget that coward, that weakling, and get on with her life. Somebody grew a backbone, and it was something to behold, alas but for a fleeting moment.
I was quietly seething throughout most of the book, and it took me longer to read because I had to set it aside because I was so furious at Philip, the spineless coward. I have to admit I don’t do angst very well. Philip obviously needed professional help, which did not exist at the time, and I couldn’t help but wonder if people with his emotional struggles made themselves, and everyone around them, miserable. Then I started speculating if that’s what Ms. Evans had in mind to show us, still it didn’t make it enjoyable for me. I could not love as Rose did, I don’t have the patience or the fortitude for that type of the heartache that was Philip. Ms. Evans’ prose is indescribably gorgeous, as smooth as a rose petal, as delicate as the finest lace. But Philip!
On the other hand, the mystery part was terrific, and I would never have suspected who the villain was. I also wondered it this book was first meant as a novella, because in my opinion, it would have worked better had it been shorter, and maybe have fewer pages of Philip’s “woe is me”. The ending, while nice, felt rushed to me, as Philip had a sudden epiphany; although it was believable, it happened much too quickly. The writing is truly splendid, but Philip!!!
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
Received an ARC for my fair review for netgalley. I have always enjoyed Ms. Evans books, I think the only book that was not for me, was her last one. This one I did enjoy, just not my favorite, and for the period that we were reading on, I was kind of surprised of the heroine, she was pretty promiscuous, but hey it was a story and to each its own. So Rose is a widow now, after being married to an older gentleman she is determined to not ever get married again, the only good thing that came out of that marriage was her son Drake. She has an exclusive fling with her friend Philip. Now Philip has lost his brother who was the heir to the family name, and now he holds the title and he is determined not to ever marry and not to ever have a child, he feels responsible for his brothers death, because if it hadn't been for his brother following him to make sure he stayed alive since he was a screw up, and he jumped in front of him and took the bullet (or whatever they used back then). Of course, Rose changes her mind and wants more, and then chaos reigns, lies, betrayals, jealousies occur. Will the truth come out? Will they figure out that they love each other in time? Well my friends you need to read, I don't want to spoil for you.
I have to admit, the way Bronwen Evans writes, keeps you engaged until the end of the book, but the plot of her books have gotten utterly ridiculous.
The deduction that Rose had towards Phillip was exhausting to read. I mean my goddess, this man has shown you at every corner that he does not love you enough to marry you UNTIL something horrible happened to you that can take you away from him forever and you call that love? like girl, leave that man alone and find someone that actually loves you.
I love how the author wrote Rose. She wasn't a blushing virgin that was obsessed with being virginal, in fact, nobody cared about her escapade except maybe her brother (gross, I know). And I loved that about this book.
I understand Phillip's guilt, but the length he took it to was ridiculous and he hurt many people in the process, especially Rose and her son. I was rooting for Rose to quit him completely and find someone new because even at the end of the book he admitted that he didn't think he would have married her if a series of events didn't happen. And that's just sad. So sad. I would never want a love like this.
All in all, the story kept me engaged all the way through, and the writing was solid and for that, it gets a solid three stars. Especially since the last book in the series was such a disaster, I almost didn't read this one.
This is the seventh Disgraced Lords novel and it is about Rose and Philip, a couple who has been part of the other books as secondary characters who now gets their own story told. Fans of the series know these two quite well, they have quite an unconventional relationship and readers get to find out why it is so. Although I love Rose's character I simply did not like Philip's reasoning on his decision regarding where his relationship with Rose is going. It felt a little bit off compared to how strong and resilient his character overall is, especially glimpses of it in previous books. Also there are some subplots that although quite entertaining and added some suspenseful aspect to the story, really was more to stretching Philip and Rose's estrangement. Still I did enjoy the story but probably not as much as the first few books.
5 Stars! Wow!! I LOVE this book!! I read the whole thing in one sitting!! This is my first time reading a book from this series & now I'm going to have to buy & read the rest!! I really love how Rose isn't the normal 1800's innocent virgin or non-sexual widow!! It's a refreshing change from the usual main female character!! This was a really good book! It's got mystery, suspense, romance, it's got pretty much everything!! It's a well developed story & I felt so bad for Philip & the guilt he felt over his brothers death! I HIGHLY recommend this book! I loved it so much that I'm going to read the other books in the series! If I could give it more than 5 Stars, I would!! *I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!*
A Love to Remember by Bronwen Evans Disgraced Lords #7
Phillips feels unworthy of his Earldom but promises himself to do his brother proud taking up the mantle. In his mind that means never marrying or begetting a child that will be the future Earl. For two years he and Rose, a widowed duchess, have an affair. He holds true to his resolve wanting an affair forever as she begins to want marriage and children – with him. Whether or not the two will end up with a HEA depends on whether or not Phillip will come to his senses and learn to live for himself in joy rather than remain feeling guilty about the death of his brother Robert.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House-Loveswept – this is my honest review
I have to say I was glad to finally get to Phillips story he definitely deserved his own story, I'm definitely enjoying binging this entire series. I look forward to last book in this series, the one thing that I have enjoyed from this entire series is that each character has remained apart of the sideline to help the new characters.
Oh, I loved this book. It’s full of passion, lust and of course two troubled leads. Both don’t want to get married – Rose doesn’t want to remarry and Philip doesn’t want to produce a heir. Both have a backpack from their past they carry around.
Rose was kind of sold to an elderly Duke (Roxborough) before she had a season. A passionless, loveless marriage – thankfully she gave birth to a son within a short period. Plus, thankfully the Duke died quickly after it, so she was an independent widow.
Philip on the other hand was the second son of the Earl of Cumberland, who gambled a lot and lost a lot to risky investments. So one day he decided to join the army against Napoleon but he didn’t buy a commission. His older brother, Robert, followed him and when the enemy was about to kill Philip he went in between them and died – of course Philip blames him for Roberts death, even 6 years later.
Because Rose is Philip’s sister’s best friend they always spent a lot of time together. One day they start an affair. Both know that they don’t want to marry. Two years later they still have an affair and Rose knows that she loves him. The ton knows of their affair, everybody knows of it and each and everybody is waiting for him to offer for her.
Rose knows that her son’s guardian wants to her marry again. And she’d marry Philip if he’d ask her but he never overcame Robert’s death. He tells Rose that he doesn’t need an heir because he has three younger brothers who would inherit the title.

If course there is much more to the storyline. There is a lot of sex, lots of passion and lots of angst – especially in the last third of the book. There is a small “thing” in the end which was kind of predictable for me (and I loved it).
Bronwen Evans again created the perfect little escape for me – I read the book within a day, loved both leads and already knew the background story of some of the other characters because I read several other books of this series (not all so far though).
She has this kind of style that you cannot put the book away and I like it. It’s intriguing. Reading this book is like watching a movie, you can “see” it scene by scene.
I think it’s my 2nd favorite book this year so far!
A Love to Remember ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️written by Bronwen Evans (The Disgraced Lords #7)
Rose Deverill was the widow of the late Duke of Roxborough. She was married off to this elderly man at a very young age and after his death she swore she would never marry again. She was wealthy enough to just take on lovers and live independently. She was perfectly happy being known in the ton as the Wicked Widow". After several years of her escapades, when she attends the funeral of Philip Flagstaff's brother Robert she rekindles her romance with Philip.
Philip as the second son now becomes the Earl of Cumberland and feels he is so undeserving of the title. Also, he feel responsible for his brothers death since his entering the army caused his brother to enter as well and died protecting him in battle. Upon Robert's death Philip promised to never marry and have children. When Philip begins his romance with Rose they are both in agreement of no marriage just to enjoy each other's company.
Miss Evans certainly writes some scorching romance scenes and you could certainly see this romance proceeding to the next level of marriage. They are each other's confidants in almost everything. Both parties care deeply for one another this is where I grew a bit frustrated with Philip. I did feel he definitely knew Rose wanted to marry and he professed his undying feelings but no marriage. I believe as a reader we understood his conflicts and life can't always have a HEA but Philip just got on my nerves.
I will certainly remain a great fan of this series but I have to say this one Lord I did not care for his indecisiveness. He was a waffler. He wanted his cake and eat it. He was to me the weak link in this disgraced lord series.
All that being said, I gave this a five star review because this author was able to certainly get a rise out of my emotions during this read. She is at the top of her game. I received this book from Netgalley for and honest review.
You know you’re in for a treat when you’re already in love with the characters and you haven’t even gotten past the prologue! What a beautiful story of two people who thought they’d never love finding love in each other. Philip Flagstaff, Earl of Cumberland, never wanted the title. Especially after receiving it following the death of his elder brother. A death Philip was responsible for. As atonement, Philip vows never to marry. The inheritance would pass to his younger brothers. Never a child of his own. He would not profit from his selfishness. That would be a life he didn’t deserve. Rose Deverill, widow of the Duke of Rosborough vows never to marry again as well. The only good that came from her horrid arranged marriage was her son Drake. Now she’s known as the Wicked Widow, thanks to a stream of steady, brief affairs. And she’s content with that life until her affair with Philip turns into something she never wants to end. Another wonderful addition to the Disgraced Lords series. I’ll jump at any chance to see the lords and I was thrilled to visit with them again. I’ve been captivated by this series from the start. Passion, betrayal, and intrigue all flawlessly woven together into a story that makes you believe in lasting and enduring love.
A LOVE TO REMEMBER, is a unpredictable, captivating and intriguing tale of love, respect, danger, betrayal and what I'd call "survival guilt". Once again, Ms. Evans brings her readers a complex, masterfully written story with engaging, realistic and believable characters. I was glued to the story from the first page to the very end. And the story lingered long after the last page. Bronwen Evans is one of my favorite Historical Romance authors. She always holds my attention and my heart with her capable writing skills. Bravo!!
