I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review

Risking Ruin by Mae Wood was a great, fun read and it was one of the books that got me out of my reading slump. The characters have real personality and this isn't just one of those books where the main character can't love her man because reasons. There is a real worry in their relationship and it avoids all of the major pitfalls of modern romance novels.

Marisa is a strong woman who stands on her own two feet, running her law firm, and being very good at it.

She loves her job and loves being the boss but when her biggest client's representative retires, she finds her world shaken up. Marisa strives to be professional and respected, keeping her clients at an appropriate distance. It's amazing how one man can change all of that.

Trip Brannon is one hell of a man, after all, and he is hard to put in the box that the rest of her clients reside in. He won't let her put him in that box and he is not shy about his affections. Marisa sees him as an entitled playboy with no real focus in life. He seems to drift around and the only reason he is working at his new position is that he will one day inherit the company.

Trip isn't some aggressive dominant alpha male, which was awesome. Don't get me wrong, I love my cavemen but it was refreshing to encounter a male lead who isn't shoving his love interest up against the wall and claiming her as his property. He is respectful and charming like all properly raised Southern men should be. He is a gentleman with a naughty side. He is the man you take home to meet your mother and grandmother who will stay after to help you with the dishes. He is your dinner party guest. He is your plus one at your friend's wedding. Trip is the gentleman in the streets but a freak in the sheets.

Do you know how rare that is? Yes, Southern men have a reputation for all of this but for them to actually achieve this is beyond rare. He isn't a perfect man but he is genuine and that's what makes him a compelling character.

I know this is a weird thing to fixate on, but I have to mention it. In so many books, especially romance novels, the main characters are fit beyond imagination but you never actually witness them maintaining their shape. I loved that both Marisa and Trip were active. You want to stay healthy? Good. Work for it.

Marisa is a runner. Trip is a cyclist. Thank you, Mae Wood, for making realistic characters that know the meaning of hard work and the benefits of staying active. They aren't staying in shape by shagging all hours of the night and that's wonderful. Nobody just *gets* a six pack. Those are earned.

But onto the story, now that I've gone on about the characters.

Being a lawyer is tough and it can only be made tougher by having a ridiculously hot client. Client/Lawyer relationships are off limits though and Marisa doesn't want to lose a client over a pretty face. There is real danger here to her career. What would the professional world think about her dropping a multi-million dollar client just so she can go at it with the CEO's son? It could potentially ruin her. Especially with the case she is dealing with.

The company has been hit with a string of sexual harassment cases over the past few months and with a big company, that's not all that uncommon. What is strange is the man who is the latest of being accused. Sure, he's a bit of a flirt but nothing as extreme as the case is alleging. Marisa's radar is up and with the help of her assistant, she finds out that this case is a lot bigger than she imagined.

I loved that Marisa didn't do everything on her own. She asks for help from her friends and family and gets it. She knows that she isn't all powerful and she can't do it all so she relies on others. This isn't a rogue lawyer that don't need no stinking assistance. This is a big deal and she is overwhelmingly professional. There was more to this book than just romance and I was just as eager to find out about the lawsuits as I was to learn more about Trip and Marisa.

Their relationship, while it seems a bit like insta-love at the beginning, takes some time to develop. Trip is definitely the pursuer but Marisa doesn't let him push her around. He gives her the space she needs to think it over but he also doesn't let her forget him. Trip makes sure that he is at the front of her mind and is very successful at it. I loved the restaurant scenes. So incredibly hot. I'd be freaking out if my man did that to me and nowhere near as composed as Marisa was. I mean, hot damn.

I even liked the fights that the characters had. They are incredibly realistic. I can see how some people would think Marisa is overreacting in some situations but you know what? I'd probably do the same thing. I'd react the exact same way except probably hold onto my anger for longer. Marisa has the right to be upset and confused in these situations and Trip doesn't just get out scot free.

So overall, a good romantic story and well written as well! The characters are realistic and you find yourself cheering for them.

There are emotions, conflict, attraction, lust (definitely) and consequences. There is a real story to go with a charming romance and I loved that it was set in Memphis which can be a fun city. The landmarks and descriptions were great and I could definitely picture myself there although I was somewhat disappointed that there was no mention of Central Barbecue. I mean...come on. That place is effing magical. And Gus's. Those two are just as iconic as the Rendezvous.

Oh I do like a lady who can pull apart a corporate conspiracy, seduce the town playboy, and still make time to pound the sidewalk daily in her pink Lululemon running gear.

Risking Ruin has one of the strongest characters I’m yet to meet in this genre. Marisa Tanner is smart, funny and just fallible enough to be instantly likeable. Her love interest Trip is everything you want him to be: kind without being dull, smooth without being sleazy, and smart... but not quite as smart as our girl Marisa.

But the thing I really love about this book is the fact that we get so many details as the story unfolds. Trip and Marisa eat well, they dress well, and they (ahem) drink well. As I powered through the pages, I found myself wanting very much to try their she-crab soup, their dry-rub ribs, and the recurrent bourbon-laced pecan pie. I wanted Marisa’s shoes. I wanted an entirely new lingerie collection. And hot damn, did I want to drink a pale ale.

The other thing I love is that Wood doesn’t talk down to her reader. The narrative doesn’t necessarily require that you know the first thing about employment law. And we could just as easily get by without delving into the technicalities. But again, Wood doesn’t spare her reader the details, and in doing so, she makes Marisa all the more credible — and all the more kick ass.

I’m so glad that we’re going to be seeing more of these characters in a sequel!

OK.... I seriously hate giving a DNF on a copy of a book I was gifted in order to review.. especially when I think the author does have a lot of potential.. this one is just not doing it for me as of about 50% in. It could just be a "me" thing and I may very well go back and try it again later.. but I've started skimming and in order to give a full honest review I would need to really know what I'm writing about. I've lost interest. Bummer. I think the book does have the recipe for something really cute.. lawyers.. office romance that's against the rules.. but for me, right now.. it's a DNF. Don't let my DNF though keep you from trying this one out.. I think a good many readers could probably get into this one. Just wasn't my cuppa right now...

A new and refreshing lawyers love story!!!

Marissa was a very good lawyer and working for Branco was very good for her portfolio. When Marissa is faced to be working with a new General Counsel she didn't have any idea how her life was going to change. Working with Trip Brannon was not something that Marissa imaged, she knew she was in trouble when she took one look at those gorgeous eyes.

She didn't want to get involved with Trip for two major reasons. One he was her client that could have jeopardized her job and lose her license, and the second reason was she had her shared of heartbreak and she was not wanting to put herself in that predicament again.

Trip was the heir of Branco. a huge company that owned half of Memphis Tennessee. When he was introduced to Marissa he knew he had to do anything in his power to get to know her. Having a secret crushed on her for a while he knew exactly what he needed to do.

Marissa will try to stay away from Trip but she didn't seem to have any luck on that. Besides he was making it impossible for her to resist his charm.

Could Marissa and Trip find a way to be together and most important can she believe him how he feels about her?

I loved this book, the story was refreshing, funny, and steamy. I found myself reading in one sitting, couldn't put the book down until I finished it.

I recommend this book, you will not be disappointed.

Ah, I do love a good ‘professional falling in love with their client and having to work around it’ romance novel. Marisa is a Memphis lawyer specialising in sexual harassment lawsuits, and her most important client is one of the biggest companies in town, Branco. Trip Brannon’s the playboy son of Branco’s CEO, a rich kid who’s never been able to stick with one thing – whether it be women or business ventures – for very long. When Branco’s general counsel – and Marisa’s mentor – is accused of sexual harassment and forced into retirement, Trip takes over. Which annoys Marisa, both because she’s worried he’s not up to the job, which will make her job harder, and, well, she’s kind of attracted to him. And relationships between lawyers and clients are a strict no-no.

Marisa is a fun, likeable heroine. She’s good at her job, and not so fussed about the fact she hasn’t found a man who wants to stick around for good yet. Sometimes I find strong, independent romance novel heroines too intense, but Marisa was just right on the I love my job and don’t need a man! front. Her parents make a few funny appearances, and I loved her friend Erica too – I can’t get enough well-written girl talk. As for Trip, well, he’s pretty swoon-worthy. He’s not just the playboy Marisa originally takes him to be, and they actually have more in common than she thought. He’s actually pretty perfect, apart from the whole working for her biggest client and a relationship being against the rules thing. The way they work around it is both cute and hot (what actually defines a “sexual” relationship, hmm?). In addition to the romance plot, there’s an interesting little mystery subplot as Marisa and Trip try to figure out the strange connection between the seven or eight sexual harassment suits that have been brought against Branco. I found the resolutions to both the mystery and the relationship problem a little rushed, but the rest of the book was so strong that it didn’t diminish my enjoyment of the book as a whole.

Independent and career driven attorney, Marisa Tanner has everything going for her. She's smart, sexy, financially secure and at the top of her field thanks in part to her leading client, Branco. Love isn't a priority and relationships with clients are a definite no-no, but she can't seem to fight the chemistry with Branco's prodigal son, Trip Brannon. Portrayed as a carefree playboy, Trip isn't at all what Marissa initially believes and soon the two find themselves in a forbidden affair.

For me, Risking Ruin was all about the small details. Wood has a knack for crafting scenes that literally take you there. From artwork, wardrobe, and the sites of Memphis, I had a perfect envision of each scene as they unfolded. Her characters are well developed, fun, and flirty. Add that in with just enough steamy parts to keep things interesting and you'll find yourself immersed until the very end.

A fun, well paced story of family, friendships and love, Risking Ruin is a perfect mixture of chick-lit and romance.

My Thoughts:
I received an ARC from the author in exchange of an honest review.
Risking Ruin is the 1st book in this series and it glued my attention for Mae Wood. Even thou the story is narrate and I have to admit I don’t like to read books like that but Mae did an excellent job with a well written story.
Marisa is lead on this story and she is that independent woman with a huge and important job, she’s the best dealing with harassment allegations. She’s that kind of woman that follow every rule but somehow she find herself in with troubles when Trip gets in her map and now is flirting with her, even thou she really but really wants him she has to avoid him because he is her most important client and clients are off limits or she will lose everything her dream job, her license and her multi-billion dollar client.

2.5* it’s probably just me but I did not like Marisa. Professionally, she may have been competant lawyer but she acted much younger than how a 35 yo would act.

Okay, this book has inspired me and I'm seriously thinking of going to law school!! Yup I've already double majored in business but if I can get a Trip by becoming a lawyer, I'm in!

We have Marissa who is the lawyer for Branco and she's just been informed that Branco is getting a new general counsel. What she didn't know what that general council looks like he just walked right off the pages of GQ and is the owner's son to boot!! Trip and Marissa have eyes for each other from the beginning and it's an instant attraction! I loved that about this book!

Marissa and Trip embark of a journey of cat & mouse because we all know it is a big No-No to sleep with a client!! Well...oops there was this super romantic dinner with lots of wine, we mustn't forget that Trip is a charming GQ walk off either....and that line got crossed in a drunken stupor. When Marissa wakes up the next morning there is a whole chapter "We aren't going there again!" which I liked that resistance. What follows is a series of seriously steamy, passionate non-sex encounters. But still no happily ever after in sight since we have two career driven individuals that aren't leaving those said careers anytime soon. The solution a permission slip.... Yup seriously!

And of course while Marissa and Trip are working on their love life. They also uncover a plot against Branco, work multiple legal files, run a huge business and squeeze in a triathlon and some run time! (Lululemon running gear, whoop!)

The end of this book was awesome! Not what I was expecting and I'm hoping there is some sort of sequel because I am not just done with Marissa and Trip. I would love to see more of them in the future!

This book came with a great & diverse cast of characters that gave you some really funny laugh out loud moments when they interacted with the main players. The sex scenes while passionate are not super detailed and they are few and far between. And there is NO cliffhanger.

This is a fantastic debut novel and I'm looking forward to more work from Mae!

Steamy. Wow. I know I’ve said I’m not real fussed on sex scenes, but I love playful teasing, and this book had plenty of it.
Of course, those who like their steamy sexy romances will find plenty to like here.
I wasn’t real sure how I’d feel about a lawyer falling in love with her client, and thankfully, neither did the characters! This made everything believable and palatable, as the heroine and hero approached their conundrum with as much common-sense as they could manage. They tried keeping their hands of each other, they really did...
While the romance was first and foremost, I really enjoyed the court case storyline too, which made me a little disappointed when it wasn’t resolved as much as I would’ve like, but that’s life and court cases are complicated (or so I imagine).
Other little subplots and supporting characters also shone through to create a solid foundation for this thoroughly enjoying story. I loved the best friend and her family, and I loved the main characters’ families and all their friends. The world created was believable, with many people living their lives.
Part chic-lit, part steamy romance, this book will tick a lot of people’s boxes. An easy, comfortable read for romance-lovers wanting to curl up with a good book.
I was given a mobi copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

In the interest of full disclosure, I do know the author. That said, this was a really fun read! I'm not really a romance novel reader, but the story of Trip and Marisa sucked me in. Halfway through the book, even I was really rooting for them as a couple.

This book is well written, with nicely developed characters who are believable together. The pacing was good, and it was an interesting insight into a less-publicly-known corner of the legal profession. Actually, that was the best thing about the book: there was a fully developed, interesting plot that had nothing to do with the romance. While romantic tension is good (and this book had that), it's even better to see the characters interacting in a fully fleshed out world, and responding to non-romantic situations in ways that forward their growing relationship.

Highly recommend to any and all romance novel readers!

This book was a great sit down read. I loved the characters, Marisa and Trip. They were engaging, witty, and amusing.

The dialogue really made this book. Their entertaining and glib banter carried the storyline and left me eager for the next book, if only to continue with their interactions.

The legal knowledge woven throughout the book was fascinating, and Mae Wood did an excellent job of engaging my interest in the ins and outs of Marisa’s job without bogging the story down with technical terms. The subplots were amazing, and I commend Wood’s superb writing skills for bringing the world of law to life in such an appealing manner.

This book had me smiling from beginning to end, and I am most assuredly looking forward to reading book 2 and continuing to delve into the lives of Marisa and Trip.

Perfectly Ruined

4.25 Mae Wood is a new author to me. I have been recommended to read her books by a fellow author and other readers. I was pleasantly surprised !

This book is written in third person which I did not know. Not that I don't enjoy third person POV, but rarely can some authors can execute. Ms. Wood is truly the exception.

Some may have issues with attorney and client hooking up, but it does happen in the real world. The heart wants what the heart wants. Remember people, this is fiction, but Ms. wood handled it well and in proper manner.

You will fall in love with Trip. I loved Marissa's sassiness although at times can get into her own head, but she eventually came around.

If you're looking for a new author, Ms. Wood is a great person to start with, her writing is witty and strong with the perfect amount of sexy.

Risking Ruin was a fun and easy read.

After reading the blurb I thought I was in for a nice chick lit with some hot sex scenes but I had to change my mind because the plot was so much more intricate than that.

I've really enjoyed this story full of smart and funny characters.
Marisa and Trip's relationship is really intriguing, their banters are so funny you cannot not get attached to them and cheer for their happy ending.

Thanks to the author's descriptive skills the reader can easily picture the characters and the places.
I'd like to go to Memphis and try every single restaurants mentioned in this book...Pig & Barley would be my first stop.

I'm off reading the second novel in the series.

This was a fun romance novel. The main characters were believable and I liked them. Marisa is smart and driven, but not totally consumed by her work. Her best friend Erica was great! Their funny and honest conversations were like how I talk with my friends. And Trip, ah, Trip. He's hot. He's just dreamy.

The chemistry between Trip and Marisa is hot. This what I'd consider a very steamy romance. But he also really seems to like her, which was fun. The tone is like chick-lit.

I like these characters. I liked their story.

This was a surprise and a great chick-lit read perfect for summer reading.
It flowed really well and I enjoyed finding out about the characters, Marisa is a career woman and has had her fair share of relationship disasters. Trip is a business man who's making his own way even though he his also wealthy due to his parents. He wants more but often gets trapped in his playboy status.
Marisa and Trips paths cross because Trip wants them too, so he makes it happen..... then it's a waiting game to see if they can both get what they want, love and happiness.
A great debut by Mae Wood

OMG he was so sweet and thoughtful and HOT he's basically a mythical creature! I really liked them together and I was rooting for them the whole time so I'm very happy with how it turned out! I definitely recommend this book! I only wish I found out how the lawsuit ended!

I really enjoyed Mae Wood's debut book!
Exceptionally well written, it is filled with humorous dialogue, witty banter and a dash of intrigue.
The narrative is detailed but without talking down to the reader, meaning even someone like me, who knows nothing about employment law, feels a little more knowledgeable and a little more kickarse!

Looking forward to book 2!

I loved Risking Ruin!! It is a bit of a taboo office romance with fun, witty and sexy banter sprinkled in! Lawyer Marisa is immediately drawn to the new general council for her biggest client, and Trip happens to be the boss’s son. This author writes the absolute sexiest ‘not-sex’ scenes that ever sent my e-reader into overheat!

“So, when you said you didn’t have sex with him twice, you mean that you guys fooled around, but didn’t ‘go all the way’ as the cool kids in the cafeteria call it?”

The story seems at first like a fun light RomCom, but it’s not long before my emotions are fully invested in Trip and Marisa’s dilemma. Marisa really tries to push back against the pull she feels but their chemistry is a real thing and probably visible to everyone around them.

“You’re going to drive me nuts. Why can’t you just be some other guy and why can’t I just be some other girl? Why does this have to be so complicated? Why did you have to say ‘girlfriend’? Why do I have to like you so much?”

The cases that Trip and Marisa are working on together add a little mystery and suspense as they dig to find out what is behind a rash of sexual harassment cases against Banco, Trip’s family company.

Although this is a standalone story with a complete ending, it definitely left me wanting more of Trip and Marisa, and I can’t wait to dive into Borrowing Trouble.

ARC received from the author in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 - 3.75 STAR

Risking Ruin is a book reminiscent of Julie James whom I love. And just like JJ, Mae Wood is a lawyer herself and this was seen throughout the book – all the job aspects were well documented/ researched and that is something I appreciate in my books.

The book follows Marisa Tanner, a Memphis lawyer for the rich. She’s one of the best there are at her job and one of her most prolific clients is the Brannon Company – they are a magnet for sexual harassment cases, the latest involving her mentor John, who just so happens to be General Counsel at Branco. And this is why John is forced in taking an early retirement and Marisa is introduced to the company’s new General Counsel who just so happens to be the boss’s son, Trip Brannon.

Both Marisa and Trip are wonderful characters; Marisa is an independent woman, who has set her sights at being the best at everything she’s doing and for her failure is not an option. She has never broken an oath till she had met Trip. She knows their ‘office romance’ is forbidden, but she can’t deny her feelings. And it’s definitely hard to say no to someone like Trip. He’s an incredible man; he understands her struggle and promises to behave – which he does – their non-sex is some of the best I’ve read. He’s always there when she needs him and she does the same for him. Their relationship is based on mutual respect and I loved that. The interactions between the protagonists were wonderful – they’re sweet, fun and sensual when needed, and cordial and respectful when the job calls.

I have to take a minute and talk about the secondary characters – they did make the book interesting – seeing Marisa behavior outside of work was interesting – the banter with her BFF and parents made me love her even more. The same goes for Trip as well – although we don’t get his POV, we get to meet his best friends and we get a little insight on how those guys nights out might work.

Apart from the romance aspect, the book has a bit of a suspense/intrigue element. Did John or didn’t he commit everything he’s accused of. I liked reading about that, but I wish I it was even more developed. Although well researched it felt a bit rushed.

I did enjoy this story very much but I do have some of problems with it. Mae Wood did a great job at catching my interest and making me like the characters, but there were several parts that I felt I could do without – the food/drink/clothes descriptions and the brand name dropping just felt to overtake certain paragraphs of the book and at times I had to remind myself not to skim them.

All in all, this is a GREAT debut novel – my rating would be at around a 3.75 stars – it’s fun and witty, it has amazing protagonists and an interesting plot. I’m very excited to read the follow up to Marisa and Trip’s story in Borrowing Trouble and see where Mae Wood will take this story next.

**review by Andra at Connected by books**

Risking Ruin is a witty, well written and engaging book. I really enjoyed many aspects of the story and it maintained my interest enough to keep me reading, although I will admit to struggling a little during the middle section of the book.
I liked both the H and h and found the inclusion of the daily workings of an employment lawyer really interesting.

My rating would be 3.5 stars. I wanted a little more intrigue/plot and fewer descriptions of foods/drinks/shoes/branded goods etc. Some readers may like the inclusion of these details but I’m all about story and this distracted me from it. A really promising debut and I look forward to reading more in book 2 – Borrowing Trouble.

Who doesn’t a love a steamy story about an honest professional falling in love with their client who they can’t keep their hands off; it’s a clichéd story I’ve read many a time but it doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy this romance novel. Marisa is a Memphis lawyer who specialises in sexual harassment lawsuits. One of her biggest and most esteemed clients is a company called Branco. However when Branco’s counsel are accused of harassment and forced to retire it is down to Trip Brannon, the son of the CEO to step in and take the reins. However he’s a bit of a loose cannon who can’t seem to keep himself occupied with one woman let alone one business venture. Marisa is terrified that he’s is not up to the job, putting significant pressure on her as a proffesional, but she’s also rather attracted to him and as we all know; a relationship between lawyer and client is a strict no,

In terms of characterisation Marisa is a fun and very likeable female character; she’s not worried that she hasn’t yet found Mr Right so to speak and she’s focussed and actually rather good at her job. She’s not so independent that she comes across cold and unyielding which strong female characters do have the habit of becoming. I loved the little snippets from her parents that add a humorous tone and I cannot help but love a good girly best-friend relationship. Erica and Marisa’s friendship is honest, girly and rather darling. The chatter between the two is comical and I liked the space it gave to the main plot. Trip, is pretty hot and heavy (and rather intense) however there’s more to him than first meets the eye and when you take a step back and look at the two characters you see they have a lot more in common than at first thought. The build-up of their relationship is handled well and although we can all see where this is going, right, I still enjoyed the constant will they won’t they of their relationship. Also, I really enjoyed the mystery subplot that Trip and Marisa try and figure out as to whether the sexual harassment suits are connected and it meant that I was pretty hooked throughout!

In terms of negatives, the ending is a little rushed, it’s a shame because all the way through the build-up is perfectly handled and yet at the end it all suddenly pulls together a little too quickly. When I’m reading a book that is obviously assembling a big finale I don’t want to feel cheated out of the excitement to find out if it is all going to be okay in the end. I guess the only other negative is it is a little clichéd in terms of plotline don’t expect anything too out of the ordinary but it’s okay here because of the maintained plot line regarding the sexual harassments. In terms of writing style it moves with pace and despite being quite a short book in terms of length, the descriptions are full bodied and made the fictional world feel real.

Overall I really enjoyed this book, it works great as a standalone book but I hear that there will be a continuation of the story which I do look forward to reading. The characters are nicely developed; the storyline does have a few interesting legal insights which made it feel a lot more believable. This would be the perfect summer beach read; not too taxing but a lovely story all the same!

I loved the smart writing style of this story. It’s intelligent, realistic, and will warm your blood. Marisa is smart and very good at her job. She has had a couple of failed serious relationships, but has not closed herself off or built walls around her heart. However, she is a tough one to deal with, her ethics are important to her and her job. She is an excellent role model. I found her easy to like and cheer for. Her lawyer face is straight-forward no games, however her personal life is an open book. What you see is what you get. You can tell by her friends and her parents.

Trip Brannon took some time to get to know though. What Marisa first sees is a trust-fund, immature adult who will eventually take over when his father retires. She has a lot to learn about him and does as Ms. Wood smartly doles out information about this complicated man. I enjoyed the whole process of getting to know him.

The plot of the story includes several legal cases of sexual harassment brought against the family-owned Brannon Company that have been filed in the last several months. It is Marisa’s job to find out if there is an unseen commonality between these cases. She also needs to work out a business relationship with Trip Brannon, who she finds irresistibly charming, good-looking, and it muddles her brain functions when she looks into his blue eyes.

As I said before this is an intelligently written story and the author’s debut novel. I cannot stress enough that if an author sends a copy of their book to be reviewed they need to make sure that the reviewer has the latest copy of the file to review. I am afraid I had to take away a star for editing and proofreading issues. I do believe this is a good enough novel that it deserves another round of professional copyediting and proofreading. I enjoyed reading it and didn’t realize there is now a sequel to follow. I do believe Mae Wood will be an interesting author to follow.

FYI: Risking Ruin is the first book in the Give Me Memphis series, however it can be read as a stand-alone without feeling as though you've been left hanging. There are several adult scenes that may not be appropriate for some audiences. I enjoyed those particular scenes, I didn’t see them as gratuitous but they were graphic. **Originally written for "BigAl’s Books and Pals" book blog. Marisa Tanner works as a successful lawyer in Memphis and her speciality is handling sexual harassment cases. One of her biggest clients, family-owned company Branco, suddenly finds itself dealing with several sexual harassment lawsuits at the same time which means Marisa has her work cut out for her. Branco’s general counsel is one of the accused and is forced to retire. As soon as Marisa meets his replacement, Trip Branson, sparks fly between the two of them. Yet, Trip is known as a playboy and Marisa knows she shouldn’t get involved with a client. When Trip makes clear he is definitely interested in Marisa, things start to get tricky and Marisa finds it more and more difficult to ignore the obvious chemistry between them. But is she willing to risk everything for a guy?

I really enjoyed this novel. The storyline is not a particularly original one (a professional develops feelings for a client, someone they shouldn't fall for) but it has been executed well and author Mae Wood has definitely given it her own twist. I instantly liked the characters, particularly main protagonist Marisa. She's the prototype of a strong, passionate and independent woman who has build a great career for herself, but as readers we also get to see her more vulnerable side. She is a bit distant, especially when it comes to men, which is all connected to when she discovered her ex-boyfriend cheating on her. I enjoyed seeing these different sides of Marisa and how she struggles to overcome these issues as the story progresses.

Other characters, such as handsome business man Trip and Marisa's best friend Erica, are also well-develooped and really added something to the story. The novel not only deals with a romance story, but also focuses on the sexual harassment lawsuits and how Marisa needs to find a way to solve things. I really enjoyed both these storylines and combined they made for a thoroughly enjoyable read. Overall, 'Risking Ruin' is an entertaining contemporary romance novel with great chemistry between the main characters. A promising debut!

Mae Wood is a talented author, and I enjoyed this novel. It's a hot contemporary romance, and the sex scenes are scorching and inventive. The hero and heroine are fully developed with a ton of chemistry.

The plot, which primarily revolves around Marisa's work on a rash of sexual harassment lawsuits plaguing Trip's company, is also interesting - especially when the possibility of a conspiracy is raised. The romance storyline is well integrated into this element of intrigue. Complicating matters is the fact that with Trip as her client, Marisa is duty bound to avoid a sexual relationship with him, so they find a variety of interesting things they can do that are officially "not sex."

One thing I found a bit off-putting is the drinking that happens early in the novel. It seemed excessive to me, and made me question the professionalism of the characters. Fortunately, this doesn't continue throughout the rest of the novel.

I would have liked to have seen more actual peril surrounding the romantic relationship between the characters. Yes, Marisa could have lost everything if the affair was discovered, but I never felt like the worst was going to happen. This lack of tension in the plot, though, is offset by the high level of tension between the characters.

Overall, this is an enjoyable read. I received this book in return for an honest review, and I'm so glad I did!

In my opinion, Mae Wood is certainly an author to be on the lookout for! I thoroughly enjoyed this book! Anytime I had a chance to read, I was doing it!

The characters are well written. Marisa is a strong independent woman who also happens to be a kick ass lawyer. She's most definitely the girl you always wanted to be. Trip is a former playboy who is set to eventually take over his family's company. He the guy you always wanted to be with. Together they have to work through malicious lawsuits against his family's company while also trying to figure out how to fight their attraction to one another.

One of the things that I liked about this book was how easy it was to read. There's no high tech lawyer talk, the story flowed well, and there's just enough scandal to add to that little bit of mystery. And did I mention that it definitely has its funny parts?

I can't wait for the next book to come out! It's sure to be a hit! Excellent job Mae!

What a great debut novel by Mae Wood!! I love a confident protagonist, and Marisa was just that. The characters had depth and the story was believable. I had no trouble at all getting lost in the fictional world that Wood created, in fact, I looked forward to picking it up every night before I went to bed until I finished it.

I only have one teeny tiny complaint – the way that Marisa takes her coffee – milky white. I’m fine with this, I love coffee myself, but the words “milky white” where just mentioned a few too many times.

Other than that it was seriously a great read. Fantastic job Ms. Wood!

My Rating: 4 stars

Mae Wood writes a witty tale about the delicate path professionals make when dealing with matters of business intertwined with matters of the heart. Marisa and Trip find themselves in a tight situation and play a nice game of chess maneuvering through the paces of life's little messy situations. The sub characters only add to Wood's talented way with words and brings to life the extraordinary worlds of personal and professional life torn with moral and ethical decisions due in part to the modern day HR proper conduct issues! Wood's ties in the legal ramifications beautifully with humor, fun, and sexy times making the read light and refreshing.

Risking Ruin is sexy and funny with a hint of suspense. I love Marisa and Trip's chemistry from their first encounter. I appreciate Marisa's personality and pride in her career, Trip's respect for her boundaries, and their mutual willingness to cautiously push limits throughout the book. I also enjoyed the scenic descriptions of Memphis and other elements of the South. They gift readers with a great visual of the characters' settings. And as great as all of those parts of the story were (and they were!), my favorite part was Pig & Barley, the modern but rustic restaurant with a great beer selection and fantastic food. I wish it was real, because I'd be making a road trip!

Risking Ruin definitely had potential but unfortunately I only got to about 30% before I found myself getting bored and I ended up skimming the rest. Since I was gifted a copy I might try to pick it up and read it more thoroughly at a later date but as of right now it just didn't hold my interest.
