This is a collection of stories, a libretto, essays and sketches about knife-fights, a stone sphinx in Paris, a painter in Venice, an opera libretto which re-invents Miranda and Caliban and essays that discuss, among other things, fairy tales and Russell Hoban's own childhood in America.
Russell Conwell Hoban was an American expatriate writer. His works span many genres, including fantasy, science fiction, mainstream fiction, magical realism, poetry, and children's books. He lived in London, England, from 1969 until his death. (Wikipedia)
I'm a great fan of Russell Hoban but I can imagine why others are not as he writes very peculiar books in a peculiar and imaginative way. This book I think tries to explain why he wrote the way he did and tells you more about the man himself which is fascinating to me. One section he mentions that he wrote lots of childrens books first to put him in a position so he could write the adult books he really wanted to write realising that not many people would want to read them. I for one enjoyed them all, some more than others admittedly but none of them were ever dull but they are a tad bonkers. This book is a must for all true Russell Hoban fans.
