It's 1993 in the pristine coastal community of Malibu, CA., and fourteen year-old Neely Evans is coming of age, like it or not. A Tennessee transplant, she ends up in California when her father lands a job at a top law firm.

Neely fills her time painting seascapes, still life art, and combing the beach for her next perfect picture. And then, the boy down the beach enters her life, and she will never be the same.

Seth Drake, a year older than Neely, takes her under his wing. He enjoys hanging with her and they are soon inseparable. As they grow close, their friendship gives way to something more. But before the teens can fully revel in their budding romance, Neely's life is ripped apart. Her father's infidelity is made public, and her mother is determined to seek vengeance by using Neely as her weapon. She takes Neely and moves back to Tennessee.

Months later, when Neely returns to visit her father, she finds that Seth has matured in ways she'd never imagined. Neely isn't sure if she's ready to take the next step in their relationship. In the end, Neely makes a decision she may live to regret.

This first installment in the Evermore Series is bittersweet; complete with first love, first heartbreak, a family forever fractured by infidelity, and a teenager that becomes the primary caregiver for her mentally unstable mother. But Neely has strength that sometimes surprises even her. She learns how to cope - any way she can.

I was given this book in Audible form by the Author for an honest review.

What a beautiful surprise this book was for me. The story line is unique and the main characters, are sweet! Beautiful Neely is 14 and from Tennessee, her father landed a position at a very prosperous law firm. Her friend Seth is 15 and likes her. They start to hang out and soon they become boyfriend and girlfriend. She loves painting and art, he has plan on becoming an actor, like his parents.

Their love is so sweet and innocent, until one day she is suddenly yanked fromher life in California and goes back with her mother to Tennessee.

This book is the beginning of this beautiful series and I really enjoyed listening to it! Now, next to Book 2 then 3!!

Heart Crushed

I'm generally not a fan of jumping back and forth in time. It was hard to keep track of the time period on occasion but on the whole, I liked the first installment of this series.

"I love you, Seth Drake," I whispered before turning away from him. "And I'm gonna miss you like crazy."
-- Neilah Grace "Neely" Evans

It's heartbreaking in so many ways - an unstable, alcoholic mother, a philandering father, and a young girl's coming of age that she wants to experience walking side-by-side with the boy next door. Then reality sets in as her family situation blows up and Neely is separated from Seth. Simply heartbreaking.

UPDATED 10/2022:
I listened to this a couple of years ago and originally gave it only three stars. I did increase my rating with my second time through. It really stuck with me these past couple of years and is worthy of an increase.

I received an author's copy of the audio book. I enjoyed the narrator, Rachelle Williams, and her southern twang.

Crushed & Claimed (Evermore Series 1 & 2) by Andrea Smith
4 stars!!!

“I care about Seth. I wouldn’t do anything to screw up his life, no matter how bad mine is right now.”

Crushed and Claimed are the first two books in a four-part series and are novella in size. Both these books were quick reads for me, especially as I was drawn into the story from the get go and couldn’t turn the pages quick enough to see what life had in store for Neely Evans. This series is a coming of age story and follows Neely from teenager to adulthood.

Crushed starts as Neely’s life is uprooted and she has to move from her roots in Tennessee to California for her father’s job. Her father is a lawyer and is now specialising in Entertainment so he has to go to where the actors and actresses are, so Malibu it was. Neely feels incredibly out of place, from Tennessee to Malibu is a culture shock and she struggles to fit in, yet once she makes a friend, Malibu doesn’t seem that bad after all.

“As beautiful and golden as California was – and is, I ached for the rolling hills, lazy creeks, and dirt roads of Tennessee. I felt like I would never fit in here. But I did.”

Seth Drake is the boy next door, he is a year older than Neely and these two strike up an incredible friendship, they truly were inseparable. As Neely’s home life shatters due to her father working long hours and her mother seeking solace at the bottom of a bottle, Seth’s family become her adopted one and the Drake’s become the only people that she can rely on. As these two get older though, those lines of friendship blur and these two cross the line to something more and their reliance on one and other deepens even further.

The relationship between Seth and Neely was adorable, you sensed their attraction, their love for one and other and their chemistry. They were responsible, no matter the temptation and tried their hardest to be what the other needed. So what would happen when life strikes another blow and these two are torn apart?

“I LOVE YOU, NEELY EVANS!”

Neely’s life was about to change for the worse when her cheating father is discovered and Neely’s alcoholic mother makes them up-sticks and move back to Tennessee. They write, they talk but what happens when that all comes to an end and what happens when Neely finally makes it back to Malibu?

Neely is a strong girl, she had to be to become the main carer for a manic depressive and alcoholic mother. She lost her late teens to the bottle and my heart broke for her so many times. Seth was always her anchor and it pained me when interference often caused misunderstandings. There was one particular person I wanted to throttle who seemed to be the one constant in everything that went wrong in Neely’s life.

“I would never waste years of my life getting wasted like Mama had, still allowing herself to be tortured over something that just wasn’t meant to be.”

Now that Seth is following in his mother’s footsteps and is now gracing the TV screen will fame and fortune go to his head, or will he stay true to his roots and his friends? His life has changed in Neely’s absence, will she forever be the past, or will she remain the one that got away?

Andrea Smith stays true to her character’s ages and their dialogue and actions were very representative of their ages, something that is often missed. Their stories are relatable and these two really got under my skin because when they hurt, I hurt. First loves always leave an impression, especially those born from a solid friendship and I cannot wait to see what happens to Neely and Seth going forward. Has too much happened or will these two get the happily ever after they so richly deserve? I cannot wait for Paparazzi!!

SUCH A HEARTFELT BEGINNING TO WHAT, I HOPE, WILL BE ANOTHER BRILLIANT SERIES.

Andrea Smith introduces the reader to Neely Evans, a fourteen year old girl whose world has been torn asunder and will never be the same again. Due to her father's job, the family has been uprooted from Tennessee to California - a change that Neely does not like. However she meets her one and only friend and soon things start to be a bit better. Then suddenly her world is torn apart through infidelity, alcohol and the fact that she must become the main carer for her mother.

Seth Drake is a year older than Neely, but he and his family soon become the only people that she can rely on. Seth and Neely start out as friends, but soon their teenage hormones start to change that situation - even though nothing more than innocent kisses are shared. Seth has become the one thing in her life that she knows she can rely on.

Once again Neely's world is shattered when she is forced to leave Seth behind and return to Tennessee with her ever demanding and alcoholic mother. The world that Neely has grown to exist in is no longer there. She must become the adult in the family.

Neely's middle teenage years are full of heartache and despair, with a little bit of light provided by Seth, It is heartbreaking to witness all that Neely must go through. Yes there were a few teary moments that had me reaching for my tissues. But all through this tumultuous time, the one thing that Neely has is an undeniable strength to get her through.

As the book concluded, awaiting for the second instalment, we are left wondering what isin store next for this young girl who is on the verge of becoming an adult.

A wonderful book by Ms Smith, one that I thoroughly enjoyed and could not put down. I read it in one non-stop session, it was that good!! I eagerly await the next instalment, to see how Neely will cope with further changes in her life.

A thoroughly deserved FIVE STARS from this reader.

This is a wonderful coming of age story about a girl named Neely. Neely is a native of Tennessee but is living in Malibu California, her and her family moved there for her dads job. She feels out of place in California until she meets a new friend named Seth. As they get older their friendship becomes something more, but still innocent. Seth and his family become Neely's lifeline when her parents marriage goes up in flames. Forced to move back to Tennessee, Neely must face life with her alcoholic mother, away from her father and the boy she loves.

This story is set in 1996, but flashes back a few years, then flashes back to the present. It gives the story a fullness even though it's a novella.

This is just a great story. Once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. I think it's a story many of us can relate to, I know I did. I can't wait for the next book!

Another great book from Andrea Smith! But, you know what's even better? The fact that this is the 1st of 4 novellas in her brand new Evermore Serial! Yep-you read that correctly. We get 3 more books in short succession!

Crushed is a fabulous story about a young girl's struggle growing up in a broken home, while trying to find herself and her place in life. Our h, Neely, was a great character and I have to say I'm really excited to learn more about her and move forward from a less than stellar upbringing. I also love our H, Seth. He is sweet, loving, and protective, but then becomes a regular teenage boy who knows the perfect way to break a naive heart. He is our H in Crushed, but does he keep that title in Books 2-4? I guess we will just have to see what happens!

Know what I love even more? The cliffhanger we get in Crushed, the crazy naughty excerpt from Claimed (OMG, I didn't see that coming and I am SO ecstatic about it!), and the knowledge that these coming of age YA novellas turn into NA novellas, so we get the best of both worlds!!! Andrea has done it again and I am hooked!

*I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.

What a lovely, lovely sweet book.

It is a tale of finding a best friend who just gets you. Neely meets Seth. Neely has life wobbles due to the erratic behaviour of her parents.

Seth is a brilliant BFF. He is supportive, kind and - wink, wink, growing into a very handsome young man.

Crushed deals with that first love, stomach butterflies, heartbroken feeling that we all remember fondly now but at the time it felt like complete devastation and the world would end. It awoke and reminded me of young love, awakening of feelings and then feeling like my heart had been removed from my body never to return.

I need Claimed to restore my heart.

After being transplanted from Tennessee to California due to her father's job, Neely's life is changed forever. She meets her best friend Seth while in California but unfortunate circumstances lead to Neely and her mother moving back to Tennessee. So many things change in Neely's life and she goes through so much. I admire the strength her character portrays and yet my heart aches for her. I cannot wait to read what happens next.

"Crushed" is the first book in the "Evermore" series by Andrea Smith. What can I say, except that she "crushed it"?

I thoroughly enjoyed the first book. "Crushed" began with a teenager moving to a new place and meeting her new best friend. Life does what it does best, and things change dramatically.

Smith does a splendid job of presenting each character. You care what happens to each one. I did not want to put the book down. There is some time jumping going on in the book. Luckily, the way Smith does the time jumps is coherent and effortlessly followed. The story is relatable on many levels. You will feel your heartstrings playing like a banjo, plucked and strummed in every way. You will experience anger over a mother who cannot stop drinking and a father who is caught cheating. Next comes the sweet love of two innocents. Smith will take you down your memory lane with tales of first love.

"Crushed" is only the first book in the series, and I'm getting ready to start the second one. I recommend starting this series if you appreciate family drama, tales of first love and breakups, chasing dreams, and coming into your own.

This Author could write a shopping list and I would pay to read it. I don't even think about will I like her next book, I see a pre order and I am on it, like a tramp on chips. No messing around, that One-Click button gets hit faster than you can say 'Crushed'.

I am super excited about this new series. After reading this first instalment, I am desperately hungry for so much more. I love it when an Author can come up with original ideas. A completely new story with all the elements that keep me hanging on the edge of my seat.

A young girl named, Neely tells us a story that will not only bring sadness to your heart for the way her Mother treated her, but it will also melt your heart when you read of the love that blossoms through her teenage years. It's a beautiful read and I can tell there are lots of adventures to come. Specially after reading a sneak preview of book two that's at the end of this book. I would not have expected that, but that's what I love about this Author. She constantly surprises me, it's like going to an adventure playground and every ride is different. The rollercoaster ride that has your stomach turned upside down, the waltzer that leaves you dizzy, the water log that gets you wet. Oh!! You did not just use the water log as an analogy for wetness? hehe! I most certainly did folks.

Neely meets a young boy called, Seth. They are friends for so long, I wasn't sure things would go to the next step, but I also sort of knew he liked Neely more than just as friends. Seth has huge dreams for his future and just like Neely, I hope he fulfils all his dreams, but I am also kind of hoping that he never forgets Neely, because I am one hundred percent certain that, Neely will never forget Seth.

When parents divorce it can affect children in different ways. I suppose it all depends on how amicable the separation/divorce is. Unfortunately with Neely's parents or at least for the mother it was anything but amicable.

A young Neely is finding her way in life and the room for mistakes to be made is huge. Life is all about lessons and, I for one can't wait to see what Neely does next. I actually have no clue what will happen, when it will happen, I just know it's going to be an exciting adventure that I am going to take every page of the way.

3.5/5

I liked this more than I'd expected. I knew I'm going into a young adult coming of age story but I definitely hadn't thought Neely to become a matured person so soon. Sure, the circumstances around her changed her but the fact that her views and thoughts changed so drastically was a bit too much for me. Anyway, the central idea of the story with Neely moving to California, finding a good friend in the boy next door, strangling herself in her parents' issues and growing up sooner than one would, is well thought of and certainly commendable. The emotions are well-built and I loved the story for it's firsts; everything from the first crush to the first love, to the first time finding herself in a difficult situation, Neely comes alive to me through the transparent narrative.

I would recommend this to all those looking for a quick and sweet coming of age story which doesn't center around, but is efficiently topped with, a romance of firsts.

Andrea Smith pulled me into the story of Nelly Evans. She seems to have an idyllic life then her father takes a job in California where she meets Seth, her best friend. Seth and Nelly have an amazing friendship and bond. Then Nelly’s world is shaken and she is forced to leave Seth. These two best friends have an unbelievable love but distance makes it hard to maintain a relationship. This is a solid young adult story that begins this journey of growth for Nelly and Seth. In a world full of phonies can they find their true passion and love?

For young adults and adults .

This book is a good read for YA and adults. It deals with innocence and loss of innocence. Andrea shows a girl who grows up before her time. She presents an accurate picture of the emotions that a young girl would go through taking the role this young girl has. I am looking forward to the next book in this series. Thanks Andrea.

Andrea Smith grabbed by attention from the beginning. In my opinion she did a good job of staying true to the ages of Neely and Seth. I believe this is going be a fun journey from children to adulthood for Neely and Seth. Seth seems to be the typical boy with hormones raging. Neely has had to grow up fast by taking care of her mother. She also has the sense to know her and Seth are to young to make a go of a long distant relationship. This is a fast read. If you like young adult genre then in my opinion it is worth taking a look at.

The teenage years are already hard for a young person, the changes they go through, physically and mentally, the trying to find their place in the world, the peer pressure that young people are exposed to. Add to all that dealing with difficult family situations, and moving from the environment you've lived in all your life, and it could make or break a teenager.

Neely Evans just moved to California from Tennessee with her parents and doesn't really have too many friends, that is until the boy next door befriends her. Their innocent relationship slowly progresses as the hormones start taking over and soon Neely and Seth are doing a little bit more that swimming in the ocean.

But while her relationship with Seth is blooming, her family life is crumbling down.

Soon Neely has to pick sides and choose between her mother or her father.

She assumes the role of adult at a too young age and start caring for her mother who's drinking is out of control. Leaving behind not only her father but the boy she fell in love with.

The writing of this novella flowed beautifully, the author engages the reader from the very beginning with a compelling storyline and characters that you can relate to. I can honestly say that Neely's family situation broke my heart, I felt for her. No child should have to choose between her mother or father at any point in their lives. But through it all Neely shows great maturity and strength, something else I loved about her.

This is only the first installment of this series and I'm looking forward to see what's in Neely's future in book 2.

Crushed by Andrea Smith is the first book in the Evermore series. The books are not written as full length novels, but rather as novellas. Almost like episodes. This is a coming of age story, that tells about innocence and the loss of it. The book also deals well with emotions that a young teenage girl would experience during this time in her life.

Neilah Evans, or Neely, is a fourteen year old girl who has been forced to move across the country by her father's job. Neely is from Tennessee, and California is a huge change for her. She is not fond of the change and is happy to meet her next door neighbor, Seth.

Seth Drake is fifteen years old. He is the typical boy next door. He wants to follow in his mother's footsteps, she says he has talent. Neely becomes close to Seth and his family over the years.

Later, Neely's world is torn apart by her parents issues, and she has to step into an adult role for her mother. Seth has become more than just a friend to Neely. They share a series of firsts, and the only thing that she seems to be able to lean on in her life. Neely's parents cause her more heartbreak when her mother forces her to leave California for Tennessee. Neely must grow up quickly and become an adult before she is ready.

I enjoyed this novella. And, I look forward to the next in the series. I read this book in about an hour and am excited to start the next one, as soon as possible.

I was given this book for my honest review.

This is the first book in the Evermore Series.

When life hands you lemons the normal would be to make lemonade but in Neely’s life it is more like lemon cake. Some lemons are sour, some are sweet but when growing up our taste buds tend to waiver but as we mature we know what tastes are just perfect at least to us. When the unthinkable happens we all have to gather our strength from within to become strong for others around us. Our weaknesses cannot become our downfall so with that said Neely and the impressionable Seth take on a quest of coming of age.

Being young and growing up is already difficult for all of us but when parents think they can get away with things we the children become the impressionable. We always say that we won’t end up like our parents or we will wait for Mr. Right. Well in this case can Mr. Right be the escape that is just needed.

As this author continues Neely’s journey we will just have to wait and see what arises.

Pick up this fascination of a read today

Happy Reading

What a great coming of age story. Neely and her family have moved to California from Tennessee. She meets Seth and they become quick friends, as the years go by the friendship turns into something more. When her family life implodes she is forced to learn some hard lessons. She has to take care of her mother and be away from her father and Seth. I loved the flashbacks and then going back to the present, you get so much of the story this way. I loved this story, I can not wait for the next installment. I just have to know what's going to happen.

Nelly is a small town girl from Tennessee who finds herself living in California. She meets the boy next door, Seth, and he soon becomes her best friend. He and his family become her anchor when her life is thrown into upheaval. Nelly's father's cheating and her mom's desire to use her as a pawn to hurt her dad put an end to the budding romance between Nelly and Seth. A heartwarming story about first love, heartbreak, and growing up. I look forward to reading the next book in this series! I highly recommend this 5-star read!

These two fast become friends and as they two become older the feeling become so much more than friends. Than Neely gets the shock of her life her parents split and she moves back to Tenn with her mother. Leaving Seth behind. What will happen to this couple. New author for me, but definitely won't be last book I read. This was a YA to NA novella, part of 4 book series. In book 1 we meet Neely, age 17. The story goes back to age 13 when first she meets Seth, and flips back an forth thru the four years of her life w Seth. There is a harsh topic of alcoholism as well as suicide that are briefly touched on in this novella but nothing too bad.
I highly recommend this book to YA romance lovers.
