This book is connected to the third volume and begins with the enthronement of Emperor Jiajing, who eliminated some former ministers by the argument on etiquette and grasped all the power. Then he lived a corrupt life and didnt pay attention to the affairs of the state, which made Yan Song, an evil minister, was in charge of the political power. Meanwhile, the finance in Ming Dynasty declined and the army became weak. This book mainly talks about the fight for power and against Japanese aggressor.
A refreshing style of writing from the author, narrating history in the form of a novel, while adding associations to contemporary society to allow easier reading and "lower the barrier" for people who are keen on learning more history but afraid of reading dry texts or textbook/academic style writing that is so prevalent of many history books. A definite recommendation to readers who want to understand more about the Ming Dynasty of China.
Among all of the emperors, the most memorable one for me is Zhu Houzhao (Zhengde Emperor). Most will think that he’s a fool because he doesn’t care about power; however, in my opinion, he is pretty smart. Life is short, why bother to waste it on something that you don’t like? Go pursue freedom, live free, and make life worthwhile.
