The Spirit
Before the white man settled the Appalachians, he stood over the people of the Tribe, providing all they needed to flourish in the shadow of the mountains. The many tribes have given him many different names. Wakan Tanko. Maheo. To the people that first hunted the corner of Appalachia known to later generations as Wright’s Holler, he was Weshemoneto, the Great Spirit. To Anna Madeline Wright, he would simply be Wes. Born in the holler that bore her name, “Annie” Wright came from people that had learned to live on the land, people who believed in the magic saturating the woods around them. People who knew how to survive. Circumstance of birth gave her power. Her skills gave her respect. Her magic gave them hope. In a town not yet influenced by the progress of the industrial revolution, Annie was a pauwau. A witch. The winter of 1836 hit the town of McAllen hard and with her people in danger of annihilation, Annie called on the spirits for the power to save them. Her desperation called Weshemoneto himself . When they collided, she had to make a choice: Lose her town or lose her heart. What happened next would become the stuff of legend for centuries to come.

"4,25" stars from me!!
I always find very enjoyable reading unique paranormal plots and this one was not an exception, the spirit is the first installment in the series and well i can't even guess what is going to happen next. The author created a very beautiful imaginary world where you are easily drown into it, the background story had the ability to make you feel like you are one of the characters and the same time feel everything that is how descriptive narration this story has.
The constant battle between good vs evil, a great danger is alluring leaving our heroine a fearless, strong and skilled witch Annie to call the great power and fight..here comes Wes the great spirit giving her a choice of winning this battle but with a sacrifice from herself (i call it gift not a sacrifice) their passionate connection is instant and explosive.
This book also had scattered emotions all over it from sadness, happiness even anxiety of what is going come next adding more suspense in the storyline. Definitely recommend it and i'm looking forward for the next installment of the series.

Again the author has mesmerised me. This book is full of characters that launch you into a world of fantasy, with the most fascinating approach to good versus evil I've ever read. Once you begin to read, you cannot put it down. The unexpected love story, and outcome will bring tears to your eyes at the end. I am so amazed at the ability the author has to write a legend of this magnitude, with such detail. This is one paranormal read not to be missed; especially for those who have a love and respect for Native Americans. Reading this story was like going on one of your most favourite magical Disney rides at Universal. It was the thrill of a lifetime, and You never forget it. Just Wow! I was given this as an ARC In exchange for an honest review.

Paranormal Romances come and go but The Spirit will stick with me forever with the solid story building, the rich descriptions and the emotions that are brought out to the reader in each turn of the page. Harper L Jameson breathes life into this work of art like no other, with the absolute promise The Spirit, the first novel of The Tribe series, will unravel epic story after story in its wake. The character of Annie Wright is strong, powerful, and self sacrificing for the people who have grown, lived, survived and died in the town of McAllen. You can feel her sadness, her determination and each breathless experience that Harper has penned with vivid clarity sucking you more and more into the holler with a book I couldn’t put down. Steeped in legends, magic, vengeance, lust and love The Spirit makes my soul crave to be pulled into the next incredible tale by Harper L Jameson.

When I started reading this story, I was a bit of afraid that it would be hard to read because some of the words that are used in this story were hard to remember along with their meanings, but I was glad to see that it was much easier to read than I thought.
The heroine of this story is Annie, who is the witch of their small mountain village. She is areally powerful character, who has her own opinions and always look after the needs of those in need. I loved learning everything that happened around her and how it all just made her even stronger. She is a well written and very likable character.
The hero Wes, who is the Great Spirit was strong, but at the same time I liked how he seems to be even more when he was together with Annie. Upon meeting Annie the chemistry between our hero and heroine was so strong and intense I found myself blushing! I really enjoy watching the intensity grow with each page.
I found the plot to be really interesting to read, it made me want to gobble up the pages as quickly as possible. I am glad that there will be more to this story to come! I think this story is perfect to everyone who love stories with fantasy and romance the kind that pull you inside the pages and spit you out once the book is done longing for more of the story.
I am giving this story Five out of Five Cupcakes!

First of all, Harper Jameson is a really great author. I was impressed by the writing and that is including the fact that there were approximately one million "ain't"s in the book (which was only because of the language going on, not because the author actually uses ain't) and I appreciated that because I HATE that non-word. A lot. That really drives home how awesome the writing is because I saw past it.
Second, you can tell how much Harper cares about her work by her writing and who she is as a person. I love that! Writing because its in your soul is a key characteristic for some of my absolute favorite authors!
And third, the story overall was great! I wish that the big huge build up scene (no spoilers!) was a little bit more, you know? But even with that being said it was a great book! I am glad this was a book I was shown because I enjoyed it. Harper is great at building a world and the characters that occupy the world. You feel like there is a piece of history coming alive in her story. It reminds me of stories being passed down from a grandma to her kids. Fairy tales that bring history to life and make you believe in a love that is meant for you. I can't wait to read more by Harper! You guys should be sure to check her out!

The Spirit was my first foray into paranormal romance, so I went into this book with very low expectations. Within the first few sentences, I realized I had severely underestimated Harper L Jameson and her ability to weave an amazing story. Never, have I experienced so many emotions while reading a book - joy, sadness, anger, hatred, pain, suffering, hope....and oh so many tears were shed while immersing myself in the lives of the people of the Holler. This book is a MUST READ!

This is not a genre that I typically read, however it came highly recommended to me and I'm so happy I gave it a go. The Spirit is a compelling tale and the writing is evocative. I thoroughly enjoyed it and would definitely recommend it.

What a book!! I was recommended this book by a friend and I have to say that I'm very happy she did.
It is somewhat PNR in the sense that it's animal shifters but it's more spiritual than actual shape shifting.
This isn't my typical book, I've never read anything involving Indians and their spirit guides and although this is fiction, it is still very much believable which I do really enjoy. It's also written in a way that reads traditional whilst still conforming to modern day English, for example, the feel is that of the 1800's but written in a modern way. This also pleased me.
I love not just the love storyline but the whole thing, I loved the way the whole white man vs 'injun was written, the whole white man killing Indians because they were believed to be savages, the way that not all white man were against them and tried to protect many in the war that was to come.
Yes the whole story was based on a love between Wes and Annie, but that wasn't what sold it for me, it was the love between man and man, between woman and woman and between man and woman. It was the fact that it wasn't about colour and it wasn't about prejudice, it was about the fact that when called to fight, no man/woman is superior and no man or woman need doe senselessly.
I loved the romance and the love between Wes and Annie. It was written in a way that was so believable that I could feel it. I could see the spirits and the magic surrounding them and when an author can do that you know it's a brilliant story and that it will stay with you.
I cannot wait to read the next book, it was definitely left open and unanswered.
Would I recommend this book to a friend, absofrickinglutely.
Happy Reading :-)

The book The Spirt: A Novel of the Tribe is written by Harper L. Jameson. It tells the story of an Appalachian witch named Annie whose family has protected the region for generations . Annie is determined to save her holler and all of the people in it from disaster. She calls upon the spirits to protect them and loses her heart in the process.
I could relate to this book on a lot of levels. I absolutely loved the authors voice and writing style. Harper L. Jameson constructed a world and time that was believable. As a person who lives in a state with Native American culture making up a large part of our culture, I loved the idea of a witch, or Pauwau, being the heroine. Here we call them curanderas and their magic has been called upon to heal the sick for many generations. I really loved the idea of the tribe, or native people crossing to another realm to protect their people and way of life. This book represented a lot of the spiritual ideas amongst the native Americans cultures.
The book started out strong with a bond between Annie and Shep. Two people whose lives have been entertwined since birth. I would have liked t0 see their relationship more developed. They lean on each other and support each other, but these two characters could have been given more breadth.
I really enjoyed the fact that the author tried to make the book more authentic to the Native American culture using native language in the text. However, it was difficult at times to figure out the meanings the words. Often times, I had to book mark my spot and look up the meanings and phrases which was tedious. Having the translations available in parentheses or as a footnote would have been better.
I loved the world the author crafted. The idea of an alternative land on the other side of the wind was original. I did find the story line a bit jumpy with a lot of characters added in. Some of them seemed to come out of nowhere. That made the story confusing at times.
All in all I liked the characters but would have liked more development for them. I also loved the world that was crafted but the new characters added in needed more explanation for their origins. This book does end as a cliffhanger. A nice start to a new series and I give this book 3 stars.

Annie the pauwau, the witch, her family's women have a history of helping the people of the holler for centuries. Shepherd, the eluwilusett, the Bible thumping religious man bringing faith to everyone in the holler. Shep is like a close big brother to Annie, and together they bring hope and healing to the folks, the cha mak mon, the white man, of the holler.
Until Annie's visions bring her scenes of an icy snow storm the likes of which the holler has never seen, and it's inhabitants will never recover from. Annie makes a deal with the Great Indian God, Weshemoneto: Annie for the safe deliverance of her people from the storm and back to their lands when it was over. It seemed simple enough. What man in the holler was going to marry a witch anyway? Her virginity was a very small price to pay for the lives of all of her people in the holler, her people! She didn't mind giving it to the Indian God. It held little value to her.
But Annie hadn't figured on kisses that melted her very bones and shook her to her very core. She also didn't figure on falling in love with Wes. And there were those in The Tribe not happy with their leader having a white witch for a squaw and for sheltering the white man while their storm brewed at home. Would the price it took to make everyone happy become too high for Wes and Annie's happiness?
This is a departure from the usual genres I peruse, and I am so very glad I had the chance to read it. Like a richly woven cloth, this tale weaves you right into the story starting at page one and doesn't let go until the very end. You feel like you are right there in and amongst the action, smelling the village's fires, hearing the sounds of daily life, the animals in the woods. Only when everything is silent do you have to worry that bad magic is in the air. This book was so intriguing, so suspenseful, that it kept me on my toes the whole time wondering what was going to happen next. I really, really enjoyed it.
I gather from the blurb at the end that there will be a sequel coming out this year and I, for one, will be anxiously waiting to read it. There are unanswered questions begging for answers! I am very happy to give this book 5 stars. I was provided with an ARC by the author in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

Wow.
I haven't really read anything like this before, and I'm certainly glad I did. This is an amazing debut novel by Harper L. Jameson. It quite honestly took my breath away. It was beautifully written, with detailed descriptions which helped to set the scene and take you on a journey.
I was so captivated by this tale, I very nearly shed a tear or two. I found myself drawn in to each of the characters, feeling their emotions alongside them. The pain and suffering, the joy, the need...
I look forward to reading more from this author.

You don't wanna miss this fiery paranormal romance from new author Harper L. Jameson! I've had the privilege of reading an ARC and didn't want to put it down (although life demanded it). Its super fast pace will leave you panting for more (you think I'm exaggerating). The setting (late 1800s Appalachia) is familiar enough to imagine without too much confusion and some of the topics (like prejudice) that come up really hit home for today's reader. The gravity of the situation that the witch of Wrights Holler--Annie--faces is felt from early on. The Native American magic and mythology that Jameson weaves so craftily allows you to suspend reality for a while. And let's not forget the clashing of Annie's witch magic with The Spirit's tribal magic that brings the two together like a tempest-driven wave crashing against a rocky coast....again and again and again......
Do yourself a favor and pre-order this on Kindle, and then pre-order the print copies of this along with the second installment!
If you are sensitive to explicit content...well...there is some language and there are a couple hot and heavy scenes, but it's certainly not every page or even half of the pages, as Jameson likes to mercilessly tease her audience. There's much more going on here beyond that, I would still recommend the read (maybe with some well-placed skimming involved).
While you're waiting on this pre-order to hit your e-reader on June 15th, look up Harper L. Jameson's short story "The Blanket" set in the same world.

New to Paranormal Romance, Author, Harper L. Jameson, sent chills down my back with her debut Novel, The Spirit. I’m no stranger to paranormal romance, but this is my first time to read a novel based on any kind of Indian Legend. And I found myself intrigued with what she wrote.
Instantly falling in love with Weshemoneto (Wes), the Great Spirit, a God to his kind. His Mother, Kokumthena their creator. Weshemoneto, watched over and protected his kind with great pride. His hatred for the white people never wavered, until a little witch from the Holler, the same mountain that the white people stole from them, stole his heart in her plea for him to save her people from a winter storm so brutal it would kill any living thing in its path.
Anna Madeline Wright, is a witch. Born from a long line of witches, Annie was powerful in many ways that helped the white people in the Holler, that was named after her family. She helped them with illnesses and by seeing the future, she was able to help them prepare for what might be coming. With a devastating winter storm on its way she would do whatever it took to save the people in Wright Holler. Even give her body to a sexy as hell Indian God.
There are other characters that play such a great part in this Novel. My personal opinion? It took me a little bit to get into this book, never have reading a book of this kind before. But the more I read it, the more I was sucked in and I can’t wait for the next book to come out in this series!

This paranormal/fantasy read truly had me on the seat of my chair waiting to see what would happen next. I think this is a great debut novel for Harper L. Jameson.
I love the world of witches and Tribal Gods that Harper L. Jameson has created. Annie is the heroine of the story and Wright's Holler's local witch. She endeared herself to my heart as I continued to read the story of her and her Holler. The story to me was already refreshing with Annie....adding Wes, the Tribal God, kicked it up another notch. The two of them together turned the story of legends into a new romance. I found it interesting how the author took two completely different worlds (one from the past and one from the current day in the book) to create amazing interactions. There is a little bit of everything in the story between the two worlds...ranging from the smallest of laughter, the greatest love, and the depths of rage.
The ancient language at times was hard to follow, although there is a glossary of terms at the beginning of the book. However, it did give the read an authentic feel with the ancient terms. I think without the ancient terms it wouldn't have had the same intricate feeling of the interactions of the two worlds. Thank you, Harper L. Jameson, for the refreshing paranormal/fantasy read. I can't wait for more.

I was given a ARC of The Spirit by Harper Jameson for an honest review.
This book was set in the Appalachian mountains back in time with Indian legends and witches.
Annie is a spitfire born from a long line of witches. Weshemoneto (Wes) is a great spirit God to his people. There are other very important characters that draw you in and leave you on the edge of your seat at times. Is a romance finding your soulmate. With some mystery thrown in.
This is a new author for me but I already can't wait for the sequel. It was very well written and entertaining. The speech used is authentic to the time and place. If you like paranormal with a little Indian folklore give it a try.

This book was completely unique and in a wonderful way. Set in Appalachia so hits home with me. A mix of fantasy and folk lore mesmerizes you from the start and keeps you hooked.
Annie is a witch from birth, in a long line of witches. With her best friend Shep, the Reverend, she keeps Wright's Holler safe. A terrifying vision leads her to Wes, a massive Native American God that ignites her in way she never felt before when his magic calls to hers.
This fantasy was gripping, sexy, and gut-wrenching. Filled with magic and true a Appalachian feel, the debut novel was a four star winner!

This book was amazing. Harper does a great job using emotions and details to make you want to not stop reading! I literally read the whole book in one sitting because I just had to know what happened next! All of the characters come to life and you get to know the whole family ... Which I love .. I can't wait to read the other books in the series! If you are new to paranormal romance you will love these books! You too can fall in love with Annie and all the characters from the Holler !

*******given an ARC for an honest review****
I'm normally not a fan of books that have you referring to the built in glossary. It always reminds me of watching a movie with subtitles. However, I loved The Spirit and the characters. Harper has a way of writing that just pulls you in. If you are considering reading the book, you should definitely read it. I promise, the subtitles are worth it. ;)

ARC for an honest review!
I don't usually read these. I love paranormal romances but not when they are in the 18th century but this was a really good one. The effort it took to write this book is big. I have enjoyed this book immensely.
First book by this author and I really hope she continues to write so vividly and amazes me more.

I was hooked
I have to read as a job so I don't have time to read for fun. I am so glad that this was recommended to me. I couldn't put it down. I read it in one sitting.
I felt like I was there because so much attention was given to scenery, plot and the characters. It felt real and it had me totally immersed. I love the story line of two unlikely and forsaken peoples coming together. For the sake of survival and in the end for the sake of love and friendship. I would recommend that everyone read The Spirit, it will leave you wanting more from Harper Jameson.

The Spirit is one of my favorites. I read it about a month ago, the way Harper writes is amazing. You feel like you are right there in the story no matter what's happening. The descriptions are out of this world. You will love it if you give the story a try. I am now addicted and waiting for the next story. Not so patiently either!
Harper, I applaud you. Keep writing, I'll keep reading!

This story was an intriguing paranormal romance.
Jameson's world-building is really well-done. It was easy to imagine the scenery. Also, something that I really appreciated, the magic within this realm was easy to understand and conceptualize. There were clear rules for way things were (or weren't) a certain way that were easy to understand.
I also appreciated the use of dialect within the characters speech. It made them feel more real, and multi-dimensional.
Overall, this was an enjoyable novel, and I look forward to seeing what is next in store.

Harper Jameson created a beautifully written tale of love, power, and two cultures overcoming bad blood. This story is steeped in romance, friendship, folklore, history, and magic.
Logan McAllister narrated The Spirit with a wonderful range of voices and inflections that represented each character perfectly. His "storyteller" cadence added to the rustic ambiance of the story and brought it to life.
If you're looking for something that sits on the edge of historical, paranormal, mythological, and erotic romance...definitely give this a listen or read!

This book had it all. I felt like I was in the story. Harper Jameson gave such vivid descriptions that I was entranced.
Annie and Wes come from 2 different worlds. However, these 2 need each other. They love each other but they also love their own people. They had incredible chemistry and had to overcome so many obstacles.
This was a paranormal romance that was incredible. I loved every minute of it and look forward to more from this author.

In all honesty, I couldn't finish this one. It's a very slow start. I didn't understand half of what was happening. When I got farther into the story, the unfamiliar words just made it worse for me and I became more lost. Yes, there is a glossary for the foreign words, but who wants to stop the check a meaning? This book is definitely not for me. Remember, I did NOT finish this book, so I would suggest that you read it for yourself and form your own opinion.

An interesting and unique fantasy story that I’m still not sure how I feel about to be honest. I like the mythology and the way the story played out. I’m just not sure how I feel about the characters themselves.
Overall though it was good and definitely intriguing!
