Some good spells, but a lot of nonsense. The author treats a range of gods, including those from current African and Native American traditions, as a pick-and-mix, to be called upon without any real understanding. Given that she tells us to draw Janus without knowing he has two faces, I have no confidence in her knowledge of how to appropriately treat Orisha. She also includes several spells that are harmful to the environment, such as deliberately releasing a balloon.

This book is okay for what it is: a somewhat flawed recipe book for spells. I had hoped for a bit more theory and discussion on how to create one's own spells, but this is more a basic recipe book that may be helpful for beginners to see how some witchcraft spells might be worked. The author does give some brief discussion sometimes about why certain aspects were chosen for a particular recipe, and the beginning has some good information about working energy and intent/focus.

I personally have a major problem with the pick-&-choose approach to invoking deities, often with full ignorance and zero (or very little) discussion about who they are and how they're worshipped and interacted with. I did try one spell that invoked many goddesses, just to try it out before commenting on it, and I honestly felt a bit dirty afterward, as if perhaps I'd disrespected them by calling on them from a place of ignorance. The only disclaimer the author gives in the entire book is to consider carefully before invoking Hecate into your life, but many spells have literal pages of lists of random names to call out and implore.

There are also questionable environmental practices encouraged, like releasing balloons and throwing non-degradable spell jars/bundles/components into bodies of water. I honestly waffled on giving it only 1 star due to this disappointing aspect (especially since many pagans and witchcraft practitioners hold nature extremely sacred), but I did get some helpful craft reminders and correspondence usage.

This is my first DNF for this year. This was an attempt at a reread. I wasn't able to finish the first time or this time. I'm trying to get back into practicing wicca and was hoping for a bit of a guiding hand... This was not what I thought. I may give it yet another go once I get situated..

While I think each and every wiccan/witch should eventually work their way up to creating their own spells and not using those of others, this is a great starting point for those who are just beginning Wicca and want to get the feel of how spells are written. So definitely for newbies only. It’s a good stepping stone on the path to adept practice.
