Abby Merganser believes in rainbows and happy endings. The daughter of the town minister, she is a source of sunshine and laughter for the citizens of Eden's Grove. But there is one thing Abby wants more than anything in the the love of Dr. Seth Hendon. Abby has been in love with Seth for as long as she can remember. But he still thinks of her as his little sister's best friend. Clearly, Seth doesn't know what's good for him. So Abby vows to prove she's the perfect prescription. Even if it means making him jealous enough to propose. After all, she's tried everything else. Cooking for him. Managing his life--even when he complains that she's driving him crazy.
A Heart Full Of Sadness Dr. Seth Hendon has had it with being a doctor. Weary and dispirited after losing a couple of his patients, including his own beloved sister, Seth is ready to sell his practice and leave medicine--and Abby--behind. She's too tempting, too full of life for a dedicated bachelor like himself. But Seth hadn't reckoned on Abby's determination to show him where his heart belongs--with her. No sooner have they set the wedding date than a shocking tragedy occurs, leaving Seth, and the whole town, praying for a miracle....
This is a disappointing read that fails to ignite any spark. The central premise of a heroine pining for the hero for what feels like an eternity is a tired trope that this novel unfortunately does little to revitalize. The character development is shallow, leaving the heroine as a bland and uninteresting figure.
The plot meanders along at a sluggish pace, lacking the necessary tension or conflict to keep readers engaged. The chemistry between the protagonists is completely absent, making their interactions feel forced and devoid of emotion. Ultimately, the book is a forgettable story that offers little in terms of character development, plot progression, or emotional connection.
I enjoyed this book but couldn't help but feel bad for Abby's SIL Emily. That poor girl really thinks Ansel loves her, I kept wishing she would wise up and leave him.
Abby Merganser has been in love with Dr. Seth Hendon for as long as she can remember. After the death of his sister, she cooks for him, helps manage his medical practice, and is there every time he turns around. Seth still thinks of Abby has his little sister's best friend. He's determined to keep his distance from Abby and let her down gently. But Abby has other plans, including making Seth jealous enough to propose, even if she has to fabricate a new suitor.
I enjoyed the first half of this book. Abby is one of those happy people who see the best in everything. She was exactly what Seth needed while he grieved for his sister and worried about losing his patients. But we quickly learn that Abby is having medical problems that no one knows about. This impacts their relationship and left me a bit depressed. Luckily, this is a romance so I knew there would be a happy ending. My rating: 3.5 Stars.
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗴𝗲𝗺!! A total tear jerker towards the end while a funny, cute, silly read towards the start.
• Unrequited love • Grumpy × Sunshine • Age gap • Opposites attract • Historical romance • TW: death (in all forms, ie MMC's sister died in the past, a young boy dies due to unknown reasons relating to health and the FMC's potential death)
I started this book KNOWING that the FMC is going to push the MMC away and was WAITING for the pain... fortunately or unfortunately as i kept reading, i got too invested to remember about the pain and was just happy that they're getting together but then came THE PAIN and God, it was bad, so bad, ugly crying bad, but i loved every second.
Abby has loved Seth all her life but Seth is against those feelings because (1) he's twice her age (2) she's his dead sister's bestfriend. Despite all this, she still thinks that she can make him love her and woah, she knows how to work it!! Making Seth jealous by an imaginary man was hilarious, add on that a guy from the town they live in is also interested made me enjoy the jealousy he wanted to show but didn't (much). Seth has become (more) grumpy since his sister's death, so little Miss Sunshine and smiles though he finds annoying, he still loves it, even if he doesn't know it, she makes him see the positive while all he sees is the negative, she makes him want to stay while his plan is to get away...
Did I cry all throughout the end chapters? YES Did I also understand why Abby didn't tell him? YES Did I have no hope? YES Does this have a hea? YESSSSS
Another thing I loved was that we see what happened further with the secondary characters as well, like Abby's brother Jed who would was currently obsessed with making a flying thing (most probably a small plane/jet?), her sister who's husband kind of left her and her daughter and more.
It takes a lot of courage to pretend to be alright, to hide what's inside you, the pain, the helplessness, the hopelessness. What Abby did was based on her experience, what she thought was best for her true love and family.
This could have been a good book, if it didn't turn into a bad melodrama, with the old. tired tale of the self-sacrificing h, playing "noble idiot" and telling the H she no longer wants him and loves another man (an imaginary one, at that) because - despite his being a doctor - she refuses to tell him she's ill and may die. (Another woman he loved died and she doesn't want to put him through that again.)
Too much of the story is about her fainting, throwing up, getting headaches, blurred vision, losing her balance, falling down, and put it altogether it spells brain tumor! Much too serious a topic for a romance novel. And considering the story takes place in the 19thc, a HEA was just too much!
This is a charming story. Happy-go-lucky Abby brings smiles and joy wherever she goes. Dr. Seth is in the doldrums, having lost too many patients, including his sister. Well written, the story line flows seamlessly, drawing the reader in and holding them for the entire length. Excellent.
