Between Here and the Horizon

Rate this book
“You think you know me. You think you want to know me. But trust me, Miss Lang. Pursuing me will be the worst mistake you ever make. I’m broken beyond repair…

…and I take great pleasure in breaking everyone else around me.”

Ophelia Lang needs money, and she needs it bad. Her parent’s restaurant is going under, and ever since she lost her job teaching third grade elementary, scraping enough cash together to pay the bills has proven almost impossible. Her parents are on the brink of losing their home. The vultures are circling overhead. So when Ophelia is offered an interview for a well-paid private tutoring gig in New York, how can she possibly say no?

Ronan Fletcher is far from the overweight, balding businessman Ophelia expected him to be. He’s young, handsome, and wealthy beyond all reason. He’s also perhaps the coldest, rudest person she’s ever met, and has a mean streak in him a mile and a half wide. A hundred grand is a lot of money, however, and if tolerating his frosty temperament, his erratic mood swings and whatever else he throws at her means she’ll get paid, then that is what Ophelia will do.

Her new boss is keeping secrets, though. Awful, terrible secrets.

The ghosts of Ronan Fletcher’s past are about to turn Ophelia’s future upside down, and she can’t even see it coming.

Callie Hart delivered an intriguing, gripping, twisted read that really surprised me. 'Between Here and the Horizon' was like nothing I had expected, NOTHING. With a multitude of twists that left me with my mouth hanging open, this story about family, friends, love and second chances kept my interest from start to finish. Despite the fact the story didn’t unfold like I was expected and maybe (I think) like I would have preferred, I quite enjoyed it. It was well written, not exactly suspenseful, but for sure very enthralling.

“He was a man possessed. I was a woman lost. Together, we were two halves of something fragile and delicate, beautiful in its complexity.”

Callie’s newest release was utterly addictive, emotional, compelling and to be honest blew me away a little with some very interesting revelations. The plot was well developed, smart and kept me at the edge of my seat the entire time. Reading the blurb, I expected the story to progress in a certain way, mainly because the premise wasn’t new, but OMG, the execution was simply fantastic. As I said above, the story unfolded very differently from what I had expected. It was quite a shock to read about some events, but I have to say I enjoyed the story line.

"I haven't been bored for a single second in your company, Lang. From day one, you've intrigued me."

Ophelia was an awesome heroine and I liked her from the very beginning. Her portrayal was fantastically done and I think many readers will enjoy her character and also her journey. Ophelia has a good head on her shoulders, she’s mature, smart, loyal and has a big heart. Overall, I found her character to be very endearing and to be honest I liked her more and more with every chapter as the story progressed. The way she cared for others, the way she tried so hard at times to protect those around her was heartwarming to say the least.

“He was fearless. He was confident. He was strong, and he was honest. He was also a little broken - a truth that he didn't mind owning.”

Our hero was a very interesting character. Even if at first he was a little rude and maybe a little mean as well, I liked him. He wasn’t an a$$hole, not really, which I appreciated it and his personality was quite...enjoyable. At least to me! As the story progressed he completely won me over with his bravery and his kindness. He was sweet, he was thoughtful, he was considerate and overall, a pretty great hero.

I loved reading about these two characters together. I loved the dynamic between them, their entertaining interactions and the sweet and sexy moments between them. They were good together and perfect for each other.

"I'll admit I'm not the man I used to be. But you make feel like I might be able to find that man again."

Overall, I enjoyed these characters’ story, but I would have wanted the romantic aspect to be more developed. As much as I enjoyed these two together, I have to say I wouldn’t have minded a little more chemistry between them. As for the ending…I liked it and I enjoyed the epilogue, but IMO it was too rushed, everything being wrapped up with a nice little bow way too quickly for my liking. That being said, I liked this one and I enjoyed Mrs. Hart’s writing very much.

It has been some time since my last “Dear Author” review – but yeah here it comes :

Dear Ms. Hart,

Already since some time your books are on my reading list but as the days always seem to have to little reading time when you are a Blogger always something came up.

But now finally I came across your latest book, the time was right and here I am just after finishing “Between Here and the Horizon” I think you owe me some chocolate or similar for the shock you gave me or something stronger containing alcohol would even be better.

YOU know pretty well the moment I mean I am sure, but just to point out – I am talking about the “event” around the 20% mark my kindle said.

My jaw was actually hitting the floor and my head was shaking in a “No .. no .. NO … you can not be serious… you have to be f.. kidding me” way.

Shortly followed with tears in my eyes … and I can still not fully comprehend that moment or what it did with me.

Well I am not able to say much about the actual story here –due to (for the non reader not so obvious) plotline reasons.

But I can assure the readers that you did your best to create a really surprising plot, because nothing would have prepared me for what happened here, you really muted me down to a “at the kindle pages staring” something.

I have a comparing book title ready to give the readers a hint but I will not use it as it would be to obvious.

Only saying that I was like .. “yeah sure when I turn the page all of this will go away because there has been a misunderstanding” …but it did NOT go away - then a second later there was me checking the book blurb for any mention of this being a paranormal novel as that would have helped my cause in that second, but sorry – no such luck.

The facts were a given and then you really created a spin out of this I would not have expected.

Some things were obvious others were surprising.

The story you wrote unfolded beautiful (while beautiful is a horrible word under the given circumstances) and I would like to congratulate you on a really great storyline with great characters.

So thank you for the entertaining hours you allowed me to have with your book.

Now my thoughts are definitely in the “how do I place some of your other books on my basically totally full reading schedule” area.

I haven't read very much by Callie Hart, but after reading Between Here and the Horizon, I feel like I need to read more! I enjoyed this book lots. I was surprised so many times by the direction the story took and the twist towards the end. Ophelia was great. I loved her with the kids and I loved when Sully came into the picture. I listened to the audio of this book, and Julia Farmer did a great job narrating. This is one I would recommend for those who like romantic suspense/emotional books.

description

I took one look at the cover of this book and read the synopsis and I knew I just had to sink my teeth into this one, but it is nothing at all like I expected it to be. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, because I love being surprised and love lots of plot twists and “Between Here and the Horizon” had them in spades. When I first read the synopsis I expected it to be a quite typical plot of a damsel in distress with the wealthy alpha male with attitude, but along with the plot, these characters were nothing like I expected them to be.

I instantly fell in love with Ophelia. She was such a strong heroine with a heart of gold. She’s kind, loving and compassionate but at the same time strong willed, feisty and determined. Ophelia is in dire need money and a job. She had recently lost her job teaching third grade elementary. Her parents’ restaurant is struggling and they are on the verge of losing everything, including their home. Ophelia knows she needs a job and needs one quickly. She is offered a job interview in New York and has no option but to take this opportunity.

Ronan Fletcher is young, sexy and rich, not at all what Ophelia was expecting. He is however a cold-hearted, rude and downright mean man who is in need of a serious attitude adjustment. He has a cold, hard steely gaze and deep dark secrets spanning over many years.

I have found this review particularly hard to write. You really can’t talk about much without causing spoilers, so I have decided to keep it short, sharp and sweet. This story will continue to surprise you until the very end. Although it is technically a love story, the love component of the story really took a back seat to the mystery and suspense of the story. I found it a really compelling story and it had me on the edge of my seat with all the twists and turns I never saw coming.

This is a story about love, loss, family, hurt and ultimately healing. I would most definitely recommend this story to anyone who is looking for something a bit different and who loves being surprised by every turn of the page. This story will hook you in and keep you engaged until the very last page. This story was definitely a wild ride that I was completely in awe of.

SPOILER-FREE REVIEW

This book has:

1. A perfect plot line full of mystery and surprises

2. Mind-blowing plot twists (especially the first one that comes at 20% is a complete shock... really.)

This book could easily have been a 5-star read for me but having finished it now, I feel that it was a solid 4-star read and it is all because I couldn’t feel certain things as much as I wanted to. The writing is awesome as far as the plot line and twists are concerned but it lacks on conveying certain emotions and feelings.

There are some nice sentences like the ones below, but I couldn’t relate to the characters much and I didn’t understand how their feelings changed.

“That feeling,” he panted against my mouth. “You know that feeling, where you just can’t seem to get close enough to someone? I never really knew what people were talking about until now, Lang.”

***

“You’re not real,” he told me, curling a piece of my hair around his index finger. “How can you be?”
“I’m pretty sure I am,” I said breathlessly.
“Then why do I constantly feel like I’m underwater when I’m with you? Dreaming? Imagining every second?” His mouth came down on mine, hungry and demanding. I didn’t tell him I felt the same way. He wouldn’t give me the breath to do it. He demanded it all from me, demanded everything I had.

Although these sentences are beautiful, I couldn’t understand how their dislike turned into love so quickly. The transformation wasn’t good enough.

Also, the hero didn't trust the girl at the beginning and suspected her intentions. Throughout the book, we are not really informed when and how he started to trust her. I still have no idea!

There were a bunch of good enough steamy scenes, but the emotional ones didn't live up to my expectations.

Still, the book is worth reading!

I don’t want to tell you about the plot, and believe me the blurb doesn’t say much, either. It doesn’t prepare you for what you will read about because it says something but you read something else :))))

Keep calm and read until the plot twist at 20% - it will blow your mind and at that moment you will understand that you have a different plot from what you first predicted.

description

We have a hero who is sort of an as*hole and we have a heroine who is kind and compassionate.

“Does it entertain you to make people uncomfortable all the time?”
He thought for a second. “No, it doesn’t entertain me. Other people’s discomfort is an unfortunate by-product of my ‘no bullshit’ policy. It has nothing to do with me. It has everything to do with them.”

***

“I haven’t been bored for a single second in your company, Lang. From day one, you’ve intrigued me.”

“And why does sparring with me bring you such immense joy, I wonder?”
“Why does any little boy pull a girl’s pigtails in the school yard? Why does any teenaged guy with hormones pretend to ignore the prettiest girl in school?”

I have one more criticism. Our heroine begins to read a diary, which is very important for the plot but then after a page or two, she decides not to read the rest of it. It could have clarified so many things if she had read it.

As I said before, this book could have been so much better (with a good editor, maybe???)

The letters in the book are my favorite parts as they reveal so many feelings and facts but I reiterate - I would really have liked to have had the chance of reading that diary!

Safety: It is safe... I guess :) Ask me about your triggers if you like but it was safe for me...

Writing: Dual point of view. Impressive. This would make a hell of a movie... just saying!

And, thank you so much Halime for letting me know about this amazing book :)

"Escaping him seemed impossible."

Between Here and the Horizon is a stand-alone contemporary romance with mystery and a thoroughly twisted plot!
description
"I was helplessly undone."
Ophelia Lang is a young school teacher who finds herself without a job. Her parent's restaurant is failing, and her only choice is to seek work across the country as a nanny for a wealthy family. With a lucrative financial arrangement, she packs her bags and heads to a remote island off the coast of Maine. Ronan Fletcher, her new employer, is quite attractive and caring for his two children seems like a dream job. And yet, sometimes things are not at all as they seem.

description
"Nothing touches me anymore"
As Ophelia is thrown into a world of chaos, she clings to the children that are in her care and finds security in the friendships she has formed on the island. The challenges are great, the stakes are high, and love, life, and death weigh in the balance!

description
"I couldn't take it, couldn't bear it another second longer, and yet the pain and pleasure swirling through me was all I wanted at the same time. I couldn't have told him to stop, even if I wanted to."
Told in mostly Ophelia's POV, Between Here and the Horizon was not at all what I expected it to be. I went in blind and I am so glad that I did. Certain elements of the plot left me completely blindsided. I was awestruck over the hero, and the depth of his character development was quite complex. Ophelia transformation was great and I thoroughly enjoyed her growth throughout the story. The relationships between the characters are unique and the diversity between them was quite entertaining. Certain elements of the plot were slightly predictable and yet other elements were unexpected and quite unsettling. Callie Hart is an expert when it comes to passionate writing with plenty of steam and she certainly did not disappoint. The mystery will keep you guessing with every turn of the page.

Heartbreakingly beautiful – that was this book to me! I recieved a copy and I nearly fell from excitement! I told myself that I won’t read books during my Univeristy time but this is Callie Hart and I am one weak girl when it comes to her books – sorry NOT sorry! So I picked up the book and didn’t fell asleep until 3am even though I had early morning lectures, even though I was tired, I just wanted to read. And boy, I did it!

This story is not what you expect, twists and turns on every page! My heart was hammering the whole time! I felt their emotions, I was there with them, seeing what is happening through their eyes. I always say that reading Callie’s books is like being in a movie and yet again she proved that I am right.
Outstanding, raw, real characters and plot. Perfect writing style. Action, angst, love, lust, sorrow, hurt, regret, happiness and many more things that I can relate to this book but you need to read it in order to understand what I mean. I don’t want to give in any details because where is the surprise after that?! You need to feel shocked as I was, people! You need to feel the buzzing in your head when shit hit the fan or to be hot and bothered when our boy is in action. Just wait and see and feel this book!

Thank you, Callie Hart for never letting me down when it comes to your books! If my professor asks me why I am not prepared I will have solid argument and I will strongly recommend him to go freaking buy your books AND THEN he will understand me perfectly ;)

I honestly have no clue what to say about this book without spoiling some major plot lines, so I'm just going to keep it really short. I liked all of the characters that were featured in this story and I enjoyed the small town feeling it had. Ophelia was a really good character and I thought it was great that we really got to see the strength she had throughout this story. It was also fun to see her getting used to living in a small town that didn't have much.

Overall, I would highly recommend this story and I think a lot of people will be majorly shocked when they read it, like I was. That surprise was a big reason why I enjoyed reading this book so much since it isn't often that an author can do something that really rocks my world.

Overall Opinion: Well, this is tough one to rate and write a review without ruining it. I actually went into this pretty blind, because I had just skimmed some reviews but didn't get into any spoilers -- and I'm happy I did! (I'm not going to lie though, once I hit the big shocking moment I went back and tried to see if anyone revealed anything...but everyone was pretty good at being vague). I'd recommend that anyone go into this book blind, because in truth I think being shocked was the best part! I enjoyed this book. I do wish that we experienced some more interactions and romance between the h and H, and the ending was too abrupt for my tastes -- but I did enjoy it!

**I do include some spoilers below that could effect the impact of the book, so please really consider what I said earlier before clicking on them**

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Ophelia's story. I'm going to keep this brief, because I don't want to ruin it. She has recently been laid-off and her parent's restaurant is drowning, so when she is offered to interview for a nanny/tutor job for a rich man across the country she takes it. After a not so pleasant interview, she gets the job but has to move to a remote location in Maine. When she arrives in Maine, things aren't exactly what she thought they'd be. She has to navigate her new unexpected circumstances, but she does and ends up falling in love in the meantime.

POV: This was told in Ophelia's POV.

Overall Pace of Story: Good until the end (see closure section). I never skimmed, and I thought it flowed well.

Instalove: No, they take a while in developing feelings.

H rating: 4 stars. I liked him. He was moody, rude, blunt, sweet, and sexy. A great combo for an H in my mind ;)

h rating: 4 stars. Ophelia. I liked her. I appreciated her relationship with the kids and her parents, and how she gave sass right back to the H.

Sadness level: Low/moderate. I teared up a few times, but I never needed any tissues.

Push/Pull: Yes

Heat level: Moderate/low. They don't become intimate until late in the book, so I'd definitely call this a more slow burn type heat.

Descriptive sex: Yes

Safe sex: No. I don't remember any mention of condoms, STD statuses, or previous practices for either mc.

OW/OM drama: Not really

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: Not between mcs

Separation: No, once they get together they are together.

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This was probably my biggest issue and the reason for the lower rating. I wanted more!! I'm a greedy, greedy reader! I wanted to get a full jump ahead epilogue where we experience a HEA ending. We do get a jump ahead epilogue after (what I thought was) an abrupt ending, and we do get some glimpse into their lives and happiness...But, again, I wanted more. The abruptness of the ending didn't make me (personally) feel secure that they would make it in the long run. Some readers might be just fine with calling this one a HEA, but in my mind it was a HFN ending

How I got it: It was part of my kindle unlimited subscription.

Safety: I'd say that this one would peobably be eitherSafe or Safe with exception depending on personal preferences.

Going into this story, I was 100% sure that I had everything figured by the first couple of chapters. Here I am I thinking, this is going to be a slightly emotional read with the undercurrent of something deeper lurking in the background. I had everything sorted out and I was pretty proud of myself for it but then something happened. Everything I thought I knew, just completely blew the hell up!!

I kid you not: I was like

 photo giphy_zpscqafj5ts.gif

I wasn't prepared, I stared at my my screen for a full solid minute, and after the shock wore off, I went back to re read the chapter. I KNEW I wasn't drinking around that time( I think) so the only explanation for me was quite simple: CALLIE HART LOST HER DAMN MIND!! And for that she owes me a strong drink. Wine isn't going to cut it with what you put me through for that turning point of events Callie.

"He was a man possessed. I was a woman lost. Together, we were two halves of something fragile and delicate, beautiful in it's complexity.

After going through a rough year, Ophelia Lang is looking for a fresh start to be able to help herself and her parents financially. Being interviewed in New York for a job opportunity that would make her life so much better, everything is finally starting to look up for the moment.

Moving to Maine for six months to care for a wealthy family's kids, Ophelia is looking forward to being able to help her parents with their struggling restaurant. But her first day on the job takes a completely wrong turn and the next chain of events has her wishing for a re start button.

 photo rfJO72E_zps5or7gerf.png

"Once we let this overtake us, there won't be any turning back. Is that what you want, Ophelia?"

I'm not going into further detail about this story because you have to go into this one completely blind. The only character's name you should know right now is Ophelia and how she is as a person. I really liked her as a person and I loved how strong she was in a very difficult situation. She took everything in stride and she was very loving when it was necessary.

As for the story itself, I'm not going to say that I loved every minute of it because I didn't. I wanted more to happen in the second half of the story and towards the end felt very rushed for me causing me to not quite understand everything. But what I did love was the element of suprise and this author pulled it off FLAWLESSLY. She took this story and put it in it's own category and for that alone, I applaud her appreciated that.

You want something different? Read THIS

You want to be shocked? READ IT.

I liked but not loved this book. It just never had me enthralled. I loved the beginning of the book - especially that first big and unexpected plot twist which came very early and made my heart burst into emotional flames - and felt the book had promise to be great. After that, it sort of fell apart for me. There was so much unnecessary drama that could have been avoided and the plot progression was a bit frustrating.

In my opinion, the character development was insufficient, too. Ophelia was sweet, caring, compassionate and so big-hearted. Yet, after a while she seemed to lose her edginess that I found intriguing in the beginning. Now, our hero does have potential but sadly he does not live up to the whole badass/tough soldier expectation I had in the beginning.

The one thing that bothered me most was that the story was rushed. And I mean rushed! Everything happened incredibly fast. Not only fell they in love fast, but also the arising problems are solved in a very fast manner.

I like the story in itself, but there is definitely room to improve the way it’s told. For me, this book just lacked that special it factor that it needed to get that full five star rating.

BETWEEN HERE AND THE HORIZON: As soon as I read the 'Prologue 2009-Afghanistan' where flashbacks of Ronan's time spent in Afghanistan unfolded, I swear I heard the screams of men being burnt alive, the smell of burnt flesh, the heat, the urgency of pulling out the survivors.

The Prologue broadcasts the flashbacks which occur in the story and are a vital part of the background to the secrets covered up.

Then the story jumps and takes us to the next stage of the story

Twenty-eight year old Ophelia Lang is in need of cash and fast, having lost her job as an elementary school teacher due to insufficient Government funding to helping her parents out by passing on her savings, to finding out that they are in need of dire help as their restaurant is floundering, sees her jumping on a plane to New York for an interview with the rich and powerful ex military man Ronan Fletcher, due to his wife's passing recently has him seeking a childminder to care for his two children for six months offering a hundred-thousand-dollar payout. A hundred grand would see all the problems her parents restaurant disappear.

Ophelia has just arrived on the island to take up her newly appointed position, and then a WTF moment, wow damnit to hell, I am flabbergasted, Speechless
I was not expecting that twist to come at me full force!! WOW!! That is a total game changer!! GAH!!

The ghosts of Ronan Fletcher’s past are about to turn Ophelia’s future upside down, and she can’t even see it coming.

This is so cleverly done, no sooner had I started this and there was a cliffy where a cliffy shouldn't've been as I was only a few chapters into the book, a twist no one will see coming. A twist so big it changed the whole story.

This is going to be yet another no frills review, because either way I go about writing this up will divulge so much of the story and you need to go in blind for that shock factor to have its full effect.
Once I got over my WTF did I just read moment I wasn't sure where the story was going to go from there but loved how the author spun the story.

The lonely man in the lighthouse. The tormented man living by the sea.

I must admit that when I started reading this book, I didn't start off with a very high opinion of Ophelia. At first, she came off as condescending, irrational, defensive and judgmental. It could be me, but the part where she met Ronan didn't give me a negative vibe. Only she did. It didn't seem enough to warrant her reaction or her attitude. Then BAM!! Unexpected circumstances and drama commences and although my feelings for her didn't immediately change, my interest in the story grew astronomically.

Please Note: I've read plenty of Callie Hart's books but this was my first time trying her contemporary work. So please take everything I say with a grain of salt. Read the book and form your own opinion. I didn't know what to expect other than greatness because I absolutely fell in love with her writing when I read her Blood and Roses series. I'm still a huge ho for Zeth!

"He was a man possessed. I was a woman lost. Together, we were two halves of something fragile and delicate, beautiful in its complexity."

That quote pretty much sums up the relationship that developed between Ophelia and Sully (Ronan's brother). It started off rough. Sully had a lot of residual anger and came off as brusque, cold and rude. A real jerk to be honest. But you could tell that it was all a front to keep people at a distance. Thankfully, once Ophelia got a glimpse past his mask she refused to back down or give him up or give up on him.

So although this was a departure from what I've come to expect from Callie Hart, it was no less worthy of high praise!

Go into this story blind! Simply because it's a more enjoyable experience if you know very little. Because of that, I'll keep my review short, spoiler free and plot free.

I always knew there was a reason why I loved Callie Hart. This woman can write! I mean hello, she created Zeth Mayfair! Enough said! I haven't read a CH book in quite awhile, so when I heard she was releasing a contemporary romance I jumped right on it. I didn't know what I was getting myself into, all I knew was that Callie wrote it and I wanted to read it.

From the very beginning of the story I was sucked in. It was 1:30am and I had only planned to read a chapter or two (the lies we tell ourselves lol), but before I knew it, time had gone by and I was so sucked in that when that twist happened at 20% it literally threw me! I kissed sleep goodbye at that point. One does not simply put away their kindle when a twist like that happens. I was not expecting it! I repeat; I was NOT expecting that! I whipped my head left to right, I re-read the scenes because it couldn't be? Like this can't be happening right?!

Throughout this entire book I felt like I was watching a Lifetime movie rather than reading a novel. I loved the characters, especially Ophelia and the children Connor and Amie. This story has a vague likening to Wuthering Heights, with a hint of a grown up Mary Poppins.

I really loved this story, but I couldn't give it 5 stars simply because the romance between Ophelia and the hero wasn't as developed as I would've liked. I think I wanted just a little bit more, but nonetheless, it's still a must read.

If you want a story that's entertaining, gripping, full of angst, emotional, thought-provoking then this is the perfect read for you.

~~~~~BLURB~~~~~
“You think you know me. You think you want to know me. But trust me, Miss Lang. Pursuing me will be the worst mistake you ever make. I’m broken beyond repair...
...and I take great pleasure in breaking everyone else around me.”
Ophelia Lang needs money, and she needs it bad. Her parent’s restaurant is going under, and ever since she lost her job teaching third grade elementary, scraping enough cash together to pay the bills has proven almost impossible. Her parents are on the brink of losing their home. The vultures are circling overhead. So when Ophelia is offered an interview for a well-paid private tutoring gig in New York, how can she possibly say no?
Ronan Fletcher is far from the overweight, balding businessman Ophelia expected him to be. He’s young, handsome, and wealthy beyond all reason. He’s also perhaps the coldest, rudest person she’s ever met, and has a mean streak in him a mile and a half wide. A hundred grand is a lot of money, however, and if tolerating his frosty temperament, his erratic mood swings and whatever else he throws at her means she’ll get paid, then that is what Ophelia will do.
Her new boss is keeping secrets, though. Awful, terrible secrets.
The ghosts of Ronan Fletcher’s past are about to turn Ophelia’s future upside down, and she can’t even see it coming.
Note: Between Here and The Horizon is a brand new standalone contemporary romance novel from USA Today bestselling author, Callie Hart. Between Here and the Horizon does contain some scenes of violence and sexual content, and so is directed at audience 18+.
At 28 years old, Ophelia Lang is a divorced schoolteacher trying to help her family’s failing restaurant business. When she loses her job, she applies for a temporary position as a nanny to two young children. Upon interviewing with Mr. Fletcher, Ophelia has doubts about transferring her entire life to a remote location but the compensation for such a short time is too good to refuse. In finally meeting the children, Ophelia’s feelings start to change until the unexpected happens.
“… Sometimes you just have to risk it all in the face of uncertain odds.”
In attempting to reconcile the turn of events, Ophelia remains true to the children and tries to provide the stability they seek in a nanny. As Ophelia adapts to her new life on an island off the coast of Maine, she encounters a man that holds a key position in the children’s lives but his past keeps him at a distance. Sully Fletcher is a strong, blunt and abrasive man who tries to keep his life private from the small town population but Ophelia isn’t the type to just walk away from a challenge. When Sully starts to reveal himself, Ophelia sees a sensitive, caring, protective and selfless person who acts with his heart.
“I’ll admit I’m not the man I used to be. But you make me feel… fuck.” He stopped, growling under his breath. “You make me feel like I might be able to be that man again, the man I was…”
What ensues is how two very different people can provide solace and hope to each other. Initially, I wasn’t so sure if Ophelia was up to the task ahead of her, but she persevered and proved to be a stable person in the children’s lives. What I loved was how Sully and Ophelia had that push/pull sexual tension leading to some combustible times.
“Watch me eat your pussy. Keep those eyes on me, beautiful. I want to see your face when you fall apart for me. I want to see your eyes roll back in your head when you come.”
In this book, Callie Hart shows how putting the past to rest and taking a chance on love can open one’s heart to new possibilities. For me, Ms. Hart’s strength is writing rough and ready alpha men and she succeeded with Sully on that point. Taking departure from her action packed themed books, Between Here and the Horizon, is an emotionally driven plot that deals with a challenging event and its aftermath. There were times when I wanted to delve more into the past which would have strengthened the emotions and characters’ choices. However, the plot flowed at a steady pace and bloomed at the end due to the author’s storytelling abilities.
Overall, this book is about acceptance and finding love in an unlikely place.
This was GOOOOD. The story only kicked off at around 25% when it took a SURPRISING & UNEXPECTED turn... man, was i devouring every page after that just to find out the backstory! The writing was really good and i felt my heart palpitate as i tried to figure out the twist.
Ophelia is hard up for some money and finds a particular baby-sitting job that will pay well. Meeting Ronan Fletcher for the first time, she is taken aback by this brash, cold, broody man. After accepting the job with a heavy heart, she moves to an isolated island where Ronan lives with his children. An island holding many,many dark secrets... and it's not long before Ophelia starts freaking out and starts putting pieces together.
This book had a fantastic twist. One i certainly DID NOT expect and i think the author executed this very well. I only wish there was more. I felt the story was too fast towards the end(i kept checking how many pages i had left and was like whaaaat...already?!!) That left me feeling a little unfulfilled. The romance was easy with little to no drama/ angst. Perhaps it's just me as i prefer some angsty, gut wrenching romance but that made me knock off a star.
Overall, a definite recommendation and it goes into my Top 2016 shelf purely because of the impeccable writing and the original, unexpected plot/twist.
This was an excellent read with a ton of huge twists that will have you scratching your head and wondering what the heck is going on! I love stories like that. I was extremely impressed with Callie Hart's work in this one, and I can see how far her writing has come. Even saying that though, anything I have read of hers before I really loved too!! It is really late here right now, so I will do a review soon when I'm more alert! LOL
Still ah-mazing!
First Read: 08/08/2017
Just when Ophelia Lang thought her life couldn't get worse, it somehow did. She had just recently went through a divorce where her husband broke her heart and tried to rob her blind. Due to the failing economy, she had lost her job as a teacher. Now her parents' restaurant is going under and she can't just sit by and watch it close. At least she had been smart enough to put back 15 percent of her paycheck, but her funds are drying up. She's desperate.
Now, she's found herself on a plane flying from California to New York for a job interview. Enter Ronan Fletcher. A business tycoon that would be an attractive man if it wasn't for his sour attitude. He needs a live-in nanny for his two children. That would require Ophelia to move from sunny SoCal to a tiny island off the coast of Maine. Her parents would be devastated, but it was only for six months. The money she would earn at the end of those six months would solve a lot of their financial troubles.
Who would have thought the first 24 hours on this island would change her life forever? I sure the hell didn't!! Callie Hart, you are brilliantly twisted! Ophelia finds herself in a even bigger dilemma and is extremely torn. But she has to stick it out for the children - and for Ronan. She now has six months to mend this broken family. She will get through to him. She has no choice.
GUYS, YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK! I am so upset that I cannot talk about my favorite part of this book - because of spoilers. I am not cruel! But trust me when I say that this book is AMAZING. There are twists and turns around every page and it will grab hold of you. From the first couple of chapters, you will learn to expect the unexpected. Callie Hart blew me away with her writing.
The narrator of the audiobook was WONDERFUL! Julia Farmer is a master of accents and storytelling. I highly recommend you opt for the audio.
Between Here and the Horizon by Callie Hart is a sexy complicated love story that is interlaced with passion, second chances, and mystery. This is one of those stories where you are taken down the proverbial rabbit hole where you must read and experience every tidbit, raw emotions, and action taking place in order to understand the depth and motivations of each of the characters.
#BetweenHereAndTheHorizon
I cannot fully review this book without giving away spoilers but I will just say that Callie Hart has masterfully written a story that packs the emotional punch, suspense and romance to keep readers like myself entertained. I urge readers to go read this book BLIND with no expectation and in such you will understand the magnetic pull of why this story was bewitching. Right off the opening pages, your heart will belong to Ophelia Lang and the two kids that she has been entrusted to take care of. I love stories that portrays a strong heroine and Callie Hart truly captured that aspect when she wrote Ophelia. The writing was spellbinding. The characters were intriguing. And the story was shocking and yet beautiful. So if you are looking for a story that has angst, drama, raw emotions and mystery interwoven into a love story then this book is definitely for you.
I struggled with this story. Did I love Between Here And The Horizon? No but I enjoyed it. Some parts more than others. I'm going to start with what did work for me which was Ophelia. She was such a strong, loving and loyal woman. Towards her parents and the two children Connor and Amie she was paid to look after. Ophelia's life took a 180 when an unforeseen and WTF moment changed everything for her but she definitely stepped up and took charge. Also her friendship with Rose was a pleasure to read. She had spunk and together they had some fun times but most importantly worked well together in caring for Connor and Amie.
I didn't see the first twist coming which was pretty early on in the story and it took me very much by surprise. I had no clue where the story would go and I loved that. It was so cleverly done and caught me off guard.
I won't reveal the big twist because it has to be experienced and appreciated for its brazenness. I think my struggle with story was that I didn't connect or felt the chemistry between Ophelia and her love interest which saddened me, cause if I could then I would probably have enjoyed their relationship more.
The twist near the end wasn't that big of a surprise but the revelations from it answered all the questions I had. The story started out slow and then the second half was a little too fast paced for me. I would have liked a little more time for Ophelia and the hero to develop and grow in their relationship. The epilogue was great and I'm satisfied with how the story ended.
I'm a fan of Callie Hart and I would recommend this book cause even though it's a different Callie Hart story her writing is still flawless and not to be missed.
Between here and the horizon
I don't know what is was about this book, but it really touched me some place deep. I became so infused in it, it was beyond ridiculous. I mean the story itself was unique enough but the characters were just...so...damn...relentlessly invading. They invaded my mind, I thought about them in my sleep. The story was so moving, not in the way you may think, just in in the way that moves me, I guess. I don't think it was at all what I was expecting. I've read Calie Hart books before and I love her writing and her storytelling abilities, this was no different. It was beautiful...keep in mind, this is one hopeless romantics feelings on the subject—yet OMG!!
What you get from the blurb isn't even the half of it. This woman (Ophelia) uprooted her existence to care for the Fletcher children in hopes of saving her family business and got so much more from the experience.
Ronan Fletcher was an ass, a coward and clearly shameless. What kind of love could develop from that? Boy oh boy, something came and it wasn't the obvious. Before I was 20% in I was killed over from complete shock. Then it just got even weirder but good weird. I kind of knew where it was going after a long while but that was ok with me. Predictably is fine with me, as long as it's written uniquely—if that makes any sense.
It was such a warm and fuzzy story after you get past some of the most asinine behavior possible.
"God, loving you is the cruelest, most unkind thing I can do to you, and yet I’m going to do it anyway. Do you know what that means?”
Add in two adorable children and a wise old lady, a special town and a man with no plan that becomes a man with a plan and you've got yourself a lovely character foundation. Let's not forget Miss Ophelia Lang...she really had a heart of gold. Down right good person, inside and out.
It got romantic, in the way I like my romances. Sweet but sizzling and not over done. Not lame and corny. To the point, ya know! No pretending like what's happening, isn't happening. An aggressive man with a plan, a woman in complete denial. Too cute!
“That feeling,” he panted against my mouth. “You know that feeling, where you just can’t seem to get close enough to someone? I never really knew what people were talking about until now, Lang. I wanna…I don’t even know what I want to do. I just know that I don’t want you leaving here tonight. Even if you are sleeping in another room.”
“You’re not real,” he told me, curling a piece of my hair around his index finger. “How can you be?” “I’m pretty sure I am,” I said breathlessly. “Then why do I constantly feel like I’m underwater when I’m with you? Dreaming? Imagining every second?”
It was really special and I feel the same way I felt after reading Calico. Liked I'd discovered a hidden treasure. I believe it was Paige who's review led me to read it, so thanx hun. I truly devoured and enjoyed this one. Aww, I can still feel it. People were saying the ending was rushed, but I don't think that. My worst nightmare with a book is when the ending drags on for days and I have to skim pages for it to finally be over and for me to know what happened. I read every line of this book and the ending was perfection! No poker face:) Loved it
Ugh, this book.
I loved it.
When I already cry in the prologue, it's off to an amazing start for me! ☺
The prologue is from his POV, from the time in the military. Very sad and exciting and heartbreaking.
And then we switch to Ophelia's POV for most of the rest of the book. (with a few journal entries and war experiences thrown in here and there.)
And she's amazing. She's a little bit scared in everything life throws at her.
She's constantly afraid to be killed or mugged or to crash with a plane.
(even though that fact kind of gets lost a bit as the story develops...)
It's a bit adorable to be honest! Had she known what would wait for her on that island - she never would've left her safe bedroom in California!!! ☺☺
And Ronan. He only wants what's best for his kids, after what they've been through.
And Ophelia is what's best for them.
He just knows that she will help them heal from the pain of losing their mom....
But then this mega-huge shock-moment happens and nothing is the way it was supposed to be! But I'm trying not to spoil too much - I guess saying that was already too much. (Although it already happens around the 20% mark so it's not really a spoiler!) But please...forget I said anything! And just expect to be SHOCKED & WOWED & AMAZED & HEARTBROKEN & WTF'ED & HUH'ED!
description
I just loved this book! I couldn't put it down. You just HAVE to know what happens next.
I basically cried all through the book! Ok, not really ALL through it, but it has this sliver of sadness hanging all over it. That's probably the rainy fall season on that island, but it all feels so sad. But it's not really all sad. It's cute and frustrating and funny and sexy and suspensy and exciting and just amazing!!!!
You just want to fast forward and see how and if Ophelia will get to live happily ever after on that little island.
But of course it takes a long while for everybody to get over their pasts and start hoping for a new and better future together......
BETWEEN HERE AND THE HORIZON was such a heartbreakingly beautiful dramance!! Everyone can find their Forever-Ever-After home & family, if they only hope, fight and love enough!
description
Were there some things I didn't like? Hm, not really.... just maybe that the romance part was a bit unsatisfying. ☺ The first kiss happens around the 70% mark... I would've loved a bit more of that earlier. The story sometimes just moves along a bit too slowly.... Also, the end was a bit rushed, BUT that happens in most books :/
BUT - I really enjoyed reading it!
It'd been a while since I'd read a Callie Hart book and the series I'd read was the Blood and Roses series- so I knew she could do dark and gritty. But never had I read a more emotional, contemporary romance from her. I definately got that with Between Here and the Horizon.
On the surface, this book appears to be very similar in plot to a lot of books where there's a heroine going through tough times, needs a job, and finds that in the clutches of a rich and powerful man. Ronan Fletcher is such a man but he also harbors decades worth of secrets.
 photo 0B426388-8AB3-4587-82AC-D852158F1D5D_zpshys2svh0.jpg
Only when you read this story will you find yourself with a refreshingly different spin to the above plot- trickle fed to the reader with both the present tense and flashes from the past. What seems one way on the surface is definitely not the full picture and I found myself riveted to the story, especially towards the end when all the pieces come together in perfect fashion.
Between Here and the Horizon is a love story yet I don't feel it's the sole focus of the book. It's more of a journey for Ophelia Lang while she cares for the children of Ronan Fletcher. Of healing and family even when it's not blood relatives. Only through time does the romance creep in but I felt it a bit secondary to the suspenseful nature of the story. It's a story filled with hurt yet healing. Of second chances at love and life.
Between Here and the Horizon can be read as a standalone contemporary romance.
SPOILER FREE REVIEW.
I love crying in the rain. Because when I do, no one can hear the pain. Or see the tears streaming down my face. -Unknown-
It has been a long time where I have felt so emotional about a book. It’s hard to put into words how I actually feel about this book. Got some real soul searchin’ going on here.
For the sake of keeping things under wrap in regards to the book I won’t be naming the characters let’s just go with the heroine and the Hero.
Our heroine needs a job after losing hers as a teacher she applies for a position to look after two young children. After the interview our heroine is actually unsure whether she wants the job or not but to save her family’s restaurant she takes it and moves out to Maine, to the Causeway.
Our heroine adapts to her life for the next six months but with that twist holy shite Ms. Hart I didn’t see that coming and it took a chunk of my heart right out combined with that letter? Well bugger me, I was slayed. It stayed that way for a long time during the book. Our heroine is tested in many ways and to each one she rises to the challenge. She is strong, kind, patient, courageous, and intelligent. Well you get my drift.
Our Hero is a whole different matter. He is ornery, a hermit, he is a shattered kaleidoscope a mess of a man who up to now has been happy with the life he has been leading. He is brutally honest, fearless and did I mention ornery?
“You’re looking pretty gray. Do you think you can be cordial for a couple of minutes while I check your temperature?” “Sure. As long as you don’t try to stick a thermometer up my ass.” “I promise that, that’s the very last thing I plan on doing.”
But realizing that he wants to be more and to be seen for whom he is.
“I’m not bored,” he said slowly, his voice low. “I haven’t been bored for a single second in your company, Lang. From day one you’ve intrigued me.”
And he owns the fact that he is broken, but aren’t we all in some way? Our Hero sacrificed a lot. Gave up on something that he thought would still be there and it backfired majorly. Sometimes things are unforgiveable. But for all his flaws he is a knight with tarnished and battered armour.
Our heroine doesn’t want to be attracted to the hero but in the end how can she not. All of his flaws
are what make him who he is and well I love him. But our heroine realizes that.
He was mint and strawberry, chocolate and pistachio all rolled into one.
Once our Hero stopped being ornery he became more than likeable.
“So don’t walk away for good. I get it if you have to walk away for now. But make sure you come back, okay? This isn’t done yet and you know it.”
Based in Maine on an island filled with mystery, eeriness, and wild, rugged with a gothic vibe and surrounded by a tightknit community this has the perfect setting. A setting with a story that is un-put-down-able that makes you question everything that you are reading.
Then there are more twists and turns to come that leave me devastated, heartbroken, empty and wishing that things could be different but then we wouldn’t have witnessed something so beautiful.
This is a story that spans over years, it is dark, painful, and gritty and effects everyone.
Oddly enough the author hit the exact balance when it came to there being humorous and bantering moments and when there was a seriousness to the book which is admirable because not everyone can get that balance right.
This whole book could have gone utterly epically and hopelessly wrong but all the factors that should have caused it worked in its favor.
That 5 star read was within finger grasping but I could never fully grab on to it. Which is a crying shame. The end felt rushed to some extent. I was missing depth to their relationship. There is one important fact that I thought they should have spoken about. It seemed to be important to me.
"I haven't been bored for a single second in your company, Lang. From day one, you've intrigued me."
Between Here and the Horizon is the first book I read by Callie Hart. I did not know what to expect but I was excited to find out. The author kept me intrigued and interested throughout the whole book. After the first couple of chapters I was expecting things to go a certain way but then BOOM something happened that shocked me so much. I 100% did not see that coming, what a crazy plot twist it was. I love it when authors are able to surprise and have me wanting more.
"I'll admit I'm not the man I used to be. But you make feel like I might be able to find that man again."
Ophelia Lang needs money and takes a job as caretaker/nanny/tutor. I love these type of stories a lot and I just knew I was going to enjoy this one as well. I wasn't wrong! Ophelia was very likable and mature, I loved that the characters were in the their late 20s/early 30s. She was protective, sweet and loyal. She was so great with the children, I really loved those scenes. As for the other character, he was pretty mean, rude and needed some attitude adjustments. He wasn't really likable at the beginning, but I slowly started to understand where he was coming from. Just like Ophelia I couldn't help but care for him.
This story has some sad parts that had me crying. I loved that we had a couple of short flashbacks to understand what was going on. For me however the ending was rushed. Before I knew it everything fell perfectly in place and I was reading the epilogue. I was missing some last bit of development in the relationship. Also I wasn't ready to say goodbye just yet, I think a chapter or two would've worked better for me. But overall a very solid romance story, with great writing from the author. I enjoyed the plot a lot and found it to be refreshing. This will definitely NOT be the last book I'll read by the author.
4 Stars!
This one started off kind of slow for me and then it was jammed packed the second half. I really did like it but I hate to say I didn't feel the connection between these two. I'm still rating it 4 stars because not once did I roll my eyes or think about not finishing it. I've been in a terrible book funk so for me that's a plus!
I had my thoughts around 30% and I wanted to go hunt for spoilers to see if I was right. I'm proud to say I didn't go look. lol My thoughts were correct though. lol
I loved the banter between these two and thought Rose and the kids were awesome! Glad they all got their HEA at the end!
Can't wait for more from Callie! Love her books:)
Even though I was ready for something to happen in this book I was still not ready for that.
DON'T READ ANY SPOILERS!!!
So this was a very very shocking plotline.
Things I didn't like; heroine...
And there are certain aspects of this story that just weren't working for me. But mainly heroine. Not even her love for gin and tonic could save her. Nope.
I loooved the asshole hero.
Yes, I am weird like that.
This is a lovely story, but I was predicting correctly what was happening before half of the story.
However the first 20%? The shock was real.
Somehow though, it wasn’t as good as I was hoping for, probably because the lack of depth, I don’t really feel the angsts, which I should with a storyline like this.
Nonetheless, it’s a good read!:)
Please excuse me as I make sure my heart is no longer in pieces…...
The way this story builds up is nothing but true perfection. You fall in love with each word they say to each other. Out of hatred or out of love, it doesn’t matter. You are enthralled in this journey with them wondering what the hell is really going on sometimes, as if you are missing something and just waiting for it to happen.
Sully & Lang:
 :
Nothing is better than two people hating each other and avoiding each other in every way just to find themselves in each others company far to much and learning their inner workings even though they find each other insufferable….It's seriously the BEST!!!!
Sully is pretty much the biggest jerk you will ever meet. So of course you are going to love him. You can’t help yourself. At one point I literally looked ahead to see when we was coming back into the picture because I just wanted to read about him again(NO I did NOT skip ahead, I just had to know when I could read about his hotness again!)
I needed him. I wanted him more than I’d ever wanted anybody, and I couldn’t wait any longer.
Lang. Whew. I just lover her. She wasn’t anything specactular. She wasn’t the heroine that made a great impression or was submissive. She was just Lang. And all the little pieces that made her up, made her a character that was worth while! When I was reading her POV it was like we were sitting down for tea and she was just telling me her story. Lang is beautiful.
Words cannot express the love I now hold and cherish for this book. I find Callie Harts writing so deep that it tears me open, rips my heart out and then puts me back together. I love that she writes a story, where the people are so real that I find myself thinking about them days later wondering what they are doing and if they are fighting or fucking. It is not just about the romance. She captures my heart with the story. She wins me every time, and this book is just another explain of her expertise and skills!
