Spice and Wolf is ten years old! To commemorate this notable event, Yen Press is producing a lavish tome collecting all seventeen original volumes of Spice and Wolf. Beautifully bound and impressively designed to give the impression of a medieval manuscript, the book will also include all of illustrator Jyuu Ayakura's original illustrations. This book will be the crown jewel in any collector's library! The light novel series' story centers around the travels of the merchant Kraft Lawrence, who strikes a deal with the wolf god Holo that sees him transporting the homesick goddess back to her remote northern homeland. Uniquely exploring medieval trade, commerce, and religion, Lawrence plies his trade with Holo (in both human and wolf form) often becoming a decisive factor in his endeavors, but in the end, it is the story of these two memorable characters and their relationship to one another.
I find it hard to describe why I love spice and wolf so much. The stories are not particularly well written, the plots are often a little simplistic and the dialogue can sometimes be lacking. But, despite all that, whenever I read spice and wolf I always end up with a smile on my face and a happy feeling that lasts for hours after I put the books down. Charming is how I would describe this series and I couldn't recommend it enough.
I have a soft spot for comics about economic systems and other nutty gritty how stuff works details in fantasy settings. Spice & Wolf is set in a time where trading is growing in power in a medieval setting and the plot, when it isn’t concerned with the budding romance between a traveling merchant and a wolf god, delves deep into how people in olden times dealt with unsafe trade routes, competing currencies, and the manipulation of pricing for goods and services.
