Fernando García de Cortázar y Ruiz de Aguirre es un sacerdote e historiador español. Galardonado con el Premio Nacional de Historia 2008, es catedrático de Historia Contemporánea de la Universidad de Deusto y director de la Fundación Vocento.

Colabora en varios medios nacionales y sus obras destacan por un uso sencillo y literario del lenguaje, logrando explicar la Historia de forma amena y para todos los públicos.

En 2008 recibió el Premio Nacional de Historia por su obra Historia de España desde el Arte.

The book tries to present the full history of spain in around 700 pages, from pre-history to the late 80s. Though it is easy reading and more or less covers every important event, my final impression is not very good. It runs through the timeline without necessary information, as if the reader should now before hand who fought in a specific battle, who was main advisor in such period ... (eg).

On the other hand it lacks of a clear train of thoughts, jumping from economical to social to natural and back to economical argumentation without stating clearly the point to show.

The view of the 20th century is openly biased, whith explicit criticisms to the socialist goverment of the 80-90s and the nacionalist/separatist movements along the century.

I read it to identify an interesting period of the History of Spain to start reading about and for that it made its job. Nothing else. Not too recommendable.

No es un libro para no-iniciados y es poco didáctico. Después de haberlo leído, me da la sensación de que no he colmado muchas de las lagunas que tengo en este campo. Quizás en vez de "Breve Historia de España", me convendría leer "Historia de España para torpes".

Su mediana densidad desaconseja otorgarle el estatus de "lectura de cama".
Es muy interesante, para gente que sepa sobre el tema y para los que acaban de aterrizar en suelo español.
No he encontrado otro texto, hasta la fecha, que abarque desde los Neanderthales hasta los primeros años del siglo XXI, con la misma maestría.

A pesar de que una parte del libro me ha parecido interesante, he tenido que bajarle mucho la nota por los últimos capítulos, que son un delirio aznarista bochornoso. El blanqueamiento de los gobiernos del PP y las difamaciones a sus oponentes parecen más escritas por un director de campaña que por un historiador serio.

Demasiado condensado y desordenado. Trata brevemente los hechos y supone, en muchos casos, un conocimiento previo de los acontecimientos. No lo recomiendo para iniciarse en la historia de España, sólo para repasar y refrescar datos.
Según la publicidad, es el libro de historia más vendido de este país, lo cual me induce a pensar que los españoles no leemos los libros que compramos, dada la velocidad a la que se describen los hechos y lo arduo de algunos capítulos (los dedicados a la economía, por ejemplo). Dicho esto, quien lo tenga a mano que lo lea, siempre aprenderá o reforzará sus conocimientos.
Aspectos positivos: los mapas y apéndices de monarcas, fechas, el índice de términos.
Mi edición llega hasta Felipe González por lo que el sesgo aznarista que algunos comentan afortunadamente no lo he catado.

Es un libro que , como he leído en otra critica, no colma lo que buscaba en una breve historia de españa. Es significativo, que de las 720 páginas que tiene mi edición. Mas de 120 páginas estén dedicadas a los últimos 40 años.

El libro se centra en la agricultura y la autonomía con mucho detalle, dejando hechos significativos e históricos relevantes en el olvido. Es verdaderamente complicado hacer una breve historia de España.

Es un libro no ameno, en mi opinión, de leer. Las evolución por segmentos hace, a veces, difícil seguirlo. Analiza la economía o la agricultura y cuando pasas de página, cuando se centra en la corona, de retrotrae 100 años hacia atrás.

Me pareció mucho mejor, y más recomendable, Biografía de una Nación de Fernández Álvarez.

Es el primer manual de historia de España con el que me meto. Es un peso pesado, estructural y sintácticamente. Sin duda rico, pero de difícil alcance para un guiri como yo falto de cultura académica. A buscarle otra pega, diría que se concentra demasiado en los últimos años dejando al descubierto mucha historia antigua, pero tal vez esto sea cuestión de gustos.

Историята на Испания е наистина забележителна. Книгата попълни някои пропуски в знанията ми за тази държава... и за съжаление не хвърли светлина върху други, въпреки че се очакваше. Онова, което не ме допадна бе факта, че някои от най-значимите факти са просто бегло споменати, а други и толкова не са. За колониацията на двете Америки - този забележим момент, както в испанската, така и в световна история - напрактика не е споменат. Същото е независмосттта на новите държави в Северна и Южна Америка - отново нищо.
Авторите изследват огромна материя - военно дело, народно стопанство, минно дело, търговия, литература, култура, религия, поземлени отношения и какво ли още не. По този начин обърква читателя и разкъсва вниманието му между множество теми.
И все книгата си струва да бъде прочетена, защото трудно ще се намери на пазара толкова мащабно историческо изследване, събрано само между две корици.

Me gusto mucho este libro; ya que muy resumidamente te explica la historia de España desde sus primeros pobladores como su complejo mestisaje, su reuinificación, glorias y fracasos. Me llama especialmente la atención como termina " España al socaire de las concepciones idiomáticas, aparece como el único país de Unión Europea que en los últimos años, ha adoptado políticas culturares dirigidas a erosionar su comunidad lingustíca".

Un relato completo de la historia de España, desde los tiempos más antiguos hasta la actualidad.

Impacta percatarse como las continuas guerras destruyeron enormes riquezas de la corte que se habían amasado por la historia familiar de la realeza y por la posesión de las vastas colonias.

This is one of the very few books which I started reading, but am giving up part way through without an intention of finishing the book. A Brief History of Spain is indeed a brief history, because with so much content to cover for a region with as much recorded history as Spain, you cannot spend too much time on any one subject or give more than a few sentences to any one character. (Especially in the early history.) The rapid pace of the book does, however, lead to it being incredibly dense as you fly through the epochs, and the final result is still over 700 pages long.

I made it 126 pages through the book but with my level of Spanish language comprehension, the fact that the entire book is in Spanish leads to my pace of moving through it being quite slow. (This is also combined with the fact that I keep myself busy doing many other actitivies I enjoy, so the time I am dedicating to actually reading the book is also sporadic.) Ever since adulthood, I maintain a loose policy with myself to only read one book at a time, so marching through this book has really been hindering me from moving on to read anything else with my limited time here in Spain, and that's another big reason I'm choosing to end the book here.

I'm glad that I got to learn what I did about Spanish history from this tome. (I successfully completed all of the sections on pre-history, the Phoenicians, and the Roman period just before the Visigoths arrive on the scene.) I wouldn't know what periods I was missing if I tried to just pick random historical items to learn on my own. However, one of the few things I did not enjoy about this book was that the two authors spent a lot of time listing out rather mundane facts about geography, ancient trade statistics, and materials used in ancient production of goods that I think could have been space better used to communicate a more interesting and cohesive story. I know that these sorts of statistical facts are important, and provide critical context to the period you are reading about, but when you're compiling a brief history of a country essentially written for lay people, I think it's important that you utilize the space appropriately to not accidentally fall into only listing out statistics without saying much else about a period.

Overall, this book a decent read, provided you (A) speak Spanish, (B) are very interested in history and (C) have a lot of time on your hands. Your enjoyment of the book will be impacted related to those three factors.

Not the best history book for readers who don't have a basic knowledge of the theme. Too much unexplained references to people and events that should be exposed to the neophyte. Lack of chronological order - late chapters covering 100 years each with go back and forth movements at the authors discretion. All the book seems like a treaty on how to invent a country named Spain from a myriad of peoples, territories and cultures. Maybe that's why they could make such an history with less than two handful references to Portugal... Lots of quality work spoiled by the clear political objective of the writers.

Lacks a lot of basic intro, so impossible to follow without a solid intro knowledge about the Spanish history; disturbingly right-wing, e.g. when referring to the colonial policies and getting into deranged PP propaganda.

Buena síntesis de la Historia de España. En esta versión se han actualizado los últimos capítulos de la historia del s. XXI, siendo una magnífica expresión de la decadencia actual.
