This book was very informative. My 2nd grader requested I read it, but there was some gory illustrations that they didn’t like seeing.

A beautifully written and illustrated account of the lives, migration, and eventual extinction of the woolly mammoth.

Skirts topics such as evolution such that I think few would raise argument against the book from either side of that debate.

Touches on death in several places.

There's some legit gore in here and I was not expecting that. Thankfully, I flipped past it too quickly for Tot to notice. It does make sense for a historic hypothesis to discuss hunting. But it seems like a lot for a children's picture book. I did like the illustrations overall. I also appreciate that the book draws attention to the fact that we don't actually know much for sure about mammoths, even if it does save it until the last page. We have to stop teaching our kids this stuff like it's fact. Maybe there were some mammoths, that's what we know.

For squeamish people, some of the drawings would probably not be appreciated. Otherwise, this book is well written and drawn. I learned about other elephant-like animals that also went extinct and the elephants that are alive today. It was interesting to learn about what the peoples did with the the mammoth remains after their hunts. Resources were valuable, so they did not waste what their efforts obtained.

This is definitely not a book for a beginning reader and should only be read by semi advanced readers- as it was dense, and confusing

Copyrighted in 1977 and 1996 this title continues to stand the test of time. The illustrations have the prehistoric and cave living representation throughout the title. The text is spare in words, but those words and sentences are very descriptive of mammoths and their importance to the the lives of the cave dwelling peoples. Page 14 and 15 has a great Infograph comparing various species of mammoths and elephants. One even learns tools and living style of the cave dwellers. Included also is an illustration to cave paintings. Most interesting was a fact cited below an illustration that a Mammut Mastodon was found in Newark, Ohio in 1989.
This picture book format of a nonfiction subject is full of information and a great place to begin the study of life in prehistoric times.

I think this book was really good.and good to know that people used to kill or hunt mammoths down for many different reasons.also showed pictures of different kinds of mammoths and elephant that i never knew of.now because people had hunted them down, they no longer live.I also recommend because it's good to know if you don't know much in the past.

What can I say? It did have a fair amount of information. I don't think anything more than the kids already knew though.
