I have been through 2 or 3 of these things. From way back when I was a CNA until I finished my nursing degree. I still read it from time to time to keep refreshed. My husband now uses it for nursing school. It makes learning all those tricky words fun and easy.
Why is this book called Anatomy and Physiology? There is almost no anatomy. The anatomical information is often erroneous (e.g., no one thinks the stomach is a "gland," even though it secretes things. The parathyroid glands are not large, but certainly way bigger than "a grain of rice") - and this makes me question how factual the physiology information is. I checked this book out to try to learn a little physiology while I try to learn enough biochemistry to help understand what is wrong with my brain (long covid, dysautonomia).
The book is designed so that it can be read casually, with highly technical details separated into concise sections that can be skipped if not needed. For people informed about the subject then it can act as a refresher and easy reference. This practical approach makes the book a sure hit. They deliver on what they promise exactly. Just by reading the introduction you will know if this book is for you or not.
Wonderful journey through human body with great sense of humour and attention for interesting or vital details. This book is very helpful and suitable for anyone that wants to find a stimulating way to learn about our body. Thank you Erin, it was a pleasure to read this, looking forward to rereading it in the future!
I read this book without any formal physiology background (indeed I was a perfect dummy in Anatomy and Physiology) and this book definitely lived up to its name.
The market is not very kind to layman interested in learning new subjects. Very Short Introductions series attempt to render them both academic and accessible but their authors usually mistake very short for concise; concise for condensed; condensed for indigestible. The Dummies series takes the other end of the spectrum, condescendingly viewing readers as dummies.
Reading about anatomy and physiology is interesting insofar as it explains how and why our body succeed to function with such amazing mechanisms. Sometimes I wonder that we ask the wrong question. Instead focusing on why we get sick and die, we should focus on why we can live and survive so long.
Anatomy and Physiology for Dummies is a serviceable overview of this complex subject. Materials are obviously diluted but generally more accessible than the Very Short Introductions series. One flaw is the simplistic diagrams which lack labelings and names of the body parts the main body refers to. I need another atlas of body to supplement them.
I am an engineer, so I really do not know much about Anatomy, and as the title suggest a dummy :-) The book is not a simple read and it did take me a while to go through it, but it did worth it. The concepts are complicated, and a lot of sections walked me through what is still an active area of research. Now, I understand why I need to be super careful with my body and all the complications that chemicals and medications would cause and how they heal. The book also explains some differences between humans and animals which was also very helpful for me.
Peak book. The book accomplishes its goal of educating the somatically uneducated. It has the perfect balance of depth and information without getting too jargony for normal peopleto follow.
