Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock KBE (1899-1980) was an iconic and highly influential film director and producer, who pioneered many techniques in the suspense and thriller genres.

Following a very substantial career in his native Britain in both silent films and talkies, Hitchcock moved to Hollywood and became an American citizen with dual nationality in 1956, thus he also remained a British subject.

Hitchcock directed more than fifty feature films in a career which spanned six decades, from the silent film era, through the invention of sound films, and far into the era of colour films. For a complete list of his films, see Alfred Hitchcock filmography.

Hitchcock was among the most consistently recognizable directors to the general public, and was one of the most successful film directors during his lifetime. He continues to be one of the best known and most popular filmmakers of all time.

A collection of short stories which have the Alfred Hitchcock seal of approval as they are scary, bizarre, have a last minute twist, or are memorable for some other small thing. I found the last one most unsettling as the author of a story of space travel seems to have a black/white view of things and doesn't consider all the other options as to the end of the story. It seems to have the humanity drained out of it and presents the world (the universe) as a brutal, dark and unforgiving place. This would not be the ending if this was a made for TV show or a movie. I have trouble figuring out who the hero is in this tale. So I tell myself that there are other options which were not considered. I imagine you could also make up a better ending to this story. The book was put out long ago, so I think there is less of a fear of space travel and more other stories now that would give a chill.

A nice collection of stories. I got this book to read one story in particular - The Cold Equations, the final story in the collection. I felt The Cold Equations was the strongest story of the collection; I would give that story 4 stars.

These stories are a combination of mystery and sci-fi. I would not call them horror stories myself as they are not scary for the most part. The sense of horror is more chilling than scary.

This collection of stories was really a mixed bag for me. A couple were duds, but the ones I enjoyed are the reason I’m rating this book 4 stars, instead of three.

My highlights were as follows:

The Billiard Ball by Issac Asimov
A sci-fi mystery with much to love. Rivalry, zero gravity, billiards, …Murder??

The Bitter End by Randall Garrett
A murder mystery set in a hotel bar with wizards and healers! This one was very fun and really scratched my fantasy itch

A Year In A Day by Erle Stanley Gardner
A serial assassin(?) mystery that I won’t go into much detail about, because the twist, and what follows, are very entertaining.

Rest in Pieces by W. T. Quick
A game of cat and mouse between a thief and a sentient bomb!

Lot No. 249 by Arthur Conan Doyle
An Oxford medical student notices strange and dangerous occurrences happing around his downstairs neighbor, who happens to own a mummy

Confession by Algernon Blackwood
A man with PTSD gets lost in the London fog

The Cold Equations by Tom Godwin
A cold sci-fi tale about accepting mortality, whether it’s fair or not, expected or not.
