I won a copy of The New Healing Herbs from a Goodreads Giveaway.
This is a comprehensive, well researched, extremely helpful guide in herbal remedies complete with full informative descriptions on the most popular (and not so popular yet still essential).
Each herb's diverse methods of healing are further broken down into categories that include Therapeutic Uses, RX Possibilities and Intriguing Possibilities plus many others.
No surprise, my favorite herb is chocolate.
There is also an incredibly useful handy dandy reference guide at the end of the book that categorizes what ailments you may currently be suffering from and what herbs are most beneficial to help alleviate what ails you.
Even if you're not interested in herbal remedies, this book is great to read just for the fascinating historical anecdotes and fun facts about herbs you have heard of and many others you have not.
Michael Castleman has done a fantastic job researching and detailing herbal lore and properties. This fourth edition is a great book for anyone needing info pertaining to herbs. From A to Z, this book tells the healing history and therapeutic uses for each herb plus gardening and harvesting tips are included in each plant section. This will be a wonderful addition to your herbal bookshelf and you will find yourself using this time and time again. Thank you to Rodale and Goodreads Giveaway for this book.
The book presents a wide array of information on many herbs. I had two issues with the book. Several herbs were touted to reduce cholesterol. I need cholesterol. Why would I want to reduce it? Also, there were suggestions to consult a doctor in certain cases. However, medical doctors are not trained in herbal medicine, so why would I consult one? An herbalist would be more appropriate .
This book is amazing and is chalk full of information. From growing tips, to medical uses and interactions with pharmaceutical medications this has it all. I just docked a star because the glossary seemed to have some discrepancies that didn't correlate with the text. But it's a good book overall
My favorite herbal remedy reference. For a guide this large and comprehensive, it's impressively written by one man. Each herb/fungus has a clear and fascinating profile considering it's history, chemical property, and safe-use guidelines with instruction. I read through this thing like a book though, it reads like a bunch of short stories for me, each herb with a history to tell.
It includes a quite vast "cure-chart" at the back, which is simple and easy to use. All in all, this is one of my favorite reference books. I wish I had the foresight to purchase it in hardcover, my paperback isn't going to last forever and I need it!!
Packed full of natures healing remedies and covers the therapeutic benefits of familiar herbs such as ginkgo, St. John's wort, lemon balm, aloe and parsley. Not too technical.
