Wonderful new series! I think I enjoyed Linger 2 even better than the wonderful first book. Our trio is hot on the trail of the murderous beast when a broken water pump strands them in a small town in Alabama. Things are not what they appear in this sleepy town.It takes Christopher's gathering skills to fight against the evil lurking here. This is a must read book!
Book two of the Linger series, Trail of the Beast, takes off and never stops, beginning with page one, when ex-detective Kate Messenger joins her two friends in order to chase a murderer. The three characters unite in the pursuit of the 'Beast', a name they branded the killer of their loved ones. Avenging her mother’s murderer, Kate joins a strange blind clairvoyant boy named Christopher and a man named Noah Weston—together they follow the trail left by a little girl named Lucy, who through mental telepathy communicates with the boy Chris. The setting is a small town in Alabama, Singer, and the reason for its name is eerie enough to have them turn around. The heroes, confronted with unusual circumstances, seek the assistance of the local Catholic priest, Morales. The main plot—to chase down the beast, soon becomes a game of hide and seek, and set ups. The twisted becomes even more bizarre as paranormal activity of a nearby river intertwines with the forces that they are already dealing with. Like book one, the story reads smoothly and is so suspenseful that I could not stop reading, riveted to every word. The relationship between the three companions is explored, as well as the interaction with the new people they meet, and feels genuine. The storyline compels the reader into the heart pounding fear for them all, as they are literally running for their lives, almost scared to death. The protagonists learn that together they will succeed but only if they trust each other. I am looking forward to reading the next book. This book is filled with great suspense, great character development, and a very eerie and scary story.
Linger 2: Trail of the Beast brings back Kate Messenger, Noah Weston and the blind psychic empath teen Christopher, together in Alabama where the author Edward Fallon takes us on their hunt for The Beast, an entity whose sole mission is to deliver evil and prey upon the innocent by invading and trying to destroy a person's soul. The author not only expands upon each of the main character's drive to pursue this beast, but also invites us in to know more about their goodness, beautiful sense of family and desire to save each other, which makes us admire their strength and care for them immensely. New and fascinating characters are also brought into the story that make us question, whom can we ultimately trust to be truly good. This is one terrific book. Beautifully written prose and rich with detail where we are taken on a massively scary ride into the world of one of the most horrific forces of evil to grace a supernatural thriller novel, The Beast himself.
Linger 2: Trail of the Beast begins with Kate Messenger quitting her job as a police detective and catching up with Weston and Christopher on the road. When Weston's Rambler breaks down they find themselves stuck in a small town in Alabama. They know the Beast has been here and soon realize he may still be closer than they think. They also face another threat from a different Beast that resides in the river there. This beast desperately wants Christopher.
Linger 2 will not disappoint readers and will leave one anxiously awaiting Linger 3. I've read many book series where the 2nd book just didn't live up to the first but this certainly is not the case with Linger 2. I couldn't read this one fast enough and am looking forward to Linger 3. I cannot wait to find out where the Trail of the Beast will take us next.
This is the second volume in the new Linger series of supernatural thrillers. Happily, the publisher is releasing five volumes simultaneously on July 1, so those of us with a tendency to binge-read series have a lot to be happy about. I was fortunate enough to gain access to Advanced Reader's Copies of all five, and I'm happy to review all of them.
This novel sets the pattern for the series, after the first book established the setting. (I did a review of that one as well.) Weston, Kate, and Christopher attempt to track the Beast, a serial killer who has impacted all of their lives. They are led by some combination of actual clues to the killer's activities and psychic or supernatural instinct. In this installment, Kate has followed Weston and Christopher to Alabama, where Weston's archaic but beloved Rambler breaks down as the gang appear to be closing in on the Beast somewhere in the back of beyond.
This becomes the first truly supernatural story in the Linger series. The Beast shows the first signs that he has serious paranormal abilities of his own, and a local legend soon proves to be both real and extremely dangerous.
The writing is solid and the pacing is very well done. The characterization of the protagonists and the more important secondary characters is well done. The series avoids the trap of having Mary Sue protagonists; in fact, Weston is kind of a jerk. His backstory is fairly horrible, so you can understand why he's as angry as he is, and sympathize with it to some extent, but the net result is a plausible tension between him and Kate. He has an almost irrational dislike of the police, which Kate used to be, and he resents Kate's insertion into his partnership with Christopher. Kate just resents being resented.
Most of Weston's resentment of the police comes from, in his backstory, being suspected of the murders of his family that were actually committed by the Beast. Things are not helped by the fact that Weston and Kate are investigated by local law enforcement when weird things start happening. Unfortunately there are times in this series where it seems like there are two kinds of police officers: Kate and stooges. This is a bit of a well-worn trope and a bit disappointing considering the quality of almost everything else about the novel. All of the other minor characters are so well-drawn, that it seems a shame to let the police act like extras from "The Dukes of Hazzard" simply so they can serve as foils of the protagonists.
The climax ends a little abruptly, but it makes complete sense the way it is written and I can't think of any way to improve on it. Trail of the Beast is, if anything, more enjoyable than the first book, and I highly recommend it.
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review
Trail of the Beast picks up right where the first book (Dying is a Wild Night) left off and jumps right into the action. We find Weston, Kate, and Christopher stranded in a small Alabama town where The Beast may have been recently.
Trail of the Beast is less of a whodunit (as Dying is a Wild Night was) and is more of an action/suspense, but I found it an equally satisfying book. It’s action packed and fast paced. The supernatural elements are well done and presented in a believable way. Trail of the Beast even includes a cool ghost story which has its basis in mythology. All my favorite stuff.
One of the best things about this book, in my opinion, was its sense of place. Stuff like the mention of Cheerwine and how sweet and ikcy Southern iced tea tastes to non-Southerners helped set the scene and make it feel real.
The best compliment I can give this book (and the series so far) is I wouldn’t mind paying to read it. Both the storytelling and the editing are top notch and worth the asking price.
In LINGER 2: Trail of the Beast, the gripping story continues with Kate, Noah and Christopher in their quest to track down the “Beast.”
The Beast is manipulating their journey in a desperate effort to lure the young boy (Christopher) into his deadly claws. The Beast uses innocent people to accomplish his goal, making the lives of the people who reside in a small town in Alabama miserable and deadly.
As Kate and Noah race to not only stop a tragedy, they have to deal with legal conflicts involving Christopher.
In this riveting instalment, the trio also face another mysterious entity, adding more edge-of-your-seat layers of suspense and intrigue, with an emotional backstory.
As with the first book in the series, the plot, characters and psychological suspense will captivate you. The twists and interaction with the secondary characters will keep you turning the pages.
The book starts with Kate hitting the road to catch up with Weston and the boy Christopher. Yay there's a sequel to Book 1. Just your every day drive until the Rambler breaks down and the 3 have to stay with a local priest in the town of singer. Add a little faith, a little sex mmm hot but quick forbidden sex, paranormal and psyco killer and you've got a lot going on. Definitely exciting. Couldn't put the book down.
Book 2 finds our trio on the trail of The Beast and stranded in a small town in Alabama where their unique talents lead them to yet another horrific killing. Very well written and fast paced, leaves you wanting more. Unlike some series the second instalment is just as good if not a bit better than the first. A must read!
This was another great story in this series. It's always something of a surprise to me that I like these books as I'm no sci-fi fan in the least. However, for me, they stay just this side of believability enough for me to like them as much as I do. This one features the same characters as book one so you really do need to have read that first as they're on a continuation of their quest to find a killer. He's always just a step ahead of them, though. I'll definitely be reading book 3. An aggravation in this was the author's tendency to keep using the characters' surnames then switching back to their first names. There were hardly any errors, though. Lighted was used and not lit and animate instead of animated, you was dropped from a sentence in one place and this paragraph was totally contradictory-"The only furniture was an old wooden table bolted to the floor. Most of the paint had peeled off of it and off the pair of rickety wooden chairs bolted down on either side of it"......I noticed a couple of apostrophe errors but that was it. Nothing really appalling.
In part 2 of the Linger series, Kate Messenger quits her job as a police officer and heads off to find Chris and Noah. They find themselves stuck in Alabama due to car trouble, and while waiting for their car to be repaired, find a lot more than they bargained for.
Edward Fallon has developed a riveting tale of suspense and horror in the Linger series. The action begins on page 1 and doesn't let up. The Beast is horrific, the characters well defined, and the settings outlined perfectly, without being wordy.
I really can't wait to begin book 3. Horror fans or those just looking for a dark thriller will love this series.
The first book I could not put down. This one is not as compelling until the end. I still don't like Kate and Noah. I think Fallon is slowly moving them toward some kind of romance. This makes me impatient - not because I want them to hurry up and get there but because it is so cliche.
The resolution of the Siren-in-the-river subplot required a greater suspension of disbelief than the rest of the book. But it was satisfying, so no points lost.
This book did not seem as well written (or maybe edited?) as the first one and that was disappointing.
Nevertheless, I am sticking with Christopher through at least the next book in the series.
The second in the Linger series continues the fascinating story of now ex-cop Kate Messenger's quest to find her mother's killer, with the help of her victim companions, Noah Weston and the strange empathic boy named Christopher. Excellent writing, compelling characters and enough action to please any thriller fan. Keep it coming, Edward Fallon!
I bought the second book because I enjoyed the first book in this series. I hoped that the second book would resolve the problems but sadly it did not and I didn’t wish to continue reading the same story, just with new people added to make the story tick along
If the first book in Edward Fallon’s “Linger” series was like a kiss that promised more, “Linger 2: Trail of the Beast” is like that “talk” after the first few dates.
You know the “talk” — the one where you begin to hash out what you can expect out of this relationship, and where it will lead.
“Linger 2” lets us know that our heroes face an evil that is not bound — neither by physical limits nor typical thriller expectations.
In “2,” former detective Kate Messenger finds herself on the road — compelled by her own curiosity and history and more — to follow Noah Weston and psychic empath "tween” Christopher in their crusade to confront a dark, deadly and mysterious entity, a serial killer known only as “The Beast.”
And while the plot moves us forward in that pursuit, it also deftly adds in the motives and history of this unlikely trio, much in the same agile fashion the first book in the series.
We find that as much as the “Beast” torments souls, this Quixotic threesome were already dealing with demons that drive them beyond the need to find and end the evil and pain left in their elusive, murderous quarry’s wake.
Sometimes, the need to fill in gaps and flesh out back story can stall a book’s momentum. But in “Trail of the Beast” it serves to propel readers, because it explores the threesome's growing relationship and the trust they must nourish to succeed.
We get to see the scars, and not just how they were formed, but also how they have made them who they are. While Messenger and her unexpected spiritual connection to Weston and his young charge were the focus in the first book, we learn more about Weston, his personal stake, and even his devotion to the broken down Rambler they drive.
It is the struggles of that vehicle — old, dusty and dented, a lyrical reflection of its owner — in the second book that takes the trio to an isolated outpost of Alabama. Singer is more a wide spot in the road than a real place, and Fallow introduces us to enough characters (and those individual stories) to provide a solid flavor for the place.
In this out-of-the-way place, they find they have stumbled across the “Beast” — though, finally, the feeling evolves until it seems this crossing of paths is more than happenstance. And, in that, we learn more about Lucy, the young empath under the control of the “Beast” but connected closely emotionally and in "gifts" with Christopher.
Stories mixed in with the plot — like the moral conflicts of the small town’s priest and his forbidden feelings for his housekeeper, a simple soul burdened by an unstable husband who is tormented and tortured by the “Beast” and eventually enveloped in the tangle of bizarre paranormal activity centered around a nearby river — serve to add a depth to both the the chase and the overall tale.
Smartly written and paced, “Linger 2: Trail of the Beast” not only moves this series forward, it also lets us know what we can expect as this "relationship" begins to blossom.
Wow! Another thrilling and wonderfully suspenseful story. I was hooked on the first book after reading the first page and the same can be said for this book in the series. While reading I felt I was right there with the characters as if watching a movie. The dynamic of the trio of Kate, Noah, and Chris really gel well; like pieces to a puzzle that just fit. I’ve read a few thrillers this year that were written by authors with derivative writing styles and lacking the finesse that Edward Fallon has shown in these Linger books. I’m looking forward to reading books 3 and 4 soon.
I appreciate that he didn’t create a female character who is suppose to be strong and bright when we first meet them but as the story goes on somehow always ends up as being fool or lacking common sense. So many female characters written by men start off strong and then end up sounding like they are too weak and foolish to figure things out, especially the obvious, on their own and can only get there because of a man or dumb luck. Edward Fallon does none of those things with Kate. He makes her flawed and human but not foolish and incapable. He gives her wit, strength, drive, and compassion.
In this book we get to know more about Noah and his past and what he lost and how it has shaped him to who is now. These revelations make it easier for Kate and the reader to find a soft spot of the man, compassion. Then there is Christopher, the boy with the eerie talent, who is just a child who has gone through so much. His quiet strength and determination mask the vulnerability and fear. And we learn that Christopher is hiding a secret about Lucy all along. This is a fantastic read and I can’t wait to recommend it to any of my friends and family that may be interested in the genre.
This is the second book in a series in which a telepathic blind boy, a former female police officer and a man who shares being family members of victims of a serial murderer track him through the residual energy of his evil.
Interesting and dark with imagination and evil. The age oil battle between good and evil. Bloody and gory in confrontation but with emotional conflict with belief and human frailty , expression, and God given need.
I'm hooked on this series. Events continue to unfold, the Beast is actively taunting Kate and Weston but indirectly. There are some new players that propel the story to that next step.
