Brielle Davis #1

The Unveiling of Brielle Davis

Rate this book
The noises started the night Grace died. Bri hears things no one hears. Sees things no one sees. The question is, are they real or all in her head?

When Bri gets caught coming home drunk after the death of her sister, her parents think some time away might be good for her. She’s forced to spend the entire summer before her senior year at Cabin Creek Falls—a camp full of spoiled, rich kids where she’ll surely be out of place.

Her plan is to make it through the summer minding her own business and staying out of trouble. But it doesn’t take long for her plan to fail. During the opening dinner, she slugs Carter—the camp’s Mr. Popular—after he plays a practical joke on her roommate, putting her on his radar, which doesn’t make Quinn—the camp’s diva—very happy.

To top it all off, Bri befriends a lonely teen boy no one else can see who swears he’s dead, and she’s haunted by a deranged woman that sends chills through her veins. Has Bri gone insane in her grief, or are the boy and woman actually real? Which is worse?

After reading what this book was about I was very curious.
We meet Bri who is off to camp for the summer. Her parents have decided this will be good for her. Bri's sister Grace passed away a few months ago and she's kind of lost. In the beginning she doesn't really get why she needs to go, but doesn't have much choice. Bri is kind of worried though, since Grace died she's been hearing and seeing things that she's not sure are real. This isn't as bad at camp, except for the boy she keeps seeing that no one seems to notice. Is she crazy or is something going on?
This was a beautifully written book that is very emotional. I can't imagine what it's like losing your twin sister after she was sick for many year. It's understandable that Bri may even feel a bit guilty that she's still alive. Her whole life revolved around Grace, spending as much time with her as possible, because they didn't know how long they would have. During camp Bri starts making friends and that's something she's never had before. They were always more Grace's friends. It takes her some time to learn to lean on them, but eventually she does. Especially the girls she shares a cabin with. The fact that one is a major bookwork gave this book some extra points, haha. Grace grows a lot in this book. She makes friends, learns that it's okay to talk about her sister (even if this is with a psychiatrist) and realizes that not all boys mean trouble. Carter seems like a jerk in the beginning, but we soon find out that's not the case at all.
Then there's still the fact of her hearing things and the haunts that she sees. I thought this was a really interesting aspect, but I think it could've been developed a bit more. To me this book was more about Bri finding who she is and how to go on without her sister. I kind of figured out who the woman was halfway through the book, but it didn't take anything away from the story. With how it ended I really hope that this aspect of her life is explored more in the second book. I want to know more, because this book was really a good start.

Not really sure what to make of this, so I'm giving it a 3 stars.

To start off with, I thought I was going to hate it. Brielle was a typical whiny self-entitled teenager to begin with but I guess she wasn't so bad as the book progressed.

I found the 'I see dead people' part was a more of a sub-plot and it could have been developed more. And of course . The reason why Brielle can see ghosts was a bit weird and didn't make sense to me.

The whole Brielle-Carter-Quinn love triangle drove me crazy. I feel like ex-girlfriends only serve a purpose in contemporary as the villain who's sole goal is make sure the love interest is never happy with another girl and Quinn was a typical example of this.

Overall, it was cute, if frustrating, and the very ending was predictable. Not sure if I'll be picking up the next book.

Brielle is a young girl whose sister died of Leukemia. They had an effect on Brielle's behavior and her parents end up sending her to a summer camp. Now has new problems including a guy that may or may not be interested in her, one girl that is a total bitch to her, a girl that likes reading but is basically shunned by others, various games the camp has set up, and one girl that suffers an accident.

If that wasn't enough she finds out she can see ghosts including a boy around her age that seems to be stuck her and a woman that can grow extremely violent. Worse still, Brielle can actually be physically hurt by the woman.

So, she has a boatload of things that she has to deal with including one that could kill her. She wants to help the ghost boy, avoid the crazy woman ghost and still keep up with the various camp activities. It all makes for a rather fascinating book.

It’s been three months since Brielle lost her fraternal twin sister, Grace, to Leukaemia. When Bri starts to make bad life choices as a way to cope with her grief, her parents decide to send her to Cabin Creek Falls, a camp which specialises in counselling services as well as regular camp activities, for the summer.

Bri’s resolve to remain incognito and stay out of trouble during her stay is given a setback when she catches the eye of Carter, the most popular boy in camp and the Queen of Mean, Quinn who happens to be Carter’s ex.

Bri’s stay at the camp takes an unexpected turn when she sees a boy who no one else seems to notice. Coupled with the strange sightings of a deranged woman who keeps begging for her help, Bri begins to wonder if what she is seeing is real. However, she’s not the only one with this gift..

This was a beautifully written engaging book which packed an emotional punch. Bri is an appealing protagonist who is loyal, gutsy, vulnerable and flawed at the same time. From the offset, one can’t help relating and sympathising with her loss. Her journey of self discovery as she learns to cope with her grief was a revelation to read. The flashbacks with Grace were particularly poignant.

The secondary characters felt real and were three dimensional. From the quiet bookworm to the Queen of Mean who definitely seemed to be hiding something under that hard veneer as well as Grace herself.

The plot itself was gripping and kept me engrossed. One or two scenes were quite chilling as the spirit of the woman became more desperate. I figured out her identity halfway through the book but this in no way deterred me from wanting to see the story unfold.

Im looking forward to further exploring the outstanding world building that the author has hinted at in this installment. The difference between a ‘haunt’ and a ‘halfway’ as well as the ‘Veil.’ Ghosts are my favourite genre so I thought this book was a unique take on the previous books I’ve read. The fact that Bri was able to see them because she had seen her sister die being another example.

My first introduction to the author did not disappoint. She has set the scene for the next intriguing installment nicely and I for one can’t wait to read it.

I dived into this book without any expectations. I started it at around 9pm and finished it at around 2am. Didn't realize that it was already morning. I was that entertained.

Brielle is half of a set of twins. Her twin, Grace, died of Leukemia. She was sort of angry with the world since her sister was the good kid, positive outlook, Miss Sunshine, the works. And she could not accept that she is gone and she survived. As a result, she started to rebel a little, came home drunk one night and got caught by her parents. She was then shipped off to a fancy summer camp which she later on found out was on scholarship since they are not well off. There is a love story in here but did not take majority of the book, and a minor love triangle between Bri, Carter and the bitch ex Quinn. Quinn is the typical mean girl and is set up to be hated. LOL

So, while in camp Bri discovered she can see ghosts. She even becomes friends with one, Nolan. But there is also another ghost who is scary and dangerous. That was actually the part that I felt like there is a loophole or something. I mean, she has been hearing this ghost even before she got to camp. Why? I don't get it. This was never explained and I won't tell you the twist on who this ghost is. I somehow figured who it was because of the small clues here and there. But the confirmation towards the end was still confusing to me with all the loopholes. Why was she haunting Bri even before the camp was never explained. Hence the 4 stars. But overall it was a good read and I am on to the next book.

Loved this. A spectacular start to an intriguing series. It's a great mix of teen drama, some mystery, a little bit of horror, and emotional growth. The main character, Bri, is complex and consistent. She's likeable but still has flaws. All of the secondary characters felt real and three dimensional. Even her sister who we never actually meet is very well developed. I loved the back and forth with the love interest, Carter. As far as ghost stories go, this one isn't heavy on the scary but has some creepy moments. I love how the "ghost" world is being set up. This book reminded me of a more mature version of Meg Cabot's Mediator series (which I also love). Even though this is part of a series, the ending still felt satisfying with just a tiny hint of a cliffhanger. Absolutely recommend.

Awesome read, well written with a great plot and characters. I was engrossed from start to finish. This book has romance, twist and turns, and suspense. Brielle is at summer camp and has to deal with mean girls and seeing ghosts. She also swears off boys for the summer. Will she stick to it? Read to find out! I am so excited this is a trilogy and I can't wait to read more. I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

I've read many books by Nissa and am intrigued by her story creation. This book was no doubt good follows the story of a girl who is affected by her sister, Grace's death due to leukaemia who afterwards is sent to a camp by her parents. The plot is enjoyable though there are some editing errors. Overall enjoyable.

I love Ghost stories :)

I found this new series, and so far, I’m loving it!
We meet Bri, and find out her fraternal twin died, and dealing with her death has been tough.. especially when Bri discovers a new ability.
Time for camp, and a great introduction to characters, and some problems encountered on the way… book 1 is great, so on to book 2 :)

kept me hooked

I found myself struggling to to put this book down. I thought the plot and slow trickle of information made for an interesting and entertaining read. This reminds me of a teen version of Ghost Whisperer. I’ll definitely read book 2.

I really enjoyed the Unveiling of Brielle Davis by Nissa Leder. I liked the way the plot developed and the characters were well fleshed out. The main character Bri is a fraternal twin. Her sister Grace had leukemia for many years and passed away recently. Bri and Grace were best friends. When Grace died Bri started to make some bad choices, as a way to cope with her grief. Her parents try to get her back on track by sending her to summer camp. The camp turns out to be a camp that also provides counseling services in addition to the regular camp activities. Bri is not overjoyed at that prospect, but she is determined to make the best of it.

While meeting the new kids at camp she discovers something new about herself. She sees dead people and she may not be the only crazy one.

I highly recommend this book for readers of all ages. The story was engaging, and emotional and worth the time.

Something different but brilliant

This book is a nice blend of teen drama and sci find. Bri is a girl struggling to come to terms with the death of her sister. Her parents send her to a summer camp to take advantage of the counselling they provide. While there, Bri discovers she can see ghosts, a talent awakening due to the death of her sister.

The book follows Bri's journey as she learns to live again, as well as how she copes with the ghosts she sees.

The book is well written and very heartfelt. You can't help but sympathise with Bri, and hope for the best for her. There is laughter, fun, sadness, love and mystery all within. It is a great book for all ages and I look forward to the rest of the series.

Life lessons

Losing someone you love is hard at any age but young Bri she not only lost her fraternal twin but also her best friend to cancer. I believe after losing someone it's hard for the one left behind to learn how to live. It's a great start on the first book in the series. Now that I am hooked of course I will buy the rest just to see how young Bri navigates seeing the dead and her might be love interest. Happy reading !!!
