Odd and quirky. It does lose something with the comic bubbles and the story makes little sense.

What leads us to read such juvenile books?

Well, I can report that I saw this book and noticed it was a World Book Day 2004 choice so I thought I would purchase is and see what they were offering children seven years ago. I decided (a) to read it and (b) to pass it on to a young friend to encourage reading.

I can report that I have achieved the first and will soon achieve the second. And in the meantime I can say that 'The Magnigicent Mummies' (and didn't we all have one - a magnificent mummy that is!) is a charming, amusing story that will entertain all youngsters who choose to read it.

The family is a touch eccentric, but we can perhaps accept that from an ancient Egyptian family who comes into contact with a more modern day Englishman, appropriately named Sir Digby Digger. And the family even end up doing the 'famous Mummy [Egyptian] sand dance' a la Wilson, Keppel and Betty of the early 1930s!

A silly story with lots of morbid, but non offensive humor (mostly to be found in the brightly colored illustrations through out the book. This is a good early reader for those who are bored with the classic, somewhat dull ones. Apparently it's part of a series.
