The story of this four-part audio drama was written by Robert Brooks and it was narrated by Steven Pacey. It is about Gul'dan opening a portal to the Burning Legion inside the Tomb of Sargeras, with mostly Khadgar's and Maiev Shadowsong's desperate attempts to prevent this.
Executive Summary: A pretty good short story in preparation for the next World of Warcraft expansion.
Audiobook: Steven Pacey is a good narrator, and makes this worth listening to over simply reading the freely available text. You can download a copy for free here: https://worldofwarcraft.com/en-us/new...
Full Review I'm a bit Warcraft fan. I have been for over 20 years. I've read a handful of the books over the years, but far from all of them. Most of the last few I've done have been as free review copies of the audio.
I always feel like these stories work best in audio. This one is no different. It's pretty short (about 90 minutes as I recall) but you can't be the price.
If you're a current or former Warcraft player, or just a fan of the universe it's worth grabbing this for a quick listen. There isn't a ton of depth here, but it has me excited for the expansion, which is probably the point.
Top notch audio drama production, great story, well written. I wish Blizzard would do these things more often. Even if their games are crap, their art department is just awesome.
I remember following this when it first aired on the official WoW YouTube channel, constantly checking for the next part. Legion was easily one of the expansions I've enjoyed the most, lore-wise, and this little audio drama still holds up, still makes me go "it's so good" as I listen through it. If you're not deep into the lore and/or don't really care about the how or why when it comes to motivations, then you can easily skip this. If you enjoy lore and haven't already given this a listen, I think you will quite enjoy this. It joins in with the pre-Legion quests, if you remember those, and it bridges the gap between the end of Warlords of Draenor, and the breach of the Vault of the Wardens at the end of the Demon Hunter starting zone.
The only reason this isn't a 5/5 for me, is because I would have liked it to delve into Maiev's thoughts as well. I realize it would possibly have spoiled parts of the expansion, and that's perhaps why she was left out, but still!
A compelling story and fantastic bridge between the warlords of draenor and legion expansions.
The writing style was immersive and flowed very well. We were given enough information to know what was happening without going to much into the lore in such a short time.
The narrating and sound effects were top tier. Steven Pacey just captures each character really well, he builds suspense, spews venom and gloats like a madman. You can feel the hatred between Gul'dan and Khadgar and the distain Gul'Dan has for Kil'Jaden.
Honestly even for non Warcraft fans this sells the lore enough that I would be into it.
4.5/5 - Extra points for how short it was with how much was done.
Nicely done. My involvement in Legion has been very limited, I left soon after rushing through most of the quest lines. Now, as I returned to BfA, I decided to explore the previous expansion. These pieces of lore, nicely written and performed, helped me a lot. I hope Blizzard will make more of these in the future.
As a dire fan of everything Warcraft related, all I can say is: WOOOOHOOO! DAT IS AWESOME!!! As a nasty book critic, I can say: really good writing. All the scenes are described in an epic way, that is easy to picture in your mind. Especially if you know the lore and locations.
This was my first audiobook, and it was recommended to me by my brother. I was never a big gamer of World of Warcraft, but I must say I really enjoyed the Book!
It was truly excellent narrating, and I was really captivated. It will not be my last audio book!
Will I recommend?: Yes! You can find it for free on YouTube !
