Penny in London

Rate this book
You know how everyone says when one door closes another one opens? At the time, you find this statement obnoxious as all get out because a) you don’t really know what the future holds, it certainly hasn’t been a cakewalk so far, and b) the thought of change is unbearable. You feel like your life is falling apart and everyone around is feeding you clichés like they’re made out of kale or quinoa or whatever the trend health food is right now. You don’t want kale clichés, you want double-chocolate fudge realisms, and you want them now. You just want things the way they were, but then something happens, a moment, an instant that sets you out on a path toward happiness you never knew could exist, and suddenly you think, huh, I don’t think I want double-chocolate fudge anymore. I think I’m in the mood for this heaping serving of strawberry cheesecake sitting in front of me…with a side of kale. And a pair of split pants, but we won’t get into that right now.

Graham Glenn may have tossed her in, but Oliver Finn made her feel again.

Fisher Amelie

Fisher Amelie resides in the South with her kick ace husband slash soul mate. She earned her first 'mama' patch in 2009. She also lives with her Weim, 'Jonah', and her Beta, 'Whale'. All these living creatures keep the belly of her life full, sometimes to the point of gluttony, but she doesn't mind all that much because life isn't worth living if it isn't entertaining, right?

Fisher grew up writing. She secretly hid notebooks and notebooks of dribble in a large Tupperware storage container in her closet as a kid. She didn't put two and two together until after college where it suddenly dawned on her, "Hey, I like writing". She's a bit dense. "No, I'm not." "Yes, you are. Put down that Oreo, your butt can't take any more." "You're rude." "Yeah, yeah." Anyway, she likes to write and has finally beaten her self-esteem into submission enough to allow herself to be scrutinized under the 'other readers' microscope. "No! No! Not a cover slip! Last time it gave me a ra...." (mumbling)

”You let me fall in love with the wrong guy!

description

Fashion vlogger Penelope Beckett gave up her life in the states and moved to London all for the love of a man named Graham Glenn. Things for Penny go from bad to worse when she gets dumped and injured all in the same day.

"I looked at him, wondering who he was, wondering what had happened to the man who’d begged me to join him in London, wondering where the one who promised me forever had gone.”

description

Needing a friend’s help upon her release from the hospital she calls the only other person she knows in London, Graham’s playboy best friend, Oliver Finn. The expensive purse maker, Oliver is loyal to a fault when it comes to Graham. Oliver reveals the pain of his past as the two get to know one another and it seems that he has had feelings for Penny since first sight.

”You were supposed to be mine. From the beginning, you were supposed to be with me,” he said, shocking me.”

description

The time Oliver spends with Penny and his reveal about his feelings all throws Penny. She decides that she needs to get her life back on track from the hurricane of Graham. Graham was controlling and bossy and simply a douche whose true colors and extent of his selfish ways are revealed by the end of the story.

description

Penny makes a great career for herself in London and her and Oliver’s paths cross once again and this time she’s ready and so is he for the possibilities of their lives together.

”I didn’t know you could ache for someone the way I ache for you. If I’d known, I’d have let her go long before we married. Freed her to find her someone and then I would have sat quietly and waited for you happily. With the promise of Penelope Beckett, I would have waited forever.”

description

This is a sweet read with a relatable heroine, a sweet hero, and a good amount of drama and angst.

Penny in London is my first from Fisher Amelie so I really wasn't sure what to expect. I was drawn in by the beautiful cover and the promise of a quick read. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself unable to put the book down and eager to get back to it when that wasn't an option. This is a fun, light hearted romance that will sweep you off your feet and charm your socks off.

Penelope Beckett - born and raised in Dallas, has left her life behind in the name of love and trekked across the pond to be with her boyfriend - Graham. Life in London couldn't be better for Penelope, that is until it all goes downhill.

After Graham breaks her heart and bad goes to worse, circumstance has left Penelope with no choice but to turn to his best friend - Oliver Finn - for help. In Penny's eyes, Oliver is nothing but a one dimensional playboy always looking for his next hookup. But the more time she spends with Oliver and the revelation of a secret from his past, the harder it is to deny how wrong she has been about him. Not to mention their growing chemistry.

I had so much fun with this book. I loved Oliver and his charming ways. Penny is so down to earth that you can't help but want to be her friend. They had this playful banter from the very start that I couldn't get enough of. Penelope and Oliver are most definitely a couple you will want to get behind and root for.

Penny in London was exactly what I needed right now. A sweet, light, and heartwarming read that I'm sure many other readers will enjoy as well.

I don't believe in regrets, not really. I mean, in the heat of a moment I may strongly wish I hadn't done something but to be honest, I believe all our decisions help mold us into the persons we're supposed to become. Think about it, if everyone made flawless decisions, how could any of us truly understand life, and all it's accompanying beauties? If we never suffer, how can we recognize joy for what it is? If we never witness another's struggles, how can we submit ourselves to helping them? No regrets help shape us into selfless people. After all, the only regrets people really speak of are surrounded by a hesitation to love or allow love.

LOVE. LOVE THIS BOOK! Go make your heart happy and read this book!

SO MUCH CUTENESS

The most painful thing is losing yourself in the process of loving someone too much and forgetting that you're special too.

So we follow Dallas-born beauty vlogger Penny whose packed her bags and took off to London to live with her boyfriend Graham. Flash forward six months and we all soon learn Graham is not all he says he is. He's been cheating and quickly dumps her to be with the other girl and tells Penny to move out immediately DOUCHEBAG Penny, heart broken and tipsy from the club they were at, accidentally falls into her neighbors pit and ends up with not only a broken heart, but a fractured leg and broken arm. Then ends up having to stay with her only other friend in London, Oliver *swoon* Oliver is ridiculously hot and also happens to be a bit of a player. They grow closer and closer, strike up a friendship and then start to fall in love, but Penny is still nursing her broken heart and trying to come to term with the sudden change in her life.

"You were supposed to see him for what he was. You were never supposed to love him."
The tears start streaming. "That's an issue, Oliver, you know why? Because I did fall in love, but it was the version of him he wanted me to love. It's the most damaging consequence associated with sociopaths. You love the person they want you to love, and then you're left with the aftermath when they finally decide to show their true colors."

Penny was SO RELATABLE. I loved going with her on her journey towards discovering who she was and realizing what she wanted in life. She was hysterical and some of the situations she would get into were so cringe worthy in the best way! So many laughs! And her job was so awesome to read about! And so was Olivers!

I waited for Oli to open my door, which was something Graham had never done for me. With every kindness Oliver offered me, the love I thought I felt for Graham fell through to the earth in small bits of burning ash.

The development was so good!!!

With unnecessary caution, as if he was still afraid of my rejecting him, he inched his hand toward mine. I didn't dare move my fingers with his. He needed to know he had to do all the work but I wanted him to do it. With Graham, I did all the apologizing, all the groveling, all the wanting, all the work. It got me none of the reaction I was begging for in him. Simply put, if a boy wants to love you, he will. You cannot force it. Trying to only makes you appear weak, and women are infinitely more powerful than they could possibly comprehend.

I loved watching their relationship progress and it was the cutest thing! Especially the ending! I was so happy and smiling ear to ear! Honestly this book is PERFECT if you just want to read something light and fun! There is a touch of drama and then towards the second half it dives into a bit of a serious issue but I loved how it was done.

"I lied before," I told him. "I know it's me you want. Know it's you I want too, but there's a canyon between us neither of us are ready to vault over. Neither of us would survive it."

It's about falling in love almost at the wrong time in your life and trying to allow your head to catch up to your heart. It plays in your head like a classics romantic comedy and it's fantastic.

"I'm afraid of you Oliver Finn."
Oliver stopped breathing. I saw it. His chest settled still and he sat upright, leaning toward me, his face inches from mine.
"I won't argue with that," he revealed.
"Why?" I asked.
"Because you should be afraid of me."
"I am, but my reasons are my own. I wonder though, what yours are," I whispered.
He gave me that same smile again, the one that revealed he knew much, but would divulge none of it.

I love Oliver!
*squeals*

"Why?" He asked me. "Why would you want to be in my messy, complicated life Penelope?"
"Too many reasons to mention really, but mostly because you fit me so perfectly. You're interested in me, really interested. There's nothing more attractive to a girl than a boy who genuinely cares for them."
"I am and I do," he admitted.

It's a rather short story and extremely light and highly entertaining. The dialogue was charming, witty, and full of so much fun banter. I loved-loved how it was set in London and I had a very Beatles-like feel. Penny Lane by the Beatles just kept running through my head! Currently still on replay!
Definitely pick this one up if you're in the mood for something really cute and happy!!!! Highly recommend! Super excited to read more from Fisher Amelie!

"May I ask you a question?" He asked.
"Yes" I answered.
"Could you fall in love with me?"
"Yes," I told him without hesitation.
"Would you?"
"Yes."
"Will you inform me the hour, the minute, the second you do?"
"The very moment." I promised.

Fisher Amelie’s latest—Penny in London—is a wonderful, lighthearted romance. You’ll read it quick, smile on your face, falling hard and rooting loudly for Penny and Oliver. Sweet and sexy with a contemporary twist, this fast-paced love story about the girl that got away and the boy with more than meets the eye, will have you swooning page after page.

We meet Dallas-born Penelope, who fell in love and moved across an ocean to be with her boyfriend Graham. In London, their life seemed idyllic—more or less, anyway—until the day he broke her heart.

Distraught, the day gets only worse and before long, Penny finds herself turning to Graham’s friend Oliver for help.

Oliver is a playboy, always looking for the next girl to warm his bed. But without options and with only the tatters of her heart in tow, Oliver becomes her life raft.

Penny realizes just how much she’d changed of herself to accommodate Graham. So she begins to pick up the pieces, of her heart and of herself.

“I had changed for Graham. It was time for me to find myself again and hope I was still there.”

The more time she spends with Oliver, however, the more she uncovers, the more she realizes there is so much more to him than she gives him credit for. She also didn’t expect the chemistry that’s undeniably sparked between them.

“You were supposed to be mine. From the beginning, you were supposed to be with me.”

Oliver and Penny’s story gets a lot more complicated before it gets better, however. Oliver hides a heartbreaking past while Penny struggles to process her emotions. She needs to decide the path she wants her life to take, whether she goes all in for the boy she’s fallen hard for, or whether she packs her bags and heads back to Dallas.

“I want you, Penelope. I can count the things I am desperate for on one hand, on a single finger. You. I want you. Only you.”

Their story is sweet and romantic with an edge of adventure and an irresistible twist of fate. Fisher Amelie delivers a great lighthearted love story that many readers (like me) are sure to enjoy!

So to be honest, I started this book because I saw Colleen Hoover posting a dialogue of this on her Instagram. I was looking for something romancy to read to cure my heartache after It Ends With Us, and I was like why not start this ?

This surprised me really, I started of liking it but not loving it since it all felt a bit to obvious for me. But as the story progressed it really developed and I fell in love with it. I love love love Oliver, and I cannot get over him.
I really liked the whole blogging aspect of it since its so common nowadays, also the fact that Oliver was a bag maker was so interesting ! I really liked how the two of them developed and how everything turned out. My heart really ached for Oliver throughout this book.

Simple read

This book is about a Dallas native name Penelope. She moves to London for a guy. She is a you tube Vloger and she gets dumped by Graham the guy that had her move to London. Graham has a best friend named Oliver that helps her during a bad situation. The book has no sex, or chemistry for either guy. It lacked a romance connection that had me at Boring. This book was a little painful to finish. But it is a short read. The best thing about the book is the pretty cover.

The first book I have read by Fisher Amelie was Callum and Harper which instantly became an all time favorite, I fell in love with the characters and the story. And so I was beyond ecstatic to start yet another book by her – Penny In London. I have been in a Fisher Amelie drought for the longest time and now it finally rained.

Penny in London will take us to Penny’s journey on losing love, finding it again and everything else in between. There are moments that made me laugh out loud and there are moments that my chest felt so heavy for suppressing my tears because I was reading in public and I wouldn’t want them to think I’m on the verge of a meltdown. So yeah, to say this book brought out different emotions would be an understatement. Fisher Amelie’s brilliance is still apparent in this book, it was an easy yet delightful read. Maybe the only issue I had was, I wish it was longer, I wish there were parts that should have been expounded more so as to bring forth the impact it was trying to effect on its readers. There was something that I was looking for, nonetheless, it was good – it captured my attention and finished it in a day, which doesn’t happen often *insert adult life here and all the responsibilities I’m trying to run away from, haha!*.

Penny’s character is relatable in more ways than one. There is this sense of feeling that you couldn’t help but feel for her, happens to the best of us, I suppose. I loved how she developed into an independent woman after what happened with Graham. Oliver’s character, on the other hand, was a little hard for me to comprehend. I was trying to dissect his whole persona to come up with a spot-on conclusion on his character but came up short. His character was a little inconsistent, there are traits that contradict one another and I was finding it hard to reconcile them. The depth of his despair and how he handled situations were also a little lacking for me. Again, maybe I was looking for something more.

The story was divided into stages of grief, which served as a good mood-setter (if that is a thing), it somehow gives you the overview or at least what to expect from that chapter. And can you guys give me a pat on the back for knowing about the plot twist from the very beginning? I swear I was pumping my hands through the air whilst saying “I so knew it!”. Don’t get me wrong the book wasn’t predictable, I don’t know, but I just had that deep feeling that that was the big plot twist of the book. And I was so happy to know I have been right all along. *insert smug face, haha kidding*. So yes, despite the fact that this is a fun and easy read, there is that big twist that you have to watch out for, come back to me if you saw it coming too, or if you didn’t, that’s also amazing! I love me some books with unexpected twists. This book is wholesome and decent, something that is hard to find these days, it focused on the story rather than the steamy parts, us romance readers, know all too well. I love that it didn’t try hard to include unnecessary steamy situations just so it could sell. It was just right as it is.

And yep I had that biggest smile at the ending. It was so cute and heartwarming. I wish there were more pages so I could relish it for much longer. So go ahead, treat yourself with a light and funny read and pick this book up! You’re welcome.

In Fisher Amelie's new release, we do indeed meet Penny in London.
Originally from Dallas, Penelope meets and falls in love with Graham who is from England and follows him home. She thought she had it all, until she didn't. Broken hearted, shocked and a long way from home, life continues to throw another curve ball and things go from bad to worse for Penelope.

"I looked at him, wondering who he was, wondering what had happened to the man who’d begged me to join him in London, wondering where the one who promised me forever had gone.”

Lucky there's Oliver, Graham's best friend. A notorious player with a heart wrenching past. As Penny relies on Oliver's help, their friendship grows and she discovers there's so much more to Oliver than meets the eye.

“Oliver was a soothing reminder of what Graham should have been. I was beginning to hope things I wasn’t supposed to hope for with Oliver, which was confusing as hell."

I'm a sucker for an English man, and Fisher doesn't hold back with her characters in this book. Every time Oliver said darling was more endearing than the last. He was hard not to love and swoon over. I enjoyed their banter and how caring he was with Penny, right from the very start.

I loved Penelope's job! I must say, I haven't read about an occupation like hers in any of the books I've read. Despite her circumstances Penny was full of life, strong, sweet and down to earth even when she had a long journey ahead of her. After realising how much control Graham had over her, she commits to finding herself again. This wasn't drawn out, which I liked. Yet it wasn't instant either.

“It was time for me to find myself again and hope I was still there."

I've lost count of how many times I've said it. But seriously, look at that cover! Gorgeous.

Penny in London was just what I needed. It touches on a sensitive subject but I felt it was still a heartwarming, funny, addictive and romantic read.

I absolutely loved this book. It started with the cover. The cover is GORGEOUS! This is one of my favorite covers of all time.

The story's main character is Penelope/Penny from Dallas. She moved to London for a boy, Graham. Through Graham, she meets his friends, including Oliver. Penny is a fun character - she runs a vlog, she's real.
The only way I can think to describe this book is whimsical and sweet. It was a fast read and one that I would definitely read again.

Love makes us do stupid things– like Penelope Beckett for example. She flew all the way from Dallas to London to be with Graham Glenn, the man she thought she’d spend her whole life with. But Graham broke it off, and Penny accidentally hurt herself that’s why she ended up in Oliver Finn‘s care. Oliver is Graham’s childhood best friend. Oliver took care of Penny and the rest is history.

Penny in London is the first Fisher Amelie book I’ve read, and I am not disappointed at all. It is one of those ‘I’m-so-glad-I-decided-to-read-this-book‘ kind of book. I definitely loved every chapter. This book and I had never had any dull moment, you can see the proof because I read it in less than a day. This book is such a cute, light read, and it has a happy ending so I’m totally hooked! Oliver was totally my favorite character! OMG, he’s so swoony, sweet, gentleman, and British!! What more could I ask for? I wish I could find a man that will take care of me like Oliver does to Penny. LOL. Of course, I loved Penny, too! That girl is so strong and independent. She’s my spirit animal. You go, girl! I also loved Oliver’s family. They remind me of my family whenever we receive visitors at home.

If I loved Penny, Oliver, and his family; well, I HATED GRAHAM!!! No, I don’t hate him. I loathe him. He is sooooo disgusting! How can he do the things he had done?? Like, what kind of person is he? How can he do such things to his friend? Or maybe he didn’t even treat Oliver as a friend because a friend will never do such horrible things to his friend.

There is a very unexpected plot twist in this book which I loved. The book was already amazing, but this plot made it even more better!! If you’re into contemporary and romance, or if you want to try something that is out of your genre, I definitely recommend you this book. It is definitely worth the read.

It was a decent love story but it didn't wow me. And I only gave it three stars because I'm a sucker for romance.
It felt as if it was an insta-love kind of novel and it did not seem credible. I know it is a piece of fiction meaning that the events are not true but there were some passages that just did not make sense and it messed with the coherence of the story. Some dialogues were just too cheesy and you could sense the author drifting off while writing those.
Overall, I'm sure some would disagree, but I just want to point out that this is an average love story compared to the magnificent ones I have read.

This book is a total surprise! I wasn't expecting to laugh as much as I did and it'd been some time since I'd read a Fisher Amelie book, so the angst also caught me a little off guard as well. However, I loved the mix of romance, life lessons, faith, and drama. There were few major twists and most weren't surprises, but they fit perfectly with the story.

I think the biggest endorsements I can give this book besides telling you it's captivating and a book you can't put down, is how I feel like Fisher Amelie gets better with each book she writes. This book isn't long. The only thing I missed in it was the sex, but that still wasn't missed too much. The chemistry between Oliver and Penny is fantastic! They had such wonderful dialogues and I was always eagerly reading to see what they would say or do next.

I can't help but hope Fisher will right more with Oliver and Penny in the future. Even if she doesn't, I can honestly say I'm super excited to see what she writes next!

I honestly think Fisher Amelie is such an underrated author. Her contemporary romances are so cute, and sweet, and perfect. I've read three books of her so far, and I always like them. Yes, they're not the best NA ever, but when you're in the mood for a quick and happy contemporary//NA reading, her books are perfect.

Pen and Oli are so adorable together.

I'm probably a bit to critical when it comes to America authors writing about England but I gave this novel ago because I love two of Fisher's previous books. Honestly I liked most of this book and Penny & Oli were perfect when both characters got there act together. But some words that featured in the book drove me crazy number one being 'Dearie' agh I can't stand it & reason two 'bloody' not every English person says this word and are probably more likely to swear than say bloody!!! A quick read by a obviously talented author but it just missed the mark for me.

I didn't love it but it wasn't that bad either. I liked both Penny & Oliver and how they developed a better friendship, however I loathed Graham... that arsehole got off too easy near the end. He was antagonising both Penny & Oliver throughout the book and they kept bearing it silently. I know Oliver has some kind of friendship loyalty towards Graham but come on! He was not worth it and especially learning the shocking truth (I kind of had a hunch) Graham became the most despicable human ever. I would have beaten the shit out of him.

Penny in London is one of my very favorite books—ever. I love the way Fisher Amelie is able to spin such an emotional, unforgettable tale from characters that are realistic and lovable. Yes, they have their flaws, and that's why I love them even more. The relationships in this one were visceral to me as I read, which caused me to read this in an afternoon. I adore Fisher Amelie's writing style and descriptions, and this one has a major spot in my heart dedicated to it.

The overall storyline of this was fun, but the character’s dialogue was a bit pretentious and cheesey, including things like, “I can see forever, you know. It’s right there in your eyes.” Overall though, it was alright, and if you’re looking for an easy to read romance (and you don’t mind cheesey dialogue) you might enjoy this one.

Hmm. I'm a bit perplexed by this one. While I adored the concept, everything felt...off? I liked the characters enough (Oliver was charming, Penelope was determined) but that was kind of it.

IDK. It was weird. There wasn't any real chemistry or connection or something. *shrugs*

Before even starting this book I have to comment on the paperback book itself, it is a nice size book and easy to hold but the thing that stands out about it is that the print on the pages are so clear, great bold letters and a great font to read. I am so looking forward to reading this just from the way the letters/words look in the paper.

I am a huge fan of Fisher Amelie's writing and I usually cry at her novels in spite of my best efforts. But this book didn't quite impact me in any way.

Penny didn't feel like a real person in London to me. The London in the book isn't the London I live in. I expected this as Fisher isn't a Londoner, but still, if you are to write about a specific city I believe the research going into it should be a bit more in depth. Make me see the streets. Make me feel like I passed by that place so many times in my commute to work, university or church that I feel stupid for not noticing that thing. Amelie did that in Fury. I felt like I was there with Ethan. I was eating Pho with him. In this book the placing didn't feel real.

Olli isn't a real guy. What guy is like that? He was a really hard pill to swallow.

In all fairness, I got used to the Seven Deadly series and the depth each of the books is carrying, depth which this novel was lacking. I went into this book expecting something to make me love this city in spite of the loveless feeling it oozes everyday. Nope. Not gonna happen. I know that Fisher said it was a light-heated write for her in an overwhelming period in her life, but still... this book is only a chick flick and nothing else. I would only recommend it to hopeless romantics.
