A Study of Hands is an attempt to remove male intimacy from its sheath. It is an incision into Bodney's romantic relationships, and his evolving relationship with his father. It is the peeling of layers from experiences of love and abuse with men, and how that has translated into the ways Bodney communicates vulnerability. It is a reconstruction of safety while navigating a revolution of identity, survival, and love all at once.
These are beautiful poems, and the tonal cohesion of the collection is perfect. The poet executes perfectly each theme and idea, and I felt a sense of personal reader closure after finishing despite the pain of the work. Bodney knows what he's doing and does it well.
Bodney created a masterpiece of intensity and pain through his poems. The ending to "first response to my father's message" had me nervous and excited for Bodney's future.
Really grateful for this small book of poetry. I don't think the goal of poetry is always to relate to the audience, but I've never connected to the themes a poet dwells on as well as I have with this collection. It's provocative and encouraging to me to see queer artists expressing themselves without fear.
