The most Marc Laidlaw stories ever assembled in one book... Known as co-creator of the blockbuster HALF-LIFE video game series, and veteran writer of the esports phenomenon Dota 2, Marc Laidlaw is primarily a writer of short stories--horror, fantasy, and science fiction. But while his work has appeared in many popular magazines and several landmark collections over the last 40 years, it has never been collected in any form until now. 51 stories. Over a quarter of a million words. This is, quite simply, the most Marc Laidlaw thing ever. There was a point in this book that come in a lot of books I read: I thought, Pearse, why are you reading this? Are there not better books you could be reading? I think the issue here was quantity. Laidlaw had some great stories; 400 Boys had this great early cyberpunk/retrofuturistic aesthetic I dig dig dig. But 50 more stories? It was a bit much to slog through his worse works. I'm sorry. Not terrible writing at all, but this collection gets a 5/10.
I blame Netflix. I just finished the 4th season of Love, Death+ Roots and after seeing this short film, I thought, well this might b interesting. The collection was not my "cup of tea". I needed more backstory for everything. I enjoyed the writer's efforts.
