Modern Goddess: Trapped by Thor

Rate this book
Yes, she's a goddess. And, oh yes, he is most certainly a god. You can tell from the fact he marches around in glinting armor, picking fights with titans and picking up divine broads. But she didn't sign up for this. Sea monsters, kidnappings, evil plots, and the end of the world? Are you kidding? She spends most nights reading the weather report and icing cupcakes.

It's all his fault.

Modern Goddess: Trapped by Thor is a two-part sprawling fantasy. intertwined with mythology, adventure, romance, and philosophy, it's sure to please fans of Odette C. Bell's Witch's Bell.

This was a wonderful book. It had so much humor in it, and the imagination Bell had in conceiving this book, & developing the characters brought this book to life. I enjoyed how the all the various mythical 3 Pantheons were involved. It made for interesting character development.

Zeus/ Thor/ Jupiter was hilarious. I loved watching his character evolve, and how he constantly managed to get under Detail’s skin. I was chucking out loud at some of their interactions. They were hilarious! The other Gods were so interesting as well. The last quarter of the book was truly amazing. It took amazing imagination from Bell to conceive this plotline and then have the talent to have Details along with the other Gods evolve. I could actually see this being made into a movie. Parts of it reminded me of all of the movies out now that involve pieces of mythology in them, and this would fit right in. I walked away from this book in amazement.

For those of you who know me, it takes an excellent author for me to continually keep thinking about a book since I read so many of them each week. I had the opportunity to read the original copy of this several months ago, and I still think about the ending, because it is something that you can walk away holding a piece of inspiration in your hand. Yes, I realize I’m getting a little deep on this book, but Bell has several subplots that you can pick up on that are truly inspirational. However, she doesn’t let that detract from the story line at all. The story flows smoothly and seamlessly. Bell never once hesitates in the narrative of this story. If you like any type of mythology, or are just looking for a good book to entertain you this is it.

This book has it all-laughter, love, mystery, wonderful characters who you feel like you know, and finally, the power of taking destiny into your own hands. This is truly a unique book, and I guarantee you will not go wrong by taking the time to read it.

I'll go 3.5 on this one. Right, then...

1. I like this modern take on mythology.
2. I like that Roman, Greek, and Nordic mythology were all blended.
3. It's neat that there are gods and goddesses for EVERYTHING. Officana, the goddess of details? Cool.
4. About 1/3 of the way in, I learned to liked Thor/Jupiter/Zeus. (The interpretations on their/his appearance was funny!)
5. This needed to be EDITED AGAIN. A lot of typos and I had sections with weird symbols in place of letters and whatnot. I'm sure it has something to do with the transfer into a Kindle book, but still... someone should have that editing job. I can do it! :) I also stumbled a bit over a few of her Australian English words (but that's just a difference in location, it didn't take away from the book).
6. I'm a bit biased to Loki ever since "Thor" and "The Avengers" and, for that matter, Thor too... so I liked and disliked parts of their characters. But overall, I liked them more (but Loki will always be Tom Hiddleston to me!)
7. As the goddess of Details, I understand that she analyzes everything and being in first person, I GUESS I should have seen that coming... but there was A LOT of analyzing and I found myself skipping some sections to get to the actual action (while other times I could put up with it).

Overall, an interesting, entertaining read that I'm glad I found for free.

This book just about rocked my socks off. It is a wonderful blend of mythology and existentialism. It is very evocative with its ideas of freewill vs destiny and belief vs fact. The title is on the mark with how full the book truly is. There was not a scene that the words failed to paint for me. And while the details were thorough, I still felt as though my own imagination was able to forge its own trails as well. This story kept me thinking, both on the characters and the ideas that were laid out. Officina/Details and Thor/Jupiter/Zeus were just so engaging. I loved how very different and fundamentally the same Thor, Jupiter and Zeus are. It was wonderful seeing how Details and the aforementioned Triple Threat move from volatile to a functioning relationship. The author gave us a way to see beyond the mask of the gods and allowed a peek at the inner struggle to live a life beyond divinity. The book is beyond just philosophy and woe-is-me and offers readers a well stocked action with a bit of romance. The only real issue I had with the book was what happened to her cat. It was an unresolved issue that could easily be brushed aside were it not for my fear that my own cat might hurt me in my sleep if I callously disregarded the plight of a cat lost in time. Beyond that, I found it to be a wonderful book to just happen upon. Destiny... Totally destiny! Or maybe just belief that I would find an awesome book that day. Eh, what do I care? The outcome was the same.

This was more fun than I was expecting, light-hearted and witty without being frivolous. The characterization of some classic gods was honest and clearly researched though some details seemed to ring false.

My major complaint would be that the ebook version I read was full of misspellings, clearly a sharp eyed editor was replaced with a spell-check program. "Thrown" and "Throne" are both real words, but only one can be sat upon.

This was an interesting take on gods and goddesses. It was refreshing, though Details is a little drab. I think there’s a good reason for that, hinted at in the story. Thor was a lot of fun, though. He was more complex than I thought he was going to be, which was a pleasant surprise.

I didn’t like that Details didn’t care much about her cat. I don’t think it had a name. Or if it did, the name was barely mentioned. I don’t know why this bothered me so much, but it made me want to smack Details. She seemed to care more about cupcakes than her cat. I love cupcakes but they’ll never rank higher than my cats.

Overall, this is a fun read, and I’ll be continuing the series.

I read this book when it's name changed to the other title : "Modern Goddesses: Trapped by Thor".

I liked this book. It was okay. Much longer and different than Odette C. Bell's other books. It was a good blend with all the different gods: Norse, Roman, Japanese (I think), and Greek. Made me think about how they would all play out. The main heroine, Details, is such a limp noodle. Ugh, it was so boring reading about her.

I really liked the story...when I could get into it. I kept telling myself that when the protagonist's attention got snagged by a dust mote (as it seemed to do a lot) it was simply her nature. After she started to understand "the big picture", it seemed to me that we got stuck in a kind of an endless loop of metaphysical explanation.

On the other hand, she evolved and I really liked that. She had understandable concerns and motives. I really liked that her beginning aspect was a clear dimension of her final aspect, as if she had been "pared down" through millennia. Unfortunately, her romance seemed kind of an add on and not really romantic. She doesn't really fall for him as much as she's always been into him and he's been into her, but in the 2nd-grade, hit-him-on-the-arm-and-run-away kind of way.

The "bad guys" were cookie-cutter, and even the best developed, Loki, really didn't have any "connection" to the protagonist and therefore seemed to phone it in.

I wonder if a similar story being told from Zeus/Thor/Jupiter's point of view might be planned, and some of the courting/falling in love/romantic stuff is being reserved for it. I could also see a case for Loki getting his own book.

The Goddesss of Details was evidently absent when the book was edited. Running chapters through spell-check does not "count" as editing. I kept being pulled out of the action (when I wasn't slogging through metaphysics) by stupid homophone kinds of words like "thrown" for "throne" and "Sheppard" for "shepherd." And it wasn't just now and then, it was EVERY instance of "throne" or "shepherd."

I loved this book! I had a little trouble in one tiny section of the book with a format problem but the book was so good, I ignored it. After reading a few of Ms. Bell's books, it is difficult to find new words to describe her and her books. I would love to have a mind as creative as hers'. This one has definitely made her one of my favorites!
Officina is a (minor) goddess of details and facts. She loves details and can get lost for hours in them. It is, after all, what gives her power. Her job is to grant, or deny, visas to gods and goddesses wanting to visit Earth. She goes home every evening after work to Earth, to her little cottage with the white picket fence, her white roses, her white cat to read weather reports and bake cupcakes. That is, until today. Things all change after today. Officina is about to have more adventure than she can ever remember having before. And it all starts after Thor shows up wanting to visit Earth.

I'm glad I picked this book up. I did so because the description soused slightly cheeky and what I got was entirely different than expected.

Ultimately, this book was an exploration of how we see ourselves, how others see us, and how those perspectives both bind and free each other. It's really heavy on philosophy and psychology, but in a very entertaining story package. But then, that's in keeping with the tradition if mythology, right? The fable is an entertaining allegory for some lesson or demonstration of a characteristic.

While I found this entertaining, it was also not terribly concise. We got to hear Details ramble through her impressions with a lot of repetition before she made much progress in her perspective. There were a ton of editing failures also, misspellings, incorrect words, missing words, etc. Is it really that expensive to hire an editor?

So I liked it. There was a lot more quality and deep thinking there than I had any hope for given the blurb. Cool story.

the blur doesn't give much away, so I read some reviews and they all seem good, so ploughed right in. about a third of the way through, I began to wonder whether I was reading the same book as the reviews.

Details is the god of details (!!??!!) and facts. and she keeps getting attacked by sea monsters and Loki keeps kidnapping her.

Thor/Jupiter/Zeus (all the same person, different God personas) is tasked with finding out why Loki wants her and how to stop him.

and it turns out, Details is not who she thinks she is.

the title says it all. its all details, details, details. sometimes far too many and far too much. I got confused about half way through, but forced myself to carry on, just in case it got better.

I enjoyed the plot, for the most part. but some things where never made clear, and others far too clearly. lots of myths and legends, some blurred together and it made it so I had to think what I could remember.

not for me, and i'll not add any more.

I wasn't really sure what to expect going in - a modern tale told using classical mythological figures? I did find the divine characters interesting and engaging, and the imagination behind the entire book was fantastic. It was laugh-out-loud funny at times, and the author clearly has a talent for writing as she talks/ thinks. However - please, please edit this book for typos - I would be pulled into a scene, only to trip up on an autocorrect word or so that pulled me right back down to earth. Additional editing is also needed for the repetitive nature of the text and for the extremely long scenes. With that said, I do appreciate the world created by this author and the complexities therein. Not a book to read for the plot only - there is a fair amount of deeper thought involved if you want to understand the why and how of it all. Creative, and a fun read for those of us who find the ancient pantheons intriguing.

I give this 3 1/2 to 4 stars. I can't quite make up my mind.

Mostly it was a clean book, but it bothered me when it overused 'god' jokes. It was a little too detailed which you get from the name, but just had me wishing it would get on with the story in some places. Also, it could use some more editing.

I absolutely loved the main characters and how they interacted with each other (though, Thor did get on my nerves with how arrogant and insincitive he was at times, but the author wrote his character well) The sarcasm from Details had me cracking up and I enjoyed reading from her point of view.

I would recommend this book because it is a good read that keeps you engaged in the story (at least for me) and has an original spin on meshing all of the different mythologies together.

This book had all the makings of a great novel but somehow managed to fall short for me. It depended so heavily in details that I literally felt myself get lost in all the fluff. I skimmed entire paragraphs out of simple boredom. I just could not force myself to read all the constant bluster of everything. How Dione (before knowing she was Dione) had to simply explain everything ad nauseam again and again was beyond me. And I know that, in the end, her love with Thor/Jupiter/Zeus/Deus was supposed to be all epic and therefore we didn't exactly need to know much about it but it sure seemed like a cowards way out of doing things. She remembered. He remembered. They kissed. The end. Seriously? I feel so damn cheated right now. Same thing about Ragnarök let me tell you.

Details, indeed! I loved it. Yes, it was philosophical, but it also had action and humor! I had a lot of LOL moments, especially when it involved Thor and Zeus but when Jupiter came around, it became a bit more serious but still I pressed on because I wanted to see who Details was. And the story was right, I was one of those that had indeed forgotten her. Or maybe I never knew her to begin with? I love mythology, Norse especially, but I haven't read everything about it...still discovering more myths and gods/goddesses. I gave it 4 stars because I spotted quite a lot of typos and editing errors, I would have given it a 5 otherwise.

This was the first book I ever really read about gods and goddesses, besides reading the run of the mill myths in high school Mythology. It was very interesting to see the personalities the author placed with the recognizable gods and goddesses of the Greek, Roman and Nordic myths. I enjoyed the story line and the author's writing style. It definitely kept me hooked and I really couldn't put it down. Upside, this book and all of her other 1st-in-a-series books are free on iBooks!

I don't usually write reviews but this was a free Kobo ebook and the plot/story was wonderful. I feel the need to explain the 2 stars. The story was fun but it needs an honest to god edit! A digital edit and a literary, publisher's edit! I think this is a self published book but if pared down a tad might get some attention. I found 2 Klingon/garbled sections but skipped over them--no problems, very wordy!

I absolutely enjoyed this book! The love/hate and 'love to hate' between Officina and Thor/Jupiter/Zeus was brilliantly written. I was completely enthralled with the imagination and creativity Bell used to re-illustrate the myths and legends of old. The laughs were plentiful - God of Knit Wear?! LOL.. A thoroughly entertaining read.

This was an amazingly intricate novel. With a major deity that has a personality problem, and a goddess who though she knew herself until she was proven wrong, and a plot to bring down Ragnarok, this story is so full of action and adventure that you won't be able to put it down. Add in a hint of romance, and you have the perfect story.

A hard read

I really enjoyed this book as it brings all the facets of the different versions of the gods to light. I bought the book years ago but could never really get into I always got stuck in chapter 1. This time I pushed through and found an enjoyable, captivating read.
