Jack and his mother were very poor so one day he was sent to town to sell the cow. On the way he met and old man who wanted to trade 5 magical beans for the cow. Jack made the trade but his mother was furious and threw the beans out the window. The next day a beanstalk appeared. Jack climed the beanstalk and everyday stole valuable items from the sleeping giant. Until one day the giant awoke and tried to follow him down the beanstalk. An activity I could do would be to have the kids write about what would happen if they were given magic beans.

This was a very short version of Jack and The Bean Stock. It was short and right to the point. It was also different from stories I had heard before, this one included the wife of the giant and in others, they don't speak of the giant's wife. Also, Jack only goes up the bean stock 4 or 5 times and steals something different every time. In a way, it was kind of boring because there was not a lot of action or build up to the story.

This book is about a boy named Jack trading a cow for magic seeds. The mother was very upset about this, so she threw the seeds outside. Jack made many visits up to the castle that was at the top of the giant beanstalk that grew. During these trips, he stole many items from the giant and his wife. The last time when the giant noticed him, Jack chopped the beanstalk down so that no one could get to him. He was saved from the giant.

This is a version of the classic fairy tale. I like classic versions over the cartoonish versions that seem to dominate.

Jack and the Beanstalk is a classic story of a boy and his thirst for adventure. He keeps going back for more gold, even though he has all he needs at his home.
