Ashley, Kit Carson, Captain Benjamin Bonneville, Peter Skene Ogden, William A. Sublette, Zenas Leonard, and Ewing Young. This highly acclaimed book by Robert Glass Cleland was first published in 1950.
Enjoyed the research, and while new information has surely been brought to light since this book was written, it was nevertheless a good read about the men who roamed the desert southwest and their contributions to the knowledge of what was "out there." Not that most of them weren't in it for the money, and not that most of them could seemingly have cared less about the wanton slaughter of wildlife as they went their way. Some things never change.
