Maybe I should start by saying a few months ago (early 2022) I went up to the pearly gates of heaven.

And now I’d like to say how much I’ve enjoyed, and tormented on some, writing my books. The Proud Bastards and The Private War of Corporal Henson took some real gut-wrenching facing my feelings from the Vietnam War. As an 18-year-old in the Marine Corps I saw and did things that that no one should have to. After being traumatically wounded and returning home, the Vietnam War followed me. It remained with me all my life. And as I grew older, the memories, nightmarish scenes of carnage, flashbacks, and PTSD seemed to increase.

Having an interest in history, my next books, Of Blood and Brothers, Book 1 and 2, based on a true story of two brothers serving on opposites sides in the War Between the States, was a challenge to write because of all the research and time it took to make it as authentic as I could. And I was very pleased and satisfied with the result.

After those four books, I wanted to try writing something lighter. I lit upon the Mac McClellan mystery series. Set in Florida near where I grew up, Mac, a recently retired Marine, happens to become a private investigator. And all kinds of things just seem to happen to him, or he becomes involved with. Starting with Deadly Catch, then Deadly Ruse, Deadly Dunes, and lastly Deadly Sprits, it was a series I had fun writing. The next in the series, Deadly Verse, was left half written.

Along the way I was also busy writing blogs, mentoring inspiring writers, and critiquing and editing for others. I enjoyed all of it as writing was one of my passions. And I so much appreciated my wife, Karen, for all of her support, encouragement, and love.

And that is where the stories end dear friends and readers.

***********
I was born in Georgia way back in the last century but grew up and lived most of my life in Panama City, Florida. In 2004 my wife and I moved to the Upstate region of South Carolina in the shadows of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, a land of stunning vistas, hundreds of miles of hiking trails, and numerous grand waterfalls.

I’ve been traditionally published since 1990 when my Vietnam War memoir, The Proud Bastards, was published. It’s about my time as a combat U.S. Marine in 1967-68. It’s still in print after all these years, currently with Simon & Schuster/Pocket. I’ve since written a few novels in different genres. I’m currently writing the Mac McClellan Mystery series which is set along the coast of the Florida Panhandle where I grew up.

I am going to start this with, I just Loved Mac. He was clever, a bit of a smart mouth, a lot amazing, and ever so funny. Best part, he was a great Private Detective. I loved everything about this book. The mystery was complex and the clues were interesting while the characters were just really down to earth. This is my first book by E. Michael Helmes, but I assure you it will not be my last.

I highly recommend this to any mystery lovers, and if you have a taste for the paranormal, then grab this! Well written, amazing dialog and wonderful mystery.

Has Mac started investigating the paranormal? E. Michael Helms Presents Another Mac McClellan Mystery - DEADLY SPIRITS Blitz & #Giveaway Click on Banner to Enter - INTL unless stated - Ends March 16, 2017
http://tometender.blogspot.com/2017/03/e-michael-helms-presents-another-mac.html

Hard boiled and flip on the outside, soft-hearted and just a good ole’ boy on the inside, Mac McClellan is to private investigators what grit is to sandpaper, rough, sometimes abrasive but able to uncover the beauty of truth under all of the lies. Is Mac dabbling in the paranormal? Doesn’t he have enough to investigate among the living world? Follow Mac as he uncovers who did the deed of death in DEADLY SPIRITS by E. Michael Helms, a ghost story with more ghosts in everyone’s closets than in the local cemetery.

Kate convinces Mac to join her at the Palmetto Paranormal Society, a group of amateur ghost hunters whose latest “fieldtrip” takes them to an old hotel, claimed to be haunted. While they found no evidence of ghosts, they did find the Society president dead from a fall, his neck broken and nobody knows what happened? Was he pushed by the spirit of a hotel guest? Or is the evil alive and breathing and ready to kill again? When another member is sent to the other side, Mac is quick to pick up that something foul is afoot and he is determined to keep digging until he uncovers the answers. What he didn’t expect was that his digging would find him neck deep in secrets, affairs and the webs people weave, or that he would become the next target for death.

Fear not, our crusty ex-Marine is on the case and this old dog has more lives than a cat on a hot tin roof. To call Mac a character is an understatement! He’s a charmer, a good ole boy, a sly fox and nothing gets past his suspicious nature, including the hot women who try to use their wiles to win his favor!

E. Michael Helms blends the grit of old time Private Investigators with the laid back Southern Charm of Florida’s Panhandle and pours it all into every word, thought and action that makes Mac, well, MAC! Filled with wry humor, and characters that all smell pretty fishy to me, follow along as Mac does what he does best, noses around like a hound on the hunt for a hidden bone! Mr. Helms can write and as a multi-genre author, he has never let me down yet! Dare I say Mac has his own brand of sex appeal?

I received an ARC edition from E.Michael Helms in exchange for my honest review!

Private Investigator Mac McClellan reluctantly joins his girlfriend Kate in a nightly excursion with the Palmetto Paranormal society. During the trip the society president is found dead at the bottom of the stairs with a broken neck. The death though ruled as an accident raises Mac’s suspicions and when more bodies start turning up Mac is convinced there is more at play than the ghostly spirits.

This is the fourth book in the series but can read as a stand-alone. I enjoyed trying to guess who the killer was but got it completely wrong. The dialogue was witty and hilarious and I loved the interaction between Mac and his dog Henry. 4 stars from me for this good old-fashioned mystery with interesting characters.

I would like to thank the author E.Michael Helms for providing me an ARC of this book in exchange for my fair and honest review.

Deadly Spirits will take you on a mysterious ride full of surprising twists and turns. It is fast paced, unpredictable, and full of excitement! If you love a well written murder mystery, then this one is for you!

Did anyone else read Nancy Drew when they were young? I was reminded of those books while I was reading Deadly Spirits. I really enjoyed this book! It was supposed to be book 4 in the Mac McClellan Mystery Series, but was promised to read like a stand alone, and it certainly did, but it also made me decide to add the first 3 books to my TBR!

So, now that my TBR is 3 books larger, let's talk about Deadly Spirits. It was fast paced and highly entertaining. It had bits of humor, intrigue, and plenty of mystery to go around. It had a well developed plot, captivating writing style, and nice, descriptive world building.

I really enjoyed the interesting plot that involved a murder happening during a paranormal investigation. Talk about spooky! The story really pulled me in and didn't let me go until the last page. It was certainly a "whodunnit" type of plot, and it was very well done.

The writing style was fantastic. I never found myself bored or confused. I was able to picture everything in my mind, and I just couldn't put the book down!

I was really intrigued with Mac's character too. He was brave and determined. He was astoundingly good at his job, and was very likable. But he also had a bit of a wandering eye that made me roll my eyes a few times, so he wasn't unbelievably perfect.

I loved the mystery aspect of the story. I was constantly trying to figure out who the killer was and was trying to put the puzzle pieces together. I loved how the story surprised me and kept me involved until the very end! If the first 3 books in the series are this good, then I may have a new favorite series! 4.5 stars!

Thank you to the author for sending me this free copy in exchange for my honest review!

This is my favorite in the series so far. I think it’s because I’m falling more for these characters with each new book. That and there’s something a bit more mysterious.

Mac McClellan is branching out from private investigations. His girlfriend talks him into joining the Palmetto Paranormal Society. Now he’s ghost hunting. Not one for whimsy, his military background formed him into a no nonsense man, he’s skeptical about things that go bump in the night.

It’s not long before his lark with the paranormal becomes real. The president of the society is found dead under suspicious circumstances and, as Mac does his thing investigating the death, more bodies start piling up.

Since the dead aren’t speaking, Mac investigates the only way he knows how, checking suspects off his list, digging up knew ones (pardon the pun), and stepping on toes. He may not be subtle, but he’ll get his man, or woman.

I really like Mac. I admire his discipline and bravery. Adore his affection for his dog, sneaking him human tidbits even though the dog will thank him with odiferous emissions later. And he’s quite the ladies man. Though he’s not fooled by a pretty cover. He’s just as likely to open a ladies door as to grill her when he suspects something fishy. And he doesn’t stray from his lady love. Mac knows a good thing when he’s got it.

The author gives you a wide variety of suspects and more than one mystery to solve. He puts you in the setting, feeling the humidity of the southern air, smelling the fishy scent of the ocean, and hearing the calls of the soaring gulls. I’m a southern gal and felt right at home. Minus a dead body or two.

There’s also plenty of action. Things get burnt up and bullets fly. SSDD for Mac.

If you’re looking for a fun detective series with a great storyline, look no further.

I was gifted a copy of this book. My review is voluntarily given.

Wow!!! This book was fantastic and I give it without hesitation 5 out 5 mysterious stars! I had to put this book off for a little bit because I got sick but started reading it last night. I stayed up all night turning pages to this fun mystery until I finished but it was worth the sleepless night! This book made me smile, laugh, gave me the jeepers creepers and warmed my heart. Mac's character is fantastic! He is the epitome of a southern gentleman.

Mac has his faults but he is such a good hearted southern man. I also thoroughly enjoyed his sense of humor and his love for Kate. I agree with many women in this book that Kate is a lucky woman! I also enjoyed Kate's compassionate spirit. Dakota was also a fantastic character with her rugged past but a custom personality fitted with mouth of a sailor. I loved the characterization in Deadly Spirits.

I loved how this book had me turning pages and at the edge of my seat with suspense. This was the perfect novel for the Halloween season. Even though Deadly Spirits is Book 4 in the series, you can definitely read this book as a standalone basis. This book gives you just the right amount of details about the character's past so you don't feel like your missing something.

I will definitely not be reading Deadly Spirits as a standalone. I can't wait until I get the chance to devour the rest of this series! I loved your writing Mr. Helms and Mac's southern chivalrous personality! I will follow you anywhere!😊📚❤

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!😁

Smooth storytelling, great voice, compelling characters, fascinating plot twists, evocative locations and a perfect balance between resolution and reality make E. Michael Helms’ Deadly Spirits a thoroughly absorbing and entertaining read. It’s the fourth mystery in a series, but it stands alone perfectly, with just enough backstory, naturally told, to create depth and sketch relationships without ever interfering with the story. Mac McClellan is an enjoyably flawed protagonist, loyal, tempted and human. Kate (girlfriend) and Henry (dog) give him much-needed anchors and assistance. Local cops inspire occasional reluctant loyalty. Local employer inspires amusing dialog. And local ghosts… well, Mac really doesn’t believe in ghosts.

The voices, whether serious or fun, are always pitch-perfect. A flask of Scotch offer Mac “spirits I could count on.” And the computer presents chances to study suspects online in a story that’s as thoroughly up-to-date as it is good traditional fiction. The setting is Florida, where a storm of characters and events might cause as much trouble as the weather. But a link to Oregon, and a very real sense of time’s passage, warfare’s scars, and love’s loyalties, make it a tale for all places and all readers who enjoy mystery. The Mac McClellan books are a great series (I’ve read two so far), and this one would be a great place to start.

Disclosure: I was given a copy and I offer my honest review.

This is Book 4 in the Mac McClellan Mystery series. I haven’t read any of the previous books and was easily able to pick up with characters and subplots. Some allusions are made to earlier cases but just enough to whet your appetite for those earlier stories.

Mac is a PI with past military experience. Somehow his girlfriend talks him into joining the Palmetto Paranormal Society. What should be late nights scoping out beaches, parks and possibly haunted buildings with ‘ghost hunting equipment’, leaves two members dead and one intriguing mystery to be unravelled.

This mystery (light suspense) novel is very well-plotted. The crimes are many, the clues even more abundant and the suspects and motives will keep you guessing. Although I was able to piece together some parts of the mystery, the ultimate culprit and motives were well-hidden. Every time I thought I had a viable suspect pegged, he/she turned out to be a dead end.

There’s no doubt that this story is told from a male perspective. We’re treated to several descriptions of the delightful female physiology Mac encounters. Yet, he worries about possible interest thrown his girlfriend’s way…

This mystery story packed quite a punch. From the first chapter the action begins and the pace doesn’t really let up until the end. The twists and turns provide a thrilling ride.
This is a plot driven story and the action keeps the momentum going. I was never bored while reading this book and wanted to get to the next chapter to find out what happens next. Plot twists abound and fully kept my attention.

Best line from the book: “He’s about as useless as tits on a boar hog. I’d rather hear it from the horse’s ass.” Dakota always did have a way with words.

If you’re looking for a well-crafted mystery that will keep you guessing to the end, give this one a try.

Mac might just be my new favourite person… I am legitimately disappointed that he’s fictional! A man after my own heart, he drinks (a man who has a flask of scotch in him pretty much at all times?? COME ON!), he’s funny and self-deprecating, a little pervy, has a big dog and a big truck. I just realised that, besides the big dog, I pretty much just described my man. NO WONDER I LOVE MAC SO MUCH! 😂

Some of Mac’s comments got a LITTLE old. Like describing women “from stem to stern”, or things like a character introducing herself as Brie and him thinking, “Brie, like the cheese. Tasty.” But, at the same time it suited him so well I didn’t mind. I could just picture him in an old film noir or pulp fiction kind of detective story! He seemed like he was a character from a different time.

I loved the mix of ghost hunting (especially with Mac’s disbelief) and mystery. I honestly wish there had been a little bit more in the ghostly realm in the book. But, I definitely won’t complain.

All in all a really fun mystery and I can’t wait to read more of Mac’s adventures!!

I am not usually into books that are a part of a series, or detective stories, which this is, but I respect the author, E. Michael Helms, and agreed to review his novel. I quickly found myself liking the main character PI Mac McClellan, even though he gives his dog beer. This was the give away to me that the novel was written through a male’s perspective because it was something my husband used to do to his dog, while I thought it was terrible. Helms has an engaging and very personal writing style. He incorporated his Marine background into his main character, which I especially enjoyed (since I read his memoir ““Proud Bastards: One Marine's Journey from Parris Island through the Hell of Vietnam”). I could hear the author’s own voice in this novel, and it is a pleasant voice to get to know.

In this novel, the protagonist’s girlfriend is part of a paranormal investigative group which is why this "whodunit" has ghosts with potential supernatural actions that lead to murders. Our skeptic PI suspects there are more than spirits doing the killing. There are strong shades of Philip Marlowe in this novel. I could almost see Bogie (Humphrey Bogart) with a cigarette between his teeth. Though, I personally found Mac to be more of a soft-hearted tough guy. My only criticism is that the characters seemed one dimensional, but that might be because I haven’t read the previous three novels in the series. All and all, this is a good beach book (if you don’t mind homicide on your beach) with likable characters and enough twists to keep you guessing. If you are into detective stories, give PI Mac McClellan a try, I do not think you will be disappointed.

I would like to thank the E. Michael Helms for giving me the opportunity to be able to say that he can write and excel in any genre.

*** NOTE: I RECEIVED E-COPY OF THIS BOOK FROM THE AUTHOR, IN EXCHANGE FOR AN HONEST REVIEW. MANY THANKS TO AUTHOR FOR GIVING ME A CHANCE TO READ THIS BOOK. ***

4.5 Stars

It was a bit tough to review because there was many things going on in the book and not everything can be discussed. Let just say the less you know the more you will enjoy. And I didn’t stopped to write notes on this book which is in a way good thing.

Deadly spirits is forth book in Mac McClellan Mystery. It’s whodunit murder mystery and thriller with spooky touch and entertaining characters written flawlessly and perfectly executed.

Characters-
There were many characters in this book including suspects and side characters.

Main character Mac McClellan, ex-Marine and private investigator, was smart, sarcastic, skeptic and real charmer. He had unique voice and narrated story interestingly and made ghostly talk and investigation funny. I loved his relation with his dog, Kate and local police. His investigation style was impressive, he left no stone unturned and was quite a gentleman. I liked the way author represented him and all other characters of the book. They felt realistic.

What I liked-
The beginning was fast and strong. Mac’s girlfriend Kate was member of Palmetto Paranormal Society (PPS) and she drags skeptic Mac to their first investigation at haunted hotel where one of the member of PPS dies suspiciously. As story progressed number of victim went high while narrowing down suspects was difficult and brain wrecking that took many character introduction for readers and research for Mac. Author created mind blowing suspense and investigation was written in such a way that it was difficult to pin point main culprit till the end.

I haven’t read previous books but I can assure this book can be read standalone. One thing that I noticed that few characters were old and introduced earlier in the series by Mac’s relation with them and I might have connected with them better if I read the book in order but anyhow they left quite an impression on me that I would love to see how they met Mac and how they grew with the series.

Investigation part was sometime went fast and then it was steady and smooth then again it turned to fast pace. I really enjoyed all twist and turns. All murder or attempt of murder happening to members of paranormal group kept me thinking who was the murderer and what was the motive, it made the book uputdownable.

Climax was most interesting of all. There was action and unpredictability, it kept on the edge of the seat. The theory at the end was also interesting with paranormal touch but I felt I wanted more clarity with psychology of murderer.

why 4.5 stars-
I couldn’t get the psychology of culprit and real motive behind all the killing and crime (like main character I figured out few reasons at the end but still not the solid one).

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. It was thrilling, entertaining and will keep your mind busy with whodunit mystery. I recommend this book to all mystery lovers.

MY THOUGHTS: Are mysteries your thing? Well E. Michael Helms brings Deadly Spirits, a mystery you can't miss. First question is "Who Dunnit?" This PI Mac McClellan book takes place in Florida. Now if you don't believe in ghosts, then switch on your imagination and if you do believe, this is right up your alley. Now the reason Mac has joined the Palmetto Paranormal Society is because of his "woman". She wants to do a little ghost delving with her honey. Seems like Mac perked the group up and things got going a little bit faster. Not that that was a good thing for Mac, for the reader, yes. Bodies, bodies and more bodies start showing up. These seem to be occuring at the haunted Navarro Hotel. That is if you believe in tha buildings can be haunted. This was a little of a shock for the Palmetto Paranormal Society. They hadn't seen this much action in a while. But taking a look on the other side is what they're supposed to be all about. Some of the bodies found, well, there could be reasonable explanations for them such as the society's president found at the bottom of a staircase. An Accident? Could very well be. Another a possible suicide? But all of these bodies showing up couldn't be accidents or suicides! Now the author puts you right in the middle of this Paranormal Society and what they are finding. They now have a lot of questions that need answers. Mainly, WHO DUNNIT? The plot is full of twists and turns like a web of deceit that needs untangling. Never a dull moment when Mac is around. There's always danger and lots of action. He lives a lifestyle similar to our lovable character in the Rockford files, trailer and all. Could it be that he lives in that trailer because his clients seem to die before they pay? He has a lot of good qualities that are important, he has a touch of being a bit old fashioned which means a man stands on his principle, he's good for his word and he is strong. I think that's why I like Mac so much. With each book, we learn more about Mac and what makes him tick. The bad thing is, the end comes and it leaves you wanting more of Mac and his life. I'm hoping there's going to be a bit more ghost hunting to come. We are finally left with the question, WHO DUNNIT? Do you know after reading this? Was it human or ghost? Read and find out.

I received a copy of this book from the author and PUYB and voluntarily decided to review it.

Mac and Kate are back in Deadly Spirits and this time we will be hanging out with the Palmetto Paranormal Society investigating the haunted Navarro Hotel.

I haven’t met Mac in person…yet, but seeing as how he hangs around the Florida Panhandle, it may happen. His investigations lead to danger and mayhem. His personality and the fact that he lives in a trailer always makes me think of the Rockford Files and Magnum PI. He’s a bit old fashioned where it really matters, loyal and trustworthy. Even a bit of a prude…He even has a Dobie, my favorite breed of dog. So much is familiar to me, marinas, woods, fire towers, lighthouses, hauntings…

Action and mystery abound and Mac is on the case. E Michael Helms always includes some humor and I do love chuckles with my murder.

The downside to his job, he has a hard time collecting payment before his clients kick the bucket.

Mac has a hard time taking the whole ghost thing seriously, until…the scream. I am a skeptic too. As they walk around with their ghostly equipment and asking the spirits questions, I would be hard put not to crack up laughing.

I loved everything about Deadly Spirits by E Michael Helms. He has included a lot of extras besides the mystery…a critter to fall in love with, a dash of the psychotic and a pinch of the paranormal…a recipe for success.

I love Mac and this is my favorite adventure…so far. Michael has brought him a long way, making him more complex in his simplicity. I can hardly wait for more!

It’s New Year’s Eve 2016 and between football and the year end fireworks, I cannot quit reading.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of Deadly Spirits by E Michael Helms.

Although this is book 4 in the series there was no problem at all reading it as a stand alone as the story is complete. The characters had a natural flow about them and there was enough back drop on who was who and how they fit together all in a very natural way.
Mac McClellan has worked as a PI for the last 2 years after leaving the Marines and 24 years service to his country behind him. This of course makes him a pretty focused guy when he has to be but not today. Today Mac is tagging along with his lovely girlfriend Kate Bell who is a member of The Palmetto Paranormal Society, not that he is a believer in ghosts and such things but simply for Kate.
There isn’t anything happening at the once Navarro hotel as far as spiritual activity goes except adding to any spirits already there as Dr. Ernest Bagwell, heading the ghost hunt, is found at the bottom of the stairs very much dead with a broken neck with a very distressed girlfriend at his side. Now Mac’s interest is certainly tweaked but this is just the first death in this little band of ghost hunters that are going over to the ‘other side’ faster than you can say ‘Is there anybody there?’
I couldn’t help but like Mac with his at times wicked humour and annoying view of every woman he meets. He just sort of grew on me the further I got into the book, I just couldn’t help myself. A real whodunit that uncovers more than a killer.  With layers of lies  and secrets affairs, it is a very busy entertaining read.  A great story, a mystery and light humour too.
I wish to thank the author Michael Helms for my ebook for this story which I have reviewed honestly.

Mac McClellan is at it again -- this time he's not just chasing bad boys and girls, but trying to sort out whether ghosts or pretenders are sending spooky signals from local haunts.

A man will do just about anything for his true love, so when Kate encourages Mac to help the paranormal group she's joined, he reluctantly goes along on one of their nightly excursions. Was that thump Kate heard a spirit -- or the sound of a flesh-and-blood body falling down the steps?

Quicker than you can say "Boo!" Mac's up to his eyeballs in bodies he can see, and those he can't. A bevy of beautiful women befriend him -- but who can he really trust?

I've long admired the way E. Michael Helms can weave a tangled web, filled with plot twists and various colorful characters -- but this, the fourth in the Mac McClellan series, was the reading equivalent of watching the plate spinners who used to mesmerize me on the old Ed Sullivan show: how many more plates and poles could be added before something comes crashing down? And then, miraculously, everything comes to a satisfying end.

Thank you, Mr. Helms, for another great Mac McClellan mystery!

Deadly Spirits (A Mac McClellan Mystery Book 4) by E. Michael Helms

In the fourth Mac McClellan series, Mac reluctantly joins the Palmetto Paranormal Society, at his girlfriend's request. Mac is not too sure about these "Paranormals"and ghostly spirits. Soon the president of the Society is found dead, a horrible fall down the stairs. But he is not too sure it is an accident. Then when Secretary dies of an apparent suicide, his suspicions are up. It is up to Mac to uncover the truth.

A fantastic story. I really like Mac, he is a bit quirky, but very likable. The plot is original and fun, with twists , turns and mystery. Mr. Helms knows how to grab the readers attention and not let go until the very end. I highly recommendDeadly Spirits (and his other three Mac McClellan books) to those who love a great (fun) murder/mystery.

Private Investigator Mac McClellan’s girlfriend Kate convinces him to join a paranormal society with her. Mac doesn’t believe in spirits, unless they’re of the alcoholic variety so he’s quite sceptical about the whole thing. While the society investigates an old hotel, the society president is found dead at the bottom of the stairs with a broken neck. The police rule the death an accident, saying the poor man obviously fell down the stairs, but Mac isn’t convinced. Then another member of the society is found dead and Mac sets out to investigate, which soon puts him in danger.

Deadly Spirits is the fourth book in the McClellan Mystery series but if, like me, you’ve not read the previous ones, there’s no need to worry as this can perfectly be read as a stand-alone. If paranormal isn’t your thing, that shouldn’t put you off this book either. At its heart, it’s a good old-fashioned mystery and whodunnit. There are quite a few characters to keep track off and each and every single one of them seems to have a secret, making the list of potential suspects quite long. Mac definitely has his work cut out trying to unravel the various threads.

Oh, what a tangled web we weave
When first we practice to deceive

Mac is a highly likeable character. As a former marine, he displays quite the tough exterior but on the inside, he’s a big softie. He’s intelligent and perceptive and has a wonderful sense of humour. As a dog lover, I particularly enjoyed his interactions with his dog.

Overall, I found this to be a quite enjoyable and entertaining read with an interesting and complicated plot and some wonderful twists and turns.

In DEADLY SPIRITS, the latest volume in the Mac McClellan Mystery series by E. Michael Helms located in the Eastern Florida Panhandle, Mac’s girlfriend Kate uses her feminine influence to convince Mac to join the Palmetto Paranormal Society. A series of excursions to places where supernatural activities appear likely to open the door to contact with the spirit world lead to murder and mayhem. In the first ghost hunt Mac feels ridiculous as he follows Kate through a doorway into an old hotel attic in search of ghosts. He ducks to avoid cracking his forehead and pulls cobwebs from his hair. This won’t be the first time he is in danger of receiving a cracked skull. The bodies promptly begin to drop in mysterious mishaps during each spook hunt. Mac’s Marine veteran background tells him there is more going on than a spirit rampage. The list of suspects and employers includes a gallery of luscious, devious beauties who all seem to have an eye for Mac and his Devil Dog Doberman Henry who Mac concludes is a “chick magnet”. Most of the cast are lying, leaving out facts, or have something to hide. As Mac investigates the deaths; would be OD’s, suicides, and accidents, things begin blowing up around him frequently. Explosions and gunplay follow wherever he goes. The Palmetto Paranormal Society begins to thin out and the layered plot slithers along like a diamondback gathering suspects and momentum. Kate’s interest in relating to the spirit world ends in a hair raising, goose bump climax that occurs in the middle of a hurricane and reveals some chilling, gory, and ghastly facts. Mac hesitantly considers the possibility that there may be more things in heaven and earth than is dreamed of in his philosophy.

Mac McClellan has been drug to a meeting of the Palmetto Paranormal Society. By his girlfriend Kate. He feels silly walking around an attic full of cobwebs. But when the president of the society is discovered dead, at the bottom of the stairs of a broken neck, things get interesting. Mac wonders how he could have fallen without anyone else hearing him. But then the secretary dies of a suicide and Mac knows something is happening. The more he digs the more dirt he discovers and when he becomes the target of the killer he knows that he is getting close to solving this case.

Mac is a charmer and you can tell that he goes with Kate just to amuse her. Thankfully a dead body catches his attention. There are so many levels of dirt to dig through, thankfully Mac has Kate, Henry, and Deputy Dakota to help him out.

This is a great mystery, I didn’t know the who or why of the murderer until the end. I did have a couple guesses that were completely wrong. And then there was lots of action and of course a big reveal during a hurricane. Talk about delivering the killer with a bang.

I love Mr. Helm’s mysteries. The Mac McClellan mysteries are wonderful, easy to get into, and filled with lots to keep you on the edge of your seat. Make sure to check them out.

I received Deadly Spirits from the publisher for free. This has in no way influenced my opinion of this book.

This is one series that I can't help but love. With each novel the writing becomes more in depth and the characters more enjoyable. The mystery in this novel kept me hooked while I sat back and enjoyed the ride. This author jumps right into this story from the first sentence and doesn’t let up. It was like being back with an old friend, trying to unravel the mystery right up until the very last moment.

Helms has a very personal writing style. His characters come to life to tell you their own stories. Helms writes with graphic descriptions without ever being gory, but ones that you can’t help but picture. Helms has an approachable, inviting style. I love the way that he writes in the first person, allowing the main character to tell you his story as if he were sitting right next to you. The characters' emotions shine through and affect their actions.

This novel is mystery at its finest. I couldn’t unravel it until the very end, and even then, I was stunned. The fast paced plot kept me wrapped up in the intricacies of the tale while allowing me to become completely immersed in the world that Helms has created. I simply can't get enough of Mac McClellan and his adventures.

Please note that I received a complementary copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

MacArthur McClellan has been working as a P. I. for a while now, it gives him something to do and helps his military pension last longer. He has a woman he loves, who won't marry him and a pup he spoils.
Kate has roped him in to going with her on a ghost hunt. When someone dies , it gets much more interesting for him. It doesn't hurt that there are lots of beautiful women involved in the case.
This murder /mystery is part of a series, but is easily read as a stand alone.
There is a lot of danger as the bodies count rises and Mac is struggling to find the guilty party. It is an intriguing book w by where I couldn't work out until the author let us, who done it. Henry is an absolute star.
I loved it.

Deadly Spirits is a haunting mystery with an ingenious plot, vivid setting and memorable characters, chief among them the incomparable Mac McClellan, who is easily one of my favorite PIs out there. This latest installment will satisfy fans of the series while sending newcomers scrambling to catch up. If you like Robert Crais and Harlan Coben you'll surely dig Deadly Sprits. I know I did. Highly recommended.

One of my favorite genres is mystery. It's just lately that I started to like horror mysteries. I'd prefer reading them than watching horror movies. My imagination is too active for my liking and I'd end up imagining seeing those scary creatures in the room. But if I am familiar with the actors who are in the horror movie, it would seem like the movie would not be that scary anymore. I don't know if that's weird but that's how I see it.

I got this from the author. He reached out to me April of last year through this blog and asked if I would want to review his book. Yes. It seemed like that was a lifetime ago. Time flies too past and as always, I'm playing catch up with my reviews.

This mystery story at first seemed like not really ghost related. Like Mac McClellan, I too was skeptical at first. I too thought the mysterious deaths were done by someone alive and breathing and not by a ghost. How the events had turned out in the story was very interesting and curious. It's enough to make the hair on my arms stand on end.

The mix of a ghost story and a series of murders is very fantastic. The addition of the paranormal element into the story tends to draw me in ever more. Who can resist a ghost purported to be on a killing spree? Really curious, right? Good thing, we have Mac, as skeptical as any PI could be. Of course, in his line of work, he can't just accept or take anyone's word for it. Evidence is important and it had to be as tangible as possible. More so, it should stand scrutiny and probe.

Like the rest of the small towns where everybody tends to know everybody, that's what's going on in this story also. Everyone seems to be connected to one another. And that connection, that somehow contributed to how the case of the murders were solved. Of course, we can't discount Mac's PI prowess and skills.

I just really like how the murders were resolved. It wasn't predictable but yet you can't help but suspect that there's a connection between some of the characters in this story. Now, I am curious what the other previous books were about. What were the previous adventures of Mac? Did they all had a sprinkling of the supernatural?

I give the book 4/5 old school tape recorders. Like these old relics of the past, a good old detective work goes a long way. And that there are no secrets that will stay hidden. Eventually they all come out into the open. Just like the very old murder in this story, even if it was after three long decades, finally it was resolved. Even if closure was delayed, at least that body and mystery could now be put to rest. I really enjoyed this book. The suspense of how dead bodies just fall one after the other with no obvious reason or suspect. I was glued and I didn't let go of the book until the story was over. It's been a while since I last read mystery stories like this. I have missed this. Thank you again, E. Michael Helms for the book copy. What's next for Mac?

By the way, I love that Henry is part of this story. Having loyal and cute pets in a story always adds a certain element to the story. Plus, I love dogs. The love and hate relationship between Sheriff Pickron and Mac is also very amusing. It seems like Mac tests the sheriff's very limited patience and knows how to push the wrong buttons of the sheriff. I feel sorry for the sheriff, yet in a way felt he deserves it also.

And I just love this quote. I am hoping I could use this sentence in real life. But it would go like this. "What right has my asthmatic lungs have to tell your liver what to do?" I don't smoke and I don't drink, so my only right to claim for authenticity to the statement is my having hereditary asthma.

What right does my liver have to tell your lungs what to do?

Oh, what a tangled web we weave when we first practice to deceive.

For all of my reviews: www.readingbetweenthepagesblog.wordpr...

This is book four in the Mac McClellan Mystery series. Anyone who knows me knows I do not read books out of order, but I was assured that it reads well as a standalone and I’m happy to say it does.

Mac McClellan was a marine for 24 years. Two years ago he left that life behind and has been a private investigator for the past year working for Hightower Investigations. Kate Bell is Mac’s girlfriend and works at Gillman’s Marina. Her Uncle Frank is the owner of Hightower Investigations.

The book opens with Mac and Kate investigating the Navarro Hotel to see if it’s haunted. Mac is one of the newer members of the Palmetto Paranormal Society. He’s not really into the whole ghost hunting thing and would rather be home watching the Braves play the Nationals, but he loves Kate and is there to support her. The society members have broken off into pairs and are investigating each floor of the hotel. A scream, from another floor, is heard and Mac rushes to see what has happened and finds Dr. Ernest Bagwell at the bottom of the staircase…dead.

The Palmetto Paranormal Society is shaken up by the doctor’s death, but no one more so than his girlfriend Stella Crawford. The Society regroups and takes in a new member, Will Ingersoll, who replaces Dr. Ernest Bagwell as president. Under the leadership of Will the society members set out on another ghost hunt at the old lighthouse on Five Mile Island. There have been reports of a lady wearing a flowing white dress and they are excited to investigate. While investigating the lighthouse, Kate sees Stella silently fall, from a higher floor, over a four foot rail to her death. Mac can’t believe that these two deaths could both be accidental, so he decides to take matters into his own hands and investigates further.

If paranormal mysteries are not your thing, don’t let that shy you away from this book. Essentially, this is just a good old-fashioned mystery. I feel like this book is a huge mystery puzzle that’s been thrown up into the air and has shattered all over the place and now Mac is left to put all the pieces back together. There are quite a few moving parts to this mystery and a lot of characters – it can be a bit confusing at times, so one needs to be paying close attention.

Mac says it best when he remembers the verse from Sir Walter Scott’s epic “Marmion.”

Oh, what a tangled web we weave
When first we practice to deceive

Mac is smart, inquisitive, and has a good sense of humor about him. He’s a bit of a ladies man and I didn’t think it was necessary to hear his thoughts of every woman he runs into, especially about their physical appearance. That being said I did enjoy this book. E. Michael Helms has an easy-going writing style and the book kept me interested throughout while I was trying to figure out how this mystery puzzle would all fit together in the end.

Just when this mystery seems like it’s all wrapped up, E. Michael Helms throws in one little twist at the end that I didn’t see coming. That was a fun surprise!

Thank you E. Michael Helms for my review copy to read for my honest opinion.

This is the first book I’ve read by Mr. Helms, and it won’t be the last. I thoroughly enjoyed this quintessential private eye story and the interplay of paranormal that simmers in the background. True to the crime mystery genre, Deadly Spirits contained a hard-edged, wise-cracking PI fond of alcohol, food, beautiful women, and a list of unscrupulous characters linked to crimes and mysterious murders in a small coastal community. Mac McClelland, ex-marine turned Private Investigator, cast witty idioms as often as he casts an eye at women, but Mac’s only love is for his girlfriend, Kate, and his constant canine companion, Henry.

Since Mac joined the Palmetto Paranormal Society at the request of his girlfriend, members start dropping like flies. Murders, Mac sets out to solve, are more intricate than they first appear. During his Investigation, he uncovers blackmail, infidelities, sexual abuse, seduction, and a cold-case mystery reopens with an inkling of the supernatural. Mr. Helms crafts a tightly woven plot with several subplots weaved with twists and turns that leave the reader guessing to the end.

Deadly Spirits takes place in a coastal town that’s dear to my heart, the Florida Panhandle. Written beautifully in the first person POV, Mr. Helm’s prose is so descriptive, the reader will sense balmy, salty breezes, and winged wildlife swooping in and around the coastal community. Mr. Helm’s novel is a gastronomic feast of American fare and alcohol that will make you hungry and crave a beer or two. Dining and drinking is as much a part of the story as the murderous mayhem. I pondered, whether Mac’s meeting with clients and suspects over meals was a modus of acquiring information. Alcohol and a good meal will loosen tight lips.

Deadly Spirits is a fast-paced, page-turner I couldn’t put down. The pacing was perfect for a murder mystery, with just the right action and more twists and turns than the tornado threatening Palmetto County’s shores. The story climax with one surprise after the next, culminating in a shocking conclusion I didn’t see coming. The ending was satisfying, but I question whether Mac is now a true believer In the paranormal? Hmm… perhaps. I highly recommend Mr. Helms book to everyone, and anyone looking for a great Private Eye, whodunit murder mystery. Mr. Helms, thank you for the fantastic read!

PI Mac is pulled into an investigation of the unknown.  What happens when ghosts tell secrets?  Well Mac is sceptical about the thought of ghosts being real.  But hey when his girlfriend is into it he figures he can give it a try to, right?  But what happens when people start dying during these ghost haunts?  Mac has a mystery on his hands and it is full of lies, adultery and danger.  Can Mac figure out the who and why before it is too late?

This is my first book by Michael that I have read and I must say it was a good one.  Full of twists and danger.  I had a very hard time figuring out who done it and even when I thought I had it all figured out, bam!  I was wrong.  A page turner full of mystery and deceit.  I had a hard time figuring out the motive and was definitely surprised towards the end.  There was way more involved than I originally thought.

The characters in this book are very interesting and entertaining.  That Mac is a stud.  All the ladies want a piece of Mac, but he is true to his feelings for his girlfriend Kate.  I love his character.  He is loyal, brave and a complete smart ass.  Let us not forget Henry.  Man I love that dog!  He is amazing.

Even though I have not read any of the other books, I was able to enjoy this book and not feel at a total loss.  It refers to other mishaps and danger Mac and Kate have encountered in the other books, but it was not one of those that had a lot of missing information so I was able to read it as a standalone.  I enjoyed Michael's writing style.  It is slow and steady build up without rushing to the finish line.  His characters are well-developed and he is good at keeping you guessing and turning the pages.  I love a good ghost story and am a big fan of Victoria Laurie books.  This book reminded me a bit of those.  A good cozy mystery of who done it with a little dose of paranormal mixed in.  Great combinations.

If you a looking for a cozy mystery with some danger and ghosts, then this book is right up your alley.

This is the 4th book in the Mac McClellan series, I wished I would've started from the beginning.   The book says it can be read as a stand alone, and most people who have read it as a stand alone have no problems with it at all like that, however I think because I did read it as a stand alone, I missed my character connection with Mac.  He always referred back to a previous time that something happened.  I really wanted know about that previous time.

Mac as a character is really enjoyable, he has the knack of a private eye, but a very enjoyable banter when it comes to talking with people.  He seems like he gets along with everyone around him.  I really enjoy the fact that like every red blooded male he can see that a woman is attractive without being all like "what girlfriend, who me I didn't have a girlfriend??"  He is very loyal to those in his circle including his girlfriend so far as to join her little ghost hunting club.  Of course he is very suspicious about ghosts but when bodies start piling he has to put on his PI pants.

I loved all the characters in this book, the good, the bad, and the ugly.  The dog of course was my favorite, with Mac's GF coming in a very close second. I wouldn't say much evolving happened in this book itself as it is a series.  He may have been evolving the whole series.  I did love the mystical aspect of ghosts on top of they actual aspect of "who done it??"

Mac McClellan is a war veteran and practicing Private Investigator. He has recently been dragged along to do some investigating with the Palmetto Paranormal Society with his girlfriend Kate. When two subsequent paranormal investigations end with the mysterious death of two investigators, Mac knows something is up; these are more than unfortunate accidents. After he is officially hired to investigate one of the deaths, Mac begins to notice several things that aren't sitting right in town: a previous insurance fraud case that is continuously being harassed, generous donations to a local college from people who do not have the money to give, a separate PI that is tailing him, a ghostly recording that has gone missing, several more near-deaths and a woman in the Paranormal Society who isn't who she says she is. Now, it's up to Mac to piece the clues together before more people die and to decide whether the forces at play are of the normal or paranormal variety.

This book immediately starts with action and really does not stop until the end. After reading the first few pages, I realized that this book was part of a series, however; I was filled in pretty quickly and I didn't feel like I really needed the rest of the books in order to understand everything. It might have been helpful to understand a little more about Mac's history, but that's about it. I was really impressed with the layers of mystery and was wondering to the end about how they all fit together. I also really enjoyed the incorporation of the paranormal; the investigative techniques were really interesting and Mac's skepticism provided a nice contrast. Mac's character was intriguing as well, at first he seemed very typical and one dimensional, but as the story progressed, I learned more of his true character and really enjoyed his interaction with people and especially his dog. Overall, this seems like a great mystery series and I would love to read more of Mac!

This book was received for free in return for an honest review.

In DEADLY SPIRITS, the latest volume in the Mac McClellan Mystery series by E. Merged review:

With a plot like a Rubik’s Cube, DEADLY SPIRITS, yanks the reader into a vortex of deception. The new volume in the Mac McClellan mystery series by E. Michael Helms sports silky prose and witty dialogue that threads through the gritty action. Mac’s girlfriend Kate presses him to join the Palmetto Paranormal Society. A series of trips to decrepit structures seems likely to produce contact with the “spirit world” and leads to murder and mayhem. In the first haunt hunt Mac feels ridiculous as he follows Kate through a doorway into an old hotel attic. He ducks to avoid cracking his forehead and pulls cobwebs from his beard as he brushes away dust. This won’t be the first time he is in danger of receiving a split skull. Bodies plummet and perish in mysterious mishaps during and after spook hunts. Mac’s Marine combat experience tells him there is more going on than a spirit rampage and he looks for suspects and a motive for the would be suicides, accidents and OD’s. His list includes an array of luscious, devious beauties who all seem to have an eye for Mac and his Devil Dog Doberman Henry who Mac concludes is a “chick magnet”. He is paid to investigate the carnage by one of the gorgeous, possibly guilty lovelies and is assisted on the Q.T. by Dakota Owens, a curvaceous police officer previously in the McClellan series. As Mac investigates things begin blowing up around him frequently. Explosions and gunplay follow wherever he goes. The Palmetto Paranormal Society begins to thin out and the layered plot races along like a deadly diamondback. Kate’s interest in the paranormal ends in a hair raising, goose bump filled climax that occurs in the middle of a hurricane and reveals some chilling, gory, and ghastly facts. The books ending is satisfying to the reader and Mac hesitantly considers the possibility that there may be more things in heaven and earth than is dreamed of in his philosophy.
