Unbreakable: My life with Paul Hunter. A story of extraordinary love, loss and courage.

Rate this book
Unbreakable tells Lindsey Hunter's moving and heartbreaking story. Lindsey is the widow of snooker star Paul Hunter, who died tragically aged only 27 in October 2006 after a battle with cancer, leaving Lindsey and their one year-old daughter Evie bereft and alone. Lindsey met Paul Hunter when she was 21 and he was 18. When they married seven years later, Paul had become a golden boy in the world of snooker, dubbed 'the Beckham of the baize, ' having won the Masters trophy three times, and attained a world ranking of number four, and Lindsey's happiness looked assured. But tragedy struck when Paul was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer, neuro-endocrine tumours in his abdomen. Aggressive chemotherapy appeared to work, and within six months Paul was competing in a major championship, with Lindsey cheering him on from the side-lines. More joy came when Lindsey gave birth to their daughter, Evie Rose. But tragically, Paul died in October 2006, 18 months after his diagnosis, leaving Lindsey a widow and single mother. Lindsey was determined to celebrate Paul's life rather than mourn his death, and has dealt with the loss of her young husband on the beginning of their life together with strength and courage, for the sake of their daughter. This is not just a heartbreaking and inspirational story about LIndsey and Paul's unbreakable love but a testimony to one of the greatest sportsmen the snooker world has ever seen.

A heartbreaking read - makes you remember to appreciate every moment of your life and to live it to the full because you never know what may happen.
Paul Hunter was a fantastic snooker player at the top of his game and would defintely have went on to even greater things if it wasn't for this horrendous disease.

He, his wife and his young daughter are an inspiration and I think he will always be remembered for being the friendly, happy, talented guy he was.

A life cut short but his memory will live on for sure!

This is a story of love and courage in what were difficult circumstances. It's a very well written book and very sad that he lost his fight in the end. I recommend this book but suggest keeping those tissues handy

Heartbreaking, it was like an emotional rollercoaster. I have found it hard to review this book. I want to say it was great but I also wish it hadn't been written, by that I mean I wish Lindsey, Paul and Evie didn't have to suffer in the first place. All in all it was well written making you appreciate how quick life can be and that we need to appreciate what we have and when are time comes be brave.

Lindsey met Paul Hunter when she was 21 and he was 18. When they married seven years later, Paul had become a golden boy in the world of snooker, dubbed ‘the Beckham of the baize,’ having won the Masters trophy three times, and attained a world ranking of number four, and Lindsey's happiness looked assured. But tragedy struck when Paul was diagnosed with a rare type of cancer.

I have no idea where to even start with this review. As an avid snooker fan from a very early age, I watched Paul Hunter play snooker in awe. Young, talented, nice looking and interesting to watch, I was devastated when I heard he had died at such a young age. I remember thinking how awful it must be for his young wife and baby, and what brave fight he had fought, playing snooker almost to the end. Then I read this book.....and cried!

In 'Unbreakable', Lindsey tells the story of how she met, and eventually married Paul, and how their short but beautiful time together unfolded. She describes Paul's larger than life character, lust for life, passion for snooker and cheeky yet humble personality in the way that only one who is closest to someone could. The way in which she describes the months of chemo, shrouded in darkness, only to discover that Evie Rose is about to make her appearance is so beautiful it moved me to tears (not for the first time). Considering this book was written fairly soon after Paul's untimely passing, the humility and tenderness with which she portrays his final, agonising hours is truly beautiful.

Paul Hunter was a Snooker Prodigy, a bubbling pot of immense potential, torn away too soon. The world lost an incredible sportsman on 09.10.2006, but Lindsey and Evie lost a husband and father, and Paul's family a son, brother, uncle and cousin. That said, I could not think of a more beautiful tribute than this. I have so much respect for Lindsey for finding the courage to write, I cannot imagine how difficult it must have been. I only wish I had read it earlier.

Sleep tight, Paul.

This book is well written and very touching. However I got pissed off at how stupid humans can be and do things that end up hurting themselves, from not breastfeeding their child because 'boobs are a sex thing' which made me so angry I put the book down for a while. And then how frustrated you get when Paul slacks off on the program that was healing him and then he gets worse! I mean come on!! It was working and he just stopped because he wanted to smoke.
That aside, I cried and cried reading his final days but frustrated because this was a death that did NOT need to happen when it did and happened when it did because of their own poor choices.
