Read this in high school before I went into the military. If you like military stories, this is a GREAT read. Non fiction and very well written, it's funny, terrifying, and heart breaking all wrapped up in one book.

For a guy who wanted nothing to do with combat in Vitenam, but also didn't want to dodge the draft, this poor SOB ended up at the tip of the spear and neck deep in some of the darkest compbat of that war.

His incredible story of how he got there and the mere handful of missions he writes about in the book made this one of my favorite books about the war in Vietnam and the soldiers who fought there.

I found this to be an enjoyable book. I have come across articles on the internet as to whether this book was actually based on true events or not. This was not something I was concerned with. It was published as fiction, so I wasn't looking for a text book. I found it well written and entertaining, it held my attention, and as to whether it was based on real memoirs or not, I don't know. I do recommend this book as being readable, believable, and interesting.

Supposedly based pretty carefully on true materials. But it is identified as a novel. Decent but not great.
