Both genetic and environmental factors play important roles in one?s life. Genetics remains a fixed entity, whereas environment is a variable. Environmental experiences in life can have a positive or negative influence upon the genetic makeup of a given individual. Decision-making in the preschool environment is predominantly controlled by parents. Eventually, the individual, being influenced by the many past environmental factors, becomes the responsible choice maker as to which path in life he/she wishes to travel. It is my belief that it is providential that one is given these experiences to aid in our decision-making. This concept was supported by five of the physicians who shared their stories (chapter 10). All were greatly influenced by role models whom they encountered in their earlier life. This influence factor is not a single event, but a continuum. This forms the basis of the concept that the making of a physician is not a one-time event but represents a continuum. For some of us, becoming a physician was understood as a calling. The stories in this book were shared so that others may develop a greater appreciation of their own environmental experiences and consider them as influential factors in the decision-making of their lives. It is also my hope that this book might be of positive help to the young person considering the medical profession as his or her vocation.
This is an excellent book. At times the writing was a little "clunky" but overall fantastic message. It is written from a Christian perspective. My mine interest in this book was that I am currently considering becoming an MD. This book helped give me that clarity. Thanks to Dr. Graber for writing it.
The Making of a Physician is a captivating autobiography written by Harry L. Graber, M.D. F.A.C.C.. In his book the author addresses why he chose his career and the people that influenced and shaped his career today. Graber makes an interesting connection between these choices and our DNA, exploring the nature vs. nurture debate, coming to the conclusion that he was meant to become a physician.
In his journey to retirement Graber describes interactions he had with patients that shaped his career outlook. In addition to his own story, he also includes interesting anecdotes from doctors that he knows, providing their perspective on the central question; ‘are you satisfied with your career choices’?
This fascinating biography will be incredibly helpful and insightful for any student of medicine, or anyone beginning their career in that field. Graber details many reasons why he chose the medical field and the fulfilling nature of becoming a doctor. This book will also be beneficial for jaded doctors, as the author gives them reasons to continue with their practice, showing them just how much they contribute to society.
I also this think is a fantastic book for anyone who is looking for a detailed and compelling look at someone that has built a substantial career. Graber provides readers who are not in the medical field an inside look from a doctor’s perspective, allowing the reader to better understand physicians and the sacrifices they go through. The author is straightforward with his stories, not using much medical terminology to confuse his readers, which makes this story easy to read and accessible to a wide audience.
The Making of a Physician: This Was My Calling is a enlightening memoir that explores a fascinating concept on the influences in our lives and how they shape up.
This is an interesting book by a renowned physician. It tells the story of his decision to become a doctor when he was teaching school— and the life journey he took to achieve his goal. Included are some other doctor's stories. My only reason to give it three stars instead of four is that the writing is rather like a textbook. I'd have liked it to be a bit more like a story than a report. I did like that he included the sacrifices his family (wife and children) made while he worked so hard.
an unusual book. Portions of it were interesting--especially how he made a decision to go into the medical field when he was a teacher. Also interesting to see how things have changed from the 70s until the present time. I did read the entire book--however, at some times, I had to force myself to continue reading. He did have a positive impact of many lives.
A very inspirational book about a man's struggles in life as a child and also with his father. He did a wonderful job as a teacher and an even better one as a doctor. He takes the reader step by step to becoming a well known cardiologist.
Dr. Garber is first a Christian who was called to serve Christ via the hi Specialized Work, in the community of Logan County, BELLEFONTAINE, OH. It was no mistake that he answered God's call as an answered prayer of his Mother. God does have a way of getting His work done via people who pray with ears open to His Voice. I thank God that I had the opportunity to walk briefly in his shadow and be inspired by he and this book.
This book is basically a personal memoir of the author. It goes through his life and the things that lead him to become a physician. Being in the medical field myself, I thought it would be a lot more interesting.
