Each aspect of the plan (meals and exercise) is detailed on a day by day, exercise by exercise basis. The history of success that has accompanied the SMaRT plan includes a 10 pound fat loss and an 8 pound increase in muscle and bone tissue in just 5 weeks. Dr. Ben calls this method a “A Five Week Metabolic Makeover”. “That is really what all dieters and exercisers are really “Changing Metabolism” says Dr. Ben. “From fat “storer” to fat “burner” in 5 weeks” is the motto of 15 Minutes to Fitness .
I’m aware that women in their 40s lose a certain percentage of muscle mass every year. I don’t want to lose strength as I get older so I’ve recommitted to doing strength training again. I used to be religious about it but stopped doing it for a while because life!
I came across Dr. Ben speaking about strength training in a podcast and since then, I’ve adopted Dr. Ben’s strength training program and I have to say that it’s the most sustainable program I’ve ever tried. I started in late August, 2x a week (Wednesdays and Sundays) and I’ve since felt a difference in my strength and find his program so easy to incorporate into my lifestyle. It’s simple to follow and very effective. You can really feel a difference when you perform the exercise slowly and at a challenging weight. After I do the seven exercises, I also do deadlifts and I’ve gone up in weight after a month of doing that as well. The stretching exercises he suggests you do make me feel so good after my workout that I’ve started doing them too on days when I’m not lifting.

Starts off slow with a LOT of background info (and sales pitch?) But once he gets to the meat of his SMaRT plan, everything presented is simple, clear, and actionable. Perhaps it’s a limitation of the kindle reader, but there are many tables of information presented as IMAGES, hence they aren’t searchable, highlightable, etc. This is too bad, and the reason I deducted one star.
Useful information but nothing really new. If you have read books on insulin resistance and low carb subjects, nothing in this book is new. I was expecting to find some revolutionary discoveries here but I would say there was nothing different here than what you would read in any other books on the subject. The exception? His methods of slow training, which I intend to try because I do believe it is useful and time saving.
Excellent combination of achievable diet and exercise
Low carb and slow weight training sums it up. Science based with a huge bibliography but I wish he had embedded the science rather than just saying there was good science (and having to look at the bibliography). Great book that I recommend if you are looking to lose fat and/or gain muscle.
4.5 stars. If you want to learn more about gaining muscle, working out efficiently, and the ketogenic diet then this is your book. Bocchicchio has a PhD in exercise science and knows what he is talking about. I refer to this book often and it has helped me lose 12 lbs and get stronger in 5 weeks.
This adds the “exercise” element to good fat burning health. What is exercise? Dr. Bo explains and once understood is a big help to improve my routine. It will change my life going forward.
