This is a Russian language edition. Very hard to find in the States. Cover and spine are excellent however there are nine pages where the previous owner made a fold over bookmark on the top corner of the page about 1/4" sized. Does not injure the quality or beauty of the book. I think it adds a bit of interesting history to this copy. Probably hand carried home from a visit to the Hermitage.
The State Hermitage Museum (Russian: Государственный Эрмитаж, romanized: Gosudarstvennyj Ermitaž) located in St. Petersburg, is one of the world's largest and oldest museums, founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great.
Located along the Neva River, it holds over three million items, including Western European art, Egyptian antiquities, and Russian imperial treasures, housed in five historic buildings, including the Winter Palace
(Paperback) Apart from a few pages at the beginning pertaining to the buildings and the history of the Hermitage, the bulk of this book is comprised of pages dedicated to the museum's treasures. Of those, almost all are paintings, apart from a few pages at the back. The photos are all of top quality, and layout is agreeable enough, although quite a lot of the paintings do span the gap down the middle between the pages making it difficult to appreciate them fully. Although the text at the beginning is perfectly well-written and translated, and the captions to each exhibit are faultless, for such a large important museum, and a reasonable-sized book, I would've expected a little more reading material herein; perhaps a few more details on exhibits, and a little more variety in those exhibits featured. I would like to visit the Hermitage if only to see the buildings, but as to the exhibits, this book hardly whetted my appetite. I read it in very little time at all. 3.75/5
