The Wolf of Winterthorne

Rate this book
Logan Ambrose has endured a tortured existence. After learning how to fend for himself at a young age, he eventually amassed power and wealth. His fortune came at an extreme cost, as rising from poverty often does. Branded, he wears his sins on his marred flesh. Each scar represents a past he doesn't wish to remember, the ruthless man he holds at bay, the tortured soul who would do anything to survive. Bruised, battered and bloodied, Arabella Sutton is a woman lost. With no recollection of who she is or what terrors she suffered, she stumbles onto the imposing Winterthorne estate running from those who hunt her, haunted by the memory of her bloodied hands holding a blade and wearing a bracelet monogrammed with the initial S. When she stumbles into Logan’s arms, he recognizes her instantly. She is one of two women he once Arabella or her twin sister, Sybil. One he dared to love years ago, though he now despises them equally. Logan recognizes her bracelet as belonging to Sybil … the last woman he wished to see. While Arabella must overcome the loss of her memories, she is drawn to the brooding and menacing master of Winterthorne who knows much more about her past than he is willing to admit. Meanwhile, Logan is assailed with memories of his lost love while offering protection to the woman he believes to be her vicious twin, the woman who once reveled in making his life miserable, all the while fighting against the strong attraction that pulls him towards his charge and the reminders of Arabella that she rekindles in his hardened heart. As Arabella pieces together her past, scandalous secrets come to light and Logan will stop at nothing to save his beloved from the dangerous machinations of her evil identical twin. Together, Logan and Arabella rekindle a romance they long thought extinguished. Meanwhile, they concoct a grand scheme to unmask Sybil and rescue Arabella from her sister’s misdeeds. Can they protect Arabella from peril and assure their future before it is too late?

Arabella and Logan

Logan Ambrose has risen from having nothing to amassing great wealth. He lives isolated on his estate, Winterthorne, in Northamptonshire. Until one evening when a bloody and bruised woman stumbles into his arms. He recognizes the woman as Arabella Sutton; however, the bracelet on her arm identifies this same woman as her evil identical twin sister, Sybil. Logan despises them both.

Arabella has lost her memory. All she sees is bloody hands and a knife. What has she done that she can't remember? A man named Logan takes her to his estate and promises to protect her from whoever is chasing her. Arabella doesn't know whether she can trust Logan. After all she knows she's being pursued but she doesn't know by whom. Arabella and Logan strive to find the answers to their many questions. Can Logan protect her from her pursuers? Will Arabella get her memories back in time to save herself and the precious new love she has found?

The novel is over written. It probably could have used a rewrite for the late three chapters. I can see the need to project internal conflict to internal and external motivation, but there is a point were the scenes can be redundant. It sags the middle. The characters were fine. The plot has enough twists to hold the reader's attention. I feel this book did well as a standalone, but I also feel I would have benefited from reading books one, two and three.

Glad this book ended. Not my favorite by a long shot! (audible review)

Wow there was so much inner dialogue going on in this book it was driving me crazy! Talk to each other! It was also a bit repetitive and my least favorite of the series by a mile!.

I liked the characters and the story line. I just didn't like all the serious lack of dialogue between the characters. The dialogue did pick up after about 65% but still. Too little too late for my taste.

As for the narration I like Susan Duerden, The men sound like men and everyone gets their own distinct voice. You always get that sing song narration voice, but I am used to it.

Interesting plot twists

What one reviewer called lush I often found overwritten and generic. It’s rather over the top Gothic. There is more than sensuality. Lots of explicit sex, for those who pref we to know. The plot is twisty, but the characters are one dimensional. The good are idealised, as are repentant sinners, and the bad are positively psychopathic. And I’ve rarely read such a long, drawn out conclusion.
It kept me reading but I’m not buying the rest of the series.

Kept me riveted

This story kept me riveted throughout. I must admit that this is the first book in this series that I have read but I definitely intend to read the others. Though I was able to follow Logan and Arabella's story, I think reading the previous books would have filled in some facts so I would suggest reading them in order. Nevertheless, I still enjoyed this book tremendously and highly recommend it.

Logan Ambrose has led a very different life that from others. As he learned to take care of himself, he finally managed to amass power and fortune.
Bruised, battered and bloodied, Arabella Sutton is lost. Has no recollection as to who she is. As she attempts to elude those who are tracking her she stumbles upon Winterthorne.
She stumbles into Logan's arms, he does recognize her and she is one or the other, Twin sisters and he hopes she is not Sybil, but the bracelet she wears is that belonging to Sybil, and she is the last woman he wants to see again.
While Arabella tries to overcome the loss of her memories, she also finds herself drawn to Logan, who seems to know a lot about her past, more then he is willing to admit,
As Arabella pieces together her past, scandalous secrets come to light and Logan will stop at nothing to save his beloved from her evil twin sister. They as she manages little by little remember her past they rekindle their a romance that they both thought was extinct.
Will Logan save Arabella will their love flourish, will they defeat her twin sister, read the book, it's a grand story full of adventure, love and yes even sex. Well writen and I loved all 4 books of this series by Tracy Goodwin.

DNF at 40%

Evil Twin. There is an evil twin.

I just can't.

Also I had to stop because it couldn't keep my interest. I tried. Long commute on audio tried. Still I found myself scanning the radio for something else to listen to after about 20 min. -- not a promising sign.

It seemed familiar, in an "I've read something similar and think I had similar trouble" kind of way.

I went back and found out that I had read another book in this series and almost DNF that one and ended up only giving it 2 stars. Clearly this author and I just don't jive. No blame on anyone's part - sometimes the reader/writer chemistry just isn't there. Ms. Goodwin and I just are not a good fit.

No rating as I don't think I can be fair.

Arrabella is running for her life with no memory of who she is. Logan finds her and decides that she is her twin sister because of the bracelet she wares. Much trauma has been caused by her sister. To keep all safe something must be done about the sister. The plot thickens as the two sisters each try to get the upper hand.

A promising premise that made this romance more than that -- a typical romance. But unlike the first three titles where the relationships themselves were more complicated (and yes, there was considerably more dialogue beyond the three words "I love you"), this book was resting on the plot which ended up being pretty facile. One of my biggest problems is that the book ended at least 3 times with chapters 17-20 being totally unnecessary. This book seemed to be a real after-thought from the first 3 in the series, a way to extend a very successful series. But in the end, I don't think it really succeeded. Goodwin is a good writer, and I hope to see more and better in the future.

The storyline is good enough to make me hang on till I finished the book. But the dialogue between the hero and the heroine, Logan and Arabella, were so repetitive, it was tedious, from halfway till the end, their endless declaration of their love to each other was grating on my nerves. The plot was good though, so it wasn't completely a waste of my time.

This book held such promise. It started out with a woman lost, battered and rising from a fall to just realizing she is being chased through the woods with no memory. Exciting, right?

Unfortunately this is the only interesting part of the book. And it takes a turn for the ridiculous that includes an Evil twin sister and a dumb hero and heroine. Logan, the hero, couldn’t even figure out that the woman with amnesia traipsing across his remote estate (how convenient that her pursuers were bumbling idiots who just so happened to stop there of all places for a break and she escaped) is his beloved Bella. Instead, he sits wondering which sister is in his home. Really? He finally decides on the wrong twin because of a bracelet she is wearing. That makes sense (sarcasm alert). Let’s not go by personality or the fact if you have more than a passing acquaintance you might be able to differentiate between them. He and Bella were in love. And he couldn’t tell them apart? I find that far fetched.

I won’t spoil it but let me just say there’s a lot of navel gazing and continuous vows of love...wash, rinse; repeat..So, in the style of the book I just read, let me do a bit of repetition of my own....Logan was boring and stupid and spent way too much time thinking about how his childhood poverty and his actions in war (which remained a mystery of what those actions actually were) made him not good enough for the angelic Arabella.

As to his love, she is simpering and dull and allows her sister, the evil twin Sybil, to walk all over her and Logan. Bella never says a word to her sister when Sybil makes fun of Logan. That doesn’t make her sweet like the author keeps telling you. And, the book never explains why Bella never bothered to seek out Logan to find out what happened or to reconcile with him all those years ago. So he still can’t tell the sisters apart and she sufferers in silence not taking up for her beloved or even bother going to him to explain what happened. Epic love there...eye roll.

But now they are together and the strapping hero must save and protect his beloved who he doesn’t deserve. So Logan concocts a plan that would never work in real life unless Sybil was as dim witted as they were. Sigh. The ending was stupid and sticky sweet. Kill me now Really I would have liked it better had the evil twin killed them both before they could reproduce!

This story is about a character that was introduced back in Book 2. Logan is Colin's best friend and war buddy in India. Logan takes the riches he received while in India and bought the estate Winterthorne. One night he finds a woman injured and distressed running through his woods. He recognizes her as one of the twins; he grew up with when he was young. Sophie who he considered the evil twin, and knew of her manipulations of the ton as an opera singer. Arabella, the woman who broke his heart. He knew not which, but rescued the woman regardless of who she was. The woman awakes not remembering who she is. The story gets really complicated from here and the twists that this story takes makes me love this book and our two main characters. This is the final book in the series and truly ends with the most satisfying ending of all the books in this series.

If you like soap operas...

Often overwrought with a surfeit of over sentimentalized, repetitive dialog in soap opera like scenes along with some plot elements left hanging, made for a reading experience that was more challenging trial than anticipated pleasure. Add to that some editing lapses that made me cringe and you have a book that just wasn’t fun to read especially when you consider the three or four chapters after the big climax that were wholly unnecessary. One well written chapter would have wrapped it up nicely.

Bottom line: This book was a test of will to finish.

This should have been better. So much repetition. You could fill six chapters alone with all the "I love you. I love you. Then, now, and forever." All the ruminations about Sybil. All the inner dialogue.

And yet when it came down to action, it was sparse and played out too quickly. The big event at the end to trap Sybil? All the planning seemed to happen behind the scenes, and the actual ball must have been over in like 30 minutes. And then we got another two or three chapters of I love yous.

What should have been a tense Gothic thriller was just... meh. The best part of it was the house full of wolves (want).

So much going on in this book!

We've got both amnesia and evil twin/good twin tropes here, and it's enough to make poor Logan's head spin! This author does an amazing job of keeping it all sorted while drawing out the mystery as Logan and Bella fall in love - again - despite the machinations of her sister. Logan is a swoon-worthy hero, though he's never going to be good enough for sweet Bella. Good thing she loves him anyway! I've greatly enjoyed the previous books in this series, and this one was every bit as enthralling.

I loved this story! One of the best love stories I have ever read! I’m so glad that they found each other again, so sad that her sister was so cruel, but I really enjoyed reading this book, it truly is great and I recommend it very much, will keep reading your books, you are a great writer, thank you!

My kinda book

This is what I require in a good book. It had a good plot. Not just a few paragraphs strung together as an excuse for explicit sex scenes ad nauseium. Also a cast of interesting characters who actually contributed to the story. Sex and romance without being disgusting. Fealty,Love and loyalty displayed as desirable attributes. And, a really good plot. The

Started out interesting but fell flat. All the build up and then how the author handled the "evil" protagonist was a huge let down. The last section of the book was too long and detailed.
Parts of this book had me interested but then lost me with the choice to not go all in and follow through. Turned into a fluff book.

Great read

I love the are developed by this author. This is the 3rd one I have read and so enjoyed them all. My eyes have shed tears with the characters as they struggled through the bad times and then my lips smiled as they rejoiced in their survival and loved their family and friends. Thank you Tracy.

The Wolf of Winterthorne: Scandalous Secrets, Book 4

The love story of Logan and Arabella. Logan find a woman running for her life. He knows her. She could be Arabella or Sybila. He thing she is Sybila but she is not acting like the woman he hates. He is following in love with her. She has no memory of who she is. Is she Sybila or Arabella, who wants her dead? Great story.

Triumph of good

Really interesting characters with in-depth issues. Had not read the first 3 books before this one, but it was easily understood. The story of twins, one good, while the other evil. The story plays out well

Enjoyed the story and probably would have given it four stars but for the last three or four chapters, which I didn't feel were necessary to the book.

Light on the romance and intimacy with suspense driving the storyline, The Wolf of Winterthorne is a well-written tale.

This book was very well written and had a good story plot but the material was so repetitious in the romance scenes. I just thumbed through paragraphs when they were just too much.

I enjoyed reading this book about Logan Ambrose and
Arabella Sutton. Bella has a twin sister by the name of Sybil Sutton. This book starts out with a mystery. I think that it should be read instead of long review .
Happy Reading!!!!
