In Extra Time, the Eleventh Doctor and his friends head to the 1966 World Cup final. While the Doctor and Amy discover that the Time Lord isn't the only alien visiting Wembley, Rory finds himself playing a crucial role in this historic England vs. West Germany football match . . .
Richard has written over forty books for children and began his writing career as an in-house author, working on non-fiction, first at Usborne Publishing, and later at Ladybird Books. Since going freelance, he has created original stories to support a wide range of exciting licensed properties such as Doctor Who; Wallace and Gromit; Transformers; MI High; Captain Scarlet and The Incredibles. Richard lives in Leicestershire with his wife and two young children. Richard's rather unfortunate surname comes from a village in South Yorkshire, where his ancestors lived. It means 'a dwelling with dried cow pats for roofing'.
I was pleasantly surprised with this book. As any footy fan would be. Conveniently reading it during Euro 2021 it got me even more excited at the reality of England beating Germany in the round of 16. Hopefully this review isn't immediately outdated tomorrow (July 3rd) if I say ITS COMING HOME!
Rory's plotline was definitely the highlight of the book , I really enjoyed the "Da Goalsky" moment. I'll have to look for more of these YA novels in the future, easy yet pleasant reads that they seem to be.
This YA novel is on par with a solid late-70s Terrance Dicks Target novel: simple, uncomplicated, straightforward storytelling. The alien invasion plot is fairly run-of-the-mill, but the World Cup setting and the superb character work with the 11th Doctor, Amy & Rory result in a very pleasant, if undemanding, read. I would love to read a full length "Doctor Who" novel written by Richard Dungworth; he certainly demonstrates a deft command of the TARDIS crew.
The Doctor, Amy and Rory turn up at the World Cup final that England won in 1966. Only - of course- there are problems facing them, including an invasion of leeches from outer space... Decent enough, though as I'm not a soccer fan, I'm probably missing a lot.
Extra Time (Doctor Who: Eleventh Doctor Adventures #10) by Richard Dungworth would probably be more fun if I was interested in soccer (or just sports generally speaking), but I did appreciate how this is still pretty accessible. Plus, I was able to look up some of the people in real life just to put names to some of the faces. Also, Rory is one of my favorite Doctor Who characters so it was nice to see him get a win.
