No female directors included at all. Cleo From 5 to 7, Beau Travail, One Sings- the Other Doesn’t, The Virgin Suicides, etc. would’ve been worthy inclusions. The near dismissal of Birth of a Nation’s racism is also frustrating.

A few other noticeable omissions:
Roman Holiday
12 Angry Men
Network
GoodFellas
Eraserhead
The Godfather: Part II
Rushmore
The Big Lebowski
Fargo
Toy Story
Do the Right Thing
The Shining
Videodrome
Alien
All the President’s Men
Dog Day Afternoon
The Apartment
Seconds
Throne of Blood
Rear Window
The Wizard of Oz
A Trip to the Moon
8 1/2
Rome, Open City
The Decalogue
Berlin Alexanderplatz

The selection presented is quite good, though. I was pleased to see the inclusion of Le Charme Discret de la Bourgeoisie, as well as 400 Blows, La Dolce Vita, Pierrot Le Fou, Chungking Express, etc. It’s a good mix of the IMDb-top-250 kind of films and less well-known movies.

The Title: I don’t get the title, 100 all-time favorite movies. Of whom? Of the film critics? Of the editor? Of the filmmakers? Of the public? There is no introduction why this book was made and why these specific 100 films were being selected. Of course there are a lot of really good movies missing (The Big Lebowski, Alien, E.T., The Nightmare before Christma) and also some of these movies are disputable as an all-time favorite. But if I had known the context of the ones chosen, it would have made more sense to me

Layout: I hate this format Taschen is using for their cheaper issues. As far as I know, this is the only format available, but 832 pages in such a small size is problematic to open up completely without ruining the book itself. I can imagine this wasn’t a fun job for the layout department, only presenting the main credits on one page and the movie post on the one next to it, makes sense. But after that, the way the text and images are mangles together is utter chaos. The still from the films were cropped in such a horrible manner, it’s a disgrace to the cineast who composed the original shots. A bigger size would have made it much easier to present the movies in a more respectable way and better looking.

The content: The facts and description of the movies vary a lot in quality. They are written by around 20 film critics, historians, journalists and professors from different countries. Some are spot on and with fun facts why the movie is made as it is or why it had a huge impact on the film making industry. Others are just descriptions on the story and some historical facts. There is no connection between them at all. That could have been a main reason to create a book like this. So now it’s just 100 tip, which could have been presented in a whole other way (online playlist, a bucketlist app, a podcast series).

A good collection of noteworthy movies. The book is attractively assembled. As would be expected you can quibble with the selections but on balance they are a strong collection- with the exception that many of the later titles reviewed seem weak. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon instead of the Matrix? Faceoff instead of Fargo? American Beauty instead of Unforgiving? Really!? Not sure what the method for selecting was as some movies are pretty obscure, others very pop, and others are very artsy. Good balance of European and foreign movies- perhaps even an overrepresentation.
With only a few exceptions the movies reviewed are pretty gloomy. reflecting the left wing cinema priorities over the last 60 years- no fault of the reviewers as the industry produces mostly these movies. Most movies mock the "bourgeoise" and shallow western ways- especially the American and European movies starting in the 1950's and continuing into the 1990's . The reviewers seem to mostly avoid pandering to the woke crowd but occasionally they slip- as when they attribute Scarface's message as a reaction to Reagans "neo-liberal economic practices" (though knowing Oliver Stone- it is probably an accurate statement) or the bizarre statement in the Blade Runner review that "whites are are housed in forbidding, monolithic skyscrapers". Several of the movies were made by self admitted communists- which seems OK with the reviewers. Nonetheless, good synopsis of mostly good and important movies.

I thought I watched a lot of old movies but boy do I have some more to watch! What I personally liked a lot was that the movies weren't just from the US, but from other places, even my home country of the Netherlands.
A downside for me was how heavy it was on the 'adult' department in the later years. I understand that people love shocking movies, but personally, I don't want to see too many naked people in my movies and wow I saw too many in the book, let alone when I watch these movies...

A fun book to have if you watch a lot of movies and want to see how many you've watched or have some ideas on what to watch next.
