In this treasury from the Taste of Home magazine, cooks from across the country share 357 classic recipes. Fourteen chapters give you home-style foods from hearty breakfasts to tasty desserts. Many of recipes have beautiful full-color photos of the prepared dish and many have heartwarming memories from people who fondly recall spending time in the kitchen with Grandma while she cooked.
This book reminded me of a church cookbook as each of the recipes was turned in by a regular home cook. I tried the lemon bread recipe and really liked it. The recipe was identical to one that a friend had given me. I also like the ham loaf recipe, which is pretty much the same as my mom's, except that it was for individual loaves and mom's is for two full-sized loaves. The cooking time ended up about 15 minutes less for the individual sized ones, but the technique and glaze recipe were identical. I make this recipe occasionally and it makes it feel like mom is still here. I have a couple more recipes I want to try and photocopied them so I can return the book to the library. I might add this one to my cookbook collection at some point.
Much of this cookbook belongs to the school of 'Get something, anything, on the table.' The recipes in this book will keep body and soul together, but that's about it.
