New York Times bestselling author, Food Network star, and the Pioneer Woman herself, Ree Drummond brings us the first book in a brand-new picture book series! In Ree's own words: "I was all grown up when I moved out to the country. When I first arrived, I felt so out of place! But eventually, I looked around and discovered all the wonderful things about country life. So I decided to write a story about my experiences, as seen through the eyes of a little girl named Ree. Little Ree moves to the country and feels as scared and unsure as I was. But then she finds that if she sets her mind to it, being a country girl is a pretty cool thing. Come along on her adventures!"Little Ree trades in her city days for a country way of life when she moves with her family to her grandparents' ranch. She's excited to ride horses, swim in the pond, and help Grandma cook for everyone. But on her first day, she finds that living on a ranch can be tough. She has to get up at the crack of dawn, learn to herd cows, and make sure her horse, Pepper, doesn't eat everything in sight. And that's all before breakfast! Will she ever get used to this new place? Luckily, the end of the day brings a big family barbecue ... and the happy discovery that being a country girl isn't about the right pair of boots, it's all about the right attitude.
Ree Drummond began blogging in 2006 and has built an award-winning website, where she shares recipes, showcases her photography, and documents her hilarious transition from city life to ranch wife. She is the author of the #1 New York Times bestselling cookbook The Pioneer Woman Cooks. Ree lives on a working cattle ranch near Pawhuska, Oklahoma, with her husband, Ladd; their four kids; their beloved basset hound; and lots of other animals.

In what I assume is an autobiographical story, Little Ree moves with her family from the city to her grandparents’ farm. She’s really excited, but country life isn’t what she is expecting. She has to get up early. Her bedroom is plain. The night is dark, and there are scary sounds outside. She is given a horse, but the horse doesn’t do what she wants. The illustrations are precious, and the story is told with a very realistic child’s voice. The whole of her story is told from her monologue addressed both to the audience and to the characters without any dialogue tags or narration. Little Ree is talkative enough that the story remains even apart from the illustrations. Little Ree reminds me a bit ofFancy Nancy and Eloise with her precociousness and clothes horse-ish-ness.
Little Ree is a book about Ree Drummond's childhood move to the country. She is excited about her move into her grandparents' house before experiencing some anxiety about her differences. Eventually she adjusts and is happy about her new home. I have watched Pioneer Woman and I can hear Ree telling this story. The illustrations perfectly embody what I imagine little Ree would be like. The patterns she wears are a lot like the kitchen ware she sells. The story is cute and easy to relate to. Little Ree would be a great book to read to a class when expecting a new student. The part about her cousins helping her adjust to the country and not ostracizing her because of her differences would be a good lesson to learn. This book would also be wonderful for encouraging students to try new things. Ree tries lots of new things with a positive attitude.
Little Ree and her family moved out West to live with their grandparents. There they discover that ranch life is very different from city life. But she soon discovers that having the right attitude will lead to happiness, Ree Drummond has written this book as an introduction to what ranch like is like as seen through the eyes of a young girl. Although she moved west as an adult, this is the musings of a young girl. Bright watercolor illustrations make his an easy read. This would be a good selection for a young horse lover as it introduces ranch life to the reader. A pancake recipe is included in the book.
"Little Ree" by Ree Drummond. The book is cute! The pictures are very detailed and colorful, which I like when reading children's books. The book i about a family of four, which includes a Mom, Dad, brother, and Ree. They move from the city to the country to live with Ree and her brother's grandparents and help them on the farm. Ree discovers that the country is very different from the city but grows to enjoy living there. The story is about the author, as she is named Ree. I think the book is a bit bland as I do not think there is much of a problem to be solved. Other than that, the book is cute!
Ree moved to the country from the city a long time ago. Well, it was four hours and nineteen minutes ago. (But that's only if you want to be exact.) Life's different in the country, especially the time she wakes up. She has to get up before the sun even does, make sure that her horse, Pepper, behaves, and loads more. Will she ever fit in with the country lifestyle? This book is super cute - as are all of Ree Drummond's other books - and there is even a yummy pancake recipe in the back of the book! These illustrations are great and always make me smile when I read the book. Thank you for reading! Follow @bronteandwilder on Instagram for more fun book recommendations!
I think Ree Drummond did a good job capturing what I imagine she actually was like as a child. This charmingly illustrated picture book tells the story of Little Ree's first days on her grandparents' farm. Little Ree quickly discovers farm life involves early morning hours, loads of hard work, and a hearty appetite. Spunky and upbeat, Ree is likely to delight young girls, particularly those interested in animals, farms, or cooking. Those who like a little more "meat" to their stories may find it a bit cloying (think Pollyanna.) As a bonus a pancake recipe is included.
It can be interesting to see how celebrities are allowed to break traditional rules when dabbling in picture book writing. Little Ree (a child version of the author) is told in first-person monologue style. The colorful pictures fill in some of the spaces in this slice of life episode. For example, I enjoyed how with nary a word, the illustrator adds a whole scene of Ree receiving cowgirl clothes from her grandparents. The many cousins who come to visit Ree are fun to match up from page to page, as well.
Life on a ranch -- maybe this book will help your child to decide whether to dream of that... or not.
Watch Little Ree learn how to work with a horse. The name of her horse is Pepper.
Pepper!?!?! You're eating again.
Wrong way, Pepper! Wrong way!
Becoming a "country girl," Little Ree learns that she must work hard. However, her ranch lifestyle seems to come with a very large group of friendly cousins.
FIVE STARS, whether this book gives a child a new purpose in life. Or this story makes said child very grateful to not be growing up on a ranch.
Cute story about a family (2 parents, brother, and Ree) moving from the city to the country to live with Ree's grandparents. The focus is on how different things are in the country -- riding horses, the clothes people wear, and what time people get up.
The girl is named Ree, but the author didn't move to the country until she was grown. This is her idea of what it would have been like to move as a child.
I’ve been a fan of Ree Drummond for years. I love her tv show, her cookbooks, her blog, and now this book. I know she’s written quite a few other books and I want to read them too.
There is such a great message in this book. I know there are a lot of families that move, and sometimes that’s not so easy for the kids. But this book will show them that a move isn’t always bad. And maybe, it just might end up being a wonderful thing.
Little Ree just moved to the country from the city (about 4 hours and 19 minutes ago), and she is super excited! She is discovering all of the crazy, wonderful things that come along with living in the country, like mud, a pool, and her grandma! However, she is awoken with the realization that it comes with a little work, too. She must wake up and get things done before breakfast, which isn't always fun, but she realizes that it is all about having a good attitude.
Little Ree and her family are moving in with Grandma and grandpa to help on the farm. It's a whole new world. Will Ree fit in? Like the moving isn't always easy. A little long so one on one or preschool.
What a fun story! The illustrations are bright and colorful, and any child who is adjusting to a new living situation will be able to connect with Little Ree's feelings of apprehension and hopefully find something worth imitating in her optimistic approach.
Such a cute story. This is one my girls ask to read over and over. Little Ree moves out in the country and has to find ways to make country life her new normal. We especially loved the pancake recipe inside!!
