The rise of the Dutch Republic must ever be regarded as one of the leading events of modern times. Without the birth of this great commonwealth the various historical phenomena of: the sixteenth and following centuries must have either not existed; or have presented themselves under essential modifications.
There's no doubting which of these historical characters the author admires and which he doesn't! His enthusiasm for his subject is evident on every page and especially the battle scenes really come to life. (I obviously clicked on the wrong icon as the book I read was the whole thing not just volume one as pictured above, it was 900 pages and a 1907 edition that was crumbling in my hands as I read). A deeply satisfying and an absolute joy of a read. The last line, which left me tearful when I first read it during my long ago schooldays, still brought a lump to my throat
Thought I was getting volume 1 of 3. But this is just the first of something like 18 pieces in this digital edition. Illustrations are worthless, not even captioned. Text appears to be machine-generated and unedited with random commas inserted in unlikely places and words frequently broken up.
