Brian Roy’s heart can’t handle another ghost – his wife would kill him long before his bad heart does! Yet, he can’t leave his cousin Mitchell hanging. Mitch is principal of the Academy. After a cataclysmic senior class prank, the school is in shambles and dark secrets in the cellar escape. Bodies are piling up and Brian has no choice but to step in and hopefully save Mitchell and his school.
Old Nathaniel Weiss, a cunning conversationalist, was the founder of the Academy. Greg Weston, a powerful pugilist, was a graduate long ago. The two sinister spirits wreak havoc as Mitch and Brian race against time to stop them from smooth-talking everyone into doing their deadly deeds or beating them to death! It’s war and Brian needs to prepare for a deadly battle.
As the undead rise again, Brian faces a specter more deadly than any he could ever imagine. He realizes he’ll have to face his own personal demons ... and only time will tell if he’ll be the victim or the victor.
Ron Ripley is a husband and father surviving in New England, a place which seems to be getting colder every day. He grew up across from a disturbingly large cemetery where he managed to scare himself every night before going to bed. Mostly because of the red lights that people put in front of the headstones. Those things are just plain creepy to a kid.
Ron enjoys writing horror, military history and driving through the small towns of New England with his family, collecting books and giving impromptu lectures on military history to his family, who enjoy ignoring him during those dreadful times.
When Brian's cousin calls asking for help, he doesn't hesitate. While he is attempting to get out of the ghost business, family cannot be ignored.
A prank at the school has unleashed an evil that is out for revenge, and Brian must figure out how to stop them before it is too late. He must also confront a ghost from his past as well.
This book was the perfect ending to a perfect series. Set this time on a college campus, things are a much more sedate pace than any of the previous stories. Brian is called to the area by a family member to investigate strange happenings and once again becomes enmeshed in the dark goings on. The action this time is more of a possession style and involves less characters but seems more involving because of this. Focus is drawn constantly to the strange bearded entity and his ever growing power. Again, not for the squeamish, you will not be able to put this final episode down until the victims have bled out and breathed their last breath.
A superb series that was a joy to read. Full marks to Scare Street and Ron Ripley for keeping me constantly entertained. Highly recommended.
The last and the final book in the Moving In series, following ‘Moving In’, ‘The Dunewalkers’, ‘Middlebury Sanitarium’, ‘The First Church’ and The ‘Paupers’ Crypt’, is ‘The Academy’. Naturally, after reading the initial five books in the series, I could not resist the urge of leaving the series incomplete and thus picked up this book.
After The Paupers’ Crypt, I had good expectations from this book but I must say it did not impress anything more. Not that the book is bad but it did not cross the standards set by the previous book.
Review of THE ACADEMY by Ron Ripley (Moving In #6)
I think this is the best in this wonderful series, along with Book #1, Movin' In. This series relates the ghost-hunting, ghost-capturing, physically dangerous adventures of Brian Roy, a man who can not only see ghosts, but communicate with them. In THE ACADEMY, a senior class prank causes not only damage to the physical plant among the several buildings at the Academy, a historic school in Connecticut, but releases the founder's ghost, a man whose self-centeredness is only surpassed by his will.
Brian will go the depths and suffer terrible danger in this novella, which will engross and entice readers.
The main ghost from each book in the series had some serious control issues. I felt as though each time Brian challenged the spirits, I was afraid he might not make it out alive. Luckily, he had lots of help from those around him. I was sad to see the end of the series but what a ride!
"Book 1 Moving In: This was an entertaining story. I do have questions after finishing the story.....I am rating 4 stars for now. I know that this is a series so it is possible that some of the questions will be answered in later installments. It is entertaining enough that I will continue on with the series. Book 2 The Dunewalkers: Ok. Still a four star book. I do feel like some of the questions remaining from the first book were answered in this book. That is good. I am still going to continue to rate this as a 4 star book. While the story is entertaining, I do feel like things could be wrapped up a bit tidier at the end.....I am still entertained enough to continue on with the series. Book 3 Middlebury Sanitarium: Still 4 stars. Some of the questions from the first book were never answered. Also, each individual ""ghost case"" presents it's own set of questions. I still feel some of those should have been answered better. Book 4 The First Church: So far, I seem to be pretty consistantly rating these at 4 stars. The stories are still entertaining. The characters are still fun. I do wish that each book was a bit longer so more things could be explained/explored. Book 5 The Pauper's Crypt: An entertaining enough story. Again, there is enough story for it to be worth the read. Still 4 stars. Book 6 The Academy: Same conclusion. Four stars. I may try this collection for a second time and take notes as I go. There seem to be things that are never answered and things within the ghost ""lore"" of this series that change to serve the purpose of the story. I do get a bit annoyed by these kinds of inconsistencies. I did, however, enjoy this series enough to continue on to the Berkley Street series. It is the story of Shane which is a character that was in this series a bit."
This is book 6 in the Moving In series. You have a senior class prank which causes a lot of damage to the school, physical plant, and the other buildings at the academy. Sadly it is a historic school in Connecticut and it releases the ghost of the founder a self centered man. You have Brian Roy with his bad heart who against his wifes will continues to work with ghosts as his cousin asked for help. He keeps breaking his promise to Jenny and ghost hunts. You have an action packed storyline with believable characters and the ghosts are scarier. You have more violence in this book. You have physically dangerous adventures for Brian. This is the last book in the series and the way it is written Ron Ripley could have continued to add more. As usual Thom Bowers did an amazing job giving you the willys. The ending will surprise you. I highly recommend this book and series. Enjoy!
This is the final book in one of my favourite series, and while it wasn't as creepy as some of the other books, it was still a great end to an amazing series.
In this one Brian is called by his cousin due to some weird activity in his Academy. Jenny really doesn't want him to go but Brian and his cousin have a history and Brian can't let him down. But this case is harder than they know and Brian is taxed right till the end. This could end up killing him!!
The plot of this is more a mystery for Brian as he has to figure out who the ghost is and what he wants. But it's not just one ghost!! Right from the start you are grabbed and brought into the story and it doesn't stop till the very end. there were certain times where my heart was in my mouth and it broke for a certain character too. I don't want to say too much because it will spoil it so all I'll say is it was well written and the plot developed at a steady pace. I had to keep reading to see what would happen because there didn't seem to be a minute where nothing was happening!!
I grew to love these characters. Brian, Jenny, Shane (whom I already loved) and Leo. Leo being my favourite!!! Each of them develops throughout the series and each one was brilliantly written. I highly recommend you give this series a go!!
In all, a fitting end to the series. It's time for Brian and Jenny to rest (though I do hope we see them again at some stage).
Thom Bowers read this extremely well. He captured each character perfectly and breathed life into the story. He has an amazing array of tones and voices and gave each character their own personality.
I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.
School pranks can get out of hand... Brian Roy's heart is getting more unreliable, but when his cousin, who is the principal of the Academy, calls for his help after the school is temporarily closed because of a colossal senior class prank that does massive damage. But now the evil founder's ghost has been released, and is causing mayhem and destruction, and several deaths. Will Brian be able to survive the onslaught and return the ghosts to where they need to be, or will he die trying?
My favorite (and last one) in the this series. Pretty exciting and a real page turner. I loved the entire series and just bought the third (Town of Griswold) in another series I had started (Berkeley series) but it's just not up to The Moving In series, at least not yet. ;-) Will see how it goes. Highly recommend the Moving In series.
Another excellent book in the series!!! I think that this one was by far the best in the series! Will there be any more for this series?? I wish ALL of your books were available on Kindle Unlimited!!!
Last in series, typical Ron Ripley. Brian is called to help his cousin who has a ghostly problem. He has to call on all his strength this strength, will his heart hold up?. Easy read, quick, lovely characters. Great setting you can feel the history on the pages / kindle.
Overall, I liked the series. It was just an old-fashioned ghost story. This was my least favorite, though. There were just too many loose ends. Not enough of the plot was explained. Still a pretty good read though.
A good conclusion to the series great read throughout the series but i suppose it could carry on when Brian has healed again although i dought the wife would be very much against this .
This book was kind of dry in the beginning but the more I read, the more interesting it became. There was so much hunting going on that once again, Brian got hurt, but Leo came back to save him. I am saddened that the series ended but looking forward to the next one.
What an ending!! Interesting and intense, the Academy brings the series to an end...for now. Such a wonderfully chilling, beautifully creepy, uniquely written series. Highly recommended.
I have enjoyed each book in this series. Ron Ripley really knows how to create a chilling story that grabs the attention and won't let go. The characters were really interesting, the story of Charlie added another layer to the plot. I really hope that Herman will get his own series. Anyone looking for a fantastic read that is scary good will enjoy this entire series.
Hard to believe that I've read six of these now. Who knew ghosts could cause so much damage to the living. That bad heart continues to beat on, but that body had taken a heck of a lot of abuse. It's the best that he's now supposed top be calling it quits with the ghost hunting. Wonder if Leo took as many butt kickings? Lived the books, Thank You!
Another fabulous book in the series! This one wasn’t as good as the last couple I listened to, but it was still really entertaining and a really well written story. I’m so glad I used a credit to buy the box set of this series on audible. I’ve had such a great time listening to them. Im so sad that it’s over now. Guess I’ll have to check out more of his books.
I loved the story line to this book. It's interesting that these ghosts take place at an Academy and how many accidents there were. A lot of beatings from ghosts
