It’s election time in Spencer, Maryland, and the race for mayor is not a pretty one. In recent years, the small resort town has become divided between the local year-round residents who have enjoyed their rural way of life and the city dwellers moving into their mansions, taking over the town council, and proceeding to turn Deep Creek Lake into a closed gate community—complete with a host of regulations for everything from speed limits to clothes lines. When the political parties force-feed two unsavory mayoral nominees on the town residents, Police Chief David O’Callaghan decides to make a statement—by nominating Gnarly, Mac Faraday’s German shepherd, to run as mayor of Spencer! What starts out as a joke turns into a disaster when overnight Gnarly becomes the front runner—at which point his political enemies take a page straight out of Politics 101. What do you do when you’re behind in a race? Dig up dirt on the front runner, of course. Seemingly, someone is not content to rest with simply embarrassing the front runner by publicizing his dishonorable discharge from the United States Army, but to throw in a murder for good measure. With murder on the ballot, Mac Faraday and the gang—including old friends from past cases—dive in to clear Gnarly’s name, catch a killer, and save Spencer!
Lauren Carr is the international best-selling author of the Mac Faraday, Lovers in Crime, and Thorny Rose Mysteries—over twenty titles across three fast-paced mystery series filled with twists and turns!
Book reviewers and readers alike rave about how Lauren Carr’s seamlessly crosses genres to include mystery, suspense, romance, and humor.
Lauren is a popular speaker who has made appearances at schools, youth groups, and on author panels at conventions. She lives with her husband, and three dogs on a mountain in Harpers Ferry, WV.
I am a huge fan of Lauren Carr’s, so when I saw a chance to get a copy of her latest Mac Faraday Mystery, Candidate for Murder, how could I resist?
A familiar cast of characters and Lauren Carr’s humorous hints had me guessing in this murder mystery.
OMG…Gnarly is under investigation. He’s running for mayor of Spencer and the mudslinging has begun. His competition will stop at nothing to undermine him.
After seeing the promo for the movie PETS, it is easy to visualize the mischief of Gnarly and his cohort Storm, a canine Bonnie & Clyde. Here’s just one example: feasting on a romantic dinner for two that was not intended for them.
“If you were smart, you would have put them outside before levaing our dinner unguarded.”
“I did…But I forgot to lock it!”
The writing and dialogue keeps me in stitches as the political campaign heats up. An old murder is being investigated and the city of Spencer will be rocked. Outrageously funny. Unputdownable. Spoofing politics makes this a MUST READ during our political times.
Greed, ambition, God complex, entitlement, ego, sex, money, power…
Every time I think of the kittens Gnarly saved, a laugh bursts forth.
So much is going on, I am having trouble figuring out who the bad guys are. I love that.
OMG!!! The best Mac Faraday…yet. Lauren Carr is a master storyteller who combines the humor of Janet Evanovich and the investigative skills of Patricia Cornwell. She is always at the top of my reading list.
I received a copy of Candidate for Murder from Lauren Carr in return for an honest review.
This is funny, full of true feelings people feel about politics at times. I am convinced I would vote for Gnarly. We learn about Gnarly's past and why he was discharged without honor from Army. Fans of Mac Faraday will love it. You can read as stand alone but much better to have read other books first.
Police Chief David O'Callaghan is fed up with both candidates for his small town Mayor. He is dog sitting Gnarly and to make a statement he registers him as a independent candidate. Gnarly is smarter and more honor than anyone running. Things take off right away because others are fed up too.
Lies come out about Gnarly and his past. Jessicas and Murphy get involved with Gnarly to find out the truth. I want a less dangerous Nigel for myself.
One of the candidates starts to have things happen around them. They don't trust David to be fair.
Mac Faraday is back with all his regular characters and some new ones too. Mac on the day he lost everything in his divorce inherited $270 million dollar estate from his birth mother and property in Deep Creek Lake. Mac was a homicide detective in DC. Now he helps solve homicides as a hobby for his half-brother David small police force.
Gnarly is a German Shepherd that Mac inherited too. Gnarly is smart and was trained by U.S. Army. He is also a thief.
I love to read books by Lauren Carr. They have mystery, drama, and humor. I look forward to reading more of them in the future. This is also a clean read. Some violence dealing with murders, terrorists ect.
I was given this ebook to read for free by Lauren Carr. This is my honest opinion.
If you're a cosy mystery fan then this series is the one for you. With all the political controversy around the world at the moment, this book made me laugh as my favourite character, Gnarly the dog, runs for election. Compared to the other candidates, Gnarly should win by a length but in politics they don't play fair and Gnarly sees his reputation in tatters. Can it be salvaged? Can a dog, even as brilliant as Gnarly actually be mayor? In the process, we find out the secrets of the others, secrets that they will do anything to protect. Of course there is a more serious side as murder is involved. I loved the way that the book switches from the serious to the plain silly - how many kittens did Gnarly rescue being one of them. It also casts a rather unflattering light on the media and distorting the truth but it's all told in Lauren Carr's inimitable style. I enjoyed the last book of hers but this one is just as good.
Many twists and turns in this book, but you'll be laughing out loud in some parts. Election in small town, vacation spot for the well to do from Washington D.C.. They want to control of year round resistance, even their clothes lines. Two typical politicians wants to be the mayor of this town. They are pathological liars. Police Chief wants to make a statement by registering Gnarly to run as independent. And the politics goes to dogs. Gnarly has my vote, when he runs for the presidency.

Candidate For Murder Mac Faraday Mystery #12 By: Lauren Carr
REVIEW ☆☆☆☆
Lauren Carr is the type of author you can trust to deliver an entertaining, succinct and dynamic cozy mystery. I always know I will like whatever the next book will be. Candidate For Murder is the first of the Mac Faraday Mysteries I have read, and I think a standalone read of this book is just fine.
I was not lost because I picked up the strings of this story quickly, and ran with them. Spencer sounds like a few towns I know in coastal areas- overrun with monied people and changing in ways unwelcome by the locals. With a mayoral race in progress, two unwelcome candidates are running, but who wants to vote for these clowns? The police chief nominates Gnarly, the German Shepherd, for office as a jab to the other candidates. What an awesome idea!
Gnarly gains momentum, and that certainly makes a statement about the mindset of the regular townspeople. Then, a candidate is murdered, and who is the suspect? A dog? Someone is desperate and liable to do worse! Even though it is ridiculous, I think this story is hilarious, except for the murder. The plot was balanced, so it was not insane but also not deadly serious. The dialogue is witty and snappy but serious when necessary. The characters are, mostly, just normal people and easy to like with relatable characteristics. Spencer is a town I can easily envision.
I know this type of mystery is not everyone's cup of tea. But, for fans of this genre or the author, Lauren Carr is the best choice for your next read. There are numerous other series in her collection, and I bet you can find a new favorite among them.
Look, I love Gnarly, and think that he made this entire series. But this book? It was just too much! Too ridiculous and unbelievable. Something changed a couple of books back, and this series lost the intimacy, the sense of place - it's identity. It tried to be something that it wasn't. And It didn't work. And never was that more apparent than in this book. I mean that plot - seriously?
Whoever thought that having a dog running for mayor, and at the same time tracking international terrorists, shedding light on cover-ups in the military and rescuing a litter of kittens from a burning building, was in any way shape or form a good idea??? And that was just the half of it.... Just no.
Let's start with the fact I'm a big fan of Lauren Carr's books. After reviewing a few, I went back to the beginning and read most of her books by series and in order on a trip to Maui. So I was obviously excited to receive her latest Mac Faraday title to read and review. All Carr's books are a great choice if you love to enjoy an relaxing, escapist read at the end of the day. They offer a bit of mystery, a bit of romance, a bit of danger and a good dash of humor.
In this newest installment, the town of Spencer is in the throws of a mayoral election and no one is excited by either of the two candidates. In fact, Police Chief David O'Callaghan is so disgusted, he decides to create some serious waves by entering Mac Faraday's large, intelligent and often unpredictable German Shepherd named Gnarly in the race. What is meant to be just a protest becomes much more. Havoc ensues as a large number of frustrated voters decide to jump on the bandwagon and Gnarly becomes the front runner. Then one of the candidates is murdered and Gnarly becomes one of the suspects.
Romance, murder, intrigue, plot twists and lots of comedic moments - this book has it all. I can assure you, it will whisk you away from the day's cares and you'll struggle to put it down until you reach the last page. But the way, did you know that the character of Gnarly is inspired by the author's own beloved German Shepherd?
If you love the character of Gnarly, you should check out Carr's tongue and cheek article called - 10 Facts of Life Gnarly Taught Me - on my personal site called Olio By Marilyn.
I’ve read several books in the Mac Faraday Mystery series and was so excited after reading the synopsis for this newest one.
Gnarly, Mac Faraday’s german shepherd and my favorite four-legged friend, is running for Mayor of Spencer. Most folks in town don’t care for either of the candidates running on the ballot. Sound familiar? They jump on board to vote Gnarly in. Of course, the other nominees aren’t taking this lying down, and they dig for the dirt. I don’t think they’ll find anything. After all, Gnarly is man’s best friend. Well, except for the thing about the disappearing food. His partner in crime, Storm, knows all about that, and she’s not talking.
What started as a lark snowballs, and the fun begins. Can you imagine Gnarly debating the other candidates? How about kissing babies and shaking hands? Gnarly is on the campaign fast track. I wonder if his four-legged companions will be allowed to vote.
In between all of the crazy political scheming, the gang is working a cold case. Secrets are uncovered and the town of Spencer might not survive the fallout.
I love that Lauren’s characters are all animal lovers and their pets go wherever they go. And they are just as individual in personality as the humans. It’s a load of laughs to see what they get into.
When an author can spin a good mystery and keep me in stitches at the same time, it’s all good. I loved this book and it’s now one of my favorites in the series.
Candidate for Murder is the perfect book to read during this election year! Much more enjoyable than watching all the political ads on tv. This book is full of exciting adventures!
Lots of mystery and suspense. The author has our minds jumping from one incident to another. I love the authors dialogue. She can go from a serious situation and in the next having me laugh out loud! Lots of twists and turns, characters that you will question, murders to be solved, and the best of all.... Gnarly, the dog is running for Mayor!
This book is #12 in the series but you will not feel lost. The author gives a run down at beginning of book so you know a bit about each character.
Lauren Carr never fails to write a book that will totally entertain you. If you are looking for a fun, entertaining, and fast paced book, you must read this one! I highly recommend it!
* I received a copy of this book as part of a blog tour. In no way did this influence my review.
Blog Tour: Candidate For Murder by Lauren Carr Lauren Carr book gets it me each and every time. I love the fact that in this book there seem to be three mysteries going on all at once. She ties them all in together.
There seems to be a mystery case for all six members of the household. Murphy and Jessica seem to have a mystery of their own along with Mac and David and then their Archie and Dallas. How it all comes together and who it all involves is something neat about it and different.
To me that was something and there seems to be the main person that was in the middle of the all the mystery. Can a candidate be a mayor have paws? You will need to read "Candidate for Murder" to find out.
As Candidate for Murder by Lauren Carr opens, David O’Callaghan, the police chief of Spencer, Maryland gets really fed up with the poor quality of the two candidates for mayor, so in a protest, he signs up his half-brother’s German shepherd, Gnarly, to run as an independent against the two. This infuriates the candidates and political parties, especially when Gnarly quickly overtakes the other two candidates, reaching almost 50%, while the other two candidates hover around 17%. In the meantime, Mac Faraday, Gnarly’s owner and the ostensible star of the series, ends up in the hospital and can’t participate in the scheduled mayoral debate, so the assistant police chief takes over and does a great job until the so-called journalist moderating the debate with obvious bias toward Nancy Braxton throws in a bombshell. She makes the claim that Gnarly, a former army sergeant, murdered his handler, and because the details are classified, no one can fact- check this. So the friends of Gnarly set out to clear Gnarly’s name and solve some cold cases that keep popping up, as well as a couple of hot cases too.

This is the 12th book from the Mac Faraday Mystery series.
In this one, Gnarly is running for mayor of Spencer against two other candidates nobody really likes, like our current Presidential election. Each candidate for mayor has a checkered past, including Gnarly. Each has situations from their past which are investigated by Mac, Sheriff David O'Callaghan, and others including Murphy, Jessica, and Sheriff Turow, from the nearby county.
You find out what happened with Gnarly when he was dishonorably discharged from the Army. There are a lot of murders in this book. One of the mayoral candidates gets murdered. Gnarly's handler in the Army is killed right before Gnarly is discharged. Others include an investigative reporter; Fiona Davis, who had dinner with the investigative reporter; and family members of the mayoral candidates.
You will need to keep all the plot lines straight in your head but it all works out in the end. You will also see connections to what we are experiencing in our current elections such as a press that misleads you; corrupt candidates; and government agencies that will do anything and everything to make sure their candidate wins.
I love a good mystery. What I like about this series is that the main detective is the same and the recurring characters help you remember other books in the series. Mac is a fun detective to follow and has a great set of friends. But there is an even bigger set of suspects. I have to admit that I really liked the idea of a dog running for office. My town is so Democratic, that anyone would win, no matter the name, so it was interesting to read for me. I did not like when they went against Gnarly though! That cost them more votes! While trying to figure out who the killer was. and issues from the past arose I felt like I was going through the cast of characters and everyone was on my radar. From Jessica's kitchen to Dallas this is full of fun tidbits to keep me laughing. I can not wait for the next book. I am giving this book a 5/5. I was given a copy, all opinions are my own,
When Police Chief David O’Callaghan and Dallas Walker's dinner had been eaten by their dogs they end up at the Spencer Inn, where the candidates for Mayor of Spencer are debating. Then the Butterfly Effect takes over starting with a fight, a new candidate, the revealing of corruption, and then murders. Reaching further afield than Spencer, and do we find out why Gnarly was dishonourable discharged from the army. All the gang get together to solve these mysteries. A really enjoyable read, and a welcome back to the likable characters.
This is a great series. The Mac Faraday Mystery is a ten star series. I highly recommend this series. Author Lauren Carr is a fantastic writer. I've read every book in this series and this is the best series I've ever read . I can't wait for the next book to come out. I hope Lauren never stops writing this series . Highly recommend this series . Ten star series.
OLD & NEW MURDER CASES COLLIDE MIXED IN WITH A POLITICAL THREE RING CIRCUS. NOT UNLIKE WHAT’S REALLY HAPPENING COMPLETE WITH TWO CLOWNS. SOUNDS LIKE A PLOT RIPPED FROM TODAY’S HEADLINES IT’S ELECTION TIME (save us all) I WISH GNARLY WAS RUNNING IN THE UPCOMING PRESIDENTIAL RACE HE’D GET MY VOTE. GLAD I’VE READ ALL OF THE SERIES BECAUSE THE CAST OF CHARACTERS CONTINUES TO GROW (a little too much). I ALWAYS ENJOY MY VISITS TO SPENCER MOUNTAIN. ;D
3 storylines..one of them involve murder...2 involve treason, murder, attempted murder. . cia treason! lots of laughs as the story involves 2 small town politicians, one of whom bears a resemblance to a certain female presidential candidate. fans of Bernie Sanders will approve the ending as a canine third party candidate wins! Re-read in march of 2017..still fascinating.
It is always good to read a new book by one of your favorite authors and this one did not . Trying to keep the Faraday and Thornton clans straight always adds a bit of spice to any occasion. Add the CIA, a dash of Gnarly and the introduction of Nigel, this book ranks as one of the best. I can't wait until the next one!
I loved this book. This book was so much fun and just the idea that a dog could be mayor had me laughing and plugging in my ear buds and to be honest I think the way the world is that politicians would actually get more voters if a dog was a candidate. However it is so much more than that. There is a lot of characters because the elections throws up three murder cases that different family members focus on as they try to get Gnarly elected. This makes for three very different but interesting cases as the ripple effect spreads and I was hooked until the very end. It might sound confusing but I have heard a few of the books in the series and this helped to keep the relationships and characters straight, so you might want to read or listen to some of the other books first, I loved the characters especially Gnarly and even the computer butler, both who had me chuckling most of the time. There was also a lot of action, things blowing up and even some heroic dog rescuing of cats from burning buildings (hehe). I can't wait for the next book. Fed up with the two candidates for the new mayoral face Spence police chief nominates his brother's dog Gnarly as a joke. When things snowball out of hand and Gnarly gets his own campaign manger it looks like he might win the election and his opponents resort to dirty tactics by digging up Gnarly's past. Just how many skeletons in the closet can a dog have? The opponents dig deep and find his service record, of the time he spent in Afghanistan. Mac and the team must clear Gnarly's name by un sealing his army record and finding out what really happened to his old handler. But the dirty tactics don't stop there and one of the other candidates is murdered and with Gnarly having no alibi for the time of the murder, things don't look good. The whole family rallies behind Gnarly to clear his name for both murders but will they do it in time for the big vote? I like the narrator. He seems a bit gruff when he first starts talking but I quickly grew to like his manner of speaking and he does some good male and female voices. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request from audiobooksunleashed and have voluntarily left this review
Note: Even though this is part of a series, it works just fine as a stand alone novel. This tale puts Gnarly front and center. Yay! He’s easily my favorite character. All along, we’ve had hints of why Gnarly is no longer in the military. Now, we get the story. It’s told in small reveals throughout this bigger story where Gnarly inadvertently ends up running in local politics. It’s kind of funny and kind of serious – I really liked the balance. Ever had a local politician that was so bad at their job a good dog could do a better job? If so, then I think you’ll get a good chuckle out this story. However, the story by the nature of it has political views from some of the characters. Not too bad though I did notice that all the bad guys lean one way and all the good guys lean the other way. Currently, life is politicized enough and I really don’t want it in my fiction. I read to escape it and I can bump into politics on any social media platform, any news site. I don’t need it in my murder mysteries. Overall, it was another great story where there’s more than one mystery to unravel. I love how integrated the ladies are in the stories. They get just as much done as the men and are about equal in the bad guy column too. Dallas and her dog Stormy get to know the family better. I think Dallas could use a little more fleshing out. She’s still very much a Texas gal caricature but I still like her. The mystery itself was fun. I guessed correctly on some things and was totally off the mark on other things. I love that the path to truth has many twists and turns. While we have a few convenient moments where the bad guys spill their guts, it was still a fun mystery to solve. Oh! and I loved Nigel the butler. I really want to get a Nigel for my home security system. 4/5 stars. The Narration: C. J. McAllister was a change from Mike Alger, who narrates most of this series. I liked his male voices. Each was distinct. His female voices could use a bit more femininity and his Texas accent for Dallas was a little over done. The pacing was a little off with odd pauses between paragraphs (maybe? pages? chapters?). There were no other tech issues with the recording. 4/5 stars.
I chose to listen to this book after receiving a free audio copy from the author. All opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. I had read this book four years ago, but I was happy to listen to it because I knew I enjoyed it back then, but I didn’t remember all of the details.
This is Lauren Carr’s 12th Mac Faraday novel. I have read quite a few of her bookss because I like her writing style. It’s easy to follow, the dialogue is outstanding, and I enjoy the dogs’ parts in the stories.
There are a lot of characters in Candidate for Murder but since I’m acquainted with several of them, I wasn’t confused. There is usually a Cast of Characters at the beginning of the books which helps new readers, but that’s not available with the audiobook as far as I can tell.
I like Mac Faraday and his wife, Archie Monday, and I love Mac’s dog, Gnarly! In fact, this book is about Gnarly in a roundabout way. Chief of Police and Mac Faraday’s half brother, David, is watching Gnarly while Mac is out of town. David is so disgusted with the two candidates running for mayor of the small town of Spencer that he signs Gnarly up as a candidate. Gnarly’s immediately a hit and way ahead of the other candidates in the polls.
Unfortunately, one of the candidates is murdered. That’s not the only murder that Mac and his entourage have to solve. They meet the husband of Gnarly’s murdered handler and promise to find out who killed her when she was in Iraq.
There are some twists and humor as usual. It’s hard to figure out who the bad guy is, or the worst guy. When politics is involved you never know what’s going to come up. And when Gnarly runs for mayor, they even try to dig up dirt on him. Can he actually win?
The narrator did an excellent job. I was impressed that he was able to change his voice enough for the many characters that I had no difficulty knowing who was speaking.
I definitely recommend Candidate for Murder. It has great characters, mystery, intrigue, twists, and lots of humor.
A number of years ago, a perfectly normal fellow named Mac Faraday learned that his biological mother was a very famous person and, on the day his acrimonius divorce became final, Mac inherited a vast fortune. Now, the retired homicide detective lives in a magnificent estate on a lake in Spencer, Maryland, with his beloved dog, Gnarly. Gnarly has a questionable past but his biggest issue these days is his kleptomania. Nothing is safe from being pilfered by this German Shepherd.
At the moment, the whole town is focused on the upcoming mayoral election. It was already contentious due to strained feelings between the locals and the summer crowd; now, it’s a no holds barred fight because David, Mac’s police chief brother, nominated Gnarly as the one to beat the other two unpalatable candidates, Nancy Braxton and Bill Clark. The door is wide open for probes into the pasts of all three and it doesn’t take long for someone to dredge up old accusations of cowardice against the war dog when his handler was murdered during deployment. That’s not all, though—soon enough, one of the nominees is found dead in mysterious circumstances and, as it turns out, there’s more than one murder afoot.
Gnarly’s past is a fascinating story and it takes David along with a number of friends and other family members to get to the truth about his cowardice charge and the murders. I loved spending time again with Gnarly’s pals, Shetland sheepdog Spencer, Basset Hound Newman and Belgian Shepherd Storm as well as assorted humans. Gnarly’s campaign managers, Bernie and Hap, are a hilarious addition to a story that is a full-throated investigation into murder, political shenanigans and national security issues while still being shot through with humor. Narrator C.J. McAllister offers a lively performance and distinct voices along with a good sense of timing and brings Ms. Carr’s terrific story to life. Highly recommended ;-)
If all of Lauren Carr's books are even slightly similar to this one (and the previous one I read by her), I'm definitely going to have to read more of her books. Candidate for Murder was the perfect mix of murder mystery and humor. It kept me on the edge of my seat and made me laugh at the same time.
I'm not sure if her other books are the same, but the two I've read have both involved a brilliant canine character, which I adore. It adds a fun twist to the mystery aspect, and I just find it fascinating that a dog could solve a murder. When if felt as if something was getting too intense, the dog(s) helped ease the tension and make it a bit more lighthearted.
As for the human characters, they were very well written. The characters you're meant to dislike have the perfect qualities to keep you rooting against them - with the exception of one. Nancy Braxton was one of my personal favorites in the book. She started out as obnoxious and insufferable, but as I learned more about her character, I started sympathizing with her.
I don't know much about the group of main protagonists as this was my first Mac Faraday novel, but I still loved them dearly. Some of them could be the slightest bit annoying - particularly Dallas - but I think that added to their charm. The relationships, or in some cases, the developing relationships, between them all were great. I loved every interaction between Archie and Dallas.
The overall plot itself was, to me, brilliant. The book followed a few different storylines, each being entertaining and suspenseful. And I know it's cheesy, but the idea of a dog running for mayor while simultaneously working on important military assignments was fascinating for me. It did seem a bit far-fetched, but I think that only made it better.
My only problem with the book was the amount of characters that were in it - excluding the main group. There were few times a character would be introduced to a scene and it would take me a moment to remember who they were. I'm not sure if it would have helped if I'd read the rest of the series or not.
If you're looking for a more lighthearted mystery novel, I'd suggest giving this one a try. I do think I'm going to purchase the rest of the series to give myself a little more insight into some of the characters and relationships. That may make it even more enjoyable, and I'd love to see more of their adventures.

This is the second book in the Mac Faraday series I have listened to and It was just as enjoyable as the last book. From the minute the book started it pulled me in and had my complete attention. I was irritated any time I had to pause the book and couldn't wait to get back to it.
Even though these books are part of a series and have recurring characters that are all connected in some way they can each be listened to as a standalone.
It's an entertaining well written story that flows smoothly, has an interesting plot, is full of intrigue and keeps you on the edge of your seat with all the twists. You are never quite sure who the actual killer is. Just when you think you have it figured out something changes and you have to start all over again. I love a story that you can't figure out in the first couple of chapters.
Great cast of characters. I really enjoy that each book while new and focusing on different characters, the rest of the familiar cast are not left out or ignored. They all have a role or make an appearance. It's like visiting with old friends. Really enjoyed the role Gnarly played in this story.
C.J. McAllister once again does a great job with the narration. Gotta love that deep rough around the edges voice. His voice just pulls you into a story and makes it come to life. Clearly spoken with a nice even pace. Really good character voices. All of them. Male and female. I really like that he doesn't try to do a high pitched female voice. Just the slight change in cadence is enough. Great job at making Mac sound sick. It's always very enjoyable to listen to him narrate a book.
I was given this free review audiobook at my request and voluntarily provided this review.
I was so excited to be reading and reviewing another Mac Faraday mystery by Lauren Carr, and especially because I get a visit with Gnarly, Mac’s German Shepherd. I love this quirky canine and he is by far my favorite character in this series.
It’s election time in the town of Spencer and guess who is on the ballot? Yep, You got it, Gnarly! It started out as fun, but boy did it get nasty fast! Taking readers down a road of a fast paced, action packed suspense thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. There is so much going on here, so many wonderful characters to get to know, but it is also so much interesting fun to follow these characters in their quest to find a new mayor. I so much enjoyed the twist with the election, and I loved getting to dig deeper into Gnarly’s life. And we find some interesting things about the loveable and adorable German shepherd! Author Lauren Carr does a fabulous job writing this book, and weaving it all together for a great ending. These Mac Faraday stories with the wonderful Gnarly are growing on me fast. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!
I have read several books by Lauren Carr now and and I know I will enjoy every page of the book. I love her writing style. Her characters are always interesting, fun, realistic, and you can always expect to find a read that will stay with you for a good long while and have you coming back for more. If you love a good clean, fun, suspense story this is a great one to check out. Candidate for Murder is a very deserving 5 plus stars for me.
A special thanks to the author/publisher for a copy of this book. I am not required to write a positive review, the opinions here are mine alone. I am disclosing this wi
( Format : Audiobook ) 'American politics goes to the dogs.' This is not a book which could be easily summerised. Nor even simple to categorise. It is a a sprightly written and amusing tale of domestic relationships, a political satire, containing more than one murder mystery, spies. And dogs. Filled with great characters, this lovely book's stories dart like coloured fishes through different scenarios - and they all seem to make perfect sense. It was a sheer joy. The pleasure is increased by the narration of C.J.McCallister who breathes even more life into all of the protagonists with his varied and clearly differentiated voicings, including a marvellous Texan drawl for an investigative journalist named Dallas. And a personal favourite, Nigel, an AI butler who certainly pulls out all the stops to care for his people, is once again featured. I am a relative newcomer to the books of Lauren Carr - this is only my second - but I am already beginning to feel that I know some of these people personally. At number twelve in the series it might have been difficult to enter into this world, but it isn't: part of the joy is meeting the folks as the story unfolds.
This is a delectably delicious story of deception, death and dogs - amusing and easy listening with plenty of twists and turns and thrills of the chase.. Definitely recommended.
Wonderful book. Somehow they managed to write a book where a dog has been nominated for mayor of a small town and there is international espionage and make the book both fun and exciting at the same time. When the police chief of Spencer ends up arresting both candidates for mayor for fighting at a debate he gets fed up and decides to nominate Gnarly, a German Shepard, for mayor. As Gnarly starts to rise in the popularity in the polls and the 2 human candidates start to panic that they might actually lose to a dog they start looking for dirt on Gnarly. They find what they think could be dirt but instead turns out to be an unsolved murder. As Gnarly's humans get busy defending his reputation they end up solving several cold case murders, and solving some that had been originally classified at suicides. One of those murders, the death of Gnarly's handler while he served in the Army, leads to the discovery of a traitor at the highest levels of the CIA. Of course people high up in the CIA don't go down without a fight. Will Gnarly be able to protect his human family? Will he end up as mayor of Spencer?
I revived this book for free in exchange for my honest review.
The perfect book to read to give us an insight into the coming election
Ms. Lauren Carr nailed this book again. As an avid reader of her stories, Candidate For Murder is a very exciting book to lay on the couch and read it. It is a perfect book to read to give us an insight into the coming election.
There are many characters in the books that I adore. Aside from Gnarly, the bravest German shepherd dog I adore, Dallas is my all-time favorite of the story. This girl is not only beautiful, who is also has a gold spoon while growing up but very feisty. She cracks me up as well. A funny, beautiful, and witty girl who is not afraid to dig some dirt about the candidate.
This book is very exciting, suspense, and above all an eye-opener for us readers to select the right candidates that will serve the people in honesty and integrity. I cannot put this book down. Though sometimes, it feels right on my face during the late at night when am reading it because I cannot put it down.
