Rate this book
Embracing the darkness is part of divine balance. Everyone has a shadow, a dark side. Exploring the shadow self is not only safe, it's necessary for balance and healing. The author of Goth Craft invites you down a unique magical path for navigating inner and outer darkness and harnessing the shadow for spiritual growth. Shadow Magick Compendium sheds a positive light on this misunderstood and rarely discussed side of magical practice. There are ritual meditations for exploring past experiences, dispelling harmful behavior patterns, and healing a fractured soul. Learn how to safely fast and perform other methods of self-sacrifice, invoke a deity into yourself (godform assumption), get in touch with your Spirit Animal, take advantage of the Dark Moon and eclipses, and perform a unique ritual with your television for a new perspective on society. From astral journeys to sigils to dark herbs, you'll find an array of magical techniques to navigate the shadows and mysteries of yourself and the world at large.

This one started off strong and I was eager to read it as a a few of my favorite witchy authors have recommended it.

Sadly, I just didn’t love it. The focus in the beginning was on shadow work- as titled, and expected, and extremely beneficial. I loved the prompts and followed along. Then the topics shifted and seemed scattered, not really relating as much to shadow work as you’d expect a “compendium” would, and much shorter sections. Fasting, sigils, scrying- all useful topics for a different book.

Had the author stuck to the main topic, I think I would’ve rated this book much higher and enjoyed it more. Sadly, he lost me after the first couple of chapters.

A pleasant surprise... Most of my practice leaning toward the shamanic, I have worked with shadow quite frequently. But I have not seen a book present shadow in a way this positive. Up until this book purchase, I did not realize how much I dislike I actually had for my shadow qualities, and likewise the darker aspects of magick. RD educates us in both a nonjudgmental and realistic manner on four types of shadow: the inner, the astral, nature, and society, giving exercises and journeys along the way. This is not a book of spells and potions, but a book of aids (like sigils, herbs, and meditations) to help the shamanic witch or wizard better understand the unseen parts of psyche. His knowledge on the idea of shadow, in terms of balance, is applaudable, as is his view on balance in general, which bears a striking similarity to that of eastern faiths. Truly a gem if an addition to any magickal collection!

Having read Raven's "Esoteric Empathy" which i view as being a classic text on a much neglected topic i decided to delve into his other works. The first one i came across was this one and i must be honest and say it didn't do much for me. I have an interest in Shadow Magick and have read much on the topic. I didn't particularly find anything 'new' within these pages. Whereas with his work on Empathy which had me totally hooked and unable to put the book down, it took me a few weeks to get through this as i found it to be a bit of a chore. Of worth was the Soul Retrieval exercise which i found was very effective.

Met the author years ago and read his first two books as part of that acquaintance. Interesting.
