With contributions from content teachers, this insightful book discusses instructional approaches, student activities, and textbooks that can motivate reluctant learners to become active readers.
Reread for the third time. I consider John Guthrie's research vital to my understanding of reading engagement and the reading needs and challenges of teens.
Not a book for the casual reader. But teachers who want to turn their classroom culture into a highly engaged collection of motivated students, this is the book for you. I believe firmly in the scholarship of Guthrie and his partners as well as Deci and Ryan's Self Determination Theory. So firmly, that I see them as a path to the kind of educational reform dreamt of by students, teachers, and parents.
Thought-provoking in parts. This "scientific" study underlines a lot of what I already know/assumed. It highlights relevance and the ability/need of strong teachers to make all texts relevant to the reader. Seems obvious, but spans across subjects and is all too often neglected.
