Girl Games

Rate this book
The cheerleader and the geek girl. We were totally wrong for each other, so why does this feel so right?

Lisa was the good girl. Prom queen. Captain of the cheer squad. Geeky games weren't her thing, but she was home from college and bored. And when she heard Kylie was going to be there she knew she had to at least check things out.

Kylie was a proud geek who didn't care what the world thought. Kylie figured it was game night as normal until Lisa stepped into the game room reigniting old feelings she never thought she'd nave to deal with again after going to college.

Two girls who've spent years hiding who they truly were. Two girls afraid to admit how much they need each other. Two girls who are tired of denying who they really are. Especially to each other.

What was supposed to be a simple game quickly becomes a game of love that will change both of their lives! But will they be able to let go and finally let it happen?

This book reminded me of a certain term called "stockholm syndrom". We get to hear about our two leads Kylie and Lisa dating guys throughout school to prove they aren't gay and to take their minds off things. Fun. We also get to experience / learn that Lisa, who by description was the "good girl" and the eventual love interest, had relentlessly taken part in bullying Kylie for years. Throw in the main lead who eventually starts to like her bully the instant she starts treating her like a human, and you've got yourself some good ole stockhold syndrom vibe-y romance.

Disturbing, screwed up, wrong, what-am-i-reading, is how I felt during this book.

1.5*

This book was not what I expected after reading other books with the same idea.
Although the story was suppose to follow two girls discovering they attracted to each other, large parts of the book were about this table game (something like D&D), and the dealing with one of the characters, Dave, which is describe more than once as asshole.
I felt that the relationship part took very small part in the book.
Another point that made me enjoy the book less, was the fact that although the heroines are consenting adults, they only kissed and hug during the book, yet it is hinted that they did much more outside what was described.

The story is told in first person from two points of view Lisa's and Kylie's but there was no or almost no difference in the writing and more than once I needed to go back and check how is the talker because something didn't fit, and then I found that the teller changed. The fact that in the beginning of each chapter it says who is the teller did not make a difference, because the similarity in style.

I felt I was reading a teenage romance, not a story with collage students, and the fact that two characters that were suppose to be different in personality told the story in the same style just different point of view did not add.

Excellent!

This is a well written book about two girls, one a high school cheerleader, the other a Goth. When Lisa, the former cheerleader home from college, accompanies a mutual acquaintance to gaming night, Kylie, the former Goth, is shocked. Both feel a spark when their fingers touch during the game, but both deny their attraction. The characters are well developed and the storyline flows smoothly. To find out how their story develops, put this book on your must read list.

Archer does a great job of making being a nerd cool. She is a master of creating a sweet love story between girls you would think would be total social opposites. This book, like others I have read by Archer, is YA/teen friendly so it can be suggested to those young girls just coming out. In fact both main characters deal with questions about their sexuality throughout most of the book.

This is what Mia Archer does best - teen (yes, I know they are college students but they still feel like teens) romance.
As with most Mia Archer books I took off a star as it was too short, a novella really. If the length was double some deeper characterization could be achieved. Great ending.

I wanted to give it 3.5

Light read, nothing too heavy. Pleasant story.
Might have been more effective without the time jumps.

Otherwise a sweet YA? Romance.

I received an ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
I really like that Archer has gone geeky again. In this book, our hero, Kylie, fell in love with playing C&C (which I liken to D&D, because that's really what it is) in high school. She also seems to have some interesting feelings for Lisa, cheerleader and prom queen. Not that she'd do anything about those feelings - high school is hard enough. Now Lisa is home for the summer and looking for something to keep her occupied. Dave, that creepy guy from high school that seems to take everything too far, invites Lisa to a 'party' and when Lisa finds out Kylie will be there, she says yes. This leads to a lot of role-playing, some rebellion, and a little bit of falling in love. The question is whether the two will allow what they feel to flourish or kill it with a critical fail roll (that's a roll of 1 on a 20-sided die for those not in the know). And how will they deal with Dave thinking that Lisa, and the game, are his? This is a wonderful book for anyone who was geeky enough to play D&D, and cool enough to admit they loved it. Can't wait for the next one.

The Dave thing was sort of expected, because there had to be a reason for him to be still in the group, but overall a good read!

In all seriousness though, if someone like Dave keeps showing up to your group, you have to get him out.

If you are a role player (board version), you may find yourself described in this book.
The first two chapters are somewhat unnecessary. The others recompense it.

Girl Games was just what I needed! I've dabbled in table top games some, mostly to hang out with friends that were into them, but am into other geeky think things so it's fun to be able to read about relatable characters. I really enjoyed the build between Kylie and Lisa's relationship and how they didn't immediately get past their differences just to get to the romance. It would have been very unrealistic. They were given time to grow as characters, as people, and as a couple. But that didn't mean that the romance wasn't fun to read either. I quite enjoyed the tension between them, at times screaming to myself "when will they just kiss already?"

This book was a lot of fun and I can't wait to read more by Archer soon!
