My relative, as it proved, was not sufficiently restored to leave the place by the afternoon train; so that as the autumn dusk began to fall I found myself at liberty to call at the establishment named to me by my friends. I must confess that I had spent much of the interval in wondering what the disagreeable thing was that the less attractive of these had been telling the other.

نصيحة مجرب لا تسلف أحداً مالك الذى أعطاه الله لك دائماً وجه مالك فى اتجاه الربح أو الإنفاق العاقل أو التوفير فى غير بخل ولا شح
ولا تقترض من أحد مالاً حتى وإن كان بنكاً لأن فى الرد خسارة فى الحالتين فالمُقرض إما أحرجك بطلبك ماله، أو بإخباره الناس أنك تقترض منه مالاً والبنك يجعلك تدفع أضعاف المبلغ المُقترض

" رأيتها أربع مرات ، ليس إلا...
ولكني أتذكرها كأوضح ما تكون ..."
تلك المقابلات الأربعة لم تكن سوى لحظات قصيرة جمعتهما سوياً...وعدا المرة الثالثة فإنه يفصل تلك المقابلات سنوات إلا إنه في كل مرة كان هو من يتعرف عليها ...لم يُخطأها ولا مرة ...
يتكشف لك من المقابلة الأولى أنها تملك حلماً كبيراً ، يكاد يسلبها عقلها ، يراوغها الأمل بتحقيقه من حينٍ لآخر...ولكنها لم تفقده...
وإذ بالمقابلة الثانية تجمعهما سوياً وقد تحققت الخطوة الأولى على درب حلمها ...وبالمقابلة الثالثة أحدهم يختلس حلمها...
وأخيراً...بالمقابلة الرابعة قد فقدت الحلم ولا سبيل لتحقيقه أبداً...
عندما يستولي الوهن والاستسلام قلب امرأة...تنطفيء جذوة الأمل بداخلها...وتغمض عينيها عمن يتمنى أن يقدم لها يد المساعدة لتحقيق حلمها ...هذا يعني الموت وهي على قيد الحياة ..عندئذٍ ستدرك لماذا وردت تلك الكلمات في المقدمة :
" فقد وقعت من نفسي وأعجبتني طلاوتها وحسنها ، وعددتها نموذجاُ بارع الظرف لطراز بعينه ، وقد أحزنني نعيها ولكني أعود فأفكر في الأمر ، فلا يسعني إلا أن اتساءل لماذا يؤسفني ذلك ؟ "
ولكن دعني أخبرك بأنك تعلم على وجه اليقين لماذا يؤسفك ذلك......

Em “Four Meetings”, Henry James apresenta-nos mais dois americanos fascinados pela Europa, sendo este conto talvez a mais breve estadia de um conterrâneo seu do outro lado do Atlântico: precisamente 13 horas.
O narrador, um homem viajado, simpatiza com Caroline Spencer assim que a conhece, no primeiro dos quatro encontros que tem com ela. Caroline tem há muito o desejo de conhecer a Europa, uma viagem a que destina tudo o que poupa como professora, mas ao chegar ao Havre, a sua ingenuidade e um profundo sentimento de dever entram em conflito com o seu sonho.
“You see it hasn’t been only the money – it has been everything. Everything as acted against it. I’ve waited and waited. It has been my castle in the air. I’m almost afraid to talk about it. Two or three times it has come a little nearer, and then I’ve talked about it and it has melted away.”

هنري چيمس بيحاول يكسر الصورة النمطية للبطولة. مفيش مصباح علاء الدين هيحقق الأمنيات، مفيش مُعجزة أو أقزام سبعة أو أمير بحصان هيساعدوا في النجاة، وحتي الصديق الوحيد لم يشدُد من أذرها. المرة دي البطلة لوحدها تمامًا.
أبطال الرواية كلهم بلا إستثناء - بقصد أو بغير قصد- إنهزاميين ومُتخاذلين في حقهم وحق غيرهم! ودا تأكيد من الكاتب على أننا لا نملك شئ في هذا العالم غير أنفسنا، وإن أكيد فيه معارك هتُتوج بهزايم حتمية، ولا إحنا ولا غيرنا هنملك في مواجهتها من أمرنا رشدًا.
يا ساتر يا رب الإنسان بيبقى قاعد في حاله ويلاقي الواقعية ضربته في مَقتل من حيث لا يدري :(

Long time, no see goodreads! What can I say? Life can get hectic when you're young and chronically ill. But here I'm with a new review, albeit a short one.
Last Sunday I picked up Four Meetings. I must admit I had high expectations because I do have a thing for Henry James. There is something so effortless about his writing style, his prose always seems to flow and yet it always feels substantial and meaningful. Now, that's quite a combination if you ask me. Another thing I enjoy and sometimes marvel at when it comes to his writing is the ambiguity. Perhaps this story isn't a best example of that, for this time it is the central heroine that lives in ambiguity and not the reader. Or is it so?
The story is told by a male narrator that sounds suspiciously like Henry James himself. In other words, he is an American living in Europe. He meets a young woman, an American teacher that dreams of visiting Europe. She will be the heroine of this story. The four meetings (referred to in the title) will reveal her sad destiny. Every time our narrator meets her we learn more of her. This is basically a story in four scenic episodes (That would make for a brilliant mini series!). The ending of the story is not entirely clear, but we can guess it is not a happy one. Not a spoiler, is it? I mean it's Henry James, you know that it won't end up with - they lived happily ever after.
Henry James wrote some amazing women characters. Tragic heroines seem to be his specialty. The story is perhaps a bit predictable, but honestly I found it so easy to relate to it. It's a very touching story indeed. I could really sympathize with the heroine of this story. Bless her poor puritan heart. However, I don't feel sorry for her. I feel there is bravery in her innocence, something that I can't help but respect. Perhaps her illusions have a value of their own? Perhaps her fate is not so tragic? Perhaps it is better to believe in something that isn't true than to be vulgar? Who is really the victim? I had a lot of questions upon finishing this story, and I happen to think that's a sign of good writing.
I can definitely recommend this one to fans of Henry James. It's very much his signature style. If you liked Daisy Miller, you'll probably like this one as well. On the other hand, I can see how it might seem naive to a cynic. I suppose it's not a story for everyone, but it definitely has its place among the classics. Highly recommended!

لا يوجد أمير ينقذ الفقيرة البائسة، لا مصباح يجعل علاء الدين أمير على قلعة خيالية، بل اختيارات تقود صاحبها لنتائج هذه الاختيارات.. لا تعد شخصيات هنري جيمس مألوف لي ولكنني أعتقد إنه يقدم واقعية المرأة في كل مجتمع، يجب عليها أن تكون الضعيفة التي تضحي بكل ما ترغب لأجل من حولها، حتى لو كان ابن عم لم تراه منذ سنوات.
حينما يتحدثون للمرأة يتبنون مبدأ التضحية والتنازل لأن هذا ما يجب أن يكونه وإلا لن ترتقي لكونك امرأة جيدة، وأنا أكره هذا المبدأ عن التضحية، لا يجب أن تحادث أي شخص عن التضحية أو تطلبها منه، ضحي أنت بنفسك ولا تسألها شخصًا آخر.
النساء مثل بطلة القصة تحب العيش داخل وهم القصص الخيالية عن كونتيسة وأمير وفارس لأنها في الحياة الواقعية لا تحظى إلا بدور الخادمة!
وكذلك الناس يسرعون لأخذ مالك ويتباطؤون في رده.
الواقعية جيدًا لكن القصة جامدة بلا روح، فارغة من الأدب وبالتأكيد غير ممتعة في قرأتها، جزء من هذا يرجع للترجمة السيئة ولكن جزء كذلك على النص نفسه.

أربع لقاءات بامرأة تحلم بالسفر لأوروبا القديمة العزيزة، نرى في كل لقاء قرار من قراراتها نحو حلمها.
"“Don't tell me,” I said, “that this wretched man is going to give you bad news!”
“I suspect it is a little bad, but I don't believe it is very bad. At any rate, I must listen to it.”
I looked at her again an instant. “You did n't come to Europe to listen,” I said. “You came to see!”"
ان الآنسة كارولين ليست حمقاء أو مخدوعة بل هي امرأة مدركه تماماً ما تفعله، و حقيقةً مرة أخرى يضعني هنري جيمس حائرة هل موضع الشخصيات النسائية لا يمكن أن يكون لشخصيات ذكور؟ لأنه في الواقع ليس صعباً أن يوجد رجل مكان كارولين لكن لا نرى مكانها رجال كثر بينما هناك كارولين في حياة كل منا!، ان التودد والتضحية الإشفاق على حساب الذات أمر تربت عليه النساء بل أصبح جزء من صفات المرأة القدوة ويمكن ان ترى تطرف هذه الفكرة فيما يسقطونه على الأمومة، هنري جيمس هنا لا يطبطب على تلك النسوة، الشموع التي تحترق لتضيء للآخرين..انه في كارولين يتحدث للعالم عن أحلام ترميها النسوة لأنهن مُضحيات، وهو أيضاً يتحدث للنساء عن حقيقة ان الإنسان - ذكر أو أنثى - مسؤول عن حياته وأهدافه فلا يعتقدن أحد بوجود إنسان خارق يحقق عنك حلمك..هذه الحياة لك انهض وعشها.

أسلوب كتابة المؤلف سهل ممتنع، فهو يقدم في الظاهر معاني في الباطن، فحين يرسم الشخصية لا يتحدث عن صفاتها بل يترك ما ترتديه الشخصية وحديثها يعطي القارئ فهماً لصفات وطبيعة الشخصية، فنحن ندرك سريعاً ان كارولين فتاة مهذبه خجولة والراوي عنيد شجاع، وفي مشهد استسلام الفتاة وتلاشي الحلم، جعلها مع سؤال الراوي عن بريق الأمل تحدق في بقعة ضوء على السجاد فقامت واغلقت الستائر لتطمسها.
"“When are you going to Europe again?”
This question seemed brutal; but there was something that irritated me in the softness of her resignation, and I wished to extort from her some expression of impatience.
She fixed her eyes for a moment upon a small sunspot on the carpet; then she got up and lowered the window-blind a little, to obliterate it. Presently, in the same mild voice, answering my question, she said, “Never!”"

Esta nouvelle nos presenta al inicio las esperanzas de Caroline (una maestra norteamericana) de conocer Europa, para lo cual se ha preparado leyendo lo mejor de la literatura europea; algo de historia y guías de viaje. Sin embargo, a través de los cuatro encuentros, el lector puede contemplar los planes y los sueños frustrados de la protagonista que desembocan irónicamente en el encierro y al borde de la servidumbre de una pseudo condesa, viuda y pariente política de ella. Su propia familia,su primo, es quien la esquilma de sus pocos ahorros y trunca su viaje. Y es su viuda quien como un parásito la consume y se aprovecha de su bondad. El único encuentro real es con su destino aciago que el narrador presagia desde el comienzo.
"Usted sufre de la enfermedad americana por excelencia, y la sufre «a lo grande»: el apetito, mórbido y monstruoso, de colores y de formas, de lo pintoresco y lo romántico a cualquier precio. No sé si llegamos al mundo con esa enfermedad, con la semilla implantada, como si precediera toda experiencia; quizá más bien la cogemos pronto, antes casi de desarrollar nuestra consciencia; es como si sintiéramos, cuando miramos a nuestro alrededor —para salvar nuestras almas o, al menos, nuestros
sentidos—, que vamos a tener que valernos de ella. Somos como unos viajeros en el desierto, privados de agua y sujetos a un terrible espejismo, al tormento de la ilusión, de la sed acuciante. Ellos oyen el chapoteo del agua, ven jardines verdes y huertos que están a cientos de kilómetros. This is a sad and disturbing tale of a young woman being cheated, all because she is unworldly kind, charitable, and an biding love for the beauty of European. Her kindness and aesthetics warped her ability to see the world as it-is, instead of what she imagines.

I have not only read Byron; I have read histories and guide-books. I know I shall like it!' 'I understand your case,' I rejoined. 'you have the native American passion — the passion for the picturesque. With us, I think it is primordial — antecedent to experience. Experience comes and only shows us something we have dreamt of.'
• 'I'm not afraid of running short,' she said gaily, still looking at the opposite houses. 'I could sit here all day, saying to myself that here I am at last. It's so dark, and old, and different.'
• She was extremely observant; there was something touching in it. أحيانا يثير أعصابي ذلك النمط الموجود في العلاقات الإنسانية سواء كانت أسرة،صداقة،حب،وغيره القائم على وجود أشخاص يهبون ما في أيديهم ل الآخرين بصورة مطلقة..يحبون دائما حمل الهموم على عاتقهم،التضحية بلا مقابل ، التصورات المثالية عن الآخرين،الغفران الدائم ، العطاء بسخاء ، في نفس الوقت الذي يكون فيه معظم المستفيدون من ذلك هم أوغاد ناقصون وأحط أهل الأرض في نظر الجميع حتى أحيانا في نظر الشخص المضحي،وفي كل مرة أظن أنني قد بلغت نهاية أمثلة تلك العلاقات المريضة أراها تبزغ بعناد تام في الحياة الحقيقة والخيالية أيضا كما هو الحال مع الآنسة كارولين مرهفة الحس التي حلمت يوما أن تجول أوروبا وكرست أموال عملها لذلك ثم بسذاجة تامة تهب في أول يوم لرحلتها أموالها كلها لابن عمها الملعون المديون ، بل وتتحمل استضافة زوجة ابن العم ذاك وتقوم على خدمتها وتحمل إهاناتها لها في قلب منزلها ، آنسة كارولين نبلك ورهافة حسك لا يغفران دناءتك ووضاعتك في تقبلك الإهانة بهذا الشكل وفي موافقتك بأن تتعرضي للخداع بتلك السهولة الواضحة
كنت أصرخ على كارولين في رأسي طيلة الصفحات ، كنت أصرخ على الرواي صديقها من أجل أن يصفعها على خدها لتفيق إن كانت كلماته لا تحقق هدفا ، لكن يبدو أننا لم نكن في رواية خيالية وإنما في حياة حقيقية،حيث كل منا منفض إلى شأن وكل منا ليس بإمكانه أكثر من التصديق على المأساة حتى أصحابها أنفسهم!
كنت أصرخ على كارولين في رأسي طيلة الصفحات ، كنت أصرخ على الرواي صديقها من أجل أن يصفعها على خدها لتفيق إن كانت كلماته لا تحقق هدفا ، لكن يبدو أننا لم نكن في رواية خيالية وإنما في حياة حقيقية،حيث كل منا منفض إلى شأن وكل منا ليس بإمكانه أكثر من التصديق على المأساة حتى أصحابها أنفسهم!

My first time reading James. I was not aware that "un-happily ever after" endings (or in my own words, "unsatisfying") was something he was known for. I felt sorry for poor Caroline, but at some point, you have to stop being a kind pushover and take what you want. What a sad life she lives.

Henry James (1843-1916), nacido en Nueva York y fallecido en Londres como súbdito británico, es un maestro de maestros y representante de un tipo de literatura que une ambas orillas del Atlántico. Habiéndose criado y educado en un ambiente cosmopolita y acomodado, refleja parcialmente sus vivencias y las de la sociedad de su tiempo en sus novelas.
Dominando el relato corto tanto como el largo, utiliza los primeros para experimentar y esbozar técnicas que empleará en sus novelas.
"Cuatro encuentros" es un delicioso relato de juventud, escrito hacia 1877, en que, al igual que en "La Taberna" de Zola, asistimos a un progresivo descenso a los infiernos de alguno de sus protagonistas, pese a una luminosa descripción inicial. La misma capacidad para inquietar y perturbar nuestro pensamiento que aparecerá en "Otra vuelta de tuerca", se encuentra presente aquí, pero sin elemento sobrenatural. No por intuir el final, aunque sólo a grandes rasgos, pierde interés el relato.
