2.5/5 Another fun, rhyming story for developing readers aged 6+ from the usbourne 'very first reading' series. Like the other books in this collection it contains some complex sound patterns that are not easily decodable for younger/beginner readers so adult support will be needed when first reading the story.

This was a great transitional book. While there is not much plot, the story moves along and involves things students could relate to. This book shows different animals that are found at the school that the students try and pet.

Purpose in the classroom:
Read aloud: There is a lot of dialogue in the book. Every few pages has a speech bubble from one of the characters. Students could take turns reading each speech bubble to get the student really involved in the reading. This would best be used in reading to help the students understand dialogue and learn the new vocabulary. This book would be best for late kindergarten, early first grade, depending on how well the student could read. It would be great for students who like animals.

Literary elements: This book did a great job with rhyming. Anytime words were not in speech bubbles, the lines would rhyme. This would help students practice flow and fluency. The lines that do not rhyme have a good flow, so students would be able to easily read along fluently. Students could also classify the rhyme if ever taught how to do so.
