That’s how long Kitty Laughton has been at the mercy of the scientist who experimented on her town, killing over a dozen people and giving the rest of them unique powers. But Kitty doesn’t feel powerful, especially when she learns the crazy man plans to test his research on more unsuspecting people. She refuses to let anyone else die, but trapped with no one to help her she’s out of options…that is until sexy and exasperating Nick Degrassi arrives.
Special-ops soldier Nick blames himself for Kitty’s capture, and he’ll do whatever he can to free the quiet beauty, but close quarters and a shared secret bring an attraction that neither of them expected. With the organization that started it all making mercenaries for hire, Nick and Kitty must save themselves and stop a madman…before it’s too late.
Award-winning author and RITA® finalist Marnee Blake used to teach high school students but these days she only has to wrangle her own children. Originally from a small town in western Pennsylvania, she now battles traffic in southern New Jersey where she lives with her hero husband and their happily-ever-after: two very energetic boys. When she isn't writing, she can be found refereeing disputes between her children, cooking up something sweet, or hiding from encroaching dust bunnies with a book.
Avenged is the second book in the Altered series by Marnee Blake. In the first book, Altered, an entire small town comes down with a sort of flu like virus overnight with only a few people surviving the sickness. Those that survived find that they had gained super human powers and were then being chased by those responsible for experimenting on their small town.
Avenged picks up three months after the end of Altered. Kitty Laughton has been held prisoner during the time that has passed by the mad scientist responsible for the virus. Kitty has been injected, poked, prodded and tested on a daily basis. Finally help is on it's way in the form of special ops soldier Nick Degrassi.
The Altered series is a fast paced suspenseful fantasy type of read with a bit of romance thrown into the mix. The first book focused on the relationship between Blue and Seth after the virus had hit all the while having a ton of action while all of the characters went on the run.
With Avenged the only thing that changed from the first book is the couple that is the main focus. The action and fast paced were still there and this turned out to be just as enjoyable of a read as the first. The characters are still dealing with the powers that they have achieved while trying to keep anyone else from having to become experiments.
Nick was a sexy take charge military man while Kitty is the innocent small town girl. The pair worked well together in the midst of all the chaos of dealing with the aftermath of the escape and what had happened with the powers. Another great read in this series that mixes romance into all the action.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book could not come quickly enough. I had to know what happened with Kitty, Nick, and the rest of the gang of Altereds. The story jumped right in where the other left off switching to Kitty as the heroine and Nick the hero during a daring operation to rescue Kitty and stop an evil scientist. Action, romance, intrigue, and a bunch of people altered to have powerful gifts. Just the thing!
This is the sequel to Altered and carries on the story though the lead characters change. Not good Standalone or out of order.
In the first book, Kitty was a gentle, thoughtful girl who lived a very sheltered and restricted life away from others due to her parents' odd religious views and fears. The change in her that now allowed her to read minds nearly drove her crazy and then to be captured by the scientist responsible and 'tested' for three months in his lab has nearly broken her. She has learned to block the thoughts of others out of self-preservation, but then she discovers an emerging element of her gift- she can send thoughts as well as receive them making her more dangerous and interesting. It has been three months and she has given up all hope of rescue from her friends until Nick, Seth's army pal is suddenly there.
Nick feels such guilt for all that happened to Seth and his fellow Altereds when the traitor who was Nick's roommate sold them out. He is especially remorseful about Kitty. She was taken and has probably suffered a great deal under Field's mad attempts to tweak his drug and experiment on more people. Luke and the Jack booked it for Mexico and Seth and Blue were forced into hiding after their encounter at the Army base so that leaves Nick to find and rescue Kitty. He has to go back and work with the military to do it.
Finding her was the easy part because Fields has not been idle while Nick and the intelligence guys worked. He's up against a new group of altereds and time is running out as Fields seeks to sell his work to the highest bidder. And during this time, he and Kitty grow close and now he is afraid to lose her for an entirely different reason.
This one was as strong and exciting as the last book. The situation remained taunt with danger for most of the book, but there was time for the characters to grow and start a relationship. Kitty is a different sort of heroine in that her self-worth is incredibly low. She is snarly and antagonistic at first because she sees herself wrongly and definitely gets Nick wrong as a result. He sees a strong, quietly courageous girl that he wishes he could protect from all the bad that has happened to her even while his need to protect leaves him feeling guilty and helpless. She thinks he pities her and sees her as a liability because her gift is not strength, speed or tactics. There issues provide the internal conflict and is what makes their relationship build cautiously.
Kitty was not a heroine I couldn't connect with completely. She has her good moments like at the beginning when she is toughing it out just to stay alive and then that time in the middle when she was connecting with Nick. However, early encounters with Nick and then late in the story, we had a disconnect. I got that she had issues because of her past, but she comes across as first petulant and whiny and then later she did such a one eighty that it left me with whiplash- she totally turned into the person she accused Nick of being. I don't mind characters growing, but it was a huge leap from her mousy whiny 'woe is me because I can't see how powerful I really am' to 'I am an Amazon warrior woman hear me roar' flip. Now, I didn't hate her, but I couldn't connect with either extreme of her.
Nick was a fantastic hero. He had a need to protect and nurture so that he took the blame for anything going wrong, but in general, he was a stalwart, upstanding guy who did the right thing. He had a lot of patience with Kitty and worked hard to convince her that she was special and wonderful to him. He respected her and treasured her even though he thought she didn't like him.
Alongside the love story is the ongoing excitement of bringing down Fields and others who would exploit the formula that altered people to give them the enhanced gifts. The fight and fleeing scenes were intense especially now that there were other altereds working for Fields. There was a secondary plot building in the background that will carry the series forward though I liked where the end of this book left things after that huge battle scene involving all the altered.
In summary, this was a strong, engaging sequel. Those who like the superhero or super human type stories will definitely want to give this slightly spicy NA Sci-Fi Romance a try.
I received this book from Net Galley in exchange for an honest review.
I couldn’t wait to read this sequel to the author’s fantastic debut novel, Altered. I had found that “an enthralling, all action, riveting and brilliantly written story - superb!” and really wanted to know what happened next - and I wasn’t disappointed. This is another page turner, a brilliant sequel and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
It starts some three months after the first novel ended. For all that time Kitty Laughton has been injected, tested, prodded, poked and imprisoned by the mad scientists who carried out the experiment which killed her parents and most other people living in her isolated home town. They’re intrigued by the special powers the experiment has caused her to develop - the power to read the thoughts of others. When she learns the crazy man intends to test his research on more unsuspecting folk she feels powerless to protect them - until the new cleaner starts. That cleaner is the special ops soldier, Nick Degrassi, and he’s infiltrated the secret base to try to free her whilst still endeavouring to keep his feelings for her hidden from her. They need to work together to overturn the evil plans of the wicked scientist and his minions but time is running out and there are others hiding their true intentions.
With more danger to be overcome, villains to thwart and double dealing ‘friends’ things are not going to be simple for this couple as they try to protect each other and mankind. The relationship between Nick and Kitty develops as they develop the confidence to reveal their feelings to each other, slowly, warily but also realistically in the circumstances. It is an exhilarating story, a roller coaster ride where you’re unsure what will happen around the next corner. This is a phenomenal addition to the series and I thoroughly recommend it - I hope there will be another book in the series soon!
Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too, for letting me read this in exchange for my honest review.
This is a very interesting story. If you like superhero type stories then this one is a must read. I didn't read book 1 but I loved this one.
It's Kitty and Nick's story. Kitty was changed when a drug was tested on her town. Also the time when she lost her parents. Now she is a prisoner, treated as lab rat, experimented on, and also feared. Her gift is rare. She can read minds.
Nick is normal. He is there to rescue her. But instead of escaping with her he gets them caught. Now they are both prisoners. But there seem to be a lot more going on than experimentation. Nick will have to take drastic measures to rescue her and himself. Outside help might not be available to them. They will have to count on themselves to get out of their prison.
It's a thriller, sci-fiction, romance, all three at once. It's very well-written with interesting story line and unique characters. I loved Kitty and Nick. Their story is definitely worth reading. But I wish I had the chance to read Book 1 first then I would've known the background. In any case it was a great read.
** I received this book through NetGalley and Entangled Publishing, LLC in exchange for an honest review **
For a good 57% of this book, it was going to go firmly on my 'so bad it's good' shelf. The plot is cheesy, the characters are on a one-way track to LoveVille despite the fact that they're inevitably doomed, and the main character reads her love interest's mind in all good fun. I typically excuse bad writing and bad plots if it's fun enough writing. I won't even hide this in a spoiler- it got really, really racist in the last 42%. Arab and black characters are introduced (the only ones in this book!) as Muslim Iraqi terrorists. "Both were dark-skinned, with dark eyes and thick lashes, strong jaws and strong builds. [...] They exuded coiled violence." Like, this is in direct correlation to the fact that they're black- the omitted text literally just compares them to the fat white guy in the room. They're called exotic in the next paragraph, their Arab boss uses the fake name 'Ahmed' and beats his wife (wives, potentially, as inferred by the text), and they're all described as "men who [...] are not afraid of death".
It's funny though because Kitty says "Ahmed's hatred [of Americans] was based on stereotypes", when literally half this book is racist garbage based off of the wife-beating, hatred-spewing, bombs-to-our-backs, die-for-the-cause, Osama bin Laden stereotype of Arab people from American media :). It's also doubly cute since, even after she reads his mind and could easily find out his real name, Kitty continues to use the name he chose to be represented by because of the racist American stereotype towards it! Any other Arab readers remember Achmed the Dead Terrorist? Way to be transparent in your bias and hatred of Arab and black Muslims, Blake- there's nothing quite like reading a book and finding stereotypical drivel about your people!
I should also throw in here that there's little to no actual erotica in this, and, while it's the genre it's filed under, you shouldn't really waltz into the book expecting anything to happen. It's technically a 'new adult' novel- don't let the shirtless cover fool you.
Avenged is the second book in the Altered series by Marnee Blake. Although you could possibly read it as a stand alone I think it would be much easier if you read the first book which was a really good book as well. Avenged picks up a few months after the end of the first book Altered. Kitty was kidnapped at the end of the first book and in the second book we find that she is being tested and experimented on by the scientist who was responsible for the virus that gave her the powers in the first place. The captivity has changed Kitty who was a naive but very sweet small town girl. She has learned to control her powers and even learned a new way to use them. Kitty has almost given up hope of being rescued when nick a special ops soldier who Kitty met in book 1 shows up to rescue her. Nick feels guilty since it was his roommate who kidnapped Kitty. He is also attracted to her but never quite seems to say the right thing to her. This book is almost exclusively about Nick and Kitty although there are a few scenes from the other members of the group from book 1.
This is an action oriented and fast paced read. Although the bad guys are a bit one dimensional I still thoroughly enjoyed the book. I thought the romance was well done and the characters were likable and believable. (I wasn't sure if I liked Kitty in the first book but she really developed and grew from the first book and I enjoyed her as the heroine in this book).
Nick was a great hero and although he had his take charge Alpha moments he also had his insecurities when it came to Kitty and recognized the fact that he didn't have "powers" so he wasn't capable of some of the things that they were. When necessary, he let Kitty and her powers take the lead.
I enjoyed the direction the series appears to be going in and I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
It was similar to the previous book in that regard, but this time, the story centered on another couple we saw in the first book.
This time we focus on Kitty (who can read people’s thoughts) and Nick (a military guy, helping them stay alive). We saw a little of them in the previous book, we only knew kitty was stubborn and Nick fell for her.
Now he has to rescue her and things turn from bad to worse. Man, these two had the shittiest of lucks, lol. They were always on the verge of something and then bam! back to square one. I really wanted them to win, ‘cause damn, they deserved it, lol.
Like I said, this one had a lot of action, new powers, characters and an ending that left me wanting more… now. It would be very interesting to see where the author takes this story, this new direction.
A fun, fun read with a little bit of frustration (man, they should’ve just destroy that briefcase on the spot).
*Thank you to Entangled Publishing for providing an ARC in exchange of my honest opinion*
I first discovered author Marnee Blake last year when I read her debut book, Altered, and was completely blow away. I have been stalking her ever since waiting for the follow-up to come out. No doubt in my mind I was going to be reading it, the only question was how long I was going to have to wait. And then Avenged was released. MINE! I sat down and read this baby in one day and while it wasn't as powerful of a read as its predecessor was, I still loved it.
Time for Kitty's story! She has the ability to hear thoughts. As powerful as that seems, it sounds like more to me a miserable ability to have. Anyhow, she was captured by the people who poisoned her town, killing most everybody, leaving a handful of survivors with special abilities. Three months they have been experimenting on her trying to replicate her abilities. Nick is a special-ops soldier and blamed himself for her capture so of course he wants in on her rescue. There's quite a bit of action and intense moments as Nick tries to rescue Kitty but the bulk of the story revolves around the rescues (Plural) as well as time spent in a cage dealing with powers while sorting through feelings. He's all 'yes I want her/no I shouldn't' and she is 'I want him/I had an uptight upbringing/nobody wants me'. Sometimes their separate pity parties were a bit tiresome but when they FINALLY give into to their feelings, things heat up. While I'm all for them getting together, I'm just not too sure if bumping uglies while imprisoned by a crazy scientist is the best place to do that.
There are not too many new characters to the series. Either most of them were major character previously, or we had been introduced to them. It's nice getting to revisit with former main characters, Blue and Seth, however brief. When it comes to antagonists, there are too many to count and I'm having a hard time figuring which one I detest more, Dr. Fields or Jeremy. Then there are the ones I'm not quite sure of. Martins and the military, Hmmm. Jury is out on if they can be trusted. Now there is a new player, Parker Sinclair. His powers are similar to Kitty's only he seems to have mastered them better than she has hers. I'm not quite sure how he came about those powers, but I doubt his future plans are on the up-and-up. I don't think we've seen the last of him.
I'm not sure of the novelty and excitement of the previous title has worn off but I found Avenged to be just a great book. It didn't quite have the knock-my-socks-off excitement that the previous book had, but it still made for an exciting read. I think what is lacking is the whole unknown. A lot is explained in this book so quite a bit of the mystery is gone on why they are the way they are. With that in mind, I cannot quite decide if I would call Avenged an okay stand-alone. There's quite a bit of backstory that, while it isn't necessary to know, it does crank up the excitement level of the series overall. So if you are new to the series, that's fine but I personally think you are better off starting the Altered series from the beginning. I definitely plan to continue with the series and put it in my recommend-reading bucket.
I received this book from the JeepDiva for the express purposes of an honest review. The opinions and rating of this review are solely mine. Stars - 4, Flames - 3
Disclaimer: I highly recommend you read Altered, book one, which is the story of Seth and Blue, first as you'll need the background information it supplies for a full understanding of the situation. While the author does give a nice overview of the history in this book so you aren't feeling lost, I still feel it's best to read them in order.
It's been three months since an evil mastermind, Fields, (man, that sounds just like the start of an awesome movie plot) unleashed his chemically engineered plan on the unsuspecting town of Glory. While some did survive, unfortunately the majority did not. As the survivors struggle with the changes they're now experiencing and grieving for their lost family and friends, they must also stay ahead of those responsible for the destruction.
However, Kitty, one of the survivors, wasn't that lucky as her group was betrayed and handed her right over to the bad guys in book one. *Yes, my mind indulged in some name calling when that happened.* After all the endless testing, drugs, and lack of being rescued, Kitty has not only lost track of time, but also her hope. She doesn't think anyone will save her, or if they're even trying.
Nick, Seth's friend and fellow Army teammate, though not impacted by the drug, is all in for whatever is needed and he's determined to find Kitty and free her from her captors. Though the waiting has been hard on him as he worried what Kitty was suffering, his forced patience has paid off as he's finally found her.
Since the moment they met, there's been conflicting emotions between these two and with her rescue, they only intensify. Yes, they'd both noticed the other's attractiveness, however, when Nick, being protective and concerned, made an observation to Kitty regarding his roommate, all Kitty saw was him being controlling and believing she couldn't make her own decisions...exactly what she lived with thanks to her father. She's determined to never let that happen again. For Nick, he feels guilty for not speaking up sooner about the potential regarding said roommate to choose the wrong path, which resulted in more guilt as he imagined what Kitty must be going through due to his roommate's actions.
What happens when Kitty is recaptured, this time with Nick? Can they escape again? Is the connection and chemistry that's now burning between Nick and Kitty worth exploring? Can a normal human and a changed woman accept the differences between their strengths? Can Nick, unchanged, keep Kitty safe against a group of changed men? Will Kitty realize her powers, though seemingly not threatening, can be just as big, if not more, of an advantage as anyone else's? Will Nick and Kitty realize they've found something special together and embrace their HEA?
One-click now to find out what happens as these characters continue to adjust to all the changes forced upon them, and how unchanged humans cope with the abilities the others have. I'm looking forward to the next book and am curious as to who it'll be about. I have a theory on who the couple is and can see it being an interesting journey to forever for them. Plus, to be honest, her first name is the best. *wink wink*
**I received a copy of this book from Entangled Publishing via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.**
My Review: I loved the first book in this series just for how creative the set-up for the entire world was. While this one picked up right where the first left off, it had a slightly different feel just because the group we got to know in the first novel is fractured. The main story though involves Nick trying to free Kitty from the jail/complex/medical facility where she's being held.
In the first book, Kitty was a meek, mild little thing...overwhelmed by her new power to read minds. In this book she's been jailed and basically tortured for 3 months. She's so over any of those things that held her back before. If she gets an opportunity she's going to take it, no matter who she has to run over in the process.
Her opportunity comes from Nick. He's had a crush on Kitty from the very start, but in the first book she was betrayed by his roommate, so she places him in the same cocky jerk mold as his roommate, although he's done nothing to earn that judgement. It takes a long time for Kitty to trust Nick and her own judgement throughout this story. She didn't see the betrayal coming in the last book and that's how she ended up imprisoned.
For Nick, he feels so guilty about the fact that Kitty got taken and it has taken so long for them to get her freed. He sees her as such a strong character which she doesn't see at all. And that brings up an interesting point in this story...Kitty can hear Nick's thoughts and still doesn't trust his motivation for a long, long time...and I understand that her track record is to blame for this.
While I did still enjoy this novel and the setup for the story line, I had one major issue with all the confrontational scenes. Various men were running away with various things and people. Everyone has some modicum of power that they can wield on the others to stop their momentum. Over and over again, they would confront the bad guy and then people would get frozen. OMG, don't confront the bad guy...just shoot him in the head, then he can't freeze you. It was such an obvious solution, but I know...then there would be no climactic confrontations. But I felt like I was watching a bad movie and yelling at the screen..."Shoot him, now, before he or someone else freezes you!"
But maybe that's just me. :D But even with that I did enjoy the book and can't wait for more in the series. Now they have to catch up with that other guy...there's always one who gets away.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
Guilt can blind a person but when love comes to play who knows anything can happen.
This is my first read by this author and I have to say I liked what I read. I do have to go back and read the first book to see how this all started who are the other characters that came in play in the middle of the book and come to the rescue. There was chemistry between the two main characters but it was a bit of mystery on how they met so another reason to see what happened in book number one. The storyline was good and I was able to connect with the characters.
Kitty was a strong brilliant young woman that trusted the wrong man. Someone told her that she should stay away from him but she did the opposite. Her parents had told her what to do all her life and now she was going to do what she wanted. She hoped and prayed that her friends would come to the rescue but as time passed she knew no one was going to come and bail her out.
Nick is on a mission and he is going to help Kitty escape since he blamed himself for not convincing her to not trust the person that took her. He needs a plan and once he is in and finds her things go according to plan. But when they escape and they get ready for the extraction something goes wrong and they are captured. They are going to need a new plan but what.
Kitty and Nick are going to be tested they are going to have to play it smart in order to get out of there. Kitty has already suffered so much and she doesn’t know that she is the key and her powers are valuable. The relationship between them develops slowly even though the chemistry is instant which I loved. I knew that they were great together but it was going to take time in order for them to be together. Kitty becomes stronger and she knows that she is the only one that can stop Dr. Fields and she defies Nick. But what intrigued me more was that when things got tough she was able to get into Nick’s head and help him until the very end.
Avenged was a good read. The characters were well developed. The writing was good and I wanted so much more and I can’t wait to see what the author has in store next.
Totally recommend this read!!!
Received ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an Honest Review
‘Avenged’ might not make a whole lot of sense if Blake’s first novella ‘Altered’ isn’t read first. Even if it feels as though I’ve been waiting for this book for a very long time, I found my memories about what really happened in ‘Altered’ fuzzy when the ARC of ‘Avenged’ finally dropped into my lap a year later. Thrust straight into the action from the first chapter, we’re told in bursts about what had happened in the previous months or weeks - not quite enough to put the whole picture together - but the full story isnt quite ever revealed, as though it has been assumed that anyone who begins ‘Avenged’ has already read its prequel. I found myself having to go back and get to know the motley crew once again, which hindered my enjoyment of the story simply because of the prerequisite knowledge I needed to have to fully enjoy this one.
But relished it I did, nonetheless.
The subject matter here itself isn’t given a too much of a spin on the super-soldier and illegitimate enhanced drug testing bit that I find myself completely floored by it. But 'Avenged’ made me a happy camper for pretty much the same reasons ‘Altered’ did: the sharp clarity of Blake’s prose, the romantic tension amidst the unrelenting action and the all-round decent main characters who aren't afraid to say what they wanted without the slew of emotional trickery simply because there is really something bigger to fight against in an ongoing arc of a story that grows curvier and longer by the minute.
Kitty and Nick made a believable pair despite what might look like instant love, I appreciated the author’s effort to develop a connection that went beyond the physical, bound as they were by their circumstances. In short, there isn’t a dull moment, even if things sometimes skim the sharp but slippery slopes of believability at times especially when it ends in some way that echoes the shenanigans of any X-men movie over this past decade and more. More than a ‘kids trying to control their new powers’ story, ‘Avenged’ makes me hopeful for what might come after already.
Kitty was a survivor. Dr. Fields had used a drug on Kitty’s whole town and it killed almost everyone but Kitty and a few others made it. Kitty had waited for her friends to come for her: Blue. Jack,or Luke they had grown up together. They had become orphans together and they had been changed by Fields together. But they didn’t come. Seth a soldier that had been in the town had also been changed but he also was gone. The change in Kitty was she could hear other people’s thoughts. At first Kitty listened to everything after awhile she just stopped as Kitty had learned nothing that would help her herself get free. Now Kitty just blocked the world, she didn’t care. While being held hostage Kitty was forced to stretch her mind reading ability. Kitty was treated like she was dangerous no one else was put in solitary confinement in a cell and if anyone speculated why Kitty was in solitary confinement and in a cell they disappeared. Other victims given the drug got telekinesis or amazing strength or speed as far as Kitty knew she was the only mind reader. At first assistants and orderlies visited Kitty’s cell alot, they were endless experiments some causing nosebleeds and headaches even a seizure. Then they stopped testing Kitty’s ability. Kitty wanted to escape and save others from her fate or worst her parents fate of death. Then Nick is sent to get Kitty out. Very good story although at times it seemed to drag a little for me. But i never gave up on the story it kept me wanting to find what would happen next. I was a little disappointed in the ending but it was totally explained. The plot was great and the story was well written. You felt like you were right in the story with the characters and I loved that. I also loved the characters and the twists and turns Kitty and Nick went through. I liked the twists and turns of the story itself. I recommend. I received an ARC of this story for an honest review.
This is the much anticipated second book in a series by Marnee Blake! It picks up where the first book left off, only this time following two different characters. The mystery isn't really a mystery anymore, but the story is still action-packed and keeps you on the edge of your seat.
Kitty Laughton has been kidnapped by a mad scientist, who is responsible for the death of most of the people in her hometown. He is also the one who has caused her to not only be able to read minds but also control them. She is losing hope that anyone will come rescue her, when a soldier she met before appears again, ready to save the day. Nick Degrassi blames himself for Kitty's capture, and he is determined to save her. While attempting to keep his feelings for Kitty in check, he must work with her to get them both back to safety. Some new enemies are introduced, and they must determine who their real allies are.
I enjoyed seeing the relationship between Kitty and Nick develop throughout the story. Given that Nick could easily have been a knight in shining armor, and Kitty could have had a little hero worship going on, I was impressed that the author kept their relationship at a simmer for most of the story. It wasn't too insta-love or insta-lust, but instead she kept things at a reasonable pace, considering the circumstances. The reader got to know both characters well before jumping on the Kitty/Nick bandwagon. Of course, it was hard not to jump onboard prematurely - I loved both characters from the start!
Great addition to the series! I eagerly await the next installment (if that is in the works).
**I received a free copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.**
I liked this even more than "Altered", and that is saying a lot! Kitty and Nick are both so GOOD and sweet... And I love how similar, yet different, they are.
The action is cool, but I really enjoyed the Telepath and Telekinetic truly getting to shine in this installment. The discovery Kitty makes and her ability to use it adds another layer that is downright fun.
The relationship between Kitty and Nick is a nice, slow build, and I loved how they get to know one another. The attraction is basically there from the start, but their emotional connection grows and then blossoms beautifully. The intimate scenes are sexy and very natural.
I loved how Kitty could see how Nick saw her in his mind. It was an amusing to consider that aspect of her powers, and how different her perspective and his were. Seeing her opinion of herself grow and change, in part because of how he saw her was a real highlight, as well. Very fitting of a New Adult story.
This has a very X-Men First Class vibe to it, complete with a former ally turning on them because they are "superior" and "evolution is the next step". I happen to be a big X-Men fan, so I thought it was awesome. :)
I received an ARC from the publisher through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. This is no way influenced my review. My opinion is my own.

I had no idea that I would love Avenged by Marnee Blake even more than I loved Altered.
The book stars a hero and a heroine that I completely fell for! Kitty is so strong, brave, and such a fighter. She journeys through a path of self-discovery in this book that I found compelling and heartbreaking. Nick was sexy, strong, and swoon. He's the kind of hero every reader is going to fall for.
A fast-paced, tightly-woven plot pulls you in from the very first chapter. Experiencing what it's like for Kitty having been held in captivity by the man who created the drug that changed her is riveting. I kept turning the pages, because I couldn't stand not knowing what happened next. I love when romance authors bring their hero and heroine together as soon as possible, and then LEAVE THEM TOGETHER. Marnee Blake did not disappoint; I had all the Nick and Kitty time I could handle, and their sizzling connection was HOT!
The whole time I read this book, I kept thinking that I couldn't wait for the movie. It reads like a feature action film, and I"m sure that one day it would be so great as one!
Entertaining follow up to Altered, but you definitely will want to read it before this one if you haven't already. Kitty, while unique gets a little down on herself quite a bit, and I liked her best towards the end when she toughened up and stood up for Nick and crew. I'm excited to see what is next for our ragtag group of originally enhanced or to coin the description Martins used once"super-powered punks" lol. This book spends some time working two different but intersecting story lines and prepping us for what I am assuming, and hoping, is Luke's book. This is a relatively quick read, the story flows well and in a manner that keeps you engaged and not losing interest. If you are looking for a sweet in spots romance, with some intrigue, super powers and a vast group of characters to grow on pick this up!

This was an incredibly exhilarating, scary, action-packed, danger - around - every - corner, romantic ride that will leave you shaking, biting your nails, and on the edge of your seat, wondering what will happen when you turn the page. And the fact that our couple, Kitty and Nick can find love while in the throes of this wild danger was phenomenal! Wonderfully written, with that wild and dangerous plot that is totally heart-pounding!
I really liked Nick. A sexy, bad-ass special-ops soldier took my breath away. And our Damsel, Kitty, was beautiful, frightened, but she had that survivor's spirit that is endearing and perfect for our sexy hero.
Avenged was AMAZING. The writing was spectacular. I give this book a SIMPLE YET THRILLING FOUR SHOOTING STARS!
I give this book 5 stars. It had a great story, plot, and amazing characters that you will fall in love with. I could see myself rereading this book. The author did a great job on it. The author kept the storyline progressing wonderfully and where you were able to follow it. The way the author wrote the book you could imagine the story and see it unfold. I definitely recommend this story to anyone who loves action, adventure and romance. This story had a lot of action to it. I looked forward to reading more from this auThor.
Thanks to the author, publishers and NetGalley, too, for letting me read this in exchange for my honest review.
This is Kitty and Nick's story. Kitty changed when a drug was tested on her town. She has a rare gift. She can read minds. Now she is held prisoner, submitted to experiments and treated poorly.
Nick doesn't have any special powers. He will try to rescue her. Things don't go as planned and now both of them are prisoners.
Full of suspense, this sci-fiction romance is very well-written and made me read it in one sitting!

This was the first book of Marnee Blake's that I have read, yet it is the second in the series. It is so well written, the entire premise of the story is unique and original, and Nick and Kitty kicked ass. I will definitely be reading the first novel of this series thanks too this one getting me well and truly hooked! 100% recommend!
A big thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the ARC for my honest review. This is the 2nd book in the series. I did not read the first but this reads as a stand alone. You know things happened in the past but it doesn't detract from the story. First time reading this author. This was a crazy wild ride you think they are escaping... nope. Manuscripts and turns. Liked it very different not super heavy on romance. May not be for everyone but I think most fans of paranormal mystery would enjoy this book. Let me know if you agree. Enjoy
I thought she was one of the weaker characters. She didn't really take advantage of her power until she was tortured. I was hoping for more with her because of her potential. I'm glad Nick was there for her and her character turned out better for it.
